[Q] Launcher Pro Expiring - Captivate Themes and Apps

Looking for some guidance here, my wifes Captivate is running Launcher Pro (free version), and about a week ago, she received this message as one of those little popup messages, saying "This version of launcher pro is about to expire, please go to launcherpro.com to update"....
I checked the Market for an update, and according to it, there was no update. We saw this message about every other day, until this morning, she goes to use her phone, and basically launcher pro has completely crashed out, and keeps taking her to the web browser trying to open to the launcher pro website.
She has no way to get to her home screen, or any other part of the phone. All the physical buttons on the bottom redirect her to the browser trying to load launcherpro.com, I assume to get this "Update".
I've never heard of this, I run launcher pro too, which no problems. Any thoughts? How can I back her out of using launcher pro as her home app, with out being able to access the main android setting panel?
Can this be done from recovery mode?

Is her phone rooted?
Edit: And is USB debugging enabled?

Yes, it is rooted. I think her most recent launcher pro update (from market) failed to download, or install correctly, and now it's corrupt.
She only has access to the web browser. She can access other websites, but launcherpro.com will not load.
I had her remove battery, sim card, and then reboot phone, no dice.
Edit: I think USB debugging is enabled, but I'm not sure.... I'm at work, she's at home....I'm basically trying to get my plan together, so when I get home tonight, I can tackle this.

I also had her type in the direct URL for the most recent launcherpro update (apk file) which she was able to download, but of course she can't install it....

If she can sideload apps, You might be able to use the browser to download a different launcher (touchwiz, adw ..etc) then uninstall launcherpro and reinstall if you wanted... just use the browser to sign in to xda and download whichever u wanted....if browser wont let you download an apk then you could use adb, download your launcher then adb push it to /system/app/ and reboot (you might have to adb shell to mount /system RW) once it boots u might have to hit the home key for it to pop up and ask what launcher to use..

I got the same message like 2 days back. I went to market and updated my version. It didn't give that message again.

ya, that was the first thing I did, but according to the market, her version was up to date, or at least there were no updates for her to install....
I figured there would be a way for me to sideload something, but I've never done anything like that....rooting via an update.zip file, was easy....
Edit: the other thought I had was, if she gets a market app update notification in the notifications bar, we would probably be able to get to the market that way, and uninstall launcher pro, or install another home app (adw). So I'm hoping an update gets pushed today.

Try ADW. This is one home replacement simple and more or less on lines of launcher pro, well, atleast personally by me.

She needs to get home launcher or something so that she can switch her launcher.
I still use Touchwiz mainly, but I have Launcher Pro Plus, ADW, Live Home, and Netlife Home on my phone as well.

Thanks, the problem of course is that we cannot access any part of the phone except the browser...so once I can figure out how to get to the market, or into the android settings, I will be able to disable LauncherPro.
If anyone has a suggestion of how to accomplish that, it will be most appreciated.

She can't even access the market? If she can get an app called home switcher. That would let her choose which launcher to use. If not you would have to either email the creator or reset the phone if everything she touches makes the phone go to pp website. I don't know how anything she does makes it go to their website to upgrade.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.

If debugging is activated you could try to adb push a new launcher apk to /data/app/

Go to appbrain.com and you should be able to hook into the Market from there.

You can also use the Android Sideload Wonder Machine from Androidcentral to sideload another launcher or HomeSwitcher. Link
Just connect your phone with USB debugging on, but not connected as a usb mass storage device, select the apk, and click install.

If you are comfortable with ADB then follow the instructions in the link below.

1. Download any launcher, say adw onto ur computer.
2. Use adb commands to push it to /system/app
3. Press the home button -- this will prompt u to pick one home app, pick the new one, and presto... u have full access to ur phone

MikeyMike has the easiest solution. If on the phone, you can only access the browser. Go to www.appbrain.com, and download another launcher from there(Zeam, ADW,Launcher2) install it and reboot, you should be able to then select which browser to use.

download the .apk from your computer and install using droidexplorer...problem solved

I had the same thing happen to me. The launcherpro website is also down. This seems well thought out. How do you make a program liked by almost everyone and turn it into something I'm swearing at for the last three hours because I need to use my phone as a #(*@^@% phone.
I don't have mine rooted. Stupid thing is I was planning to do it this weekend.
Any of the ideas above work for a non-rooted phone? Can I still sideload something else somehow?
Thanks.

Launcher Pro has expired....

okay, so apparently my launcher pro beta has expired on my speedy eclair ROM. How the heck do I upgrade or update or install a newer version? I've tried downloading the new version from the Market, but it fails to install.. I've downloaded it from the website and tried to use an .apk installer to install and it again fails.
How do I get it to work? it's annoying as heck.
Use Blaokmarket.com or droidappz.org. I suggest signing up for both, but using DroidAppz.org for now while they confirm your addition to BlapkMarket (takes about 1-3 days for them to confirm you.) And when you're in BlapkMarket, you can then download apps and update them (just like the Market.)
Or use ADW.Launcher... much better!
please i need help.. launcher pro has expired and i have no internet availiable. the browser keeps popping up and i can't do anything. my debugging is off so i can't uinstall it from sdk. i don't want to make a factory reset cause of that stupid programm. the only thing i need is a way to open the settings and make android home default instead of launcherpro but how can i do this when the only thing i see is the browser and the task manager?
Ok why was a trial version used? Is there a way round this issue or do we have to uninstall and start from scratch??? Maybe I should have expected it
Hi,
have a look into launcher Pro forum.
But no solution for now except :
- Try to crash LauncherPro
- Get an internet connexion and upgrade LP using the displayed web page
- use a task killer if one exist and is running
- try to get into android settings ...
I had a data connection and manage to get rid of this probleme.
I really don't understand why an "official" release can expire and most of all I don't understand how they dare to block the launcher !! That's the main peice of the phone.
They block all the phones with their stupidity.
uninstalling
So I knew Launcher Pro was about to expire but this morning when I went to use my phone and the default launcher was disabled and all I was "allowed" to do was go to the Launcher Pro website and update I decided this launcher if not for me. Don't block me! Uninstalling now.
Using web page (as forced), do the download, but when you try to open the apk in the browser you get this popup:
Parse error: There is a problem parsing the package.
Another workaround post by Christmoo on LP forum :
He used the opened browser and :
"Went to the Droid-life.com website and then the Apps link and chose an application that linked to the Market to install. This brought up the Android Market and I could then search for Launcher Pro and update - problem solved."

Can you please tell me specifically what apps link go directly to the Android market. I am getting stuck finding one and actually launching the market place. Stuck in a viscous circle. Cant launch anything...but the launcher pro website
Hello there,
This happened to me a few hours ago. I've been frantically searching all over the net for acess to the Android Market. Just google search ADW.Launcher and go to the website JBthemes. I am unable to post links since I'm a "newbie".
It downloades the ADW.Launcher......but I personally think its better than the Launcher Pro.....
You will see a barcode......Press on it ( This is all done ON the phone ) and it will direct you to the Android Market......and the Installation page for the ADW.Launcher!
Good Luck

Thanks for responding Dan, unfortunatly that didnt work for me. I could navigate to the ADW page but it wouldnt let me install the app. It said I already have to many screens open???? Weird. I tried researching and installing for a few hours....
I finally gave up and rebuilt with another build. (Darkstone, Desire with Froyo Sence..just released Sept 29th, 2010) I was having a lot of problems with Cyanomod anyway. Lots of Screen of Death's....even after I tried a few different ROM's and Radio's. So far I like the Darkstone build a lot better, seems more stable. Some of the Sence features are actually very nice, compared to straight Froyo.
Anyway, I hope you solution works for others. It was simply too vexing for me.
launcher pro hijack your phone? go to this site to start android market: bubiloop.com/download/org.adw.launcher
for those who has no internet and can't do anything.
if you long press home button you can access task manager
ther press search and type settings
system settings will apear.
go to manage applications and clear data or uninstall launcher pro
then when hiting home button you will be prompted to choose home or launcher pro
choose default home and everything is ok.
I have the same problem as above.
I am very angry about launcherpro update management. I can't get my phone up and running because i don't have any connection on my Hero.
Launcherpro is s**t. I'm getting rid of it.
Anyone know commands to DISABLE it as home in SDK through debugg?
Pressed "home" - no settings

Pressing "home" doesn't do it for me. All I get is "recent" apps, and task manager is not one of them. Settings seems unaccessible. Ideas, anyone?
I'm running FroydVillain 1.4
I did a long press on the phone button which brought up voice dialer, said "open settings" I used the link provided to install adw launcher, pressed home then selected adw launcher to use to return home.
Here is the solution which worked on HTC Hero / VillainROM 1.4.0
I also had this problem: Expired LauncherPro, Disabled Wi-fi & mobile network, disabled ADB and was unable to access settings.
I downloaded latest update from LauncherPro website and using this guide - / Google It - this message board does not allow me to post links / - (Creating an Android Update.zip Package – RobMcGhee.com) made update.zip file. Then I rebooted into recovery and aplied my file. After reboot Launcher Pro seemed slow at first, but IT WORKED!
I have attached my update file, but use at your own risk.

ADW launcher keeps crashing

Hi,
I newly installed ADWLauncher, got a theme and was customizing it.
Then when I changed a folder name, it crashed (The application ADWLauncher EX (process android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly).
It crashes as soon as it is launched. Worse, because it is set as default launcher, it restarts when I "Force close" it and crashes again.
There is nothing I can do but to press the Force close button.
Can't do anything from computer because I can't turn on the USB debugging mode...
Any help?

Can you get to recovery or Download mode to reflash?
Today I faced the same situation on my Ideos Mobile which has Froyo 2.2 firmware. I went totally insane due to this and started to search on internet, how to hard reset Ideos... I didn't get the desired results. I actually installed the Ubuntu Theme for ADW Launcher and afterwards my mobile got looping on force close. And I wasn't able to access any application as the launcher wasn't accessible.
Solution: I just clicked on the search button on very right side of my mobile and typed settings on there, and to my surprise I was able to access the settings app... From there I navigated towards Application Settings and then uninstalled that UBUNTU theme that caused forced close loop on my Ideos. Try this and hope it would work for you. Btw I am Symbian Lover... Just wanted to change the taste, so grabbed this Android Phone... Android is awesome

I have the similar situation before, boot loop after applying a theme.
if you cannot get into the download mode using key combination, you have to build a jig or buy one online just in case.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...47234&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_511wt_1139
If you are able to get into the download mode, basically you just need to reflash to stock and start from there.
Go to data/app folder (find your adw launcher ex apps) then move to system/app folder see if that one will help.

I faced similar issue (after applying some new theme , ADW launcher crashed and no way to reset to default). I already solved the issue now and later come to this post so thought to help others.
Basically when ADW Launcher crashed, there is nothing bad yet to your phone and those are silly who do factory reset or flash rom. Actually you have everything and you just need to remove the newly installed theme so that original theme again come in to picture. Well, the point is how to do it when you can't acces anything.
The solution mentioned above works when you have search key using which you can go to settings. What if its not there? Note that if you have just applied there and ADW Launcher start crashing then you can again open settings by long press on some configured button (e.g. Home key) and select settings from recently launched apps. Well, in my case I actually restarted phone thinking it might change the situation but it made it worst as I can't access anything. Neither call nor mail, absolutely nothing.
Here is one hope. I saw that status bar still active and when I gave miss call to my mobile, I got it in status bar and then I could access my contacts. So I took benefit of that. I send mail to myself from my laptop with google play link to newly installed theme. When I got notification in status bar for new mail, i click on it to open my mail client, From there I click on google play link and my google play app open with that app with uninstall button. I simply clicked it and voilla !! It uninstalled new theme and I got default theme back. ADW Lancher now working perfactly.
I hope this might help others. Now I have configured some keys on my mobile to work as sortcut to settings so that in case something like this happen I can anytime access settings.

Messed up my phone need help!

Before I even begin, I was a nub didn't know much about rooting and did it anyways. I suppose I have learned it the hard way and now I must pay.
I rooted my phone and everything went fine.
Before knowing much about Titanium Backup Pro I instead of "freezing" application I have accidentally deleted some apps that I shouldn't have.
When I say my phone is messed up I don't mean not "operational"
I can still use it for day to day but for instant.
I deleted backup manager and now I can't even restore my backups from verizon online.
I also when I try to call somebody from my contacts list I get this error
The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I have random errors like that all the time.
I have unrooted and did a factory reset but to no avail.
Is there anything out there that could help get my phone back to the way it was when I received it?
I know its my fault for not learning but there must be something out there
Any help is appreciated.
When you first rooted, a backup is usually created. Go to your recovery and look for backup and restore and restore it.

There is no backup unless you made a backup.
And there's no recovery mode on the Droid 3 yet either.

Thank you for the responses guys.
I have played with it but I can honestly say I have not been able to get it to work.
I have tried following the instructions, even bought Root Explorer but can still not figure it out.
I attached a picture of the error. I just can't seem to do anything to get it fixed. Also I was attempting to re-install backup manager without success.....
Anybody that can help out? Is there maybe an easier way to get back to defaults maybe somebody have an image or something of a stock operating system that could be copied? sorry I have no idea of this stuff yet still learning

Ok here is what I do. Let me know if I am doing ANYTHING wrong at all.
I load up root explorer and transfer my backupmanager.apk and .odex from ex-sdcard to /system/app
then I change the permission to r/w
press and hold the file and go to permission. There I set Owner to Read/Write and Group, Others just have read privilages.
Hold the file again. Then I scroll to the bottom to change owner and group to 0 - root...
Reboot...
The program doesn't appear in my apps? Anything I did wrong?
First off, you are doing it correctly. However, I'm not sure if backup assistant is even an app you can launch from the drawer. You have to launch the "My Accounts" app. Second, you can check if it worked by going into titanium backup, and looking for the app. If the name of the app is in red, then you did it correctly.
Hey thanks for that reply! I have looked into it and like you said, it was there in red but now I can't find the my accounts app all I can find is the my verizon wireless app and our doesn't have any backup functions from what I can tell.
Let me ask you this since you seen to be pretty knowledgeable. I have all the apps on my computer from that file above! Would I be able to just copy paste them with root explorer to /system/apps and then do a system factory restore would that work? Or do I have to manually find the apps I stupidly deleted and do it one by I've like I have been?

If you can't find the app, just go into Settings>Accounts.
As for your question: Unfortunately, it's not that easy (I would know, that's one of the first things I tried when I was fixing that contacts bug ). You would have to set the permissions and owners for every apk and odex file from the system dump. However, that contacts bug should've been fixed if you reinstalled those yahoo apps the same way you reinstalled the backup assistant.
Btw, you do know that backup assistant is pretty pointless since all of your contacts are synced with your Google account, right? People have reported no problems when removing the backup assistant app.
And thanks! I'm no android guru like many others here; just trying to help others with a similar problem that had me stumped for a good hour.
Thanks again. I've located the app but it still gives me troubles and not bein able to sync with the online server please call *811 or something like that. The only reason why I care its because I actually did backup all my contacts to the backup client but couldn't get them back on the phone now! I figured it out last night with syncing to gmail and it worked but still trying to get it back to normal. I will just have to do the rest manually haha! Appreciate it a lot!

I got that error message even without root with all of the system apps in place. Backup Assistant is just a poorly-coded app.
I'm pretty sure you didn't do much damage to your phone. I mean, as long as you didn't remove any other authenticators or other apps that blur needs in order for it to function, you should be fine just reinstalling the yahoo apps I told you about. After all, that looks like it's the only error you're getting.
And no problem.
Alright so now I need urgent help!
I went through the entire applications that I was missing and I gave them all permission etc. Rebooted my device and now I am stuck in this screen.
It's an endless loop because I get the error message and can't exit out of it.
Anything that can be done at all?
Haha, oh wow. I knew I wasn't the only one with that problem. Accounts loved to crash on me whenever I reset my phone. You can fix this one of two ways: hold the search button on your phone until it launches voice search. Say anything; as long as it launches the browser, you'll be fine. Once the search is performed, search for an apk for another home launcher. The accounts app basically hijacked your home button, so you'll need another launcher in order to get your home button back.
The second way involves using the desk dock. If you have one, then go into productivity mode. There should be an app drawer there. Open up the market, and install the launcher of your choice.
Once again, I had this problem even before root, so I'm not sure what the cause for this was.

The second way involves using the desk dock. If you have one, then go into productivity mode. There should be an app drawer there. Open up the market, and install the launcher of your choice.
Once again, I had this problem even before root, so I'm not sure what the cause for this was.

I don't know what I would do without you lol... I was searching google like wild for droid 3 recovery but there is literally NOTHING out there.
Also let me ask you this. If I do a factory reset. Do I have to re-do the whole application proccess to give them permissions or should they be right now
Once it's a system app, it will always be a system app, even after resetting the phone. You should be fine.

So I tried doing the factory reset. Everything went smooth and I was hoping that my phone would be back to the old phone.
I am at the Welcome to DROID 3 screen. Tap on the little green guy, get to the motorola screen from before and same damn error. Except this time, I can't even try to use the voice or search buttons, none of them work.....
What now? I feel so stupid right now

Chameleon launcher on Fire HD?

Let me preface this by saying I am a paying customer of the chameleon home screen and when I get home this evening I will be contacting the developer to see if I can obtain an apk to try and install on the fire HD.
I was mainly curious if someone else has tried this home screen / launcher replacement on the fire. The app itself I love, and it's getting better with additional widgets being added and also an api for other developers.
If I am able to get an apk to try and install, would I go about doing what most others have done with other launchers?
Set proper permissions for the apk
Move apk into system/app and reboot?
If it's more complicated than that, I'm going to give Nova a try using one of the other threads since I'm fairly novice with this stuff. I am however rooted.
Thanks!

I tried it, and it is easy to get working, just like you said, move, change permissions, and I did not need to reboot. After it was in system/app and proper permissions were set, I pressed the home button and I was prompted to pick which launcher to use.
I thought Chamelon looked good in it's adverts, but I was unable to get the widgets to look the way I wanted. I also had a problem with the weather widget. No location was found (even using wifi) and when I selected by zipcode it found my city but would not get the weather information.
I am sure it's user error, but I removed it and gave up for something else.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't had a chance to try Chameleon yet, but still want to do so, hopefully this weekend. I did try Nova launcher and it just force closes any time I try to select it, but I am getting the choice between stock and Nova. Chameleon certainly has it's work ahead for it, but it's promising imo as long as more developers take to it to make some great widgets.
ADW Launcher EX (paid version) works fine.
GO launcher EX works fine also in the system/apps folder.

Replace Launcher

I managed to replace the launcher in Fire OS 5.0.0. I just (sideloaded) copied the apk for smartlauncher and installed it. It was working fine, until the tablet (during use) restarted and installed 5.0.1. After the update, I had the default launcher again.
For older Kindel devices, I read, that you can block (in Lollipop it's now hide) the amazon launcher via adb.
pm list packages does not show a com.amazon.otter package, so hiding it, doesn't work. Instead I found com.amazon.firelauncher but if I hide (block) that package, a tap on the home button brings up a message from the parent control saying "The requested action is not permitted. Check Parental Controls settings and retry."
Any other ideas what I can try to replace the launcher?
Exact same issue here. Looks like the fire os update 5.0.1 locked things down a lot. You also can't give SD card write access to an app anymore as the SD card doesn't appear in the file manager that opens (eg when trying to copy a file from internal to sd card via es explorer) - but this did work on 5.0.0.
Really hoping someone manages to root this thing fairly quickly, it has awesome potential for a cheap little device but Amazon's persistence in locking stuff down is frustrating.
I've tried to set multiple launchers as default, but none of them work. You can't even "clear" the default settings for Fire Launcher. The app "Home Switcher" doesn't work either.
I think we'll have to wait until someone roots it to achieve it, as it is impossible right now.

It's extra annoying because it was possible until the day-1 update. That update prevented changing the default launcher, and prevented micro-sd storage from appearing when granting permissions to write to external storage.

Maybe Gatesjr debloater tool (here on xda) will work to disable launcher package you identified. Also, see if you have com.android.launcher. This is stock launcher on 2014 models running OS 5.
Can we overwrite the ab with the Google now launcher?
Just wondering if anyone's found a solution for this yet. I'm game for being a guines pig and trying things..

Aww, c'mon, be nice. It had been a few days and no one said anything. If anyone had an idea and was looking for people willing to brick to test because it was so cheap, I was willing to offer.
Just for the fun of it, I'm going to play with testing all the different "universal" rooting options to see if I can get around the launcher issue and I'll report back what I find.

There is also a systemui app in there somewhere. I wonder if that is related?

This discussion gives me an idea.. Could one unpack a new fire and block the OTA by disabling the update mechanism allowing for the launcher and sdcard exploit to remain?

If you connect to wifi during the initial setup it automatically does the update. At least it did it on mine.
Yeah that is what I am proposing before ever connecting to WiFi. Hmm is it worth $50 for me to find out. My initial one is already updated so no joy there.

As far as I know someone did that in one of the other threads and then used the OTG ethernet adapter. I personally am not a fan of the idea though to only be able to access the Internet via the adapter.

I'm interested in this issue. There's a thread about using ADB Shell in Fire HD to block the package amazon.device.otter to allow default installation of another launcher. I finally got ADB to accept the Fire 7 (USB driver was a big challenge) but in new version of Android Block command has been replaced by Hide command. Anyway, hiding amazon.device.otter had no effect. On the other hand, hiding com.amazon.firelauncher almost did the trick, it defaults to new launcher (in my case Nova), but then sort of freezes, citing Parental Controls. Anyway, I almost got there. Anyone else's input is appreciated.
Any way to return to the initial 5.0 OS? Damned update...

So I got this working without rooting.
I'm on the latest preview for 5.0.1 asof the time this post was written. I am not sure what I did...
I had sideloaded google play store & services and got that working for 5.0.1. From there I grabbed the google now launcher.
I hid the com.amazon.firelauncher as well as some amazon parental controls package (don't remember the name). It did give me the error about parental controls. I ended up rebooting and it went to the upgrade screen again for updating the OS. It stayed there for a while and I thought it froze so I rebooted again. It then appeared to go through the fire os install again.
Once more it started up (while plugged in to computer) and it gave me the parental controls error. However, after a few minutes the google now launcher started working. It went through some intro screen and viola. My google now launcher now comes up as default when my kindle starts.

Yes that must of been it.
The home button will not work because that parental controls dialog will pop up. To get around it I click up in the google search bar above and then hit the back button. That will cause the desktop to show. It should also show if you close all open programs.
