[Q] Purchasing Root Explorer - Nook Color General

Hey XDA,
First let me start off by saying what a stellar resource this community is and that I am very lucky to have stumbled upon it before i purchased my NC. Mind you the NC is my first Android device so this feels like SUCH a dumb question to ask but I am trying o buy Root Explorer and when i go to the (old) market, click buy - it has me log into my Google account. I put in my Google account information (the same that i registered the device with) then i have the option of syncing the calendar or email and it takes me back tot he "BUY" screen in the Marketplace.
I feel like a dumbsh*t for asking this here but what am I doing wrong? For me to remove the cell service from the NC, update the Softkeys GUI and many other things Root Explorer seems a great way to go but my nubcicle self seems stuck at a very embarrassing impasse. Thank you again or all the great advice I have been lucky enough to absorb through my introduction into the Droid world and for any help you can give!
Regards,
Johnathan

[Q] Security

New to android and captivate, so excuse me if I'm missing something..but it seems that with one's google account being tied into all the functions, including buying in the market with the credit card on file with google..there has to be a setting to not allow the device to be used with a different sim..or some kind of security that will lock down your google account if the phone is stolen? Is something built in..or is there an app out there that people generally use for peace of mind?
EDIT: All of the recent Nokia phones I've had has a setting to not allow a different sim to be used

Very interesting. I too would like to know the answer. This is one of the many reasons why I NEVER use:
A) Mobile Banking
B) Purchases of any kind that includes Plastic
C) Setup any accounts that wire account info
Call me paranoid, but hey, it will save you a ton of headache on that unfortunate "if" day. Please keep us posted.
So does anybody have an answer...or at least some kind of marketplace app that is used for security?
So is nobody interested in security? Or is there just no simple solution..one thing that I miss on my Nokia N97 is the remote lock..send a text of a secret word, and poof the device is locked...done
I think people are interested to some degree but no widely known easy method. And just an fyi, rooting your phone and gaining superuser privileges - as many of us have done - creates a big security hole for trogin malware attack, so if you have rooted your phone take care and know what your installing and try to pay attention to anything using super user privileges.

[Q] Comixology App

Hi guys! Been trying to purchase comics using the Comixology app... problem is... it keeps popup up an error stating "Sorry, the transaction failed. The Paypal billing service may not be available at this time. Could you please send us a not to let us know?"
I send the comixology guys a note and they already gave me the same advise 3x... that I reboot, force stop, etc. the app... tried and failed. I even went to the point of re-downloading the entire app.
I have no problem downloading "free" comics... but can't purchase them on my gtab... I tried the app on my wife's android phone (I used my comixology account on her phone) and I did not encounter the problem that keeps displaying on my gtab. Anyhow, maybe someone had some experience on this problem? A solution? Through gtab?
I didn't even know there was an Android version out there! (see what happens when you go offline for a day).
Did you get this from the market?
I've used Comixology for a little over a week now. Very nice app. I downloaded the app from the market.

I just installed it. I am a big comic reader, so I would like to get this working, as well. Delving deeper, now....
EDIT: What UI are you running, just curious. Stock? TnT Lite? VEGAn? Other?
EDIT2: My guess right now is that PayPal is supposed to pop-up, and I'm assuming that it's using the canned web browser. Does that sound right? If so, it could be the TnT proprietary browser causing issues. I might be able to prove that with using a different mod, such as the VEGAn.
EDIT3: Also curious -- do you have the PayPal app on the phone? I can't seem to find it in the Market on my GTab. I'm basically stopping at this point anyway, as I wouldn't want to store my PayPal password on my GTab anyway, as it's just not secure imo. Adding my Facebook or Pandora ID is one thing, but anything financial is where I draw the line.
Maybe I can purchase on my PC, then this app with sync? That would work (at least for me).
Roebeet,
Sorry I can't help. I've been only reading free comics up-to-now.
Their desktop PC store doesn't accept PayPal? What's up with that?
Holding off, for now. Seems like they need to still work some things out.

Answer 1: I'm using VEGAn... with Launcher Pro.
Answer 2: Yes... there should be a screen that will allow you to log-in to your Paypal account... saw this on my wife's android phone. Her phone was not rooted by the way... and using all the default software.
Answer 3: Yes I have the Paypal app... but decided to remove it. Regardless, its not working on both cases.
I believe the problem is with the ROM? No problem downloading and viewing free comics... not sure what will happen if I downloaded using my wife's phone (my account) then load up my app again via my gtab. It should display all my purchased comics (If one will believe the marketing hehe).
FYI, I also got an email back from comiXology:
"BTW, you can buy comics on https://comics.comixology.com and then download them to the app. You'll need to restart the app and your purchases will appear in My Comics."
I figured this was the case - the only issue I see if that PayPal is not a payment option. This whole setup seems a bit messy, so I think I'll wait until it's a little more stable. Anything that asks for my credit card info needs to be stable and secure, not "beta".
Thanks roebeet. Hmm, maybe this will open up some things... maybe for the devs... I used my wife's android phone... I was able to purchase the comics that I wanted and I force stopped the app in my gtab and launched it again. I was now able to download the purchased comic on my gtab... unfortunately, I still can't purchase anything on the comixology app on my gtab and will have to jump to my wife's cell just to buy it then download it unto my gtab. I believe it to be an issue with the ROM... anyone able to purchase anything on another ROM?

I have actually purchased quite a few things on my gtablet. I bought something from TigerDirect with a credit card, I bought a stand from ebay using paypal, and I have bought about 6 apps from the market specifically for my gtablet since the apps are better with the bigger screen. When I purchased with Paypal I was using Xscope as the browser.
I mean... has anyone able to purchase comics on this app... coz so far haven't been able too... at least on gtab running VEGAn.
Oh sorry

No problem The Comixology dev team already emailed me regarding the bug... and I informed them that it might be because I'm using a rooted device... hopefully, they can fix the problem that would allow paypal purchase (even on rooted devices). ^^
downloaded comics keep needing to be re-downloaded
I've been using the Comixology app for a few weeks and overall I have been very happy with it. However, today I began to experience a weird issue with comics I have purchased (on their website) which are then ready to download when I open the Android app. I click the Download Now button and it shows the download progress (10%, 15%, etc...) until it is completely downloaded and the botton changes to Read Now. I click on it to open the comic and it comes up fine. I close the app and go back into it and then it shows the comic needs to be downloaded again (it says Download rather than Read). It has happened several times today. It is getting frustrating. Has anyone else seen this behavior?
Update: By default, the Comixology app is set to use 500MB of storage. The comics stopped disappearing once I increased the storage limit.

[Q] How do I change the Market account that is used for buying apps?

I have rooted a few NC's for friends and family, but as part of the process I end up buying a few apps to help with the job. The gmail account is theirs, but I use my own credit card. Now, I want to remove my credit card information and let them setup their own, but I can't find anywhere to do this. I see that they can ADD a new credit card to use, but I don't see that they can remove one. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!!

[Q] Help for an App Developer

Hello XDA'rs,
I work for the developer Loud Crow Interactive Inc. and we build book apps for kids.
We've recently launched into the Android Market and are having trouble with our app being installed on rooted nook colors. The issues appear to be on the licensing side.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Also, what does a rooted nook register as (device) on the Android Market place,
Thanks in advance,
Tom
What's the error, logcat ?, what's the app?
dude u gotta give some info if need a solution.
There could be a million things that could cause problems like that.

We are all waiting for an answer. I have an outstanding request in with Google that I have had to update several times as they seem to be dancing around the question. When and if I hear I will post a response.
The App is "The Going to Bed Book" or "PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit" - Our users are getting a "Invalid License" error. We're going to root one of our nooks soon to do some testing, but until then we were thinking we might be able to get something from the forums. Both users who reported the issue were running CM7, which I also run on my HTC IS, and runs our apps fine. Thus we're thinking it could have something to do with the device ID running against the licenses?
As we set up restrictions by device, We were curious what a rooted NC running CM7 would show as in terms of a device on the Android Market place?
Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the patience. I'm not the actual Android developer on the team. He's out of the office for the week,
Cheers,
Tom
I think he means he is having trouble getting the application to install from the market in general. I looked up the applications and the NC was not a supported device.
I don't want to pay the money to download it to my phone and sideload it (I'm at work anyways). I don't know much about applications and how devices are determined to be compatible other than maybe their permissions. However, these applications (there are two on the market), don't require anything other than SD access.

That might be part of some of this. I was not aware developers were setting restrictions by device. Is this new?
model name -NookColor
product name -encore
And there is really no way to find out the problem, without looking at the logcat.

No, this feature is available to every developer since a long time. but there are 600 or so devices so not a lot of people bother with it.

Actually, questions to the market run against your account and the email info and log the following device details:
> IIILanguage: en
> IssueType: market_website
> Language: en
> android_app_name: Facebook
> android_os: gingerbread
> android_os_other:
> device_manufacturer: other
> device_manufacturer_other: Barnes & Noble
> hidden_country: US
> website_issue_select: grayed_device
device_manufacturer= bn
If u want to know more take a look at build.prop, people have uploaded it in netflix thread, which reminds me that a lot of users usually change their device and fake it to run different apps.

Those were direct quotes from what Google's filters picked up when I sent an email while logged in to the market.
Thanks guys, this will be a good start. If and when we resolve the issue I'll be sure to post an update with the details. I really wish Android Market supported promo codes; we'd love to be able to throw out some free copies for you guys to have a look at and test for these one off issues.
Thanks Again!
I assume if you sideload the .apk it will install fine?
Just want to contribute that I have the Going to Bed Book installed and running fine on my Nook. I am still running CM7 7.1RC, and have my build.prop spoofed for Netflix (no longer required, but I never changed it back and haven't flashed a new CM7 in a while). The only change I made in build.prop was setting the manufacturer to HTC.
The book runs great and is my son's new favorite app.
You may have an issue using get.DeviceID()... have one of your users use my IMEI generator and see if it fixes their problem. They can also spoof Manufacture, Device and Model with the newest version.
IMEI Generator Thread.
I have it on my CM7 (7.0.3 to lazy to update, running off sd no changes to build.prop) Nook and it works fine. My daughter loves it.
Some of the pages are kind of hard to register a turn, and it always starts upsidedown then flips itself over. But both of those things are the same on my incredible 2 as well.

[Q] How to remove gmail acct in CM7??

I have searched and read questions from other people looking for the answer, but can't find a solution. I am passing on my Nook Color to a friend, and want to delete the gmail account I used to set it up when I got it. I can't get rid of it without restoring it to default, which I hate to do and get rid of a lot of good apps.
I have added a new gmail account, thinking that would satisfy the android beast, but I still can't remove the original one. I have cleared all data in all apps (there is no "gmail" or "google apps" listed in my apps, like some people say to look for).
Someone suggested renaming or removing the accounts.db file, but then someone else responded saying that had messed them up.
Any other solutions or suggestions. Thanks very much for any help.
I'd like to know if this is possible too. I noticed on my TouchNootered Nook Touch that there is an app called DeviceRegistrator or something like that and it lets you change the reg info I think without wiping the device (correct me if I'm wrong please). Can this be used with the NC?

If you intent to sell your NC, then I suggest you reflash, clean install your NC and not logging into any account.
However, if you just want to lend your NC to friends just for a day or two, and will eventually get it back, I would suggest you just change your gmail account password in your PC, next time you're on the NC, it will flag and indicate that cannot sync with your gmail account ('cuz the password has changed)
That's a quick way to go.

I'm selling it, but wanted to leave on some apps, and also don't want to have to reflash (easy for you, but hard for me). So far I have changed the password, and the new owner can set up their own gmail acct, but my old acct will stay there I guess. I don't like it, but probably it's ok. Do you see any problems with that?
I'm considering getting root explorer and doing something with the accounts.db file after all, but don't want to make things worse.
You're selling it and don't want to reflash and want to keep all apps for your friends, I would say go with the "accounts.db" delete method.
Solved!
Thanks for the advice. When I finally got the market working, I bought Root Explorer (in my frenzy I accidentally first bought Root Tools, maybe come in handy down the road), which was the perfect solution. According to directions I read in posts, I deleted the accounts.db file (first renamed it just in case and when things worked, deleted it), rebooted, and the original gmail account was gone!
Pretty simple after the fact, but hard getting there. Hope this helps someone else.
