Use a file manager like Root explorer. It is a paid app but really great. There are some free ones as well like Astro but I personally don't like how the UI looks.

You can download them to your SD card and install with Astro (free). Browse your SD card with Astro, click on the file and it asks you to either browse or install.

Thanks I meant if you can download the file not install them. I assume that its just not possible and you have to use your computer then.

Does anyone have any input on this? When I browse the forums on my phone and click on an apk, I get an "Unknown - Cannot download. The content is not supported on the phone" message.
Are there any possibilities installing an apk using only the phone?

Download Astro File Manager. Open it up and then use the menu button and go to Preferences. At the bottom of the list you'll see "Enable Browser Downloads". Tick that box and now you can download files in your phone's browser.
Don't uninstall astro, or you won't be able to dl anymore.

I just used Dropbox. Files go in on my PC, and are available on my phone with the Dropbox app.
DB offers 2GB storage for free and, so far, it's worked from all my PC's and works well with my phone. I just open the .apk and install.

umm... same way you download on a computer...
google.com search > "" Some Dumb app pro v9.9 .apk download ""
download. install. duh
use google to rip off google...

Thanks. I had tried with explorer, which is the free version of root explorer, but it didn't work. I'll try astro.

There's an app on the market called "Download All Files ". It has allowed me to download several different files that I was not able to before. Downloaded files get put into a folder called "download" on the sd card. Use your file explorer, you can install .apks from there.

For those wondering why I want Opera Mini is becoz I really like Opera mini in a hurry.
You have to make sure to check the box that says allow outside downloads. But the opera mini wont work its for the old beta emulator and will not load on thre G1.
install???
How exactly do we install third party off the market apps??? I have apk extensions. now what???
Credits go to: Blogsdna.com
I have seen on many users asking on forum what is .apk file ? How to install .apk app on G1 phone ? How to install non market apk apps on android ? etc. A apk file is “android package file” with the extension ‘.apk’ use to install any application on Google Android powered mobile phone. So incase you need to install any application on your android phone you need to have file with .apk format.
Installing any application on google android is pretty easy but installing non market apps on android phone is little tricky one. Well don’t worry here is guide for installing .apk apps on android phones.
How to Install .Apk Apps on Google Android G1 Phone
1. Install and open the Apps Installer application from the Android Market.
2. This opens a view showing *.apk application names in the sdcard root directory.(note, if no AppNames are listed you have no .apk files in the root directory of the SDCard)
3. Touch the app name to initiate installation of the app.
4. The app is now installed
How to Non-Market .Apk Application on Google Android G1 Phone
1. Download and install Google Android SDK.
2. Now type adb in a command shell will display all the options, adb.exe is SDK tool used to install applications and interface with the device.
3. Now Connect Your G1 Phone to your computer using USB cable. You need to install Drivers for this. Download Android USB drivers from here. This driver is required for adb to interface with an android G1 phone using USB cable.
4. Go to Settings/SD card & phone storage and Unmount/eject SD Card. You can enable it again later after you installed your third-party application.
5. Go to Settings/Application settings and enable Unknown sources.
6. Download the Application installer .apk file to a local folder on your computer, Now type below command at command shell to install app.
adb install <Full Path to apk file><apk file name>
The above guide is only application for windows XP users and Windows Vista users wont be able to use it, since android sdk for windows vista is not available.

I have Opera mini 4.2 apk in my files if you need it.

There's no such menu. i.e. "disable Use for USB storage" at "Settings/SD card & phone storage" in T-mobile G1.
To enable ADB, you'll need to turn on "USB debugging" in Settings - Application settings - Development.
Opera mini 4.2 beta is on marketplace now anyway.
actually, there is another way. download the app from the internet (either using Android or PC) and move it to the SD card. then download any file browser app (such as IO File Manager) from Android market. open file browser app and locate the downloaded app from the internet and open it. that's it...
Can you add Twidroid to the mix

Thanks!

FYI: Opera is also on SlideME Marketplace. You can install directly from within SAM. It's under "Communications" category.
If you don't have SAM, just visit http://SlideME.org/sam2 from your G1 and download SAM.
help... please? lol
okay i've read through a lot of threads the past couple hours and i just can't figure this out. i can't install 3rd party apps using apps installer or a file manager, but i can install perfectly fine from the market. it tells me that i need to free up some space in order to do so. i have the box checked and such for installing 3rd party apps in settings, and i'm running JF1.42 RC33... what the heck could the problem [email protected]
might be a dumb question, but do you have enough space(mine starts complaining @ less than 5mb left)? menu-settings-storage-internal space.
try adb install, if previous post doesn't help
aye, i'm well above 5MB even without the /data/data move and the /app move, i believe i'm somewhere around 25mb if i keep everything on my phone. so you think the ADB install will fix this? i will have to try it when i get off of work, i don't think the DoD will take kindly to me using their computers for it lol. what thread is that listed under?
Very Simple to install downloaded apk apps!!!
1. Go into menu/settings/applications and check the box allow install of non-market applications.
2. Then download the app: ApkInstaller
Once you do this, you download the apk file from the internet. Save it somewhere on your memory card. Open ApkInstaller and search for the file on your memory card and install.
It's just that simple. I do it all of the time.
Have fun!
Install .apk
Through Terminal Emulator without adb or another install application (AppsInstaller):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3425442#post3425442
All these methods seem pretty confusing... All I do is just click allow third party apps and then click the .apk file in oi file manager.
If you realize when this thread was created, there was no file manager

Apps Installer
1) Install Apps Installer (from Market)
2) On your computer, download the apk of the application you want to install
3) Connect your phone to the PC and mount the SDCard
4) Put the .apk at the root of SDCard
5) Run Apps Installer from your telephone
install "ES File Explorer" from market (free)
search for your package and click it.
"ES File Explorer" chooses software is needed for application
@be0ne
@restecool
There must be some faulty information since I wasn't able to find both...
EDIT:
ok. it must be searched as "appsinstaller".
this is cool!
I'm using the "ES File Explorer"
Now...I need a .apk file to test that out

Prevent Mobile View Browser - Non-Hero

I could not find any information about this in the forums anywhere.
I apologize if it has already been discussed.
My favorite feature in Hero is the browser's ability to prevent websites from showing the mobile view.
I know many sites have a choice for this, but some of them don't.
Has anyone come up with a way to get the stock cupcake browser to fool websites into thinking it is not a mobile browser? Is it even possible?
get loccys browser, it allows you to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551119&highlight=loccy and much more!
if you cant use adb then just use a file browser such as oi file manager to install, works great!
Thank you for the help.
I have been looking for this forever.
Time to reflash.

It's way easier to install using a file manager than ADB.
Although u can use a fike manager to install apks u cant install system apps like the browser with them. Get SUFBS from the market or get the adb file manager for ur pc. I use the adb manager no need for commands just a few clicks and i can remove and push things at will!
Thanks everyone.
I've already flashed CM 4.0.4 and installed the browser using ADB.
Browser is awesome.
I had this problem to when using cupcake. If you don't have root or want to dal with flashing you can always use a proxy servr also. I used to use youhide.com cuz everytim I went to the ufc website I got the lame mobile site
All I did to install it was download it through my phone browser. Then tap the file in the download manager and installed in seconds.

Again... YES you can. However, it seems only Linda File Manager has the functionality...other file manager's don't. I fooled around with it again today...this time totally removing all browser related files from /system/app, /system/sd/app, and /data/data. I then rebooted and reinstalled Loccy's browser using Linda FM.

I haven't tried downloading it with browser... didn't even think to try it that way. So there are now two ways of doing it on the phone without using terminal or ADB.
I used OI file browser, it worked fine installing the browser!
A lot of system apks can be installed right through linda with no need to push through adb
I always find it easier to use the terminal:
cp /sdcard/blahblah.xxx /system/blah/blah

where to download cool apps/games?

using my pc, tnx!
Some apps are available at slideme.org if you can't access the Market from your device. Better to just use MarketEnabler, as the Market is currently the main repository for Android apps.

If you just put the .apk file onto your sdcard, then you will need to install some kind of file manager to open the .apk file. If you download the .apk from a website then you can open it from the browser's download list. You can also install .apk files by connecting the phone to a computer and using adb.

you can install your APK files (like the Play Store) by going to the Amazon Market first and downloading a File Explorer App such as ES File Explorer or any type of File Manager app, locating the APK through that program, and then clicking on it to install
