[ROM]JL4 CWM Flashable Deodexed/Rooted 12.16.2010 - Vibrant Android Development

CWM Flashable version with root and Stock JL4 3E kernel. You'll need to do the "Modified 3e Recovery" fix located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423 to be able to use CWM after flashing.
This rom just has stock 3e recovery

Thanks a million, Krylon! Does the SysDumpDeodex.zip include the kernel and modem?

Do I use ODIN or CWM?

At the bottom of your screen in Titanium Backup there should be a button that says "Problems?" Click it.

Preferred Flash Sequence (via Odin)?
Can someone please tell me if there is a preferred (or necessary) flashing sequence to the three components?
E.g., kernel, then pda, then modem, etc.?
Also, is it necessary to do anything between flashing each of the components, or just reset Odin and go with the next component without rebooting, etc.?
Thanks!

Hmmm. I got to 86% of pda (system) download and Download Manager now says "file not found on server." Has the pda file been changed or removed from DropBox?
Edit: Oops, yes; it looks like file name changed in OP! (No problem...we'll just give it another go.)

when you say flash a modded kernal to flash anything else do you mean something like super I/O kernal? Do you think that will work with this?

I worded it wrong, just need Modified 3e that disables sig checking.

guess next question is, anyone got a modified 3e kernel that will work with this??

If you mean modified 3e recovery, it's the first link in the OP

Do I flash the kernel first, then the modified 3e recovery, then the rom?

flash the entire rom, then do the 3e recovery fix

What I wound up doing is I flashed the entire rom and lost cwm. So, I knew I was going to use the JK6 Kernel+voodoo in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
You can download an Odinable version of it in the OP of that thread. It comes with CWM and everything seems to work.

P.S.
You need to Wipe before Flashing via ClockworkMod Recovery..
Currently Testing the zImage Flash atm, so I'll likely have an update shortly that lets you flash the zImage as well.

So (just to be clear) Do I download this, rename it to update.zip, then "reinstall" in recovery?
Or do i have to install rom manager, and flash from its boot screen

Don't Rename, well you can... But never rename to update.zip as this is how Clockwork is Used.. You select from install from .zip & select the name...
You and do either
adb reboot recovery from cmd prompt once you Have the update.zip downloaded from Rom Manager
or
You can Flash from Rom Manager.
Hey,
Great work here.
but, one question. I was told by koush during our talks about getting the bricks un-bricked that the only way to flash the baseband/radio was through odin.
does this flash the radio/baseband?
Thanks. Just want to clarify.

+1. Ya just remove the update.zip and the next time you reboot into recovery it should be stock recovery.
i actually tried doing this step already and it didnt remove it from my phone

Were you able to remove the update.zip from your home directory on your phone? If that update.zip is gone then you should not be able to get into clockwork recovery.
In fact to actually get into clockwork recovery you not only have to have a clockwork recovery update.zip on your phone, but you actually boot into stock recovery then have to select reinstall packages to get into clockwork recovery.
I'm going to assume because you haven't shared what you're running, you're running Cognition 2.1.7 which contains clockwork built in and can't be "replaced" since it is the stock. Either that, or you installed Unhelpful's 1.7 kernel manually.
Either way, you can't remove it. You'd need to switch kernels.
i deleted the update.zip but it still booted clockwordmod recovery.
how do i manually removed the kernel? ands after removing what would you suggest be the best kernel/rom to run so that i can overclock my samsung captivate to 1.2

Um I don't think you want to "manually" remove the kernel. You can flash another kernel over your current one using odin or if you have another kernel that is packaged with a clockwork flashable rom you could use the clockwork recovery that you are trying to get rid of. By the way the kernel is your OS, your phone won't work to well without one.
Unhelpfuls kernel is probably your best option if you want to overclock.
i got the problem fixed, and i used unhelpfuls kernel the newest one v 1.7 and even tried the cognition v2.1.7 with unhelpfuls kernels and i was not able to overclock on setcpu.
do you think i should use an older version of unhelpfuls kernels so that i can overclock?
The info you need about how to overclock can be found in unhelpfuls thread

The first post in my kernel thread explains all features and how to use them.

Problems adding CWM after root

Hello.
Ive been trying to root for hours and tried different methods, but no goodies. This phone was originally with 2.2 froyo. I tried 1 click roots, but unable to install CWM. I used Odin (one click download one) to downgrade to 2.1 and still I can't get CWM to work after root.
I just want a stable root method so I cant just install any recovery that lets me backup+flash roms =]
Any help will be apreciated!
What method are you using to get CWM?

Well, I rooted with super 1 click and tried to apply the update.zip (CWM) and still got an error.
Thanks for replying.
EDIT** I also tried this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163, but the link provided is dead.
Download ROM Manager from the market and use that to install CWM. I've had good luck that way.

I don't have the phone with me right now, but I'm pretty sure if was something about the SDcard. That it couldn't find something. Do I have to add an update.zip to the sdcard before flashing CWM with rom manager?
You don't, ROM manager puts it on there for you. It's the same process as doing it yourself, just automated. Let us know what the error was when you get back to your phone and we'll go from there.
Does anyone read any more?
2.2 has recovery 3e. you cant just install cwm from rom manager....
if you would GOOGLE the actual error message, you would see what the problem is, and that there is a sticky that covers the issue....
And if you read the whole post, you would have read that he downgraded to 2.1.
ROM manager is poop for our phone.
Just Odin flash a kernel with cwm baked into it if you're gonna be flashing a ROM...

I agree that it causes more problems than it fixes for ROM installation, but it does work reliably for getting CWM working.

nope thats not it, you can do flash it becuase you have already booted into it eg. boot into cwm flash new rom then while you are still in CWM you reflash the file to keep it, other wise if you reboot out of it from installing a new rom you loose cwm

Try to use CWM recovery from CoCore Kernel and see if you can flash custom ROM's.
But make a backup in CWM of your stock ROM, because that one from TWRP don't work in CWM.

Hmm, now you have custom recovery.
Enter in recovery, and if choose backup to sdcard1., and wit until finish that operation and receive message "backup complete".
Then, if you already have downloaded ROM and GApps, make wipe cache and dalvik and do a wipe of data/factory reset (be sure you have already backed up your apps with some backup app like Titanium Backup or other), go to install zip, choose zip from external card and proceed to flash, first ROM after that GApps.
