Stock Vanilla Android on the Cappy? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I have searched and searched for a plain vanilla android rom for the captivate an can't find one. Can someone help me out? Thanks

It doesn't exist.
Yet.
Check the Gingerbread thread in the i9000 forum. Once it's up and running fully, then it'll be a hop, skip, and a jump from Captivates. As is it already runs beautifully. They just need to nail down the stability and Camera/Network/GPS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877800

A few people tried to do a vanilla 2.1 when the cappy was released but it didn't really get far.

The closest you'll get to a stock rom is the gingerbread rom in dev right now

The Gingerbread ROM is from the Nexus S, so it will be as vanilla as it gets.

Samsung has never released Source - so no way to do a Vanilla ROM.
BUT.. like the above posters have said there is the Source for the Nexus S and they are making great headway... it will be the closest we get to a "Vanilla" ROM for our phones.

Custom Rom Options?

Hey everyone. I'm posting here because I have a friend with a Captivate and I'm trying to get him to root his phone.
I sent him the link to the 1 click root but I don't know what rom to have him flash. I have an EVO and in the EVO forums we have a sticky with all the custom roms listed so it's easy to see what's there. Is there anything like that for you guys?
He's basically looking for a stable 2.2 rom.

The Captivate DEV scene isn't too large right now, (most of them are in the Vibrant section) We have few custom roms, but the ones you can find, along with mods can be found in the Development section of Captivate.

This is very true. Most went to vibrant because they were ex-G1 users. However the good news is the most of the coding will be the same so they are relatively easy to port. I have a feeling the captivate will not be getting as much dev action, and most people are switching from windows mobile or iPhone and have no android dev experience. But it will eventually speed up
Don't have him flash a custom ROM just to flash a custom ROM. Right now there are a limited number of ROMs, and he can read up on them in the dev to see if there is anything changes in the newer firmwares that would make it worth his time to flash. AFAIK, there are no fully functional, stable 2.2 ROMs (although the leaked build for the i9000/international version does mostly work, I think). There are also a few leaked updates to the 2.1 firmware.

Yea, that's why I am asking if there are any stable 2.2 roms yet. But as I gather there aren't. I'll just tell him to keep his eyes open here.
I've been using Cognition 2.2b6 for about 4 months now with no problems. Seems to be the most stable rom out there for the captivate.
I've been using Cognition 2.3b3 for several weeks and it's working great, the only issue for me is the android email process crashes on startup, I use the gmail app anyway, so its a non issue for me... It took 3 or 4 days to get the correct order of opperations, it seems not everything you find on XDA works for every Captivate, I guess AT&T keeps disabling settings and crapware crippling the phone... But the order that worked for me was:
STOCK AT&T 2.2 FROYO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
ROOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
JI6 KERNEL:
I did not root with the link in this post (was already rooted when I found it)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226
COGNITION:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
SIDELOAD:
Option two worked for me, option one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
Now that I've done all this I could NEVER go back to stock, it's like having a completely different phone... Unbelievable upgrade. F-U AT&T.
Hands down Cognition to start. When he's ready to move on Cognadian Bacon!
Swyping...please read slowly!
Cool. Thanks for all the replies. I just flashed the latest Cognition beta for him yesterday actually. He's so much happier. Haha.

I was gonna say perseption. Its really the most captivate friendly of the ports for other galaxy s phones. You get the reorient kernel with overclock undervoult, universal lagfix, clockwork mod instead of 2e recovery, and you get working bluetooth audio, normal batery life, multiple fonts, password/pin number/pattern security, other things i forgot.
Axura looks amazing but noone will answer my questios about bugs. And there is no known issues listing.

[Q] 2.2, ...just one quick question

So i want to update my rooted captivate to 2.2 finally and i just had a few questions if you guys dont mind. non-noob of course ; )
1) I havent been keeping up with the news on the leaked 2.2 for captivate as much as i should have been but currently is there a good enough version of the leaked 2.2 to be upgrading too?
2) I was not wanting to get a rom or a build with all sorts of frillz and thrills taged along with it (like lag fixes, extra apps and all those shenanigans) , i was just wanting to get the best and newest build or leaked 2.2 for captivate; a clean version, then after that i will probably apply a lag fix of my own.
-If you could kindly link me to the correct thread of what im lookin for, thad be great! haha thx
-BTW: if you think what i plan to do is a bad idea or there are just to amny downsides to doing what im planning on doing ( just using a clean version of the leaked 2.2) please by all means i would love to hear your comments.
PS: this is sorta what im looking for (clean and simple 2.2):I just thought though that sense this is so old, there might be a better one out there.

Do you need the samsung touchwiz stuff? If you only want the launcher, go for Cognition 2.3b6. Based on a captivate froyo leak and the stable captivate 2.2 that you might be looking for.
What do you mean by "if i only want the launcher", please expand on this a little more
And thx for the reply

You may want to define "native apps". Seeing as how we don't have an official release, how are we to know what is native?
And that was more than one question.
Im pretty sure that it was confirmed that 2.2 was officaly released for captivate. Its just that at&t hasnt given it to us yet.

there is absolutely no OFFICIAL release of 2.2 for the captivate. it was confirmed that there are OFFICIALLY UNOFFICIAL LEAKS of 2.2

I'm guessing you want ALL the touchwiz goodness? By launcher I just mean the touchwiz launcher. Just go install one of the froyo leaks if you want everything.
What are the bad things or the downsides to just getting one of the froyo leaks, instead of getting like a cog rom

You get a lot less options. It's a pain in the ass flashing to other roms because I believe recovery is messed up or something (I've never tried out the froyo leak but I heard so many problems with it). Devs continue working on their ROMs whereas froyo leak, it's just a leak and it's done.
Read up on stuff please and try stuff out for yourself. Know what you're flashing before you flash so that you don't have to come on XDA in desperation saying your recovery is busted or your phone is bricked. Reading helps a lot, I can tell from experience.
Aiet, thx

[Q] I9000 Gingerbread not making calls

Hi everyone
I have managed to get Gingerbread working on my I9000 but the mobile network isn't working. Can someone please help?
Thanks
mate................. you must read much more before installing anything in your phone
Are you for real?! Seriously why don't people read on this forum anymore.
gingerbread is a bit old. i installed icecream sandwich
You must be kidding.

If you installed a rom based upon Gingerbread what rom was it did you build it yourself if so what modem did you put in the rom .
Gingerbread as in the next version of Android OS or as in you baked or half baked yourself .
jje
It was supercrurio's rom no big deal though, is easy to flash back isn't it.
Using CyanogenMOD 7 now pretty good.

My advice is to flash back to a stable rom.. CM7 is far from ready

I'm using the middle eastern version, Muchentuchen.
Any gingerbread roms available now are still in testing/not stable, not surprised you'll find issues when using them.

[Q] Is anyone working on GRJ22 2.3.4

I have seen and tried most of the GB roms, including a modded stock JVO for my own personal usage. They are all version 2.3.3 and get better all the way up to JVO.
It occurs to me that nobody has a GRJ22 (2.3.4) rom for anything other than the Nexus S except for the Cyanogen and MIUI roms.
Using my limited skills I have played around with GJR22 sourced from the Nexus S XDA forums but have been unable to get it to boot so far.
Has anyone gotten a working build going? If so, I offer myself (or rather my Captivate) for testing.
Thank you all for your hard work, skill and patience!
Cyanogen mod 7 is based off of GRJ22.

Yes, that was noted in my question (as well as MIUI).
It occurs to me that a rom from the Nexus S should be AOSP and not Samsung based (official Google phone and all that jazz). Maybe that is why no Samsung roms have been made but Cyanogen mod & MIUI have since they are AOSP based.
I probably just answered my own question but had earlier gotten caught up in the "next greatest thing" in roms kind of thinking.

[Q] Why is there no AOSP 2.3 ROM for SGS?

Hey Guys!
I've been busy flashin all those great ROM's you put toghether, and i have one question.
I'd like to have a real AOSP gingerbread ROM, just like the Nexus S, as Google intended.
But all i've seen so far is CM7, and Darky's ROM, but those are all customized ROM's. Is there some problem wich i don't know about, and will there ever be a chance for a pure google ROM?
Thanks in advance,
FEJTH
The SGS is marketed with touch wiz, so you'll never likely get an official AOSP rom. The Nexus S is produced by Samsung for Google
CM7 is the closest thing you will find to basic gingerbread
Sent from my I9000m running Cyanogen Mod Nightly
I recently started flashing cm7 like no other rom, and true...it's the best thing closest to stock aosp! But...that rom is built on aosp, so the basics are there, right?
What is holding back for a IMHO simple stock rom..?
