I wanted to see how an HD movie plays on the G. I tired to play an Apple Quicktime HD Movie trailer and no go. I also tried to play an HD Trailer from Yahoo movies and no go, it said "download failed".
Can the rooted G with TNT 2.4 play HD Quicktime movies? What's the best way for me to test this out?
From what I have read, the g-tablet has some very specific requirements for viewing 1080p files. I know for a fact that it will play MP4 H.264 so I just encode everything to that with Total Video Converter.
I haven't tried to play a .mov yet on it. I have a couple that I downloaded from the web that I should try.

Just tried a 1080p .mov that I downloaded from youtube. It plays in Rock Player with software decoding, but really bad.
I suggest downloading hd content to a computer and converting to mp4 h.264 because we know that is supported by the tegra hardware.

The best converter for the g-tab, in my experience, is Handbrake. I use the built-in Regular-Normal profile and change h.264 to mpeg4 (because tegra 2 has issues with h.264) and it plays completely smoothly at 720p and 1080p.
It plays .mov containers - the Tron Legacy trailers come to mind.
It has some trouble with mkv's and mulitple audio tracks, and HiDef h264 videos that are encoded in "high profile". That's been my experience.

There's no video player (that I know of anyway) at the moment that is designed to take advantage of the tegra2 hardware. Once there is it will fly. The G Tab doesn't seem to support a lot of codecs as well.
I've had success playing 720p x264 MKV's up to 4GB with Rockplayer and ES Video Player.

Has anyone sucessfully played a 1080p video?
I have tried mpeg4, mkv and h.264 and they play but the sync is off and they are very choppy.
According to Nvidia's website the Tegra 2 is supposed to have an on-chip h.264 decoder and encoder on it. But nothing seem to take advantage of it. Even the new Rockplayer with the Tegra 2 Optimization.
If anyone can let me know how you encoded 1080p to play on your tab I would be greatful.

For anyone else looking, I got 1080p to work on mine with Rockplayer 1.51 and hardware decoding. I donwloaded a youtube/vevo 1080p video and ran it through Handbrake. Normal profile, MP4 container and MPEG encoding. It plays FULL 1080p very smooth that way.

I was thinking about buying a Nook color but I had one question.
Will the Nook Color be able to play 720p mkv files? With subtitles? I noticed that the archos 70 can play 720p mkv files and It seems to me the cpu is similar in both units.
I am pretty uninformed about this topic so I was hoping if anyone could enlighten me? I did not want false expectations that one day someone will be able to get it to work on the Nook Color.
Btw I know that Nook Color can not play it natively, but since the archos 70 I was wondering if the Nook Color could 2 in the future?

At the moment, I don't believe the nook will play .mkv files without rooting it. I haven't rooted mine yet (waiting to see if 2.2 really does come out next month and what changes it brings, first) so can't say if there is an app that will play them.
I would think that it could, as long as the necessary app is installed and the codecs are available. The hardware seems like it would be perfectly capable of playing a 720p file, no matter the format, it would just be squished down to the correct resolution of 600 (or smaller depending on ratio).
Don't know about 720p, but as long as the video and audio streams are something the NC recognizes it should play an MKV (h.264, mp4 for video, aac or mp3 for audio). Although I had much better luck with just straight up mp4 files.
The built in player only even showed subtitles if they were hardcoded to the video.
i can play 720p mp4 files just fine with no lag what so ever.. Quality is awesome.. Rock Player doesn't like MKVs or AVIs, it will play them just really really slow..

Are you using the stock player or Rock Player?
rock player plays mkv's fine on my evo but i cant get it to activate on my nook
mvideo player plays mkv 720p anime with subtitles that i have on my samsung captivate. (although it seems you have to start the video from beginning to end (ie: can't skip around) or the audio will get out of sync)
wondering if you download android market and get mvideo player if mkv 720p subtitles will work on nook color as well.
if so i would be interested in the ereader/tablet
Why? The root takes approximitly 15 to 20 minutes. Is practically completly automated, and improves the device 500%.

I loaded up a 800mb standard def AVI and it played fine in rockplayer. Bit of stutter at the start but it smooths right out after about 10 seconds. Just FYI

You can download an app from market and then you can watch rmvb on Nook Color. So, your post is not 100% accurate.
There are a couple apps vplayer and rockplayer that can play just about every format on armv7l (our cpu)
More importantly I heard the ffree and awesome VLC player is coming to android VERY soon, that will be the best for the NC for sure
I have tried half a dozen video apps and have been unable to play 720p mkv.
720p youtube vids don't work
I tried downloading 720p and 1080p videos from youtube with tubemate and they wouldn't play. They'd skip and stutter - totally unwatchable.
Also just tried playing a 180meg 720p AVI of the office in VPlayer. The video plays fluidly but the audio is completely out of sync.

Nook color's GPU limitation. Max it can play back is 854×480.

I'm afraid 720p and 1080p are out of the question.
What's the point of 720p on a 480p device? Do you just not want to convert your video files?

Vplayer works better than rockplayer. Plays mkv. Ratings are bad because developer said application would always be free than started to charge for it. Paid version is highly rated

Because the nook's screen is 600 pixels so 720 would be the smallest "standard" size that doesn't have to be up-converted.
I play mkv files on my HTC Desire - Rockplayer and others all stuttered and displayed a blocky effect.
Then I installed Vital Player (neon) and they all player wonderfully - even 70p ones! For some reason it struggles with 720p mp4 files but who uses those?
The chip that handles video on the NC wants to play video smaller than 854x480.
Any video larger than that will not go through the hardware accelerator.
I have a thread where I attached a handbrake preset for the NC.

If you use that preset, you have to set the video size yourself (defaults to original size)
Use the original size if it is smaller than 854x480. If it is larger (like 720p would be) then set it to 854 width with "Keep Aspect Ratio" and the video file that handbrake puts out will be nook hardware accelerated.
Also, MoboPlayer is much better than the alternatives as far as the player itself goes.

I read entire thread but I really want to know why archos 70 or 101 (with same GPU!) manages to play 720p hardware accelerated.
I transferred several MP4 videos I shot with my G2 onto the rooted NC but they can't be played.
I'm guessing that because the NC doesn't have a camera, it's GPU may not have the hardware codec necessary to play the MP4 files.
Has anyone else had any success playing various video formats?
I had some success using rock player. I was able to load a 1024x576 mp4 video on the nc and play it in rock player. It wasn't silky smooth, but perfectly acceptable for watching. I used handbrake to rip it. I can post more details and maybe upload a sample if you'd like.

Looking at bn.com it looks as though playing mp4 videos should be working out of the box...

I wans't able to get the video to play with the B&N player as advertised, but that may have been because of my handbrake settings, which as promised are as follows:
Container: MP4 File
Picture: Anamorphic Loose, Width 1024 (to fit the nook)
Video Filters: All Off (shouldn't matter for playback, only for how good of quality the transfer is)
Video Codec: MPEG-4 (FFMpeg)
Framerate: 29.97
Average Bitrate: 997kbps
Audio: AAC (faac), Bitrate: 160
I have a 3MB sample here.
NC default player doesn't support video width above I think 854. You can find the exact specs in the FAQ on BN support.
Audio needs to be aac rather than mp3. To make a long story short, mp4 and m4v aren't video formats. They're containers for a video stream plus an audio stream, and there are a wide variety of video and audio stream types that can go in this container. NC default player doesn't support all of them, but the ones it does handle I've found it handles better than RockPlayer.

OK, I've read every thread I can find on XDA on the subject, and it appears that the LG phones have a GPU-optimized video player, but otherwise there is nothing out there that really takes advantage of the Tegra 2 for playback of MKV files. Is that correct?
Most of my files are 720 or 1080 MKV with embedded subtitles. So far the best response I have gotten has been from QQplayer. I tried Moboplayer with the ARM7 codec it sends you to, but could never convince it to show the subtitles.
So what are YOU using to play such files (if anything)? Please also share your settings in case the problem is user error at my end

I use PLEX to stream my 720p and 1080p mkv files.
If I need to stored the files on the xoom, i normally convert them to mp4 format using HandBrake.
i havent found a good mkv player for the xoom yet.. i am a VLC kinda guy on my PC and i havent found anything that compares to it...
I use xilisoft ultimate to convert to mp4 for native playback on the xoom
If you haven't bought Plex you have no idea what its like to play MKVs on your device
Plex provides better quality and performance than any other app.
I use Plex but the quality is not the same as if I play the same video (4GB 720p MKV) on the PC.
But one thing is sure, gets the job DONE.

I have found that 3.1 actually does contain enough matroska container parsing (Probably due to WebM) to play any MKV files that would normally play when re-muxed to MP4 however the mimetype and file extension don't appear to be plumbed in. So as long as the audio is AAC or MP3, the video is h.264 and the bitrate/profile/resolution is ok to play then simply renaming the file to add on .mp4 (so the native video player doesn't object to the filename) then launching the video file from a file manager and just choosing "Video player" plays just fine.
Plex is a streamer, we need a local player that's better then Mobo or Rockplayer.
Plex is awesome, but it still won't the display .srt subtitles. I've tried RockPlayer, but it won't play everything.

I tried this in 3.01 and it didn't work but I'll give it a go on 3.1. If this works...!!
I started with rockplayer but then I moved to Vplayer.
Vplayer is awesome all the mkv files with subtitles that rockplayer couldn't handle, vplayer played it like a champ.
Plus i use remote potato to stream my stuff from my home PC and vplayer has been the only player to handle the task.
I still do Moboplayer it works for everything I need. When the MKV files I have don't show the subs I back out and long hold on the file and select Soft Decode which always kicks the subs in for me. Try that and see if it works for you.
Is my Xoom the only one that stutters when it's playing 720P movie on either MoboPlayer or RockPlayer?
I have not found any player that can play mkv file perfectly!
Yesterday, i tested with 1 mkv file, 720p, ac3 audio, size=1.5 Gb, both rockplayer and moboplayer could play that movie very smooth and showed subtitle correctly, but there was no sound!
When i switched to "software decode" mode, sound was fine, but video was very laggy!
Unfortunately none of the players allow mixed mode rendering, as hardware for the video is a go, but there is no hardware (or OS level) support for AC3 audio. Honestly, Android still has a ways to go as far as video codec and container support is concerned.
Just got a Xoom yesterday and have tried about 10 different players...
BS Player was the ONLY one that worked well.

+1 DicePlayer is awesome and it supports HW Acceleration
Nobody uses MX Video Player? Found it last year when I wanted to play some anime on my Evo 3D, worked like a charm, and has a separate plugin for device-specific support. Works flawlessly using software decoding, only played 480p videos so far though, supposedly works perfectly using hardware decoding on 720/1080 videos, somebody give it a shot and lemme know
I use Mx Video Player its got best interface and plays most videos and h/w support for 720p videos 1080 is pushing to the limits for Xoom.

SGS IV looks like complete s*it. So now the only thing that stops me from buying HTC One this year is format support. Heard that it can't hardware decode mkv, is it true? I dodn't mean out of the box but any player like MX or BS. They both have hardware+ decoders that may somehow help with mkv.
MKV is not a video format but a container so I guess it depends on what type of format it was encoded.
Regarding full video formats supported HTC said it is
3gp, 3gpp, 3gp2, mp4, avi(dix, vidx), h264, webm & WMV
I know mkv is a container, but h.264 video decoding is implemented in many previous htc flagship chipsets (e.g. in HTS One X), though mkv can't be hardware decoded on these devices even with 3rd party players (judjing by responses on One X). The same in apple devices. There are no apps that could simply on the fly demux mkv and hardware decode h.264 video stream. Are there anybody who already owes the device and could run the test with any 1080p rip or beter BD remux in mkv?

sorry I would like to revise my previous statement it doesn't support xvid, divx And yeah doesn't also support MKV. But Xperia Z does.
My stock video player won't play .mkv files correctly (no sound), nor will DicePlayer which I'm very surprised about.
MX Player works perfectly - in the Settings I have the video set to H/W and the audio set to S/W - and now my 720p .mkv files run buttery smooth and are pin sharp.

Well yes, that I figured out as well, that MKV, and AVI (divx-xvid) is not supported, but only those which are encoded with AC3
Because of this, some youtube videos are not played, or sorry..played but without any sound....furthermore, when I try to stream anything via DLNA (samsung allshare runs on the pc and or Router) then I cannot watch them...its kinda annoying....
do you have any solution for this? like installing codecs?

Sure, I found out as well, but my main problem is:
When I am trying to play video on my HTC ONE using DLNA (which is hosted, operated on my PC) the videos which are using or coded with AC3
audio, they...just won't play....
As far as I know mxplayer does not have DLNA support....but correct me if I am wrong... and also what would you do with the youtube videos ?#
After contacting HTC, they just told me sorry these formats are not supported.... I hope it will be only a matter of an update...cause its kinda annoying that you can put any files on a galaxy s4 or galaxy s3...and just play it with the default app...
A little update on this... I manage to make an mkv movie play on the stock player. However the audio codec is not supported. So I think MKV is supported. DivX and Xvid are the only codecs that's not working.

well playing mkv, or avi is not an issue, but it plays without sound (due to the missing AC3) codec, mxplayer must be installed and its good to gooo with hw+ and its perfect, I even found a solution for the DLNA thingy.
Now I just need to get use to the camera, which is perfect on the display, but less perfect on the pc
I just ordered one without appreciating this (duh). Most of my movies are in MKV and some are MP4. I have no 3D movies, but reports so far are very positive with 2D. Just ASSumed more than MP4 would work. MKV in particular.
Added: Can you use other video players too or just the VR software? Seeing some post in Ritchie's Room on Youtube they are using other players. Seems you would need the VR interface.

mkv files in 2d or 3d sbs work, but the audio has to be encoded in mp3 for stereo. ac audio and dobly plus don't seem to work, just stereo. i had to re-encode my 3d mkv files to get them to play nice. video looks great though.
the file types i've dumped on it so far:
AVI
MP4
WEBM (whatever the **** that is)
all successful and plays perfectly.
.mp4 .m4v .3gp .3g2 .ts .webm .mkv .wmv .asf .avi .flv. And for 3D video content, Oculus Cinema supports the side-by-side and top-to-bottom formats.
