[Q] I9000M Can't boot! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I know the questions have been asked many times, but I did not see any good answers.
I have an I9000M an d I tried upgrading to froyo 2.2. I first tried with Kies, but it wouldn't. It would see my phone, I could add music, add/save contact, but when I upgraded it would just disconnect.
I turned to Odin's method. I had the seemingly frequent problem of it being stuck at "File Analysis" It had been there for an hour or so... So I got it was not working. I then had the bad idea of unplugging it, and now I'm stuck at the screen on boot with a [phone]---[exclamation mark]---[pc].
I can't get into either recovery or download mode anymore (tried with 3 buttons, but wasnt able anyways before, and ADB don't see my device (nor does Odin or Kies).
I tried removing the battery for about a minute and rebooting/replugging, etc. Nothing works.
What can I do more...?
Thanks

Without download mode (VOL Down, Home, Pwr) then your only options is to either send it in for repair or try to get download mode working with a homemade Jig.
More on that Here.
I heard story's of people of forcing it to go into download mode using heat as well from say a hair dryer. But I do not recommend that.

Also I'm just curious as how you used odin without even having download mode? I'm having my doubts that when you said I know this question has been asked many times but you have not found a good answer is true. Next time do a bit more reading before just flashing your device. If you have even 1 thing your not sure about when flashing your phone that's 1 to many.

Puzzled also .
First question has to be can you actually get the phone into download mode .
Thats the big yellow download sign .
That has to be your first step get download mode on your phone .
Odin does not work without download mode so if no download mode who knows what you where trying to achieve or did achieve .
jje

No, I could get it in download mode BEFORE attempting to flash. Then I started Odin.
Now, I'm stuck with the image on boot screen and I can't do a thing. Phone is not recognized anymore on my PC so ADB/KIES/Odin won't see it.

Remove Kies and reinstall that will make sure the drivers are OK .
Get into download mode if 3 buttons fail then you need the jig as posted.
Could try removing battery go to three button download mode and as you are holding down the buttons stick the battery back in to see if it enters download mode .
jje

Thanks guys for all the tips...! But nothing seems to work. It's just stuck at the connect error icon (?) and when I try to go in download mode either way, it just loops. (Icon appears and dissappears)
Two more questions:
1) If i have to get it repaired, do I contact Samsung or my provider ? (Bell in this case)
2) I'm at ease with electronics and stuff, so the jig should't be too hard to do for me, but is it guaranteed to work ? I mean, is it software-independant. Is there a problem that I can have that would prevent it to work ?
Thanks again!

Will work. Had the same issue as yours were I could not get into download mode and the phone would not boot either. The jig saved my phone. You can make your own or you can buy it on ebay. Good luck.

Good, should have all that at my job. Will try it.

Finally, it turns out that I called Bell and they told me that this was a common problem with these devices and they are sending me a new one!
Well.. whatever it was! haha
Thanks again for the help though!

I know,Another Bricked Phone...sigh

I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port
Sent from my SCH-I897 using XDA App
Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

You guys rock! I don't know how, cause I could have sworn I D/L'd it from that link before and I got the generic Odin, but it looks like I have the right one now! Thank you for your patience with us noobs as we start getting into this new world!
glad you got yours working. i have officially given up and receiving a new one on tuesday. i tried everything but somehow someway the phone is not recognized in download mode. oh well have to mess the with new one then lol

I was having the same problem. Have you tried powering off, start odin, hold both the volume up/down, then plug in the usb to your phone?

BRICKED 1st post edited.

EDIT:
odin crashed while going back to stock then
my phone will get to download mode buuuuut.. my computer doesnt recognize my phone...
i re-downloaded drivers and the phone is recognized however odin failed the 2 times i got it in dl mode(took about an hour to get it each time)... so i have a jig ordered but with odin not working im not feeling optimistic
nothing seems to happen when its plugged into the wall no battery icon. i reinstalled drivers hoping that would help with no luck.. i just got it back in dl mode after like an hour of it not turning on for me but it doesnt do anything once i get it there.
Get odin3 one click and use it in dl mode. It will brg ur phone back to stock

definately problem of bad USB..either cable or port....try using different USB cable or different computer....Use full odin by iCezar...its with minimum risk....specially very beneficial in cases like yours....
my pc doesnt see my phone. thats the issue i cant use odin. and the only thing my phone will do is glow black or go to download mode, idk if its charging but its getting hard to get it in dl mode, multiple tries atm no luck
i have already tried reinstalling the drivers. what are they called so i can delete them and install again rather then just redownload maybe that will help?

nope this only happened AFTER my crash on odin. my pc has always seen the phone.
try connecting your phone to pc when odin is already running. See whether it detects. Mine worked this way.

thats not a big deal, just get it in download mode, and flash it with odin.
EDIT: might as well us this post to say what my computer says with usb since i got in in dl mode again...
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.
then something about for assistance in solving this issue click here
this has happened to me acouple times, the first was my fault I pull the usb before odin finished. I could get back into Download mode but Odin would not see the phone and computer would not recognize the phone either, device not recognized.
I tried rebooting, re-installing drivers etc. did not work.
but after an hour or so I finally got it to recognize and odin'd back to stock and back to flashing I was.
this is what I did hope it works for you.
1. disconnect all usb devices
2. un-install captivate drivers
3. reboot computer
4. goto device manager and verify that there is no USB device errors, if there is delete them and reboot again verify again in device manager.
5. install captivate drivers
6. reboot computer
7. start ODIN (DG or iCezars, iCezars is safer)
8. plug USB cable into the computer first (the one that came with the phone not an after market one)
9. hold both up and down volume buttons on the phone
10. plug the usb cable into the phone quickly to get into download mode (if I plugged the phone is slowly ODIN did not recognize the phone no COM, once I did it quick and it picked it up)
11. push START as soon as ODIN shows the COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4 etc (this had to be done quickly too, If i waited ODIN would show the COM but still would not start flashing back to stock)
this worked for me more than once I hope it helps you good luck
oh ok thanks, ill give that a try when i get off of work. i hope my battery doesnt die idk if its charging or not
well no luck even getting back to download mode. i bought a jig so i guess im waiting and trying while i wait.
i keep reading its possible to completely brick if odin fails... did i perma brick?
well a bump of sorts, the jig should come in the mail tomorrow. i miss my phone
jig came in the mail, im working on a few failed odin3 attempts but as i freaked out and started typing this post it seems like a great success. the jig works wonderful

I have not had to do this but I know some others had issues with Odin and had to right click on Odin and run as administrator for it to work. Also the Odin 1 click should work in almost any situation to get you back to stock. The only worry (again never had the problem) is that depending on the build version of the phone you could lose the three button recovery. Look for the Odin that DG posted.

Did you try a jig?

[Q] Phone, Exclamation Triangle, PC - No Download mode

I'm really sorry, I searched for solutions but didnt found one that fits my problem.
I'm a total newbie and ****ed up my phone in many ways. I started trying to install something it wasnt suposed to work on my phone (rom destinated to 9000 and stuff). I have a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000b (sold to latin amarica) and came from factory with android 2.2.
I'm now stuck with the black screen of death, no matter what I do I get this screen. It hapened after I tryied to install unsucessfully the original rom of the phone and odin presented me with an error.
Before I try any further I'd like your advices as how to procede regarding my 9000b. Pulling the battery out, putting it in again and holding either vol down or both volumes and either pluging the phone on usb or pressing power allways gives me the same result, the screen with phone exclamation triangle and pc.
So, before I buy a jig cable on ebay that will probably take 3 weeks to get here (Brasil) is there anything else I can try?
Please help me, I'm desperate and I dont want to take it to assistence, it would cost me much money and ruin all my courage in trying to use Roms.
Thanks alot and sorry for the bad english.
so did you have the 3 button combination before this happened ??
have you tried to charge the phone whilst powered off, then when the phone gets hot, try download mode then ? sometimes this works, as heat can help download mode work.
another thing that has worked for SOME people, is leaving the battery out for 10mins, doing the 3 button combo, and whilst holding the 3 buttons, insert the battery.
you could try these and see what happens,
And 3 weeks delivery for the JIG is a long time, couldnt you make one in less that 3 weeks.
If you can't get into download mode, you are screwed until you get your hands on a jig, simple as that. Just wait. Patience is a virtue.
Thanks in advance for the quick reply guys, I ordered the jig, estimated 20 days, usualy it takes the same amount from the central postal ofice to my home since they allways restrict packages from hong kong. I'm considering making one but I'm a total denial in eletronics.
I was able to get to download mode before this problem yes. I would just hold down vol and center key and then power. Now even when I plug it in to charge I get the screen with the exclamation.
Any more sugestions?
no other suggestions other than whats listed above
looks like you will have to wait for the JIG to arrive.
Loner-phone here you come lol
Then I have a couple of questions.
1) Since I plut it in directly on the power and still recive the same screen is the phone still charging? Or once the battery is over I'm ****ed up twice?
2) Is there any chance that the jig wont work or I in some way ****ed up my I-9000b permanently?
3) After I make/get a jig how should I procede? I heard about one-click odin, but apears that its for another model of phone, and since I got on all this trouble exactly for trying to do things to my phone that were suposed to be only for another model, I'm kind of lost.
Inputs?
Thank you all for already awnsering my questions.
1) the system is corrupted so the charging indicator will be too - thus leading to Phone ! PC image - this is the only image the phone can now produce
2) The 'JIG' has a 100% success rate - providing that the motherboard is not fried - which it isnt as it still shows an image
3) the jig is just a modified USB, just plug it into the phone whilst powered off and download mode will appear, and then you just attach your genuine USB cable and flash stock ROM thru ODIN.
azzledazzle Thank you very much for your patience, but since I`m a total newbie to all this, some of your awnsers I didnt understood fully, do you care explain me better?
Regarding question 1) The power indicator is corrupted, ok. But this means if my battery die out of usage it wont charge again or just that the indicator wont show that is charging but the battery actualy is charging?
and for question 3) Is ther any tutorial directed to I-9000 on how to use odin to flash a stock ROM ? like baby steps? After all that I'm even afraid to turn the phone on, so I would like to know exactly what to do. I`m cosindering asking someone with technical skills to help me on a home made jig.
oh im sorry, i get carried away sometimes.
1) i assume the battery will be charging yes. only the phone will not be able to show this due to the corruption.
2) when you have made / bought a JIG (link below) you ideally want to flash a Stock ROM, you can get this from samfirmware (link below) and also on this site is a tutorial on how to use ODIN, its fairly easy if you just read the instructions provided.
JIG: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551&page=3
Firmwares : www.samfirmware.com
ODIN download and guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
Its a miracle, somehow I managed to get into download mode. But I'm still a bit insecure
Here is the deal, I dowloaded a .tar file that alledgedly from my carrier and for my country. The tar is named JPA_JP3_JPA.
Inside the file there are cache.rfs factoryfs.rfs modem.bin param.lfs zimage
But what should I put where on ODIN if I only have PIT PDA PHONE and CSC?
And how can I discover if I should use pit 512 or 803?
Should I consider a master clear setting?
the file you downloaded is a full firmware compressed into 1 .tar file.
so in odin load the .tar file into PDA section and THATS IT !!
DO NOT USE PIT WITH THIS FILE.
press start and enjoy
PS do a factory reset after the flash

Hello all!
I've got my hands on a GT-I9000 today.
It's got 2.3.3 Android on it.
Wanting to install CM7, I was first of all trying to root it.
I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8, thus I downloaded heimdall-frontend and the "Hardcore's SpeedMod kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery".
When I put my phone into DL Mode and connect it to my Mac, I can't write the image to it.
Heimdall is failing with "Failed to receive device info response!"
What do you ppl suggest me to do now?
Thanks,
F.

Indeed I now managed to get Windows XP PC.
one trouble still remains: after rooting the device remains in an infinite reboot loop!!!
It only stops when WiFi is disabled.
Any help bout this?
Or at least any means to get back to a factory ROM?
I got 2.3.3 before flashing...
Thanks!
Try to flash the nightly again, should solve the bootloop-issue.
Or you can wipe cache/dalvik cache, this helped me too.

I accidentally Flashed a vibrant rom on my i9000. When I finally did get it into download mode with the JIG, I flashed back to stock firmware with ODIN and It totally ruined my phone.... The screen went all crazy and it kept rebooting faster than odin could do anything to it.
Just be careful. Im really not sure what happened But its pooched now for sure. JTAG is my only option on that one
if u dont own JIG or u dont know how to use ADB . the other way is
remove battery from phone /sim card / sd card
take the USB connect with ur Laptop or PC ( dont use it with charger it will not work)
connect with ur phone , then u will see the black screen being lil bit lighter
pres the 3 combos button to enter download mode and then flash ur ROM
this always worked for me , i hard bricked 4 times already my phone :/
