Sim card randomly removed - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everyday at one random point of the day it shows a message saying
"Sim card removed. Reboot the phone" I don't know why this is happening... I don't think it's a rom issue cause I had this in cognition and assonance(currently used)..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Most likely you just need a new sim card. Sometimes if they mishandled when taking them in or out it could damage the contacts.
I've seen a few cases where phones belonged to people who literally smoked and held the phone with the same hand at the same time had similar issues. There could be a great deal of tar on the card.
Other than that I would just check the internals and see if anything could be blocking a good.connection.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Can I buy a new similar card wihtout having to change my number? And I'm running the assonance rom and on the status bar it has h instead of 3g is that also caused by the sim card?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

The sim card just let's you connect.to the network. Your phone number would be the same as your previous one.
If you ate still under warranty, flash back to stock before you take it uptown to the store and have them put a new sim in as they may notice you have a custom rom and may make note.of it.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I don't have a warranty.. so is this gonna cost a lot of money??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Just go to the AT&T store, tell them you lost your phone and need a new sim card to use on a spare phone. Most of the time it's free.

Ok thanks I'll try it out as quick as possible cause my phone is like not working now..

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Did you flash a new rom on your phone with the SIM card installed in the phone?

Just tell them that you need your SIM replaced because this one is acting up. They shouldn't have a problem with that. I had mine replaced recently - there was no charge for it as well as there shouldn't be since they're a dime a dozen.

I didn't flash with my sim card in... it used to work fine and it suddenly started showing the message...

it seems that it was a problem with the rom... gonna switch to something else now...

Anybody have experience returning a rooted captivate to at&t?

I am sure this has been asked before, but searching ia causing a FC for me. So I ask of you all, has anyone tried returning their rooted captivate? I have one that is build 1007 and I keep hearing that the gps works on build 1012 so I want to switch mine for one of those. So has anyone tried this? Does it work? Is there any risk in trying, like are they going to send me a new one, find out mine is rooted and charge me 500 for the new one? Obviously I would flash stock and if possible without rooting again, recover my imei and product code.
I don't need to hear "oh they can tell or oh just flash stock and it should be fine " I want to hear from people that have tried this or actually know something about it.

3 phones so far.
Restore to stock using ODIN 1 click, and give it back. Make sure u format ur internal SD before u restore to stock to remove any traces left on sd card.
I am 10.07 build now, and GPS works great! The refurbs u get in 10.07 too are working fine. Looks like Samsung corrected them.
Returned a phone that was previously rooted. Removed root, using olcf app. Factory reset, reformat internal sd. Had no issues

Am I screwed?

I just got a galaxy tab Sprint off ebay and it's still activated. 3g works. I don't think its stolen because i got the box complete with all the contents. my concern is i wont be able to activate this thing when it eventually turns off.
anyone have a similar experience?
You can still use it as a wifi only tab.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I know, I would eventually like to add it to my Sprint plan.
Then what is the problem ? Here in europe you can use any phone you want with the plan you subscribe.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
that it may be linked to another account??
Why don't you just contact the guy that sold it to you?
Sorry but are you guys on drugs or something?
All you do is put another sim card in, Or am I mistaken and Sprint do not use sim cards or something?
It's a cdma version, so no sim card. But i think you can still use it with another plan. Try to contact sprint.

Q

I just got this phone running again it was bricked by me. When i put my sim card in it shows no service. My sim card is fine. Anyone know how to fix it? My apn settings are what they should be. Idk what to do
Sent from my GT-S5830i using xda app-developers app
Can you elaborate what exactly happened ?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
I unbricked it using odin. Now when i put my sim card in it wont get signal. It was reported stolen then we got it back messed up. She called and told cell one we got it back. So shouldnt they have removed the block on it?
Sent from my GT-S5830i using xda app-developers app
I think the problem is with the sim & not with the phone. I think they haven't processed your request properly, for which they might want you to provide some additional proof to confirm your identity. You might wanna recontact them. And have you tried this sim on other phones & other sims on this phone ? If yes, what was the consequence ?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
well i must admit that this thread has very informative 'title' (not o mention subject)
Yes I use it on my regular ace 5830. Works fine and everything. The stock rom I flashed was an at&t firmware. Then I flashed ace-i-sure to see if it made a difference. Nope.
Sent from my TB782B using xda premium
So let me just recap on the information you have provided so far...
1. You bricked the phone yourself
2. You then reported the phone as having been stolen
3. You managed to unbrick the phone using Odin
4. You reported to your network provider that you now have the phone back
5. Now the phone still has no network signal
Sounds like you might have an issue with the Karma chip
But seriously, under Settings / About Phone / Baseband... what does it say there?
I believe xxla2
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Yea just checked its s5830ixxla2 I flashed ace I sure to see if it might fix the problem. It doesnt
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
I think you did a big mistake reporting it as stolen. I ain't able to find a hint of what could open the doors to link the exact problem in the software with any rom. But by far, it seems to me that they might have disabled the phone from connecting to a network as you reported it to be stolen or it might happen to be a hardware issue. In any case, you might wanna go to the service centre.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
I'm thinking of just calling them to see if it's been blocked if so they should remove it as we have it working again. we've already bought a replacement.

Good. Just contact them !

Cappy on T-Mobile problems.

So my cappy is running on T-Mobile. Its unlocked and on hellybean 4.2.2 . my phone works and SMS/MMS work. Data is not working however. I have to use WiFi. So here goes. I broke my note2 and decided until i get the $175 for insurance to replace it I'd use my cappy. So i pull the sim from the note2 and notice oh thats a micro sim. The Cappy takes the regular
Sim card.
I take my old sim card from straight talk and with a xacto knife and cut out a hole the shape of the micro sim. This it of course after about 20 minutes of studying the edges of each to make sure they are all lined up properly. Put the micro in the hole and slap a piece of tape on the back and insert it. Turn on the phone voila it reads T-Mobile.
The two problems I seem to be having are occasionally I get a notice that the network is unavailable and it'll last a few minutes then go away on its own then its good until next time. Usually 2 or 3 times a day. The other is not data connection. Anyone have any ideas?
OK so data works its just edge so really slow.

Do an xda search or a google search on APNs. Sounds like your missing one for data.

Compare the Captivate's frequency capabilities to that of T-mobile network frequencies and u will understand that Edge is what ur gonna get...unless u happen to be in an area that t-mobile has reworked there edge freq. to be 3g. --- but it sounds like u r not.

Just wondering if it was the APN that was already there or not. Itsbthebepc.tmobile.com one. My note ran on fast.tmoile.com wondering if trying different apns would give different results. I mean .19mbps download is just wow.

Yep understand. Worth a try with the different apns.

I also have a captivate on T-Mobile. My APN settings are:
Epc.t-mobile.com
MMSC: mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: default,supl,mms
Every other setting is default or blank.
Your second option would be to flash a new modem in hopes that gives u better signal or 3G. I believe CM10 comes with an I9000 modem that is not the best... Try flashing kk4, its the newest and most common modem.
Hope that helps

I tried a different APN and it was worse. Gonna talk to the developer and see what modems I can use with this ROM. I really like it and do not wish to switch.

I believe there is also but the only thing that the thread doesn't explain is how to flash radios and its something I've never been able to find clear instructions on and when asked I always get referred back to that sticky on.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
I know what you mean. I have intermittent luck with radios. There are two ways to get a radio flashed. One is using Odin and the other is with CWM just like installing a ROM. So my advice is to pick a radio and first try it with CWM installing from zip. If that doesn't work use Odin. Take the .bin file and install it the same way you would a kernel but under the modem field.
If you reboot and have no signal you either did it wrong or that modem is incompatible, so just find a different one, rinse and repeat.
Hope that helps
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I found a post in the modems sticky about midway through that explained the same. First modem I flashed was a major improvement. I'm now getting 2.36mbps download speeds vs 0.16mbps before the new modem. Its ugjk4 for cm7/ICS. Gonna check the sound quality and if its good I'm gonna leave it.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
Must've just been a bad radio for my area and phone to use with T-Mobile. I now get a 3g signal. Best speed so far was 4.76mbps. Blazing fast compared to what it was. Xda never ceases to amaze me with its members support and knowledge.

[Q] No 4G LTE after SIM error

Hey guys,
I work at Sprint and my technicians and myself cannot figure this out. So I thought I would reach out to you guys!
I had 4G flawlessly on my phone for the first few weeks I had it. One day I got a SIM error that read something like this, "No SIM Card: 4G LTE will not work as SIM/UICC is reinserted". I popped out the little SIM card, wiped it off, and the phone read it and the error went away. Since then I have not had a single connection to 4G LTE.
All of our demo phones are on 4G lte as well as my girlfriends phone at home. I am constantly in 3G or 1X. Any advice would be great
Things I have already tried....
1. Updated profile/prl
2. Reprovisioned phone using ##72786#
3. Toggled settings using *#*#4636#*#*
4. Wiped and installed a new ROM
5. Played around with SIM card slot and rebooting phone
I am going to try a new UICC sim if we have one around the store...if that doesn't work im out of ideas!
I have no suggestions, but I have had the same exact problem the past couple of weeks. I got the error, but I didn't even pop the SIM card out. I just put the phone in airplane mode like I usually did when I got the error. When I took it out of airplane mode, my 4g was gone and it has not come back. I have checked all settings and I can't come up with anything. I also RUU'd back to stock just to make sure. Still no sign of 4g.
Let me know if replacing your sim does the trick, because this has been driving me crazy.
By the way, I know it is the phone and not just sprint messing with the towers or something, because my wife's evo 4g lte is on 4g all the time.
Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
I read somewhere that your SIM ID and your UICC ID have to match, don't know if it's true, but go to settings - about - phone identity to check it out

The phone is rooted. I don't think there are any other radios out for this device yet though. Thanks for your reply though
I'm a Sprint Tech and do not have an answer currently for you guys as I have been receiving this error as well and only just found this thread. Will try to research tomorrow and see if I can find an answer. I only received this message once as of yesterday and it went away seconds later. Tonight it reappeared and is sticking. Under app info it shows this is the Phone app that is sending out this notification. There is a possibility if you force close the app and then disable notifications for it that this error may go away; however, I'm not sure what other notifications we would consequently loose. Current corporate PRL is 55015 and I am running Viper 1.0.3 with stock kernel. I am wondering if this has to do with refreshing your PRL because I did not notice it until I requested it from Updates two days ago even though the actual PRL version number did not change.

yea that sh!t didnt work at all. this seems really stupid to me that our phone is having this issue what could be causing this why would the sim card mess it up?
Ok so the consensus is, this seems really stupid too but its the only thing I can figure, the SIM is loose. If you eject your HTC One Micro Sim and place a small piece of scotch tape on the reverse side of the connector, this gives the card just enough volume, when reinserted to consistently maintain contact with the reader as the SIM tray is simply too big and is allowing the phone to believe there is actually no SIM card inserted when the connection is detected as broken. Suppose this also explains the inconsistencies in various user experiences since we all have different handling habits. Any one else want to wager to guess why this problem is so intermittent?

my friend who works at bb hooked me up with another sim. im taking it to sprint tomorrow and see if they can do anything. my friend said he could swap for a new htc one as well. i would have to pay 30 bones though.
