[Q] Tasks and Birthdays - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the best way to manage tasks and birthdays on Froyo?
Tasks like things I have to do but not necessarily on a specific date but like "do it this week".

For birthdays, enable the special calendar in Google Calendar site and the phone will sync them.

Use gtasks for google tasks.

for birthdays i just sync with my google calendar which i have entered all my people's Bdays into.
for tasks i'm lame. i just schedule an event on my calendar for certains days during the week like "pay phone bill" on wed 11-11:30. works for me and i get the notification reminder and all.

I use gtasks too but I would love if they are shown in the calendar somehow...
for the birthdays I would like to be able to enter them with the phone, I do not want to use the calendar website
edit: I tried to use the birthday calendar on the website, but I can't add a date to it, its always added to my normal calendar...

okay I now got the birthdays into the calendar but they still do not show up on the phone, they do on google calendar website...
I hate that this feature is not implemented naturally on the phone.
even the cheapest phones have a build in calendar for birthdays...but an advanced phone like this not?

Using Astrid for tasks. Syncs online with Google Tasks, too.

You sure you hit the check box for The new calendar? I added all my contacts birthdays as their own calendar and just hit the check box for it.

How to sync with outlook?

As above, how do I use my HTC Dream to sync with my Outlook? Contacts, Calendar entries, Tasks and Notes?
I use "CompanionLink" works perfect.
Personal outlook on your home computer?
Yup, MS outlook on my home laptop.
The only way that I know of is to use a HERO or Rogers rom and the HTC Sync software. Every other solution that I've heard of is a 2 step sync from your outlook to google and then google to your phone.
You'll probably need to install the PCSCII.apk, since most devs remove it from their roms. get that here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4740940&postcount=13
and then download the HTC sync software from htc.com.
Also, if you use a rogers rom, you'll only get contacts to sync, using a hero rom will get you both contacts and calendar.
So the HTC sync software will only work with HTC Hero, am I right?
I'm using it on my G1 that's flashed with Mlign's 2.5.7 Hero Rom. I have not been able to make it work with non-hero roms. But, really I haven't tried too hard at that. I don't know what it needs from the Hero rom. I assume it's the HTC framework.
google Calendar sync works great for the calendar
Oh okay, anyone tried CompanionLink? Is it good?
Companionlink is a Sync through Google solution.
I see. Can it sync contacts and notes, calendar from Outlook?
I've never tried it, but it appears it would at least do Contacts and Calendar. But, if you're willing to sync through Google, I'm sure there a cheaper or even free solutions for that.

Yes it does, it allows you do do categories, outlook folders, alarms, date range, etc (companionLink)
If i'm willing to go through google, what is some of the free applications I can use? Simple sync entries i would need is contacts, calendar entries and notes.
Sorry, I don't know off the top of my head. When I was searching for this, I saw the google has an outlook plugin that will Sync the calendar. I also saw a different plugin that would sync Contacts. I'd start with googling outlook plugins.
good luck.
Companionlink now has a Sync over USB direct with outlook. I was excited and thought that I had finally found my answer. then I read:
----------------------------
Data we sync
* Contacts sync to the built-in address book on the phone
* Calendar events sync to a custom calendar app
* Tasks sync to a custom tasks app
* Notes sync to a custom notes app
Our custom Calendar app shows events in Day view only. Month view and other scheduling options are coming. Recurring events and exceptions are supported. Adding and editing recurring events must be done on the PC.
Our custom Tasks and Notes apps support categories, sort, and search functionality.
----------------------------
Sigh, it doesn't use the built in calendar database, so it won't work with any calendar widget. So close, but still no cigar. Oh well, maybe they'll wise up and just be a sync provider.
1. CompanionLink (http://www.companionlink.com/androidusb/index.html)
2. Mark/Space (http://www.markspace.com/products/android/missing-sync-android.html)
3. Various Google Cloud <-> Outlook solutions (Paid or free, Google them)
4. HTC Sync from some HTC-specific ROMS (e.g. Hero)
Take note that since Android has no built-in notes and tasks applications, nor a standardized database structure for them, those supporting and plan-to-support notes/tasks are/will be syncing to some custom notes/tasks apps.
The Companion's solution even syncs to a custom Calendar app.

Yeah, that was the disappointing part. I don't think a custom calendar app is a good idea.
Not sure if you're willing to pay anything, but roadsync syncs calendar, contacts and e-mail. Even has a calendar widget. I think it's like $25 now (I got in early and only had to pay $10). works well for me though.
how about syncing notes from outlook? is there one that can do that?

Facebook events and birthdays in HTC Calendar.

When my HTC Hero(GSM) was ky primary phone, I remember that I could have birthdays show up in the calendar, so I do not have to go to the Facebook application to see them. It was default on the hero but I can't figure out how to get it to work.
Also, I found myself envious of the new Blackberry Torch because through blackberry messenger, it adds your Facebook events to your calendar automatically. Does anyone know of a way to add this as well?
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Two ways to do this that i have found.
One is to go to facebook on a the computer. Export the calendar, and then Import it into your google account. bleh
What i found today i think will do what you need.
Ebobirthday
can be found in the market. This will log into your face book account to sync with Birthdays. Then you can have it sync with the calendar inside the phone.
Hope that helps you somewhat.
This is sort of what I'm looking for, I still feel like there is a way to do this without having to resync that calendar information. Already in the phone if you pull up a contact, it does give the contact's birthday information, but for some reason it does not include that information in the calendar like it did on the Hero.
That app is a good temporary solution until I figure out how to get it to work just the way I want it. Thank you!
Edit: Playing around with it, I found a section in the menu that lets you add Calendars. In order for my Hero to have been able to sync birthdays to the calendar, there had to have been a Facebook calendar in that list, and there isn't one now. So I think to solve my problem it is just a matter of figuring out how to add Facebook to the HTC Calendar.

Calendar sync issues

Hi I just received my galaxy, so possible a NOOB problem.
The problem is that I have a google calendar, and on my phone it sees both the appointments I have done on the phone and the google appointments - so this is fine.
If I make a appointment via a computer at the net on the google calendar, then it will show up on the phone calendar - this is fine.
BUT if I make an appointment on the phone - it will not show up on the google calendar on the net.
It seems like the phone uses "My Calendar" which is not synced with the google calendar - so have I missed a setting somewhere?
Thanks
When you did the calender mark did you choose google calender and not the phone calender?? take a close look so u have choose that before apply the appointment/mark in the cal. when you set the day/clock under that you can choose what calender to use....I missed that too...
Ok thanks - found the setting.
Is it possible to change the behaviour, so that when you make an appointment on the phone it is by default using the google calendar and not the phone calendar?
I dont think you can set it as default..not sure. With some app maybe? I just have my Galaxy for 4 days so everything is new
Thanks, compared to me you are very experienced (had mine for 1 day)
I would also be interested in a way to change the default.
Additionally I'd like to have the automatically created birthday events appear in one of my Google calendars, not in the phone calendar. Has anybody an idea on how to do that?
It says "with Google" on the phone, if I'm selling my soul to Google, at least I'd like to do it completely and thoroughly.
I'm syncing with my Yahoo Calendars, my 2 Gmail account Calendars
also contact from those 3 accounts too, and IM from MSN, google, yahoo, tweeter, facebook
this phone is Amazing! at keeping everything in sync
just make sure on the account page your accounts are all with the Green sync circle

calendar birthdays..?

I was wondering if there was something I can download or do which will automatically set the upcoming birthdays on my calendar.... My old phone did this.. Even without me automatically inputting it... It basically used the Facebook and had the birthdays appear on the mobile phone's main calendar... Hoping that there is something similar for that..
Google Calendar can be used for this but you would have to add all the birthdays into your contacts in google mail, then subscribe to "Contact's birthdays and events" under "browse interesting Calendars" which can be found under the "add" menu at the bottom left of the page when in google calendar.
Hope this helps
That's not really relevent to WP7 though...
@ProjektFuze Funny you should mention it though i was thinking the same thing yesterday. Hopefully it will be an available feature in the next update.
You can sync Google calendar with wp7, so what ever you add on your pc will show up on phone.
That may be true, but they still won't show in in the WP7 calendar and you'd still have to manually create an appointment or something. As i said, hopefully the update due early next year will provide this much needed feature.
Birthdays are showing in my calendar on HTC hd7.
Will post my settings when I get home.
If you have your contacts in outllook with birthdays set, then you need to export your outlook calendar (csv file) and import it into google calendar.
Birthdays will now show in wp7 calendar.
If you dont have all your facebook contacts in outlook then you could try this -
There’s an app called “Export Friends” that will save you friends names, city, birthday and their current location in a CSV (text) file that you then import into Excel, Gmail or any other web email program.

You might need to import it into outlook first, then export the outlook calendar into google calendar.

Birthday Reminder automatic with contacts

I haven´t been able to find or to make it work for that matter, I wish that my contacts when I include the birthday, would automatically set a reminder in the calendar, so that when the birthday comes I get notified. I have over 500 contacts, and at least 100 with a birthday date added to it, and no reminder is set in my calendar.
I don't synchronize my phone calendar to any other calendar, because I don´t use my computer at home that much, and the one at work gets audited every other week, and people at work are very peculiar when it comes to personal matters.
I would just like to add the contact, and when including a birthday or anniversary, it would automatically be in my calendar, just like Blackberry did or does.
Any help, would be appreciated,
Thanks.
Store your contacts as google contacts not on the phone or on the sim and it should work
