[Q] Has anyone's Keyboard disappeared? - Nook Color General

I have an autonootered 2.12.25 NC running ADW launcher and a few misc apps (Angry Birds, Astro, Root Explorer, Titanium, etc). All was running great until last night all of a sudden my keyboard disappeared. If I clicked on a field to enter text (search, pandora login, gmail, shop, etc) The white search box would pop up but NO keyboard. So I went to SETTINGS==> KEYBOARD and the menu starts to pop up, but then closes. I looked in system/app and I have the LatinIME.apk in there so no I didn't inadvertently uninstall it. In fact, I haven't installed any additional keyboards.
I also noticed that after the keyboard disappeared when I checked the Market the apps were limited to returning only like 10 apps when browsing the "Just In" apps. (All I could do since I couldn't search without a keyboard) I was thinking that somehow I must have been flashed back to non-root or something but I still had Superuser and the Market and was able to access the root files via Root Explorer. I am wiping/re - nootering now (THANK YOU Titanium!) but was wondering if anyone had experienced this or knew how to prevent it from happening again? Preesh!
P.S. Man I can't wait for a Recovery Image!

Did you check in the app Nook Color Tools to see if the keyboard selection was unchecked? Just a thought. Good luck.

[Q] Some questions about a newly rooted NC

Okay, so far, mostly good, but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've used autonooter for 1.0.1 (after upgrading the firmware to 1.0.1 of course) and also disabled the cell and telephony services by renaming them to .OLD.
1) How do you get the web button to actually launch a different browser than the stock one? I've installed Dolphin and Dolphin HD and set each in turn as the "default browser" in their settings and mutliple times after multiple reboots. But when I use the 'web' button on the NC menu, it always takes me to the stock browser. What am I missing here?
2) I don't want the 'email' app running. I don't need it, don't want it (have web-based email for everything I need), but can't figure out how to keep it from running. Or maybe I just don't understand what it does? Can someone explain either the necessity of email or how to shut it off?
3) I also notice something called 'social' running. Have no clue what it is and figure I probably don't want or need it running. Can anyone explain this one for me (why I need it or how I shut it off)?
4) Has anyone found a workaround to replace needing a reboot to make installed apps show on the extras page?
5) How to you manage the 'extras' page? As the amount of installed apps grows, the page is becoming more and more difficult to use. Is this something simple I'm missing?
6) I noticed the open book/recently reading icon doesn't work now unless I use the stock launcher. I've read that all you have to do is run it once (then go back to softkeys or whatever) and the button works, but also read that disappears each time you restart (see above). Is there any workaround to having to do this?
7) Is is possible to remap the other keys? For example, make the open book button do something else? Or the keys in the menu that comes up?
8) Lastly...what size microSD card does everyone recommend? Seems anything over 4GB would just be a waste.
Thanks to anyone who responds!

Don't use the Web button. Launch the browser.
Set it to sync manually. Fixed.
Ignore, part of B&N
Use a launcher. ADW Launcher works great.
See above
Pretty sure if you hit the softkey for the B&N apps, hit Library, then tap the Book icon you're talking about it will launch the last book. 2 extra taps.
Those aren't keys, and let's just say no.
Anything under 8G ain't going to have much music or data. Up to you.
Thanks khaytsus but...
1) When you say "launch" the browser, from where do you mean? I tried the web icon in Zeam and it does the same thing. Are you saying the only way to use an alternate browser is to open extras or apps and launch it? So 'set as default' doesn't work on any of these browsers?
2) I set up the email check frequency to never but it still runs once rebooting.
4) Tried using the applications icon in Zeam and ADW, but it still doesn't show newly installed applications until a reboot.
6) Thanks for the suggestion, but the book button still doesn't work.
Any other thoughts?

I'm not sure I understand why that's relevant. Have you posed that question to the hundreds of others on here who have done so?
I am curious why people choose to root.
Just root your own and find out.
Sent from my hacked nook color.
I am rooted. I rooted because I thought this $249 eReader would make a great tablet with the right hacks/rom. So far the market, gmail, calendar and others things work great. Waiting patiently for CM7.
4/5 Theres no readin to use the b&n bar. Use the app drawer (from adw or zeam) to launch your apps. In the app drawer hold down your browser (use dolphin hd or another, the default is no good) icon and it will make a shotcut on the main screen. You dont really ever have to use the default bn stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872295 Do this to put books on your homescreen. Even when u close a book it will remember the last page u were on.
6 Its broke, havent seen a work around.

[Q] Nookie Froyo SDCARD Bootable Issues and Resolutions

I loaded the Nookie Froyo to SDCARD and have been having weird issue all of which has been reported here and in other forums elsewhere. I thought I would take a few minutes and list them out and how I fixed it and also list a few I am still having to see if there is any resolution.
These resolutions are based on posts from this forum and others. I do not have the links for them all as I have scoured so many and tried so many things I stopped book marking them.
My Nookie Froyo is 0.6.8 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922324 (Thank you Brianf21) and I used the free EASEUS Partition Manager to extend #4 to the end of the 8GB SDCARD (http://www.partition-tool.com/). I am also using the multi-u-boot.bin from rookie1 (sweet thing as I can boot SDCARD or stock Nook Color w/out taking out the card!)
If I missed credit to anyone please forgive me. I am not a developer, just an end user that likes to play and am working off of other people’s hard work.
Problem 1: Market downloads apps and then stops and won’t download anymore.
Resolution: Go into Settings/Application Settings/Manage applications. Select ALL. Scroll down to Market and tap it. Tap Force Stop. Tab Clear Data and tap ok to any warning messages. Go to Google Services Framework in All Applications and tap Clear Data. Tap OK and and warning. Power off and back on.
Market should work now and if you got sign in errors for Goggle Talk that should also work. On first run of Market you may not see all of you installed apps. After I installed an app, exited market and went back in all installed Apps were present and accounted for. Been good since doing this and will continue to monitor.
Problem2: WiFi doesn’t work after sleep.
Resolution: Go into Settings/Wireless Networks and Settings/Wifi Settings Hit the Menu Button and tap Advanced. Select Wifi Sleep policy and set it to Never.
Go back to Wireless Networks and Settings and tap Mobile networks. Deselect anything in there that is 2g/3g (I have a nook color so not needed for me).
Run a file manager program that gives you root access (I used Root Explorer). Go into /System/App and rename Phone.apk to Phone.apk.old. Rename TelephonyProvider.apk also to .old. Power off and back on again as you will eventually get errors the phone doesn’t work. Again I am on a Nook Color so no phone and no need to load it.
Problem3: Can’t get the latest Google Framework to load.
problem 3 was resolved kinda by a new build from the developer
Problem 4: Market not showing all apps (protected apps missing)
edit the build.prop using something like root explorer. change the ro.build.fingerprint line to what is shown below (make a backup copy just in case). go into device settings and clear the market cache (not data) and force stop. clear the data for the google framework and force stop. reboot your nook and go into the market. search for something that was missing like vevo. if it apears you should be good.
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2.1/FRG83D/60505:user/release-keys

SwiftKeyX

I have the phone version, not the tablet edition, and that may be part of my problem (but I doubt it...)
There is no "Language and keyboard" setting, either in the regular settings menu or in the Nook Color settings area.
While the Nook Color app does allow for changing keyboard, it says that the .apk must be in /system/app
- that isn't a problem - I used AndroZip to b/u the swiftkey.apk file to the SD card, then used root explorer to copy it to /system/app (yeah - I'm sure there are easier/better ways, but that's what I did...)
It still won't let me change the keyboard to swiftkey (which, btw, is FREE today in the Amazon Marketplace. I'd purchased it in the regular market on my phone previously, so installing it on the Nook was easy).
Does anyone have insight into how to get this done... or if it can be?
Thanks,
~K
I got it to work, at least partially. The keyboard shows up, but I don't see the predictions and the popups on keypress are distracting. But perhaps you'll have better success than I did.
However, as far as your problem goes--I think you should check the permissions on the file you copied to /system/app. I used File Expert to copy the file over, but I found that I had to edit the permissions afterwards to match the permissions of the other files in that folder. Then I reboot the nook and the nook tools app recognized the other keyboard. After that, launch the swiftkey x configurator from your app drawer and follow the steps there. A lot of the settings come up as blank buttons on the nook, so I did the process in parallel on my android phone so I knew what I was doing.
Good luck! And if you figure out how to make the predictions work, I'd love to know!

Is anybody able to get the GMAIL personalization to work?
I'm prompted for my username and password, but when I submit them I get a blank window (where I should be able to select "grant access")
thanks

Hopefully you've fixed this in the time since you first posted, but for anybody else trying to do the same: The new keyboard option won't show up in NOOK Color Tools after you copy the .apk to /system/app until you do a reboot.
I had the best luck with Smart Keyboard Pro. You can set a high contrast theme with no animations whatsoever, so it's easy to see and it doesn't flicker except for toggling between upper- and lower-case letters. I have never been able to get predictions to work with Swiftkey or Smart Keyboard on my NST. I do shut off the auto-caps and other features that can be hard to use on the NST.

I have never been able to get prediction working on the NST, so personalization wouldn't help.

Cannot install certain apps (Dolphin Browser) by hook or crook on Froyo Rooted Nook

Noob, and sorry for what must surely be a previously-resolved issue, but I cannot for the life of me get the Dolphin Browser installed in my v1.3 ROM-rooted color nook.
I am neither incompetent nor lazy, although I may be stupid. I was having a merry old time with auto-nooted eclair color nook, when I decided to update to Froyo, following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Following everything to the letter, I quickly had a shiny new Nook Color (after polishing with Windex) that had a prettier intro screen and most of the prior functionality.
Re-installing my favorite apps, I notice that Dolphin browser no longer appears in marketplace as an available app. This is not my only Android device, and from the Android marketplace website, I can see both the Dolphin Mini and HD browsers as available and "installed" on my Droid inc2, but not available for anything else (nook).
"No problem," I think, "I'll just download the apk and side-load it". Problem: cannot install non-marketplace apps error comes up... Okay... Install LCD Resolution and re-set to 160, clicking the default checkbox, retry, re-boot, retry... pull up NookColor Tools and make sure the "allow non-marketplace apps" checkbox is ticked, reboot, retry...Uninstall Market updater and wipe data and cache for Maket... No dice. Cannot see in Marketplace, cannot install apk. Re-boot, wipe data, un-install, re-install, and re-check and un-check and re-boot in every sequence I can think of.
Google the hell out of it (lots of re-boots and ticking/un-ticking checkboxes). Find tons of threads related to 1.2/eclair versions or problems of no working marketplace, and other unrelated stuff.
some facts:
- Android Marketplace is working but appears to be an older version(?) (the green-and-white list-format, not the gray and black graphical format I get on my phone). However, it's still the same version that got me Dolphin just fine on the same hardware when it was eclair, Dolphin just no longer shows up as an available app.....
- In NookColor Tools, the "allow non-market apps" checkbox is now unlabeled, there is just an unnamed checkbox that, in my old install, used to be labeled "Allow non-market apps" or some such. I'm assuming this is a formatting/display issue. No other menu option offers anything similar.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could even just verify the two above points: if you tell me that your Froyo rooted Nook shows the newer marketplace or some such, or shows Dolphin browser as an available app, then that confirms that I have done something wrong or that my nook is weird, or something.
Aggressive googling seems to turn up some people with similar problems, getting broken advice from people running eclair nooks. Lots of blind-leading-the-stupid, with people on different OS telling you to go "settings" (which on my rooted Froyo CN only opens the stock Barnes and Noble settings).
I'm not averse to re-rooting or to PC-based or command-line-type side-loading. I'm mostly just looking for someone to confirm that they are running Dolphin on a Froyo Nook, and ideally some indication of how you got it working.
Please don't tell me to try Opera or Firefox or that the stock browser is better or just as good... I have every available browser installed on multiple devices, and none but Dolphin work properly for certain things.
Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry again if I am missing something stupid.

[Q] Things disappearing at random?

Bought a Mini 2 yesterday. Rooted, used Titanium Backup to restore my apps and settings from my One XL, and used HTC Transfer to get text messages, contacts, etc. All seemed good...until I tried to set up ringtones. The phone ringtone was fine, as it would allow me to browse for any audio file I wanted, but when selecting the ringtone for notifications, Facebook, etc I just got a blank list. There was absolutely nothing there. After fiddling for a bit, I managed to get some custom audio to show up, but still none of the default stuff and even then files were wandering in and out of visibility.
No big deal, as I eventually got everything set up right. I installed AdFree, which recommended rebooting. So I did. And it reset a bunch of my settings, including the ringtones I'd spent all last night setting up, and deleted the text I got this morning (all other texts, which were originally from my previous handset, were untouched). So I went to set up the ringtones again, only to find that all the default ringtones were readily available, as were my custom ones, all in the one list. But I still had ads, so AdFree was apparently not doing anything.
I don't recall exactly what I did after that, but I was reading through the manual and fiddling with a few things, and when it got to the bit about sliding right or left from the lock screen to get to certain home pages, I went to try it...and it demanded I swipe up, refusing to work if I did anything else. And I had no lock screen shortcuts.
I've also lost the default HTC wallpapers; when selecting that option I just get a blank screen.
What on earth is going on?
I opened AdFree and updated, and the ads disappeared. Rebooted the phone, and they came back. And now I can't get rid of them at all.
I've also lost the ability to add lock screen widgets. The only thing I can do from the lock screen is swipe up, either from the padlock icon to unlock the phone at the screen at which it was locked, or from just below the padlock to open a Google search.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Yeah...hard reset, and dont install AdFree app. it seems its causing all the problems. If you don't like ads, use a firewall instead.
I personally recommend and use Data Defender. But there are others.
PS:Also if the app requires internet, live with the adds and support the developer.
Good Luck
How will the hard reset affect the root?
What does data defender do, just prevent apps connecting to the internet? I find most of the in-app ads less intrusive than the web browser ones. Snopes in particular throws up a full-screen pop-up on every page, which is just obnoxious.
ETA: Actually, it's not AdFree that's causing issues (or at least it's not just AdFree), as the default ringtones/notifications/alarms were inaccessible before I installed it. It was only after installing it that they came back.
Hard reset shouldn't unroot your phone
If you prevent apps from accessing internet, there won't be any ads.
Sent from my HTC One mini 2 using XDA Free mobile app
Seems to mostly be working, but I've lost the ability to use custom notifications for Messages, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and twicca. If I use ES File Explorer to choose a file, I get a 'wrong filetype' error, despite the fact that the audio is in the same format as the default notification audio (FLAC). If I choose Media Storage, it just shows the default sounds with none of my custom sounds. Previously, I'd somehow managed to get my custom sounds to show up in that list.
EDIT: Figured it out. Had to move/copy the files into the 'notifications' folder on the SD card. Don't recall having done that previously, so I have no idea how I'd got it working before, but it seems like it's all good now.
