[Q] Root and "unbrand" my Wildfire for stock HTC ROM? - Wildfire Android Development

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Android really, a few months back I bought a G1 to dabble with it, but through some conflicting information and me screwing it up basically - I bricked it.
Now, I've upgraded my contract to a Wildfire, with 3 UK. It's a branded device, with their logo on boot, and Planet 3 app etc..
I've had a fiddle with the basic stuff, finding my way around and that, but I'd like to gradually take it further.
For now, I don't need the latest and greatest, so I don't want to go down the way of custom ROMs etc.
What I do want, is to have it think it's a generic HTC Wildfire, no network brandings, so that when HTC rolls out a release (As they have 2.2 this week) I can get it then, but I don't need to flash myself with CyanogenMod or whatever.
I wondered if it is possible to do this by removing the CID somehow?
Basically, I'm a noob, and I don't know if it's possible or not, but I pretty much want to just stop my phone thinking it's 3 branded, and get a stock HTC ROM on there, so that I can update it OTA as and when HTC roll them out.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I have read about GoldCards, I know that they allow you to flash a ROM different from what your CID allows by bypassing it - but I'm not really sure if that's what I describe above or not. If I created a GoldCard, and flashed a stock HTC ROM via it, would I then be able to update it to 2.2, and further in the future OTA just as if I'd bought an unlocked device?

Quick update,
I've created a GoldCard successfully, and have rooted and installed CWMod recovery, and made nandroid backup.
Can I put any ROM on, such as this HTC stock "Buzz" one, or might it not work because of different radio/SPL or something?
Not sure if the one I use will have to be Wildfire specific, or radio specific or whatever?

RUU does take you back to an unrooted stock phone.
Also, if you do want to get sprint updates you would need to RUU it back. Chances are however that if you get a Sprint update, our current Root will be patched, therefor you won't be able to run a ROM until someone finds a new root method. Which will more than likely be more difficult to find than the first root exploit was...kind of a Murphy's law thing.
XDA will likely have an update just as good or better out by the time Sprint does release theirs. Definitely will have the same update out for root users within 24 hours. At least historically.
O good, thanks for the verification... just making search... then i will await the communties update

Rooting with Goldcard

Hello all,
I have been searching for a few answers on here but I seem to have come up short. Basically, I have a non sprint hero and would like to root it. I am not sure if I am ready to load a custom rom just yet. I mainly would like to have root to do some modification to the current version I have like getting rid of the junk I dont need (peep, footprints, ect). So far, I have successfully created a goldcard with no issue. But this is where I am getting lost. From what I gather, before i can root at this point it seems I must load some sort of basic or custom RUU to even be able to get root. Is this correct? I would like to avoid this if possible at least until I can do a nand backup. I have also attempted to root using the SDK and shell on both vista and ubuntu karmic with no luck. I guess what I am looking for is a way to root without getting rid of my current 1.5 if that is possible.
Thanks for your help in advance..
Try rooting one of these ways....

I did it the second way. No need to flash a ROM, but I would flash the recovery so you can backup your system in it's original state just incase you mess with something you shoudn't
AFAIK Theres is no way to root exactly what your running or return back to stock software after root on non sprint heros. You should be able to return to your carriers software if they release a 2.1 RUU update and your willing to lose root.
Next step for you is running the sprint RUU in this guide. Step 4
Worked flawlessly on my App Wireless phone. Good Luck if you decide to go for it.

[Q] OTA HTC Software Update & Rooting

Hello. Im new to the whole rooting thing and I had a question. I figured this would be the best place to ask.
Im running software version 2.31.651.7 and my phone is Rooted through SuperOneClick. Recently sprint released an OTA HTC Software update; 2.32.651.2.
What I would like to know is......
1- If I apply this update, will it unroot or brick my phone?
2- Do I even NEED to apply this update, what does it do?
Thanks
-Vash
I too have a rooted Sprint Hero 2.31.651.7 (another method), but when I tried to update, it didn't work. But that is probably because I installed the ROM Manager Boot Recovery installed.
Although in hindsight, it might be a good thing since it appears that people who did install the 2.32.651.2 update are already 'complaining' about their little Hero's. Reading posts over on the Sprint Hero Forums, people are saying the Hero is back to being laggy and stuff like that, including having to pull the battery to restore the Hero to operation on 2.32.651.2. Oh well, so much for that because I'm probably going to just leave my Hero the way it is since I'm only using it for nothing more than alerts, phone calls, and Tasker because I can tether my iPad to do everything else. At least the Hero is capable of doing that much.
Although, the conspiracy theorist in me might say that Sprint is trying to make us Hero owners get frustrated with our little devices since they pushed this unannounced patch that does not seem to fix much and appears to cause more problems right before the holiday shopping season which would make us decide to upgrade our Hero's to something else. Oh well, I have no 'Incredible' 'Desire' to do that. (Yes, that is a PUN and a 3G hint.)
if you upgrade the .7 official OTA, to the new update, you can root the new software version using the .7 root method.

Can't update to 2.3.3

I'm currently running 2.2.2 OS Build FRG83G. The phone has downloaded the system update but refuses to install it. I keep getting "zip verification failed". I've even tried a manual update with the same results. The phone is rooted and unlocked if that helps. How do I get this phone to update to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread ?
You have to be stock to apply official updates. Sense you are rooted, why not just flash one of the stock rooted builds in the dev section?
Hmm ok, I will go do that then and see if that works.
<snip><snip><snip>
I am having a similar problem. I have a brand new N1 with 2.2 build 2.16.405.1 CL223106, do you know if I can jump right to 2.3.4 without first going to 2.2.3? Whats with my build number? Why doesn't it show FR....? I tried the #*#checkin*#* and am getting nothing OTA. Thanks.
You may have carrier specific build. Are you with Vodafone, or Videotron, etc?
Shouldn't be with Vodafone or Videotron. Its a PB99100 and should be for Tmobile. I bought this new from a 'questionable' site on the internet and now I'm freaking out. I do get 3G with my tmobile sim card.
Just because it works on T-Mo, doesn't mean it doesn't have a ROM from another carrier. It's possible you got some back stock from a carrier that tweaks their ROM...
I don't recognize the build number, so I couldn't say for certain, but it doesn't sound like a Google build...
You can switch to a stock ROM very easily by following the unroot/restore guide in the wiki. It will wipe your phone, so you may wasn't to backup what you can first (MyBackup is about the best non-root option).
Since you bought a version from a questionable source, does it happen to have a lock symbol at the bottom of the 'X' when you boot up? If so, it will make it sooo much easier to get your phone to a modern version. You could still stick with Google's Stock Android, or you could go with a better (in my opinion) 3rd party ROM like CyanogenMod.

[Q] Downgrade SPL from 5.12

Hello All,
I've read a lot of forums as to installing custom roms and I'm still lost. I haven't tried anything yet cause I'm too chicken to experiment and possibly kill my phone. Long story short, I still would like to install a custom rom to mainly get free wifi tethering.
I noticed in most of the forums that the only way to even begin the process is to downgrade to SPL 4.xxx. I don't have a restore point in Zuncee cause my pc crashed a month ago. Is the only way for me to downgrade from 5.xxx to 4.xxx, is by the goldcard method or is there a work around? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,
I was in the same situation you are now! Last week on Tuesday I brought a HD7 from ebay and thought it would be as easy to install custom rom as my HD2.....after reading the forums here it was anything else! But still by Wednesday I had custom ROM on my phone (im using deepshining). The only method I tried and what worked was the Goldcard method. I made my own Y cable and followed the instructions on the Goldcard thread. I found this video on youtube quite useful as well!
Any questions just ask me ill try to help as much as I can. I did find it tough to work out at first but when you have a custom ROM installed its like a new phone!

There's nothing you can do, except gold card, it's safe and easy, no need to be afraid
Hi dcscorpio76,
I am currently also in the same boat as you.
I have SPL 5.12... and also want to downgrade.
I have no backup to revert to as i recently wiped my PC and never kept my old WP backups.
After lots of reading (and im still not 100% on the process so will likely read some more) I intend to downgrade my SPL and then flash an 'unlocked' version of UK trophy rom. From what i have read i think im going to have to use the 'gold card' method so i will be buying a few bits (cables, usb gender changer etc.) When i have all the things (i believe) i need i will write back here on what i do and where it gets me.
I have a £10 nokia that i still love and i wouldn't be all that bothered if i had to use it. Why not wait until i have flashed mine (over the next couple of days i think) so that you dont risk bricking your device that you may still rely on?
I dont totally dislike my WP, its just that i want to breathe a new lease of life into it. I would like to customise the UI and play with some homebrew apps.
One thing i dont really intent to explore is running apps that should be paid for in the marketplace as im a believer in paying a good price for good apps. So i wont be answering any questions on that.
If you have already gone ahead and tinkered i'd be interested in any info you may have.
Thanks

Im far too tired to explain issues etc now so will do a write up tomorrow

Alright guys,
So I am pretty much on the same scenario you guys are, I am coming from several rooted Android devices and expected this to be much easier
Here's my HTC info:
Name: HTC HD7
Model: HTC HD7
Carrier: T-Mobile
Software: Windows ® Phone 7.5
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Radio SW: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Radio HW: A.12.0.D4
Bootloader: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
I was reading this Thread but apparently I need to use a Y USB cable, in order to flash a Goldcard ROM since I first need to DOWNGRADE my Bootloader version. I am a bit more than lost when it comes to figuring out where to start. Just BTW: It is a stock build, the phone got the OTA update.
Ultimately I need to have a Custom ROM that supports Multiple Languages, as well as no carrier branding
Any suggestions, in plain english?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I am waiting for my HD7 replacement so might be in the same situation. Would it not be possible to enter bootloader and them flash pre nodo original rom?
Goldcard by viperbjk is the easiest and the safest method so far to downgrade our bootloaders....i was on 5.11 and I did the goldcard method and it went on smooth like butter!! I'm currently on bootloader 3.1(HSPL) and flashed the deepshinig v7.6 and I'm loving my phone right now
Just follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152
Good luck! And happy flashing!!
