[Q] EVO vs EVO SHIFT 4G - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

which one would you get? i cant wait any longer seeing as how my hero broke. do you think there will be lots of devs working on the shift?

the shift isn't out and hasn't been announced yet, if you need a phone now you get the evo

we know a lot of the specs of the shift though. the processor is the same as the g2 which is better than the evo and so is the gpu. im mainly worried about the devs. seeing as how evo has a very active section. i dont know whether the shift will get any.

Jan 9th appears to be the best guess release date based on leaked documents.
What it comes down to, is if you want a physical keyboard or not. The internals will be different, but nothing drastic. Lots of working being done on the EVO, so I dont think you'll go wrong either way.

The Shift's screen is too small and has too much extra space under the buttons for my liking. Design fail.

the shift will be able to be clocked to 1.9ghz which is crazy. but i think the evo will be better in the long run with devs and support

Where do you hear 1.9? It looks like its only a 800 mhz processor in the phone.

There were a couple of comments in the comment section that referenced that same processor was o/c'd to 1.9 on the G2. I do believe
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/21/htc-evo-shift-4g-spotted-in-the-wild-said-to-have-800mhz-cpu/

yeah. the processor in the shift is the same as in the g2. the devs on the g2 have been able to overclock it to 1.9 stable.
check this out: http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/
g2 own all other phones right now with the processor

WoW! I want one lol
Got a upgrade March 1st, if this pics up devs than I may get it rather than evo or epic

I really don't imagine there wouldn't be a good dev scene for it, after all, it IS a HTC device, plus it is a CDMA G2. Going to be picking up one whenever Sprint tells me I can, ha.

I could be be wrong but i believe nfinite said he was considering the Shift

Personally, I believe that getting the evo would be better in the long run. The Evo is a premier phone, the original 4g, where as the Shift is just a crappy replication of the evo. If you REALLY want a physical keyboard go for it. Otherwise Evo all the way.

Well, personal preference. It's a decent size I suppose, I'm just used to the size of my brother's Evo. But the extra screen bezel really bugs me. That's my main drawback.

Eh, just less incentive for my wife to want one as well, resulting in awkward stares over video chat during silence as I make my way home.

well i believe i found a solution. radio shack has the evo for $99 and a 30 day return policy with no restocking fee. ill get that and wait to see what happens with the shift. win win

[Q] Just about to go buy my Evo and then...

So I'm about to go buy an Evo today and I'm just about to leave and I get an email notice from BestBuy saying the the new Nexus S is going to hit stores soon and I stop...is it even worth buying an Evo now or should I hold off!? I got my Hero a few months before the Evo came out because I needed a new phone and now I am due for an up-grade but should I hold off, will Sprint release something soon that blows the Evo out of the water?
Anyone have any insight?

Well, I'm hoping the Nexus S comes out on Sprint. I'd like a high end phone, but no matter how many times I hold one, the Evo just seems too big.
Nexus S will probably NOT be coming to Sprint, though I can envision Samsung releasing Touchwiz versions eventually (well, maybe). As for Sprint coming out with something better than the EVO sooner than later, well, who knows, besides them. You can always just get the EVO, and if something better comes along (by IF I mean definitely, as that's how technology works obviously) soon, resell it and pay maybe $1-150 tops out of pocket.
well what's really the diff. between the nexus one and the nexus s....snapdragon vs hummingbird.....what else...second camera on nexus s? and htc vs samsung?
cause i know nexus one +custom rom = off the chart benchmark results.....too bad sprint can't use it....

Sprint is coming out with the Evo Shift, which is a smaller Evo on January 6.
Well I like the size of the Evo so no sense in waiting for the smaller one. Looks like I will just get the Evo and then figure out how to get CM6 on it lol.

Nexus S is going to t-mobile, unless you get it unlocked. It's not much of an upgrade from the Nexus 1, front facing cam but not as good as EVO I believe, also there's no microSD card its all 16gb internal. No touchwiz. Oh yea, and its a samsung.
As much as I want to upgrade I'll wait for the feb/march batch of phones, I don't want to drop $529 for a phone that will be outdone in a major way in as little as 2-3 months.

It's a faster processor, at least. Lack of MicroSD is really dumb, don't really understand the thinking behind that one myself. It is a Samsung, but yeah, no Touchwiz is a positive, the GPS issues the Galaxy-S series seems to have been plagued with have apparently been ironed out with (at least I think I read that.. maybe don't quote me on that), and since it's a developer phone it'll be dogfed the latest updates from Google, also a big plus (especially with future implementation of NFC and some other more behind the scenes stuff like that).
However, still interested in how the reviews and general reception of it turn out, especially since T-Mobile already has the G2 and MyTouch 4G, both really nice phones on their own. Also, this news makes me really happy: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/08/evo-shift-4g-aka-htc-knight-speedy-shows-up-in-accessory-pic/
Sprint-branded Desire Z? Probably the best phone to have on the carrier if that pans out sooner than later.
Other issues with the Nexus S I've heard around the webz:
1. No LED notifications
2. Only 480p video recording

I don’t think any of the Galaxy S phones have LED notifications.
I'm not so much worried about whether the Nexus S will be coming to Sprint I am worried that there might be something coming from Sprint that will make the Evo look like junk. I got my Hero thinking it was top dog and months later I was kickin' myself in the ass. And now that the Evo has established it's dominance I am afraid to jump on the bandwagon incase something superior hits.
Well, it looks like the "Knight"/"Speedy"/"Evo Shift 4G" should be announced sometime sooner than later. Since it'll be a Sprint-branded Desire Z/G2 seemingly, I'd say that's worth holding out for.

My close friend works for sprint they are getting the htc Knight aka baby evo 4g which has NO front facing camera and is not better then the EVO. That's all they are telling sprint employees right now. Everything else is just rumors and wishes. I also have a friend who works for t-mobile(chick I'm messing around with lol) who says tmo is getting the nexus s they already have some accessories for it in the back and the specs are pretty much same as nexus one but WITH a front facing camera. Biggest downfall is that its a Samsung so need I say more about that company.

It's already known Nexus S is hitting T-Mobile. Also, if the EVO Shift is the Desire Z (can't see it NOT being it), then it will be better than the EVO (second generation processor, bettery battery life as a result, faster, etc). I guess we will see, but yeah.

Pros & Cons Of Incredible S

Pros & Cons Of Incredible S
Why isn't there any thread concerning this is definitely one great phone to get ones hands on
So I thought why not start discussion about Incredible S as one great pro I believe it being no more a Verizon exclusive maybe it later becomes their flagship product who knows only time can tell
Ill list mine, assuming it is going to have TMo 3G.
Pros:
- 4" display
- It looks great
- Decent CPU and GPU
- 768M ram
- the fancy rotating button display
- basically an adult looking mt4g, which is good since that is a great phone technically
Cons:
- No qHD,still 800x480
- not 4.3" (i still dont know if I care, might be easier to one-hand a 4", no that's not what she said..)
- No TMo 4G? Cant confirm, but it appears to be the myTouch 4G in a classier package so the chipset should support it
- the fancy rotating button display if it uses battery of significance
- not dual core (though this may not matter too much right away)
I may get this depending on when and if they announce the pyramid dates, just so i can get a new gadget fix for a while...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
I'm considering this phone so I'll add a few to that list:
Pros:
Notification LED (yeah, this one really matters to me)
1.3 MP Front camera (not that I actually use them)
EDGE at up to 560 kbps download speed (usually phones have less than half that)
Cons:
Will probably have poor battery life (See complaints about HTC's myTouch 4G)
Only 1.1 GB Storage (I assume that is the free space)
S-LCD Screen (rather than Super AMOLED Plus)
No HDMI Out (or TV-Out of any kind that I can see)
No Gyroscope

From the HTC website:
HSPA/WCDMA:
* Europe/Asia: 900/AWS/2100 MHz
3G:
* Up to 14.4 Mbps download speed
* Up to 5.76 Mbps upload speed
This means that it should support 3G on T-Mobile USA at speeds that American networks claim to be 4G. I believe that this is the same as the myTouch 4G.

You do realize the Incredible S and Incredible 2 are essentially the same device right? Only difference is Verizon's version will have a CDMA/GSM chip for global use and probably a 16GB microSD card.
Could you be willing enough to provide a link to where you read about this 16gb Incredible 2 and also that only this much change happen when launched at Verizon

For me the bigger screen is better too BUT the problem with the DHD is that it comes with a 1230 mAh battery that fits inside the body so a significantly bigger battery can't be used.
Also the battery cover is so flimsy and useless that I wouldn't want to have to take it off and put it on again... ever. It really is some poor design.
If it weren't for the battery issue I would have bought the DHD last year. Now I'm looking at the Incredible S.

Infuse or SGSII?

So, I will have an upgrade coming up in june, and will be giving my dad my captivate in exchange for him buying me a new phone. I was just wondering what everybody's thoughts were on either the Infuse 4g or the SGSII?
That 4.5 inch screen on the infuse looks mighty fine, but I feel like I might want to wait for the SGSII. Any thoughts? I just don't know if the wait for the SGSII is worth it, although I can see myself holding out quite a while now that I'm running gingerbread goodness.
And please don't talk about other phones. I wouldn't buy an atrix if my life depended on it, and I would rather keep my captivate than go with the htc inspire. I just don't see myself ever going away from the SAMOLED displays that I have grown to love thanks to my cappy, and SAMOLED+ will only fuel my addiction.

Very true. The Infuse is a very appealing option, but I'm definitely putting the SGSII on top of my list right now. I just hope they drop a release date soon, so I know exactly how long I will be waiting. If the release date is too far out I might have to go with the infuse, then use my dad's upgrade when the SGSII eventually drops. FCC approval is teasing me like none other.

I think the only thing you get with the Infuse is a slightly larger screen - if that means something to you.
Infuse = 4.5", SGS2 = 4.3"
Both use SAMOLED2 so the quality should be equal.
I'm holding out for the SGS II also.

I've used droids from Motorola, Dell and now Samsung for at least a few months each and I've got to say I'm VERY impressed with Samsung's customizations to the Android OS. Things like the power controls in the notification bar, multiple lock screens, having an option to text someone right after hanging up and lots of other little modifications have made Samsung my new favorite for Android phones.
After spending as much time as I did trying to get the resource hogging Motoblur off my Backflip and simply ignoring the StageUI that Dell uses, it's refreshing to see modifications that are actually useful being added to Android.
Almost every custom rom image I've seen for the cappy includes touchwiz modifications, which is really saying something when hackers could easily remove it.
I've never used an HTC which is the only other brand I'm interested in trying, but I'm really impressed with Samsung's work, they have my loyalty.
sgs II is way better in my opinion...
the only thing about infuse is the 4.5 inch screen but 0.2 in doesnt really matter...

Yeah, I definitely want the SGSII, and price isn't really a determining factor. I bought my Cappy at full retail because apple screwed up my iphone 3g with their ****ty software which made it laggy as hell. Good phone for my mom, but I couldn't take it any longer. As a result, my dad will be taking my captivate and buying me whatever phone I want once I am able to upgrade in June, as I will be able to get the new contact price. I just hope AT&T doesn't drag their feet with getting the SGSII to market.

if it is between the infuse and inspire the infuse has some advantages but the price in hard to justify unless you use the hd playback. in which case the infuse has the only true 1080p hd playback that i know of. other than that the infuse makes video calls, inspire doesnt. the infuse is great but the specs are very close to the inspire and the size might be too much for some people, it is almost comical really.

very true but the infuse feels flimsy, there is no sense of quality, on the other hand i have opened up an evo and dont think much of htc's design principles either.
if it werent for the captivates less than stellar gps (not to say mine is bad, just not stellar) lower amount of ram and the shutdown issue that not every user is going to be able to fix i would say it was the most practical and best built android phone on att. but there are design flaws.
SGSII or something better. I wouldn't waste my time with the Infuse.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
Like I said before, price isn't an issue. Size isn't either, as I have large hands, and being a 6'2" 260 lb guy means my pockets aren't lacking in size either. My captivate still feels small. Also, I wish I could wait for the SGSII, but that isn't happening anymore. I'll probably end up going with the Infuse, because I love samoled displays, and though it's still single core, the 1.2 ghz in the Infuse beats the 1 ghz in the inspire. I suppose being able to side load apps from the get go is a big plus too.
I just hope the dev community shows the infuse even a fraction of the love they've shown the captivate.

Is the incredible s worth it?

Hi, im looking to upgrade my hd2 I've been thinking on the sensation but it is rather expensive and the only differences are processer speed, gpu and screen res. Now im wondering how well would this phone cope with future updates is it going to be left behind like the HTC desire. How good is the CPU /gpu and can it run intense graphic games well?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using xda premium
If you need processing power for ... Idk what you need more than a single core 1ghz for, go for it. If you game, go for it. If you do heavy heavy multitasking, go for it.
The screen on the inc s is better, though it has lower res.
I've had the o2x and atrix and haven't noticed any speed issues.
Dual core doesn't show until you need it to. If you don't need it, save the money and get this. It's still great. People live without phone upgrades for years, I think you'll be fine.
From previous experience, if your debating its probably a sign that dual core is too much power haha

Hmm so you've had a dual core phone and don't see any difference with the Inc s? Also im just wondering how future proof this device will be, will it still be super fast in say a years time?

I have a rooted dinc2 and it flies! The RAM is the important part and this has 768 mb..

Hmm this is really tempting me, has anyone had a 4.3 in phone and if so is there much noticeable difference in screen size? Also how large is the dev community for the device?

I am thinking about buying Htc Sensation. The cons is that angle views for this device are poor. Incredible S has really great display. You may check YouTube for IS x Sensation display comparison.

It is an awesome phone imo....
I got a great trade on this (x10 for this lol), and don't really feel the need for a dual core phone.
If you are getting this on contract I would say to go for the sgs2, but if you're just purchasing a new phone, for the price I think this is the best single core phone you can get right now.
The screen is amazing, the ui extremely smooth and responsive, good battery life, etc....
Also had a lg O2X. Like the HTC incredible S much more. A better phone in all aspects besides the build quality. Had an HTC desire hd also and the screen size is to big for me.
Dual core is just a nice to have and updates can always be replaced by custom roms.
So unless you definitely want the newest hardware I would say the incredible S is the best price quality out now..

It's a pretty old processor and gpu though it runs extremely well.
Who knows really, only time will tell.

I just bought my IS in the CPW sale for £269, I traded in my Desire which originally cost me £400 just over a year ago, so I actually parted with an extra £143. You loose a lot of money on 1 year old phones.
Sure, I would have liked either a HTC Sensation or perhaps a Samsung Galaxy S II, but owning the latest/fastest gadget is an expensive pastime.
I decided on the IS because it has bags of app space, extra ram, a nice sized screen and good build quality.
However, I'm actually on my 2nd IS within 3 days, my O2 phone signal appears to fluctuate quite badly and sometimes vanishes completely, not good! A phone exchange was my first option but that doesn't appear to have helped, so now I'm waiting for my new sim card to activate to see if that cures the problem.

ive never owned a 4.3" device but i would definitely say from playing with both in the shop that the extra bulk of a 4.3" phone is WAY more noticeable than the actual increase in screen size.
inc s is a great phone and a lot of nice dev work going on

It's absolute donkey ****! Never buy it! It is from the past, the community is dying quickly. The faulty power button and ****ty screen make it a rubbish phone. Buy an htc desire instead. No problem with power button, active community, new roms popping up. And most importantly it has a far better touch screen.
Hope that helped

whoa. seriously? hahaha jeeze i wasnt expecting that as a response but thanks alot i appreciate the honesty this could definitely change my descision
Uhm, do NOT buy the Nexus One. It's a **** phone that's mediocre at best. Buggy digitizer that fails to recognize to simultaneous touch inputs, a dodgy battery and a power button that dies too quickly.
It's roughly two years old and I would recommend buying a newer phone like the Galaxy Nexus.
You'll only be disappointed with the Nexus One, I promise you. Sure, there are lots of ROMs and many people are still active with this device, but that doesn't take away the fact that it was a failed phone and too rushed. HTC could have done way better. Way.
With the right ROM, kernel, performance tweaks, memory tweaks and battery tweaks it's decent enough if you really can't get your hands on anything newer and better.

o god i messed up. i meant to make this about the GALAXY nexus.... HAHAH whoops...
It's seems nice, but no sdcard and only 16gb for the GSM version held me back. The camera is also a let down, but I would let that slide if it had an msdcard slot.

The galaxy nexus is a launch device, to promote ICS. I had it, and i sold it. Buy the one x instead. Perfect phone, quad ccore, sense 4.0, HTC Built quality with metal.

LOL, he was talking about the galaxy nexus. I just get so annoyed with the touch screen bug, that i cannot recommend it to buy now. If you already have it, there is no need to upgrade fast. But if you want to buy it now, i would recommend the htc desire. similar specs, just without touch screen and power button bug.
@ race55 me homer saying doh lol i thought its nexus one cause where it was asked

Uhm, the Desire does, in fact, share the same annoying touchscreen bug as the Nexus One.

No, your wrong. It does not. My gf had one. Never experienced even something slightly like what she experienced on the Nexus One.

Maybe the experience is not quite the same, but it does have the buggy digitizer, much like the Nexus One. Maybe not in the same manner, but the digitizer behaves like that of the Nexus One.
For instance, if you use a multitouch tester on an HTC Desire, you'd see that when you place two fingers on the screen and make the two axes (plural of axis) they kind of "melt together". I don't know how to describe just that, but that's the inevitable truth.
In terms of dualtouch performance, it behaves exactly like the Nexus One. Google for yourself and see that I'm correct.
Galaxy Nexus is ****. It's not that powerful and the only good thing about it is that it flagshipped ICS. Try looking for an HTC One or wait for Samsung's GSIII. The quad core of the GN is not as fast as it should be and kills battery.

No, you are wrong. The htc desire has the exact same digitizer chip as the N1, the Synaptics ClearPad 2000
If your gf's phone doesn't show the typical bug, it's because apparently synaptics shipped an updated firmware in some of the later phones (there are some nexus ones that indeed don't show the bug as severe as it used to be, or went back to htc for repairs and returned with the touchscreen bug almost nonexistant)
