I purchased a Nook last Friday at BN. The BN employee was giving me his entire sales pitch which I let him because I wanted to look at it before I was going to buy it. He went through the usual stuff of being an awesome e-reader but then went through another tangent that it will be able to moonlight as tablet.
He showed me some of the extra apps and web browser then he said that the nook will be getting an update later this month and that you will be able to install apps. (I remember hearing about the Nook rumors and denial. ) I asked him you mean the Nook will get the Google market place? He said no, it will be a more controlled environment by Barnes and Noble. We want to prevent things like porn and malware going to your device. So that means a Nook App Store? Interesting, huh? I would rather have Google market place but for the average consumer this would be huge.

This has pretty much been known from the beginning. It will be an update, but it will not be a 2.2 update...
I really see no point for B&N to ever got to 2.2 if they are going to keep a closed type of App store.
I don't know anything about Android, other than 2.2 has flash. That's the biggest reason I want 2.2. To me the web without flash is very 10 years ago.

I have been hearing something about a switchover from Flash to WebM..Not sure what its all about.
I am certain at some point the Nook is going to get Flash with 2.2 or 2.3, but probably later than sooner...

In Theory yes it could be done.....
In Reality, with out the Source code, not alot can be done to get this ported over.
I just wont to try. I need to say my Palm Pixy Plus is one of my favorite phones but it seems it wont be updated any further, and HPalm announced today this TPad only problem for me is 9,7".
7" is my favorite form factor for tablets but Android 2.1 feels limited. 3.0 is not there yet.
Its the best time to play around with my Nook but as I'm saying havent had much luck yet, well I have a cool name WebNook.

WebOS is a copywrited OS. It would be illegal, immoral, and very near impossible to do. HP bought it for over a billion dollars, so they will protect it. Android is "good enough" for the NOOK.

Yeah 2.1 is rather limited, but keep in mind that soon CM7 will be out for the nook with I think 2.2 or 2.3 and it will be much better, and as far as 3.0 goes we don't even have the official release or source yet, the build people are playing with is the SDK Preview release, which is far from fully Honeycomb.
So there is still plenty of Growing room in the nook.
There was a group of people in the CDMA hero forum that attempted to port WebOS to the Hero. I think they got it working but stopped due to copyright. I searched for the thread using both the XDA search and google. It looks like XDA removed it.
I'm not trying to justify myself from trying (still unsuccessfully, and I dont want to make any money from it) to port WebOS to my Nook but what I remember Windows Phone is copywrited OS too and this whole Portal is build around people who are making new roms, and porting new aps to devices. Plus theres nothing better to learn on than something that you shouldn't.

Thanks for checking it out for me.
WebOS is linux and if Nook can run one it mean it can run more, need to reed more how people ported Ubuntu and other Androids than 2.1

2.3 is what they are working on. When that releases, not only will we get all the 2.3 goodness, we get rid of all the B&N garbage. That's what we're all waiting with baited breath for.

I really like the B&N Library Software and the Ability to Purchase Books on the device, Granted the B&N Launcher is junk, But I like the Library App, Maybe we can rip it off and still use it?
I did just try Aldiko, which is very nice, But I like the Easy of Syncing my library with the B&N Library that comes with the Nook Color, Its also far Superior to the nook app of the Market which is laughable.

I recently tried Aldiko also, and quite like it. It seems pretty superior to barnes and noble reader. The only downside, as you said, is losing the simple sync with B&N. I'm sure people would come up with a simple enough work around though. I personally don't buy books from them, so it's not too much of a concern for me. perhaps they could be synced with the nook app in the market and then once downloaded could be added to the Aldiko library?

The Windows Phone Roms are for phones that are licensed to run said OS. You won't find a WP7 ROM for the NC for example, because it's not licensed to run it. You could probably get your mitts on the SDK, hack around and get WebOS kind of, sort of running on the NC, but there is no way you could make any argument that it was legal.
I used to have a Palm Pre Plus, and besides the factory defects of 3 units, I wasn't really impressed with the OS either.
For me nothing beats my Nexus One. So having my Nook run CM7 is way more enjoyable.

My wife would like apps on her NookColor.
My thought was just autonootering her Nook.
Can anyone think of a compelling reason to use Froyo, HC etc for her.

No... just keep Eclair if its for your wife, everything works ... if we ever get 2.2 then upgrade to a rooted 2.2... IMO

i agree 100%, messing with froyo, cm7, hc is good but you lose the great nook reader apps, (theres an market version but its not as good) and there not working perfectly yet.

Yep, my wife (and myself too!) still on Auto Nootered 2.1 stock B&N because it's the most robust solution right now. No /boot eating itself, no market problems, the B&N Software works right, etc..
For the wife primarily, since she has purchased several childrens books and such, plus for her I like to Keep it Simple.
For me, I just like that it "just works" and no fuss. Would I like 2.2? Sure. The speed bump from 2.1 to 2.2 on my Nexus One was nice, but it's not worth the little annoyances and problems that happen randomly.

+1 to this post exactly! Do autonooter up to 1.1 with a replacement launcher and disabled updates. My wife LOVES her 2.1, 1.1 B&N NC and has had zero complaints with watching movies, reading books, playing games, etc. She's not tech savvy at all either, so that's a testament to the NC's solidness running eclair. However this did require me tweaking a great deal of things overtime. If suggest you spend the first week with it in your arsenal tweaking it as need be so that when you five it to your wife it runs smoothly.

It seems like with 1.1.0 autonootered you can still get the instore stuff, although I haven't tested it myself (even though I live less than a mile from a B&N). Mine is straight stock 1.1.0/autonooter with the zeam launcher and it's damned near perfect. It actually works better than my first one (my wife's 1.0.1 unfortunately!) where the reading icon doesn't seem to work.
But on this one, all the functionality works perfect from what I can see. As a matter of fact, with the basic nook wallpaper background and zeam, you can't really tell it's rooted on first glance. As a matter of fact, my daughter got a big kick out of the 'read to me' book that comes on it, which she used after rooting.
It's the perfect solution, as far I'm concerned.
Just realized you were asking a more refined question: after rooting, is stock launcher required for in store experience. I want to try this today and will let you know.
There are now widespread reports of B&N updating the stock NC to 2.2 with Flash and B&N Market in a couple of weeks.
Waiting until then is probably the best bet for those who like the B&N features.
But admittedly the ability to wait a couple of weeks is probably rare these days.

Of course, the stock Nook Color already has "apps".
Perhaps there is a specific app that she wants ?
Considering that most apps already run on the NC with Nookie Froyo installed, then it seems likely that the B&N Market will attract most of the popular apps, since they won't have to change anything in the code.
About the only apps that you will definitely not see is Reader Apps.
Lastly, "Wife Approval Factor" is a term that describes your wife's approval of something that you bought for yourself - 51 inch plasma TV, 4 foot high stereo speakers, etc.

You gentleman do realize that sometimes it's the WIFE who wants the complicated stuff and the husband who is still running stock, right? I had to configure tasker this morning on my husbands nexus one so that it would turn the sound off during meetings and back on afterwards, than installed CM7 on my nook color for kicks.
Having said that the stock is the most stable right now, and there are very few apps you can't install. (The only problems I had were with 2.2+ apps [stupid zombies] and things that required the phone stack [swype].)

Did you do something in particular to get the reading icon to work again? I've been on nootered 2.1 for a while now and the reading icon hasn't worked since I rooted it. I just assumed it was an issue with the 2.1 port.
Also, in regards to the OP, keep it stock 2.1 for your wife. I have yet to find an app that doesn't work on it, it's extremely stable, and the stock reader app is almost too bad ass to give up for 2.2, cm7, or the buggy as all hell HC.

Actually thats the next big test. Does using another launcher still permit in-store abilities?

I think it has to do with where you start. On my wife's nook, which was autonootered from 1.0.1, the reading icon doesn't work. On my nook, autonootered from 1.1.0, the reading icon does work. Simple as that. I'd love to be able to offer some slick thing I did to get it to work, but I didn't. Probably try and see if the 1.1.0 r2 thing will fix it for her but she's operational right now anyway.

Tested this morning. Works perfectly. As soon as I connected to the B&N network, the shop popped up and had the banner with free books, etc. I even downloaded the Oprah biography to "start reading" for free. I use Zeam as my default launcher.
My daughter rooted her 1.1 color nook and is thrilled with the 'cool apps'
She hasn't tested the instore functionality, but she did install the home switcher so she can switch back to the B&N home. I think that should allow instore functionality.
She posted a youtube video of how she rooted it. Thanks to everyone here for making it so easy!
Specs-wise, I mean? The community here looks awesome, and the devs look fantastic, but it is 7-month old hardware. I suppose it won't much matter for what I'd be doing with it, but I was curious to get some input.
Pls note that it is a pure eReader that can turn into full tablet.
How will the next gen. NC look? Nobody knows yet.
I just bought one and running CM7 off the SD and love it. I use it as a tablet and have readers on it and don't miss the B&N software but can always take card out and use it for that. I think for $249.00 and you can get like new refurbished ones from B&N for about $200 and I hear they even come with a case, you can not beat the deal. Love the screen! I would buy one again.

If you want to play some Angry Birds, watch netflix, catch the news, take some notes, and do everything your phone can do on a larger screen (minus having a Mic and a phone), then this would be for you.
Specs don't mean jack (to a point) - it's rather what it can do for you.
At a $250 price point at with only slightly lower specs then the Galaxy tab (and less then half the cost) which includes a new B&N membership ($27 discount with B&N membership + $25 for the membership), it's a good deal if it meets your wants/needs.

I agree for the most part, but the stylus comment is interesting.
I'm using one. Is there a reason you'd not recommend it for stylus?

Thanks for the thoughts. Actually, I want to read. Mostly. I read a lot of pdfs, and the Kindle can't deal with pdfs well, and it's a pain to have to use a computer. Plus, I love playing around with CM7!

From all my research, the worst issue with this device is the sensitivity of the screen. Even with the sensitivity hacked, it does not perform continuous swipes. So things like drawing and writing (from what I understand) are not all that great on this device.

Then this would sound like your kind of toy. Kindle seems to work well, and so does the Nook app, but I have found that the Nook app has certain books that fail to load (namely a few that come with the download). I haven't looked into the reason for that, but it says "unsupported format." I just haven't cared enough about it to really research that particular issue. Outside of that, it's been pretty impressive for the price.

That makes it basicly unbrickable? And how is the progress with cm7? Is mostly everything working? Thanks guys.

With the NC, you have to try really hard to brick it. If you are worried about bricking, run CM7 from an SDcard. As long as you don't do anything silly like formatting the internal emmc or something, you're safe.
If you choose to go the stock + root, or install CM7 to internal route, you'll end up installing something called ClockworkMod which has the various recovery, backup, flash type things to help prevent bad things.
And status of CM7? CM7 NC edition is what all the vendor *supported* Gingerbread's should be aspiring towards. That's how good it is. *fanboi*

Since the nook boots from uSD first (hard wired and coded into the hardware) it is unbrickable...
That being said... always generate images of all partitions prior to messing around with it... there is device specific information stored on mmcblk0p2 and mmcblk0p3... if you lose those partitions and don't have backups... it can get quite interesting restoring it... if you have the backups... its pretty easy.

I'm pretty experiance with android and rooting, I have an epic 4g... hopefully if I get this ill put on cm7 cuz we don't have a working version yet on the epic .... and do you think a refurb would be good for me to get, I want to spend the least amount of $. And would I just walk into b&n and say I want a refurb nook color? Thanks man.

Most folks have been getting refurbs from the BN store on ebay. AFAIK, those come with a 1yr warranty. My local BN's don't stock refurbs, so I don't know if that's even a possibility.

It seems its kinda weird how they use some terminology or sometimes don't when compared to phones...
Anyways great great tablet. Rivals any screen I think. Use Nook Tweaks to boost the internal speaker, just do it carefully and Dahlgin's OC Kernel to OC to 1.2Ghz.... Your Tab will like it more.
Use the instructions here. It will allow you to dual boot which is the basic idea. With the instructions, all of CM7 gingerbread runs completely on the SDcard, so all you are corrupting is the SD if you mess something up. Nook Color OS stays untouched!
Also if on Windows 7, use the Win32DiskImager. Recognized my drive better.

Will I have to buy a class 10 sd for running on sd?
Edit: also with themeing the nook would I have to change the resoulution if I were to port something over too the nook from the epic? Or would the hdpi be good enough?

Class speeds are not as important as are random read speeds. From what I've read, Sandisk Class 4 is the king here.
Absolutely correct - Actually, the higher the class of card that is used, the more horror stories I hear! Stick with a basic SanDisk class 4 card and you'll be fine.

I would definitely recommend it, along with ezPDF reader if you will be reading a lot of PDFs. From my own experience, it was a pain to get a "good" NC -- the first couple had screen issues/dead pixels and I had to fight with B&N's customer service to finally get one without major issues. Most people seem to get perfect ones right from the start though. Beyond that, CM7 is FAN-TASTIC. I had some random issues with it on a microSD card (an 8gb a-data class 6, so it could have been issues with the card) but it's been super reliable after i installed to emmc. As far as specs go, it will easily overclock and i can't tell a difference in performance compared to my thunderbolt. I've still yet to see a comparable tablet for this price, based on performance and screen quality.
So while we still wait for official ICS Motorola announces that we quite possibly might get JB.

That $100 would go nice towards a Maxx HD. Of course the Developer Edition.:good:
Unless they just roll out JB instead of ICS, I'd guess we'll see JB some time next summer. No faith at this point.
Very sad all the new phones lack removable batteries, perhaps we'll see a Bionic HD too, with removable battery, lapdock option. I think the Bionic concept is great, if Motorola would actually make it work well and then market it well.
By the time the Bionic has JB via OTA, i expect to be using another phone for a while.

It's been said the Bionic has been EOLed, not sure how accurate that is. Good chance they don't consider it "existing", but rather "old". I mean, it's been out a whole year! I would not be shocked if we got F'ed on this, but I am hoping.

We will get JB. They said all devices from 2011 and this year will get it. I watched their presentation live on YouTube. My question is will they just skip ics and go directly to JB.
I'm interested in their new phones having a developer edition. This is long overdue. I also believe that if you want a long battery life, it has to be put in like it is with the Razr. I suggest watching today's presentation over reading about it.

Yes but they also had a disclaimer right after that that said there are a few devices it just won't work on and won't be done. They didn't say which ones. That is apparently the target for the $100 - those that can't get JB.

Well, let's define the criteria. I'd start with ones they said couldn't do ICS. Since we have dual-core and 1gb, we were slated to get ICS. So, there is still a chance Jelly Bean is in the cards. But unless they can get the bugs worked out in ICS, Jelly Bean will take a while to develop.
I'm just curious as what is so great about jelly bean? It won't have flash, and regardless of what people believe, most video sites plan on staying with flash. The big content providers don't like that HTML 5 exposes the video files that they can currently hide with flash, and will do like what hulu has done and release an app for mobile users. When you dig deeper than the major headlines, you will find out that many don't want to use HTML 5 for video streaming.
In my case, my college's website uses flash to access assignments online and without flash, I lose one of the more important uses of my phone. Online videos and college are the only reason I'm not running the ICS leak because flash didn't work for me and adobe aalready pulled it from the market. I know it's a disappointing move for the Razr owners who went from being able to watch online videos, to getting an update and no longer being able to watch them anymore.
I've learned not to listen to what some of the tech writers say because they are the same ones who thought Google + would take over Facebook and that the windows phone would stand a chance competiting with android. My belief is that the content providers will use this as an opportunity to charge for content that was free in the past for mobile use, which Hulu already has.

You should be able to side load flash player (hopefully). I just loaded it on my Nexus 7 and it works perfectly with an AOSP browser.

You can still install it to your device from play.google.com. Here is a link it doesn't show up when you search for it. It should also be under your previously installed apps.

Sorry guys, I think that Flash just will not be supported no matter what in 4.0 and up. Here is a direct quote from the Market's link: "Flash Player WILL NOT be supported on any device shipped with or upgraded to an Android version beyond Android 4.0.x".
OTA JB would make me SUPER HAPPY!! Now I''ll just have to hold my breath..........
We should be getting it, our phone is certainly capable. Don't know if they'll decide to just forgo ICS and skip to JB or not but my guess is all of the phones with 1 GB ram will be getting it, which leaves the Droid 3 and X2 users who will probably be getting the $100 vouchers. Of course when we get the updates is another story.

just because it won't be supported doesn't mean that it won't work. it works fine on my kindle fire running JB. others have posted that it works fine on their Nexus 7.
in regards to the other discussion, i cant imagine that the bionic would fall into the category that JB won't work on. especially given that it is nearly identical (spec wise) to the gnex.
JB DOES work on the Bionic. I have it. (CM10 Kexec for Bionic alpha). It is SO SMOOTH! Google Speak is way faster then Siri. I did a side by side test with my Bionic and my friends iPhone 4S. Will it or won't it work should not be debated. The big question is when will we get it. That is what we should be asking.
