[Q] help with flashing new roms - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody
I need help,I flashed a rom some days agò,I wanted to change it and installed new zip file in my phone,I did this operationcwd recovery)wipe hard reset;wipe cache;wipe kalvin;instal zip file from sdcard;chose zip file;I take the rom file;it seams to start, but every new zip files I have put inside my phone stopped the process with words installing updates, after that,I have to take off battery and reboot,so my question is:do I have to change the name of the new rom file in update.zip? It seams the system cannot find the update file,I don't change the name of the roms file in update,is this the reason why I cannot instal others roms?

nitr8's ROM will help
I can't tell what is going wrong for you.
It seems that you have flashed a custo/rooted/CWM kernel via Odin?
So you are able to flash with Odin?
Last week I wanted to Upgrade my girlfriends SGS and got stuck harder then ever before.
I used to flash JPM to get unstuck but this time nothing worked.
Flashed and flashed and flashed.. My girlfriend was on Insanity 0.99 and I wanted to put her on new Insanity 0.40 JPY.(OTA!!!!)
But I got stuck big time, Then I remembered that Nitr8 made a special fix rom.
This rom comes with root, busybox and CWM.
I flashed it with ODIN using a pit512 file and in one go all was working again.
Then I downloaded the ROM I wanted to install and put it on a Folder on the internal SD (I called the folder rom) then reboot in CWM, and flash your .zip file like normal ( no need to rename to update.zip)
just choose
- install zip from SD
- choose zip from sdcard
now browse to the folder containing your .zip file and that's it..(in my case this would be: rom)
This worked like a charm for me!!
No credits go to me if this works you should thank Nitr8 for all his realy great work... The stuff he makes is just awesome!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843019
or go direct to his site and go to rom and download insane.rar unzip and flash with odin (pit512) (I don't think I checked repartition) http://insanity.rollus.net/index.php?dir=rom/
You don't need to flash a nitr8 rom afterwords.. The roms he makes are extreme basic, all extra's like office, readers, gmail sync and so on are not in his rom.. You can add but this rom is I think to basic for you.. After fixing your sgs with insane.rar you should be able to flash anything you want using CWM..
Goodluck!! (credits to Nitr8)!

Stock 2.1 via odin, stock 2.2 via odin. hardcore's kernel via odin, ANYTHING after that.

Thank you for your answer and help,a friend of mine flashed the firmware with odin and then flashed androdena rom(the rom with pink wallpaper)this rom is great, well done and very fast, but it seams I cannot install others roms,I will try to do that with Odin,I have to lear how to use it before ahahah I'll let you know!
Thank you very much!

Hi,thanks for your answer,I did every passage before coming here, maybe it will better to flash with Odin....I don't know.

[Q]things to do before flashing ROM

hi,
i'm going to flash a custom ROM to my i896, i'm currently on stock ROM + speedmod k12t, have already disable lagfix, and backup all data.
i did researched, but what i want to know is not there.
i know i need to be on stock ROM to before flash, since i'm on stock rom, i still have some questions
so i got 2 questions:
1. do i need to flash back to restore kernel before flashing ROM?
2. after flashed ROM, do i need to flash the speedmod kernel aagain?
thank you.

1. no, you don't need to flash to the stock kernel;
2. usually the rom comes with certain version of kernel, you can definitely replace it if you want to use the latest speedmod, for example.
thank you so much.
i got another question
i use odin3 to flash ROM
i put the ROM file in the PDA section. leave phone and CSC blank.
but what should i put in PIT section?

usually i only use odin3 to flash to the stock rom. you need to put .pit file in the PIT and a tar file in PDA.
but since you are flashing to a custom rom, usually you can get the cwm file and use cwm to flash. it is easy and quick.
yes root phone grab rom manager from app market is easy as pie
grab files 2 flash put them in sd card by phone browser or with usb cable and pc, flash with rom mamanger is easy as 1 2 3
if any more help is needed ill c if i can find thread link tonight also there is a vids on Congnition 3.04 thread makes life easy sence your stock allready u can skip odin if u like but that is perfered way
When I flash new roms, I drop zip onto my sd then boot CWrecovery, then flash zip from clockwork recovery, without using rom manager. I had an issue restoring a nandroid backup i made using Rom manager (md5 sum issue?) and i couldn't restore the backup. I read somewhere this can happen from time to time. Rom Manager is good, you can rename your backups. Flashing roms gets addictive!!

About the md5 sum error, sometimes having spaces in your backup name will make it say that. Remove spaces and it should work again.

[Q] Custom Kernel flashes via Odin but doesn't download on the phone

[Q] Custom Kernel flashes via Odin but doesn't download on the phone
Hello.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 running CM7 nightly build 04282011, I followed the posted guides and flashed both the Speedmod and CM7 kernel without issue using Odin.
I downloaded the Glitch Kernel V6B, wiped the data cache and davlik cache. I put the phone into download mode, opened Odin and connected the phone via USB. Odin reported the phone as connected.
I place the Zimage.tar which I extracted from the zip into PDA with auto-reboot and reset time ticked. I start Odin, the process is 'successful' but I notice the blue download bar doesn't appear on the phone, anyway I'm just happy I haven't bricked the phone! It reboots, loads CM7. I check in 'about' and the kernel has not changed!
I'm at a loss, as to what I'm doing wrong. I suspect it must be the way I'm extracting the Zimage file from the Glitch V6B zip, because when I extract it (Windows 7) using 7-zip it is just a plain Zimage file. I rename it Zimage.tar and Odin recognizes it. Hopefully I'm being a complete noob, as I want to overclock!
Many Thanks
Turbotab
If Odin does not install it is usually file wrong format /wrong file .
Choosing a very advanced rom to start with .
jje
I think you're right about the wrong format. Unlike the other 2 kernels I mentioned which were just Zimage.tar, the Glitch kernel came in a zip file with lots of other files. Do I have to compile / extract this in a certain way, or better yet is there a guide?, I had a look but couldn't see one.
Cheers
Anybody?, sorry if it's a noob question.
tk-glitch's kernel does not need flashing thru odin.
you simply place the zip file on the root of your sd card and boot into recovery and flash it that way.
extracting it and flashing through odin.... your lucky that you didnt brick your phone.

Thanks pal, worked a treat. Note to self to learn about bootloaders, don't want a Samsung paperweight!

How do i update to Darkys v10.2 extreme edition?

(sorry i ment how do i update to v10.2.2 final)
Ive installed it but it gets stuck on boot up
Maybe i need to install other firmwares before this?
Been 2 days and i dont know how to update :/
Thank you!
it's not that hard, first u need to download darky 10.2 for odin then put phone in download mode then open odin then connect usb to pc. Select pit512 and the zipped PDA to odin PDA and flash.
I believe Darky has his own forum, which should contain the necessary tutorials.
The above poster described flashing your phone with a program called Odin. I'm sure if you searched this forum for "odin tutorial" you'd find more than enough threads to help you.
Also, try to be more specific next time.
flash this first http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
then put 10.2.2.zip on sdcard and flash it with CWM (install .zip from sd card option in recovery)

[Q] SGS debrand

Hey guys.
Just bought a brand new SGS on Portugal Vodafone last week. On first day, and after read some hours here in the foruns i already rooted it and unlocked it ^^
Now a question arrises, debrand the bastard!!! i hate the Vodafone animation on the start after the first boot logo that says Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000, hate the vodafone bloatware that fuls the screens, and sincerely dont like the lots of Samgung App that sneeks around every corner of the phone.
Already flashed and debranded other phones so im not really a BIG noob on the thing, but im a really NOOB on Samsung phones. To be honest im scared with all the procedures that exists... Already backed up EFS folder for starting. attached you can find 2 screenshots i taked of the version and about screens
I can enter recovery and download modes and already noticed i cant install Clockwork Recovery ( is it the best here for the SGS, or stock one is suficient? ) because im at 3e version of android recovery and not 2e. id love to try the ROM MANAGER app...
So as im at 2.3.3 i guess i'll wait for a custom ICS, but i really would like to get ride of this bloatware, stock or custom ( i like cyanogen roms )... is there a soul that is willing to help me?
thanks in advance
Nuno
Hey,
seems you want try ICS rom. Okay here ya go:
1. First you want rooted ROM with CWM installed. Easiest way to do this is flashing a "base
ROM" like this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ficeto.u/files/JVU/JVU-RE.zip/download
(Thanks Darky and Ficeto, http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-jvu-re-gt-i9000.6558/)
2. Extract the files, you should have: Odin 1.3, .pit file and PDA.tar
3. Now open Odin, set .pit file
-tick repartition
-set PDA.tar into "PDA"
-put your phone to "Download Mode"
-make sure all is okay and your phone is detected by Odin (if isnt't, you have to install SGS drivers to your PC)
-click start
4. When flashed, wait until your phone reboots. (nice sound fx, eh?)
5. Now your phone is rooted and has CWM recovery.
6. Now download Teamhacksung's CM9 ICS .zip:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593
-download also Google apps
7. Put your phone to PC and copy these files to your phone internal sdcard.
8. Go to recovery and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition
-then install .zip from sdcard
-choose your zip
-flash
-when flashed, flash Google apps
-wipe data&cache again, or calendar sync wont work
9. If it goes to bootloop (wont pass samsung galaxy bootlogo) flash again.
If Google sync won't work, you have to install Google apps fixer from CM9 thread.
Hope I helped, ask if you didn't understand something=)
You are doing this at your own risk

Done, wonderfull explanation, all runned ok fine. im at 2.3.6 now on darky's ROM. I'll make a full backup with CWM Recovery to the SD so i can back always back to this step
Deep Breath, and here we go again, lets go eat an Ice Cream Sandwich
Very glad to hear all went okay!
Teamhacksung has released new CM9 build today, try it
Also, Codename Android has quite stable ICS build, and I think it's the most stable ICS build so far.
Welcome to ICS, it tastes good!

[Q] Flashing stock rom using odin

Hello,
I will start with saying that Ive already checked every tutorial in every android website.
here is what I did.
I had Miui (Not the ICS one) I have tried to flash CM9 with the existing recovery. than something somewhere on the flash procedure go wrong and the phone just rebooted and putted in loop with no recovery option but download option. so I tried to flash the stock rom using odin 1.85, and the phone just looping on the image of the mobile operator. I did this procedure with the odin for more stock roms I found.
thanks in advance really I need your help...
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/
maybe you forget ‘Re-Partition’checkbox, it's important.
Hmmm.. perhaps, you have to make sure all the files are properly placed (depending on the ROM you are installing). Also, I'd recommend using a pit file (and don't forget to click on "Re-Partition".. So far, it worked for me. ^.~
