I just can't get Market to work - "Server Unavailable. Please try again later"
This is driving me crazy! Any solutions to this so far? I have tried Nootering (funny word!) the thing three times with different versions, but I get nowhere. Any help would really be appreciated!

Seconded on this. Had the same issue on my first try (and I've rooted about every device Ive ever owned) and xboxexperts tut's definitely helped.
I had that problem and had to register the unit with BN, search and you can find out how to reregister it with BN. I read somewhere where you can register with BN if you had this problem. try this link

xboxexpert, I have run your script (couldn't find any other tutorials amongst your posts, where are they?) and it installed a lot of fun stuff. But unfortunately I still have the same error on Android Market (Server unavailable. Please try again later.). But the Live Wallpapers work now, so thank you for that! I could never get those to work on the regular Nootering.
secfincorp, does that matter for the Android Market? I reran the wizard and it's already registered (I did that before the Auto Nootering, as you're supposed to do according to the instructions on Nootering). You sure you're not thinking about the Barnes & Noble bookstore instead of the Market? That doesn't work here anyway, only in the US.
Mikey1022, your colleague moved it after you closed it. But I would still say this is relevant for the Android development because it is a part of the Nootering process that doesn't work for everybody (I have seen others asking about the same thing in the Nootering thread, but the overwhelming lack of answers have made the others give up, it seems).

At least for the Nooks part. It's something with my ISP that blocks the market. Gonna have to call them and find out what it is. I tried going outside the house firewall and got nowhere. Then I took it with me up in my family's small zoo shop, and it just worked at once! So there is something at the ISP level that's blocking me.
I'm sure it will be a walk in the park to find out that from the ISP's army of well trained technical experts...not! Gonna have to deal with underpaid idiots reading from a flow chart again. "Have you remembered to plug in your DSL modem? Have you tried to reset your modem? Do you have any cables connected to the modem that were not supplied by us?"

Could be firewall ports on your router are blocked maybe...are you sure the dsl modem doesn't have a built in router or something?
Nope, it's not. I have a three tier system:
1. First the Thompson 585 DSL modem which is set to bridge mode, so...
2: ...the Linux M0n0wall firewall controls the DSL connection. And I do of course have full control over the firewall in the M0n0wall, and even turning that completely off doesn't help. The M0n0wall connects...
3. ...to a Windows 2003 Server that is the main house server, and the firewall on RAS is disabled. Then a WLAN router (Netgear with DD-WRT Linux firmware) is connected to the server, and it gives wifi access to everything mobile and portable in the house. That's connected as a pure access point, with the WAN port configured as a LAN port and the firewall turned off.
That means that disabling the firewall protection on the M0n0wall turns off all kinds of firewall protection in the house, and I have tried that. I even tried connecting another wifi router as an access point directly to the M0n0wall, bypassing the Windows Server, and that did not change anything either. So I'm very sure this is a problem at my ISP.
OK. So you know what you're doing. Just making sure. Some folks don't know anything about routers except how to plug them in.
I'm on a pair of DD-WRT routers myself (one bridged). I got tired of screwing with firewall port forwarding for PC games, Tivo, Xbox live, ipods, etc... now I leave the hardware firewall off, and just use the firewalls on the Windows boxes.
Yeah, I sort of know what I'm doing... Been working with computers for almost 25 years, so all the way up from DOS 3. And that makes it even more frustrating when I'm stuck on a simple thing like getting Android Market to work!
I actually have two DD-WRT routers in the house too, one Netgear that I use for the in house use and one Buffalo that's connected before the Windows Server to share my Internet connection with a neighbour. And then I have a Buffalo up in the shop, which in addition to giving wifi access also is set up as an always on VPN tunnell from the shop to the house. You can say that my system is a bit overkill for somebody who doesn't run a semibig company, but it's fun! And it's so stable with the hardware and software I've got running on it that you'd have to shoot it with a shotgun to get it to crash!

Hi Guys,
Just bought that wifi robot Skypee. Excellent piece of kit. But was just wondering if anyone has heard of or can develop software so I can control it through my Diamond (or any windows mobilke based phone).
Just posting it in Diamond section as I own one but I am sure that Spykee users will have other mobile devices whether it be windows platform or not.
Any coments suggestions welcome.
Had a quick search on google but could not find anything (yet).

i bought mine few weeks back from costco in birmingham. it cost me £115 inc vat! but i heard they were going for £99 on amazon inc delivery! dont know if they still available though.
only thing that is a ***** about spykee is building it. it comes with about 1000 pieces. it took me about 6 hours in total to build it!!!
but its worth it! its really a great "spy" robot and the voip funtionaility is overrated as skype is not supported (yet anyway). but good thing about it is that firmware can be upgraded and additional programs for robot can be written in future!
just waiting for a windows mobile based gui application to control it! then it will be awesome
I just got a Spykee for Xmas, My girlfriend paid 175 quid and that was the cheapest price a few months back as they were all 199.
Im gutted to see it for 99 quid now but thats just the way things go!!
I would love to control it from my xperia.
There is an SDK for the Spykee and I might even try and develop some software myself depending on what language its for.
Shame about the price, I could have had 2 and used one to build an Ed209 from robocop or a Johnny 5 from short circuit.
It took me about 2 hours to build, if that! How the hell did it take you 6 hours?
I did have trouble with the stupid fiber optics though as they kept falling out but it was easier to just put them in last!!

lol, 2 hours not bad! it took me that long to build the backbone lol! well6 hours was an average time over 3 days. did not have time to spend whole day on it but i suppose if u got experience with meccano or are good with building things like this then it would be good. i just wish the robot could build itself out the box lol!
I cant wait for applications\firmware for this to come out! will be excellent! my nephews love connecting to it from the other side of the world and playing\chasing\talking to my son via spykee! Great!

There is a guy called Jimfx on www.spykee.org who has deleloped his own GUI in Delphi and it works really well.
You can even change the speed to make Spykee a lot slower.
Give it time and someone will release some source code for us to play with.

I have had nothing but trouble with remote connection setup and have had to change my router settings because Spykee would not see my router unless it was broadcasting the SSID!
I still cannot get my friends to connect! Have forwarded every port and updated firmware on the router.
It needs an update and a web interface and some better documentation.
I expected so much more, and the intruder detection is not as advertised either.
I will keep you posted mate on any, if any, code appears for Spykee Devs

yeah i had trouble setting up remote connection. but make sure you have changed the default admin password for spykee from password (default) to whatever you want. also, it is better to have a static ip address assigned to spykee so that it functions correctly.
its true about the false marketing about spykee but hey, i know this can be more of a robot than meccano have advertised it as because once custom apps for the robot can be made...well lets just say we will 'flash' spykee just as we 'flash' our mobile devices....to get more functionailty out of them than the manufacturers initially permitted!

I have already assigned a static ip to spykee and tried Mac filtering on/off, broadcast ssid on/off, WEP on/off etc etc and still no luck.
Its starting to piss me off, The robot is not responding to anything.
The battery lasts a few minutes before it says it needs to re dock! Even on a full charge it says it needs to re dock.
So annoying. It looses connection in Local mode or Ad-hoc and none of the features work that are supposed too either.
I have already emailed play for a refund but it was bought before their 28 day stupid returns policy. Even though I only opened it on Xmas Morning.
Looks like I will be taking them to court.

these steps ( and it works really good)-- I will use example data to make thing easy.
- Create a user other than admin on the console application
( MyUser / MyPassword)
- Register your Spykee on http://www.spykeeworld.com/spykee/US/index.html and select register. ( Give a name to your robot and a password -- carefull, this is case sensitive)
( MyRobot / MyRobotPassword)
- Still in the console, in My Spykee tab, put EXACTLY the name ( case sensitive) and the password you registered in spykeeworld. Note the ip adress you have here.
( MyRobot / MyRobotPassword). The ip shown: 192.168.1.1)
- Go to the remote connection tab and check 'Authorize remote access' then put a port number.
( 12345)
- On your router you need to do port forwarding to Spykee ip address and use as SOURCE and DESTINATION the port number you did put on the console application.
( source port: 12345 destination port: 12345 destination ip: 192.168.1.1 )
That's all.
Now to connect to your Spykee, click on the connection icon. Select Remote robot and put the exact name you used to register spykee ( case sensitive).

Drack thats great man! Its a better guide than I could even think of. I wish I had a straight forward step by step guide when I was trying to configure mine out!!!!

CrazyDiamond, have you ironed out the issues with ur spykee? personally i think there is something wrong with its wifi broadcasting capabilities but hey im no expert. let us know how you get\got on
Hi, sorry for late reply, I was without Spykee as I sent him back for refund.
My spykees power issues were not software bug related, he eventually would not even activate when clicking "click to activate" Thing was driving me crazy so I sent him back and got my 184 quid back.
Bought another one for 94 quid from Gizoo and just build him and finished setting him up.
Drack, Nice guide, I appreciate your help although there was nothing there that I didn't already do correctly in the first place.
I still cannot connect remotely, I think it is down to my Router but I really do not know for sure.
I am a bit of a Computer Wizard and have been for the past 15 years, Solved 100's of PC hardware related and software related problems but cannot get a stupid robot that has age 8 written on it!! lol gotta laugh really.
Im sure my router is forwarding the ports correctly as I even checked the ports were open, completely removed all my security, firewalls and made sure He has his own IP assigned and still no luck.
Think I will convert him into an Ed209 or Johnny5 and wait for a firmware update if a new router does not work.

WooHoo, He is alive, Johnny 5 is alive!!! Well spykee is but you know they look the same.
I didn't test the new robot from a remote computer as it didn't work with the first one I had on the same settings.
I tested it with a local computer using remote connection as it specified in the manual.
This did connect for about 2 seconds and then just disconnected. Same thing as with first robot.
Wasn't even gonna bother testing from a remote Computer but decided as my friend had the software and was online at the time I would ask.
To my supprise, He connected! Still cant connect remotely from a local pc but thats only to test it anyway.
So happy He works. If anyone else has the same problem as I have had then make sure you try it from a remote PC, even if it doesn't connect as instructed in the manual.
It is so much fun to have someone drive him round

Your problem is really strange...especially the fact that you can't connect remotely from your local pc while a friend of you can connect remotely from his computer...
this could be that you have a kind of network problem. Check if you dhcp server is
correctly configured (if you can force an ip address for a specific mac address then do it for your robot, so it ensure that you will get anytime the same ip address...)...because if you don't then your port forwarding will not work correctly...this is stupid they didn't allow a fix ip address for the robot

Hi Drack, I already have the router Mac filtered and also already assigned a specific IP to Spykee by adding his Mac into the routers config.
Its all working fine apart from connection to a remote robot from local pc. This is not a problem as when I am home I connect too him locally and when I am at work I connect remotely.
It cant be the PC I am using as I have tried 2, One connected with wifi running xp pro sp3 and the other is connected via patch cable directly too the router, thats running Vista Ultimate 64.
The software is buggy using Vista64 and does tell me the battery needs charging etc.
Thanks for your advise, If I was unable to fix the problems myself then your advise would have been a blessing and I would have solved it.
Hope this thread helps others with problems.
By the way, Spykee is the nuts and I have had so much fun. Cant wait to Mod him and get the SDK.

Your problem is really strange but as soon as you can connect remotely from outside, and locally, this is no more a real problem.
For the battery I have exactly the same problem under XP, it tells the battery is empty after 5mn of run. It seems to be a bug in the software...
For the SDK, I emailed the support and they told me that they apologize to be late, but that the SDK should be available very soon ( this month).
I hope now that they will be hardware addon for Spykee...maybe Mecanno/Erector will provide new add on devices in the future...or why would they have use an usb connector??

i have been playing with this application for the past 4 hours
and it will JUST NOT connect! im pretty sure ive reached that point
where you keep trying everything u can, but eventually you end up with
a web of mistakes and have no idea where to begin to finish...so, lets

- i am at school. i live across the street from campus, far enough to
where my g1 wont pick up the wifi signal, so configuring the app via
wifi isnt even an option...
so i go to the FAQs and there seems to be a way to operate the program
via the cell network without using a router...great because i dont
have one...but when i read the instructions, it starts telling me

Yeah the faq doesn't make sense, have you tried the developer directly or checking their google group? They are pretty quick to respond
On my home pc i just needed to know the ip addresss of my machine. Since this is a campus network, its possible that only particular ports are open. the port that gmote uses may be blocked.
The FAQ is a little confusing, but its not that difficult to work out
That is true, given that bittorrent and Ares are known for not running on campus...how do I figure out what ports ARE open?? I guess google will help

Thats what Im trying to do, but Im now assuming that the ports are blocked because I cant get thru no matter what. I ran netstat and tried to figure it out but it was Russian to me
From what I understand of the program, you have to be on the same network. I may be wrong, but if you are on a different subnet, then you're SOL.
Like I said, could be wrong, but that's what I heard.
I have done the NAND install method on my Vogue with Myn's Warm Donut RLS3 from 2010-02-20. Since I do not have a data plan, and have the XV6900, which comes without WiFi, I cannot just connect to a local network to get internet access, so how do I get access over the USB cable or via Bluetooth? This would basically be like "Reverse-tethering", that you can do in Windows via ActiveSync (when you are hooked up you can use the desktop PC's internet connection)
So, how do we do this now on Android?

We certainly could if it was supported in our kernel, but our only USB drivers are adb and mass storage. I believe dzo and mssmison are working on some other. cdc, ethernet, rndis, etc. aren't currently supported.

Hmm bummer. Most people with cell service are STILL not paying for data plans, and only about 50% of people with smartphones have data plans yet. Heck...I got a data plan and then got rid of it after 6 months...that alone was $180 worth that was totally wasted for what...the convenience of checking email on my lunch break....yeah that's worth it. At least ATT is only $10 a month now if you are on a shared plan with your family for unlimited data. To bad I an on VZW, lol...
So anyway, it seems like this would almost be a must. I would gladly pay a developer here $50 if he came up with a widget to do it. He'd make a lot more than that on the market too if he developed that.

'Real' android phones can do it, our kernel can't. Plus, you can't download from market or use youtube, etc, over bluetooth tethering (I've tried) or via usb from what I've read. Only the cellular data connection and wifi are considered 'valid' by Android. So the dev would have to fix that, too, to make it worthwhile.

I would be happy just to have WiFi, but the XV6900 (Verizon Touch) doesnt even have WiFi at all. I am considering getting the Nexus when it comes to Verizon in a few months.

I want the Bluetooth PAN on Android!
It does not make any sense that Google would know I'm connecting via Bluetooth PAN vs. WiFi to my PC since this occurs behind my Router??? The IP is set at the Router level, my phone should not be visible.

I guess Android itself would know, but that seems odd. But Odd rules sometimes.

Not yet... the reasons posted above are still true.
Are there any plans to add this feature to future ROMS? The only reason I haven't switched to android from windows mobile is because of this.

I don't think so. It's a kernel thing, not a rom thing, and it requires a lot of driver work. But even if it did work, android wouldn't recognize it as a valid connection.
rfcomm + pppd to tether both ways?
I am new to android, but I have networking experience with Linux. I am running Myn's latest Warm Donut on my Sprint Touch. And it seems that hciconfig/hcitool are working to associate the phone with another bluetooth interface. Also, rfcomm seems to be working. And lastly, pppd is installed and (indeed) necessary for the 3g/edge connection as evidenced by the ppp0 in ifconfig. Also, reviewing dmesg, I see L2CAP and BNEP are compiled into the kernel. And pand is also compiled and running. I am not familiar with these, but it seems to offer another route for maybe getting a bluetooth IP link established.
So, my question is simply this. Can we not use the hci commands to associate the phone to another bluetooth adapter on, say, a networked Linux system? Then use rfcomm to build a bluetooth serial connection between the two systems, and finally establish a ppp interface on each end of that serial link? Once that is done, the two systems will share a point-to-point IP link over BT over which they can communicate. Then it is simply a matter of establishing gateways, proxies, iptables NAT, DNS, and routes to make either forwarded or reversed tethered connections. I am reasonably confident I can do that. With a Class 1 bluetooth interface on the Linux server side, the range could be extended for reverse tethering...perhaps making it useful as a moderate range wifi replacement. Other webpages discuss similar approaches using bluetooth rfcomm/pppd. It might require experimentation to find reasonable baud rates for the serial link, etc., but nothing seems obviously impossible. And bluetooth can provide a 1 Mbps+ speeds...again, not great, but better than Edge or dodgy EVDO.
Likewise, we may be able to build a proper PAN connection. I am not familiar with pand and bnep interfaces, but I could probably figure it out.
As I said, I am new to Android, and I am just starting to test this on my phone. Is there something that I am missing with regard to existing hci/rfcomm/pand functionality? Dmesg reports all of these compiled in and hcitool scan seems to do something...it blinks the blue light and find my laptop. I guess I am just asking if someone can shoot holes in my idea before I waste too much time pursuing it.

That's all correct, and I've done it before. But the issue is that Android only acknowledges TWO kinds of data connections: cellular and wifi. When I setup a pan and iptable'd my way to the internet, I was able to get google maps, but not market. I haven't tried Opera but the android browser didn't work. Etc., etc. So I think the usefulness of pan is limited. The real challenge here is for someone to dig through the source and find out how to ADD bt and USB as 'valid' data interfaces. I've never looked into that.
Cellular connection is ppp0. Have you tried running pppd over rfcomm? Or assign an identical IP address to the pan/pppd interface and set it's metric a notch lower so it is preferred over the ppp0 one? Also, will Android route over a VPN? Setup pan and VPN over it. VPN seems to "own" Internet traffic when it is configured according to this: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4205
Also, I've seen posts indicating that the default browser can be configured to use a proxy.
Just ideas and I'd like to know what you've tried so I don't waste my time. Thanks for your input.

Nope, didn't try any fancy-pants stuff. When I did all this, I was a total n00b to linux (only a partial n00b now) and it didn't take too long, so I say - give it a try! That's the spirit around here.

Great. That is encouraging. The link that I edited into my previous post seems to indicate that ALL traffic gets routed over the VPN when it is established. That would fix any security concerns I'd have about using a high-powered BT adapter. I think I will give it a spin.
USB Ethernet
In my kernel hacking trying to get Debian to run, I managed to enable USB Ethernet (the function driver; USB gadget crashes the phone) working, and I've been using it to SSH into my phone. I've used it to apt-get update without any problems. I believe it's just a kernel config option (although I might have done some code modifications), so the problem isn't the driver, it's with Android's userspace.

So you enabled USB ether in the kernel config and it's working for you? Against a linux host or Windows? that would be nice, I haven't tried that in ages.
Edit: yes, the 'valid' connection check is definitely in Android userspace. But I either forgot or didn't know that our usb ether func driver worked when enabled.
Ok guys. I am not sure what is going on here.
I can't connect to my schools wifi and it is becoming a royal PITA.
I can connect to wifi perfectly fine at home.
At school, they don't require any sort of "password" to access the network. (no wep or anything I mean) They do have one of those annoying/retarded portal login systems which seems to be coded to only care for laptops.... Actually I should say coded for a hand full of browsers ON the laptop.
I once or twice a week or so ago was able to actually access the login page either by entering it manually and being able to actually use wifi for a few minutes.. or by getting redirected.
I took the problem up with the help desk, they said we now have alimit of 4 wireless devices and my allowance was maxed.
Unlikely but, whatever..
So now over the last few days won't redirect me, it won't let me even enter the login address manually.. (before it wasn't a sure thing but, I could at least do it.)
I am rooted running cog 3.03. (Which does have the 2.2 update) Had the same problem on stock 2.1.
Goes without saying I'm rooted and willing to do what it takes to get wifi working here.. Even if I did happen to have unlimited data.. my school is pretty Iphone heavy... especially at lunch, And some days I am just happy to receive the occassional text I can get from my girlfriend.
But, fact is I don't have unlimited data.. I have extremely limited data.
If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate it.

Rebooting.
"forgetting" then reconnecting. (a million times).
Manually assigning an IP address.
Praying to Cthulhu
Using multiple browsers to see if one works with portal better.

I have never needed to enter a proxy server before with any other device.
And I have never found anything suggesting I would anywhere on the school website.

You might ask around about it. The browser is probably set to auto detect a proxy. You don't have that on the phone.
Although, you do indicate you actually did connect for a bit a while back, so it likely isn't the proxy.

Do you have the login page in your favorites? And does the device connect to the wireless "hotspot"?
I'd test it at a starbucks (or mcdonalds of all places have them too) and see if the issue repeats itself. The ATT hotspot requires you accept the agreement before it allows you to browse.
If it doesn't work.. I'd go back to stock and see if you continue having the same issues. If the issues are resolved when going back to stock - then you'd need to bug DG for a possible fix with his ROM as that is possibly where the problem lies.

Part of the reason i rooted was one or two people said it cleared whatever wifi problems they wre having up..

i think your issue might not be your phone but your school unfortunately... when you are there to connect, are there a lot of others there as well?? for example, where i am at, they have their access points set up and i can select it with my phone, but sometimes i get on and sometimes i dont.. the issue is that they limit the amount of connected users and it might show that you are connected, but you don't in fact have access.. does this sound about like what you are having??
a test (and this will suck) is to let it connect and if it isnt connected, sit there for a while and watch as people leave and see if you connect.. usually they slot peeps in order as they log in via their IP.. so depending on how many users are not able to connect, you might not be the first to get on.. this sux and i know.. it happens here all the time and some times i have drained my laptop battery sitting there trying to connect.. now that i have my phone, 1 or the other will connect first

So I am having serious wifi issues since I installed my Google Home. I use a chromecast too, but I think it's safe to say that it's the Home device that f-ed up wifi network.
I did read all the articles back i January/February that I was not alone with the issue, and as far as I understand - Google rolled out a fix about a month ago.
However, I am still having issues. My wifi drops for no reason (on all devices at the same time, phones included) for a few seconds and then comes back up. I've tried rebooting the router, and updating firmware on the router but no help. Today I pulled the plug to the Google Home until this has been fully resolved.
I love my Home and would like to have it connected. Did the correction that Google rolled out solve it for everyone else here or does anyone still have issues - or is it just me?
How can I see what firmware/software I am running on the Home? I have obviously tried to ask it, but it responds "this is not supported yet".
Any ideas?

I had the same problem on my main router, so I tried connecting it to my secondary router, and it worked, but since that one was supposed to be for the other part of the house, I got a cheapest used router I could (doesn't even support n standard) and created a separate network with different SSID, now I use it only to connect google home devices, chromecasts and other smart home wifi devices, and it works (it still uses my main router's DHCP server, and network, it is just AP with a different SSID), oh and I use channel 6 on that router btw.

Ok, i feel my networking knowledge can come handy here! Lol. Home,three chromcasts, firetv, firestick x2; Nghthawk x8000->asusrtac68u->lan2wanWNR1000(for old 2nd gen sony bluray dlna and one roomstreaming)+wirelessLinksysEA6350->asusrtac88u. Yes, intriguing network! 6bdrm 3300sqft house. Biggest ever afforded! So, needless to say i pay TWC for 100Mbps, capping at 230mbps on the rtac68u ethernet bridge to wired desktop! All running my own modified compiled tomatousb. Linksysea6350 is ddwrt, kongbuild and a PIA so thats w/e stock kong wanted. Well safe to say ive been at making all this work!! What i need from you is topology and setup, running broadcoms or others? I find broadcom way easier to mess with. Second, you running custom or boxed units? And third is the google products subnetted (more of a b***h if you ask me!) And connected 2.4 or 5? N or AC? And how are you allocating resources? IE using QOS or similar? If you can't answer those im need (if unboxed and freed) "logcats", iptables, etc.. more than safe to say, the home not the culprit in sense to it "drowning" out the wifi band, but could for drown resources, IE low grade hardware, hardware beginning stages of failure and one extra workhorse did it, RAM, eMMC, getting the gist? Im gonna say w/slight certainty you might be rebooting not wifi actually cutting out. You also could if custom firmware corrupted something that the home doesnt like. But wont know w/out the numbers to look at. All i got from you is, either a LAN2LAN or bridge as i read your main hib is the DHCP, and is the SSID you "created" a subnet? And your "30" dollar router also could not be up to task.
And sorry if the reply is anything not right, first post ever here! Years of only reading lol. And something wrong with my cheap phone cracked screen phone replacement everytime keyboard is opened! I use a dedicated connection for all things GH related. This stopped the wifi dropout.
