why do they want it very badly? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just saw another thread and I was curious as to why people are drooling about gingerbread rom. What is this rom? What is so special about it compared to Cog or Perc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Right now we are using 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs. The ROMs u mentioned above are modifications of 2.2 ROM (custom ROMs made out of 2.2 android version).
Gingerbread is the next version of android (2.3). Very soon u will see all (atleast most) of the custom ROMs here getting ported to 2.3 android base.

Am I correct that there is no guarantee this new android will be faster? Or will it have a new interface?

Here's why: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Android-2.3-Gingerbread-new-features_id15199
Specifically for me, the improved task manager with better save state.

Interface, as in home screens and related, can always be changed with themes and home apps.
The base versions are incremented/updated when there are some changes done to the underlying mechanisms. It would be best to check online for the android 2.3 change log that would tell you all the additions/updates/modifications done to 2.3.
Check out this link for technical changelog:

Because people always want whats faster and newer.....or what they can't have haha.

Android 2.0?

I just read a blog from the Android and Me widget, that said 2.0 was spotted. Have any of the ROM devs seen or heard anything about 2.0?
http://androidandme.com/2009/10/news/android-about-to-get-a-lot-sweeter/
article is here along with a video from dan morrill of a giant eclair being unboxed at google
I'd imagine if anyone had their hands on anything from 2.0 you'd already know about it
Devs already have the dump for 2.0 from the Sholes...
!!!
w00t
Giant eclair goodies are coming to the 'droid!
Anyone know what Eclair's bringing to the table?
A friend that works for google here where I live.. says its called "Zoom" which is what we know of as Eclair or Android 2.0
He has been using it on his G1 as an everyday ROM.. so with that said we can feel safe that it should work on our G1 nicely.
He won't let me try it out so I can't check it out myself..
From what I understand 2.0 is going to have a different UI and multitouch among other features. Also its good to note that I don't believe the dump we have from the sholes has the full 2.0 just yet. It is coming just not yet.

yeah it seems that the upcoming HTC Dragon is going to be known as the Zoom 2 or something and will be running Android 2.0. as of right now there's not much else known. so if eclair's 2.0, flan would be 3.0 or 2.5 right?

evidence is a good thing to have when your statement contradicts what everyone else is saying.
Eclair is no more Android 2.0 than Donut was Android 2.0.
However, neither is it 1.7.
Android versions are not given version numbers until //AFTER// release, folks!

Where can we get the official Android 2.2 Froyo AOSP for Nexus One?

I got AOSP2.2_FRF83_N1-signed.zip from http://bit.ly/buvgHn . However, the shipping version is FRF85 (or something newer). I want to install a fully stock Froyo AOSP to test the stock Google experience of Froyo, before switching to CM6 when it's out.
Does anyone know where we can get the final Froyo AOSP? MD5 also, please
This perhaps: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

You're asking for two different things.
AOSP code has zero google apps.
The google experience is AOSP + Google Apps. Search twitter, someone has a link to AOSP build for nexus.

[Q] Benefits of a possible 3.0 ICS/CM9 Kernel

So Guys,
on many places has been mentioned that there is/will be some devs who take a look on a possible future 3.0 Kernel for our tabs with ICS/CM9. As I am an "experienced noob" (my special word for "power-user ;-)) and not a dev, please could somebody enlighten me what benefits such a 3.0 Kernel would bring us? Performance? Features?
Thanks for your answers...
If allowed in forum rules (dunno for shure) you can discuss related stuff in here as well from my side.
Which kernel are you referring to??

So then why has it got a version number of 3.0? Which other kernel are you referring to if there has been a v1 & v1?
Or are you confused and referring to Android 4.0?

Not confused... go to your devices details and you will see what I mean in kernel version...
Yeah, like in Linux, kernel version was 2.4 on the old days, then 2.6
For last decade, then now 3.0.
In Linux the 3.0 includes some android codes I think.

I don't think this would directly affect us users (or as you say it "experienced noobs"). More likely affect kernel builders (efficiency and compatibilities). Please correct me if I was wrong.
first we need the leaked ICS rom from Samsung and then Samsung releases the kernel source code. No doubt this will be the version 3.0 of the kernel.
Kernel 3.0 brings many benefits to users because many optimizations are included

that was a subjective question and this is an inappropriate response
it depends on what you want out of a ROM and what your stock ROM is like. if a stock ROM doesn't suit your needs, sometimes there is an appropriate ROM for you. i have rooted every samsung device i have ever had and improved my experience greatly.
when you find a good developer, custom ROMs can be better. stock is usually most stable

I wonder what you want out from a rom?we are using/talking about OOS and that's suit my needs(It has all that is missing in stock android).
Sorry but Samsung software is garbage.

OOS seems to have everything i want in a ROM too.
that being said, i may find features that i want and don't have. my moto has pretty much everything i could want, but updating to a custom 7.1.1 increased the performance of my device so much that i can't imagine going back.
i haven't used any custom ROMs for OP3T yet, but from what i'm reading we have some really good devs and it is worth a shot. for instance, RR offers customization to such granularity that i will try it because that customization leaves me feeling like i actually own the device (basically the opposite of what apple does with their products)
