Swipe vs GB keyboard - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wanted everyone's opinion on this. I never used swipe before, but I seen my brother using it and it looked pretty cool. I know a few people use it, So I wanted some opinion's on what hero users think. Thanks
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™

I'm in the Swype beta, and I've used it in the past, but it can be a pain in the ass to get working after changing roms, so I generally use the LatinIME board. All things considered though, Swype kicks ass once you get used to it.

I'm using it now & it's nice but yeah you do have to get used to it but after you should be good to go. Once you get used to it you'll notice your texting & typing will become a lot quicker

For those of you who use the touch (non swiping) keyboards I'd recommend trying out SwiftKey.
I used swype almost since the beta was first released and never thought I'd switch. But after using the SwiftKey beta for about a week - back when it was still in Beta - it changed my mind.
The predictive text works really well and there's a lot less movement compared to swype.
But out of the two options the OP listed, I'd definitely go for swype. No question

Where can I get a swype apk download ?

Personally I prefer the GB keyboard. I've used both. I can type very quickly with the GB keyboard. Swype and the HTC keyboard are tied for second.

In my opinion, I think Swype is really good but. I think the HTC keyboard is really good, but since I found the ginger bread keyboard I think its awesome. On the other hand, there are some tweaks that I want but ill wait till the next generation keyboard

It just isn't happy when you switch between them.. You have to reinstall a lot if you are a chronic flasher..
I prefer swype totally, swiftkey is awesome however not free, gingerbread is good.. If swiftkey were free I would go with it, but its not so swype is it..

I think swype's the best, that's just my two cents

Yeah I think swype is the best too but if you do try it I would back it up with titanium & make sure it's installed on the phone cuz just like someone said earlier with the chronic flashing we do especially with switching roms it will disappear on you & if it's not on the internal memory it will go bye bye when you reboot or unplug your phone via USB ...learned from experience it was a drag -____-

I don't think its a rom issue, its more the way they have you go about installing it.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Froyo-on-Hero action here!

I like swype tried swiftkey (i found somewhere) it's cool killing the gb keyboard. But swype is where it's at but it runs out ( mental note to self use apk manager to hack swype to stop running out of time) of time.

You know, I just reinstalled swype, and had no troubles with it. They seem to have changes the way the installer functions. I even had issues installing this on stock unrooted Sense.

if you've never used swype your texting on the GB/original rom keyboard will be A LOT faster
BUT
once you get used to swype and gain some experience with it under your belt you'll see that your texting/typing will be A LOT LOT faster than the keyboard
my first week of using swype i saw a noticable difference in speed for the better....but believe me that first few days i was so frustrated with swyping lol

APP drawer orginizer?

My girl and i both have G1s. Her phone uses DXtop and is not rooted. Her DXtop has the ability to orginize APPs in her APP drawer. I have been looking everywhere and cant find anything that alows my rooted G1 to do the same. Is there anything out there that can manage APPs in the drawer on a rooted G1 running cyan 4.0.4?

Advanced launcher is a home replacement. I'm interested in a theme or application that is not running over my original home but allows the APP drawer to be customized. Besides, it also states that it is not usable with Cyan 4.0.4. Any other ideas?

its not a home replacement like dxtop....it actually replaces the one you have
did you even read the op properly?
I'm confused by myself. So here's the description: u17 ist still the old version for cupcake releases. There is a standalone and a replacement. Both are for cupcake based builds.
Then there ist v2.0.1. It's the new version. It's for donut based builds. And it's currently only the replacement version, standalone will come.
So don't use v2.0.1 on cupcake based builds (like cyanogen's 4.0.4 stable) and don't use u17 or u17_replacement on donut based builds (like the cyanogen experimental branch).

i.e........ u17 is compatible with 4.0.4 but not donut
read the op and use the replacement version instructions to fix up your build

I would love to see my productivity numbers before and after. Between XDA, Hulu, CNN, and some other randum stuff I might look up I don't know how I get anything done. Good thing I do programming so I can just say "Hey this stuff got me stumped." Also I know how to really drag out a project. Good thing I work with a bunch of goof off's too.

i know what you mean xD
yesterday i spent 3 hours debugging another teams program. they had 6000 SLIC and it crashed on run time. I figured what the hell, im up for a challenge. well the whole program crashed because of one letter
fliers instead of flier
both flier and fliers were valid so it compiled fine but crashed when it was run. the exception being thrown was nowhere near (in a completely unrelated class) where the error was and the debugger on eclipse missed it completely.
turns out, the guys made bets on how long it would take me to find it. (i beat all their wagers. i told them to give me the pot or id report their asses. see, im super productive XP )
because of that diversion, i didnt get my team to finish their project so i made them stay after xD

LOL. Yea one lil letter, number, space, or character and that throws everything off. I've had to go thru line by line studyin everything to see whats been wrong and after awhile everything just blurs together. Luckly I'm workin on a couple different projects that use arbortext which makes everything alot easier. But there's those times arbortext messes up and its back to lookin at the code in text pad or word pad and wow you already know how that is.

[Q] Phone Keypad/Dialer input for Gingerbread?

Using the Aosp 2.3.2 Gingerbread....lovely ROM, however I hate the keyboard. I think I had this problem with a CM build as well but didn't keep around long enough to care.
I've been using the phone keypad for text input for years and don't want to change.
Are there options?
Huh? Are you talking about T9? Smart Keyboard Pro has a T9 function I think.
no im talking about this...
well, I'm not awesome enough to post a link yet apparently. It involves installing the htc_ime.apk
This just force closes everytime I tap on a box to input text.
I want the dial keypad, of course with T9. As seen in attached.
Did they get rid of this altogether? Or is it just this rom?
just checked SmartKeyboard...trial version. yes that's what I was looking for. Never saw that as an option in any searches.
Thanks, I'll continue to play with it, but it would be nice to have the HTC Input work being that it is free and all.
HTC anything won't work without htc frameworks (as inside an htc/sense rom)
Google this "flext9 keyboard apk hvga". I believe it has what you need as well as a swype-like function AND a shapewriter-like function. I can't upload it for you from my phone but you might have luck with google.

There are several applications on the market like Evenbetter (paid app) or Better Keyboard 7 (free) that have the input you are looking for, which is in and off itself called "T9" text input. Just do a search in the market for "T9" to see your options.

Tap in the three xda letters; then, on the far left end of the suggestions, you should see xda itself; tap it. Once done, the bar should change to asking you if you want to add that word to the dictionary - tap that and it gets added.
Thank you.

That one raised by blood pressure more than a few points before I finally figured it out as well...
Also, if you go into Settings>Language & keyboards>Swype settings>Word suggestion and uncheck Auto-correction, it won't use the word it thinks you want in lieu of the word you typed when you hit the space key (which drove me crazy until I changed that setting).

I'm not seeing any lag with a non-overclocked NC.
Heck, it works beautifully on my Nook Color (7.0.2) and my HeroC
I was having constant lockups running CM7. I started uninstalling apps that were running services. When I uninstalled Swype, the lockups mostly stopped. I don't know if this was a coincidence. Anyone else experience lockups with Swype on CM7?
No lockups here and +1 for being super happy to have Swype on the NC. I had experimented enough to be able to hook up a usb keyboard and it worked, but it was a bit awkward using it. So I was looking for a small BT keyboard and then Swype sent me THE email. Very pleased and finally feel like my NC is all that it needs to be for my uses.
I feel very stupid, but where in the heck can I down load swype??? I go to the link but don't see a DL.

[Q] Where is swype?

I have not been able to find or enable swype on the Thrill. i like swype and would love to be able to use it. Also the voice button in text messages, where is that?
Thanks.
Nevermind.
Well i feel like a noob, and well kind of am partly. Been an iphone user for years and the infuse was my first droid. had issues with it, and my 30 days was coming to a close so i got the thrill.
Kinda sad i couldnt wait any longer and get the sgs2. oh well.
anyways i pulled the swype apk from the infused 2.1 rom and it installed fine.
thanks gtg465x for putting together a great rom for the infuse. cant wait to see what you do with the thrill.

like i said, i just pulled the swype.apk from the infused 2.1.0 rom and it works great. and i do love the sprint keyboard. the others were crap. in my opinion all keyboards no matter what the input method need 1-0 along the top, not like a messed up numpad.
You might try Touchpal. I didn't like swipe at all. But Touchpal runs like swipe and I love it. It's also a really good non-swipe type keyboard also all with prediction.
Ultra Keyboard will let you use swipe type input. It is my default keyboard.I have not tried Touchpal Keyboard, but it is free and also has swipe input.

Ditto. Every time I try to switch, I hate the fact that I can't swipe back to delete. It's become quite a crutch for me.
Yeah, TouchPal was making me swear (irl) way more than I felt appropriate. Been on AOSP for so long on my jewel I'd gotten pretty attached to that one. Google keyboard ftw!
