USB Desktop Sync Cradle - Galaxy Tab Accessories

Found this on ebay, looks good. Wonderin if anyone ever seen any more of this.

its too fancey for me, but i dont see why it would have any problems

Bought one - does charging fine for me - don't use it for syncing.
Cons - getting to buttons isn't the easiest when it's docked. It's a bit "fancy" and takes up a fair bit of space on the desk.
Pros - fairly cheap for a dock at the moment. If you feel like a bit of DIY you can remove the black docking section and wiring and put in a smaller stand bit. Next month's job for me.

I've also found this one:
http://www.4u-mobi.com/onlineshop/online_shop_detail.php?pid=5678
I haven't seen any reviews on it yet, but it looks pretty nice. Comes in both black and white.

Hmm gonna need too get me one of those docks Hate keep unplugging the usb plug and plugging it in the wall outlet adapter every time i want too charge than back too the computer when i want too sync..
Even tho it charges threw usb on my computer but very slow...

This is bugging me too. I was actually thinking of picking this up so that it would allow me to switch at the press of a button.

Anyone think of a reason this would not work?

It will probably work, but you'll have same results (charging wise) as on normal USB. Without original Samsung cable, the tab will always open the USB connection window.
BTW; the tab will charge on any USB, even on your computer USB, only thing is it will charge slower. Also, it will state that the battery is not charging, but it will charge just fine anyways.
You may not be able to charge enough to keep the batter at 100% if you're doing some heavy processing on the Tab, but it will prolong the battery life.

You could make one of these for one side of the switch and then it'll switch the Tab to fast-charge. If you have it plugged into a 1A or greater power source, it should charge faster than just the standard usb trickle.
Or if you're feeling adventurous, just open that switch up and put the resistors inline on one of the usb ports itself.

I can charge the tab fine via my pc; although as you mentioned it indeed is much slower rate. I hate having to unplug from computer to power adapter when I want to get a full charge quickly; thus the switchbox idea.
I actually went ahead and order one, although different one from what I listed above. It was only $13 shipped so I figured I'd give it a shot. Also picked up a universal dock / stand. I'll post back how well it works and picts when I get it.

What about this one?
Whats your thoughts on this dock/cradle/charger?
...Cant Post link soo....

I like it, but want to know if anyone has any previous experience.

[Q] USB Charging with Pc/Mac

I'm having an issue, and seems not just me,that I can't charge the Tab via usb connected on a laptop or a Mac book (pro).
I'm wondering if its firmware related, I've tried JID and JI6 same issue.
Are you guys having the same?
If someone is not having this problem can please be so nice to tell me the firmware version?
Thanks
no, you cannot charge the tab from a PC usb slot cause of some minimum power requirements which was the same way with ipad

No is not the same than ipad, ipad is possible to recharge with new macs (that what apple says on the web site, the don't say how new though). But is true the iPad has 2A battery versus the Galaxy Tab that has 4000mAh, I was hoping that there was a way to recharge it (slowly but at least to keep it alive when is connect)

Mine is the same guys... I left my AC charger at work over the weekend and have been charging it via USB the whole time... Slow but it gets there if you leave it on over night!
Mine won't charge unless I use the power adapter from Samsung
Mine does charge but slowly from USB.... you should also know that different PC boards and laptops have different power outputs.... in most cases, your tab should charge very slowly on USB power. Mine charges and has BT and Wifi on also... but with heavy use and plugged in to my laptop, it may offset and drain ever so slightly....
Same thing goes for car chargers... if not rated for higher output, it will charge VERY slowly. The original Samsung car charger has a much higher power output. If you can find one that has the same aftermarket USB car adaptor for Ipad charging, that should work too

The contacts on mine are upside down compared to an iPad/iPod/iPhone charger. The blade on which the contacts sit is also higher in the charger slot than an iPad charger. How did you get it to fit without breaking something?
Some PC:s (motherboards) have so weak power output via USB, that they just barely provide a mouse and a keyboard but nothing more.
So anyone should not expect it to be enough for charging Tab.
Tab's own power supply gives 2 Amps out!
My experience about car-usb-adapters: one can charge Tab, other quite similar for some reason not. However, both charge Galxy S fine.
Just something to keep in mind as an option... Usb 3.0 will give more juice to usb cables than current usb ports. Apple has "cheated" and already increased the power to the regular usb ports on their newer laptops on par/better with usb 3.. So... If you get usb 3 cards installed you'll have a port with enough amps to charge the tab. Easier/cheaper to just buy a pdmi cable but if you are about to upgrade to usb 3 its more incentive to do so.

Regarding the ipad charging you can use the below link to to download an ASUS program that will boost the USB power for Windows this works for the ipad and it's showing as charging when connected to my PC this may also work for galaxy tab

Charging using usb on my mbp does take a long time. I timed it and it took at least 6 hours to charge from completely empty to full. Its ok since I plug it in when I'm about to go asleep and by the time I'm up its fully charged.

Careful with that.
Seems it has the not-uncommon tendency to screw up USB drivers to the point that mice and keyboards won't work either, especially on Win7 and Vista X64 machines. It got me, had to do a system restore to fix it. Neat idea though.

USB port should give at least 500mA. But anything more is OK. So Apple can make their USB ports to give anything over 500mA and it is well within the standard. Actually it is good for everyone because if Apple port can give 2A you can use non powered hubs and have power for lots of USB devices.
Actually the Tab charges fine (albeit slowly) from a USB, you just have to be aware of a few things. Firstly as mentioned above some USB ports provide more power than others. Try the different ports on your machine and you'll soon figure out which ones work best. Secondly, while the Tab will display the "Connect your charger" message, it is actually charging. Go into Settings, About Phone, Status and watch the battery level. It'll take a while but will creep up. Finally, it charges faster when the Tab is switched off. ie: if you're actually using it, you won't get a charge, if you have it in standby with screen off, it'll charge slowly (takes most of a day for a full charge) and if the Tab is switched off, it'll go a lot faster (though still not as fast as with the power adapter.)
This is good to know as you can plug it in to your computer and let it set on your desk at work all day and know that it is slowly trickle charging.
I also found that plugging the USB cable into an Apple adapter (from an iPhone) brought up the same "Connect your charger" message, but did charge the Tab, faster than a USb but not as well as my samsung plug.

Charge off USB possible ??

Is there any way to get the NC to charge off the USB port hooked to a PC and not the wall charger ?? Is it possible at all ?
amen to that. Its stoopid that you cant use a microusb for charging. I only have 50 of em. I know the vable is special but they should have made it a different design to not lead us on!
My NC charges just fine with a standard micro USB cable connected to either a wall charger or PC.
It displays "Not charging" but it does in fact charge.... however, it takes a lot longer than with the provided cable and wall-charger.
The socket on the NC has connectors for both standard USB and their proprietary stuff.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is the same saga that iPad users went through. The device requires 2 amps to charge correctly, but a standard usb port only offers 500 milliamps or 1/4 of the required dosage. So while I havent tested it myself, it sounds feasible that the nook is charging, however its nowhere near the required amperage to show the charging icon on the device.
It sure does take a long time on a computer. Over night isn't enough. Even my Ipad charger takes for ever on the NC.
Charges just fine
Mine charges just fine, as long as I use the nook cable that came with it. I plugged it in to the PC this morning and it was only about 70% charged. I don't know how long it took, but when I grabbed it a few moments ago, the n was green and it was fully charged.
Mine charges from ~30% to 100% in about 3 hrs, via USB to a computer. I always make sure I use task killer to kill most processes before charging. It makes a huge difference.
after root I have been able to charge from usb. btw, despite the message below, this reply is sent from my NC via xda app.

Been charging it from USB since day 1. As luck would have it, I forgot the wall plug at my friend's parents house, some 80 miles away... I was spending thanksgiving there when I got the NC. So yes, charging works from the computer, but as they said, it's slower. Not really a big deal though, I do this crazy thing at night called sleeping, during which I dont have much use for the NC, so it sits next to my bed, charging off of the laptop. And the cool thing is that it'll continue to charge even after my laptop goes into sleep mode.

the NC only has a 1530mah battery, which should not require 2A to charge. my samsung captivate has a 1500mah battery, and charges fine from USB. the NC should be able to charge from USB fine, but it's strange that it only does so very slowly.

You probably saw a replacement original nook battery. If you saw some of the teardown photos (mine), it's pretty obvious that this battery isn't user-replaceable. Ok, maybe my pictures aren't the best, but take my word for it. That block outlined in black in the fourth photo is the battery and is bigger than your entire captivate
A "Y" shaped USB cable with two male type "A" connectors that is plugged into two USB ports may charge the NC while avoiding the "Not Charging" message. However, since the overcharging / monitoring circuitry is external to the unit it may not be wise. It very well could decrease the lifespan of the battery and without the ability to easily replace it, I wouldn't try it myself.

[Q] Bad Charging Port. Anyone else had this?

Got an NC for Christmas and after reading all the awesome help on here got it rooted and set up the way I wanted it. So I plug it in night before last and it wont charge. Had to hold it at a certain angle then when I let go it would quit. I call B&N and they were gonna send me a cable. I said no the port is bad and I tried another usb cable and got the same result. So they are sending me another NC should be here tomorrow. I had barely 20% battery when I restored it to stock (which they told me to do before sending it back) or I would have been screwed. Anyone else had his problem? Also she told at first that another USB cable wouldn't work on it?? Anyone else use another cable or phone charger?
Thanks again for all the great info on here!!
All I know is that the mini-usb port on my NC -- where the charging cable plugs in -- is a mess. I have to insert the plug at a sharp angle and wiggle/force it, before it will go all the way into the port. (lame!)
On another note, the black plastic around the larger USB plug at the other end of the cable fell apart completely on the second day I had the NC. That end of the cable is now being held together by electrical tape. (even more lame!)
I'm considering an RMA for the entire unit to try my luck with a new one...
PS: performance wise, once rooted, this thing kicks total ass for $250!
Yeah, once mine is plugged in if I push the cable around it will stop charging.
I wonder if that Tear down gave us a reason for this?
After reading lots of posts over the past months it seems the port/plug is the most often reported problem .. I have two units and one (the first) is just fine, the other had difficulty with plug insertion but once inserted was fine. I tried the plug from #2 on #1 and yup, it was a problem to insert, so perhaps the B&N supplied cable is the problematic part, not the NC itself?
Saw that the EU has/will 'standardize' on the uUSB for charging .. personally don't understand ... it can't make that much difference in design/mfg and the miniUSB is very much more preferable to me .. sturdier it seems ... but it is what it is and I still love my NC!!!!

NC #1 that I got last Thursday had a fault USB port, as in I had a b!tch of a time getting the USB cable inserted, but managed it twice on Thursday for initial charge and a second time to try something sideloaded from Calibre. (Actually was about to return it as soon as I got it home and had trouble with the cable insertion until just as I was about to give up and pack it up, the cable went in...)
The next morning no amount of fiddling would allow me to insert the cable, so I factory reset and went back to the B&N for a horrid cs experience before they finally deigned to replace it. NC #2 the cable inserts MUCH more readily into...
Crossing fingers that nothing else goes wrong with #2. Ended up giving up on a pushed 1.01 update and sideloaded it last night, but first try was a phail, 2nd try went as expected. They need a user fw check and initiate fw update app as their OTA doesn't seem to be very robust or even work AFAICT.

Sounds like the charging port is a piece of crap. Still love the NC but I dread everytime I have to plug it in to charge it. Also when I plug it in to the computer or the wall the screen goes crazy and is virtually unusable. Read a few cases on here but no real explanation as to why.
As far as the update. Had to sideload it on both of the NC's i have had. Never would push it to it. Strange.

Does your screen act up when plugged in? Mine does either plugged in the wall or the computer. Just curious how many people have this issue??
I haven't returned mine. The cable that comes with it is difficult to insert, but if I fiddle with it, it goes in. I have a generic cable that I use to connect it to my PC and it charges it, too. It may be slower and doesn't indicate that it is charging, but if I leave it plugged in all night, it is fully charged in the morning.

You do realize the NC (and most phones) uses MicroUSB, right? And actually MicroUSB is rated for more insertions and is sturdier.
The reason the NC's cable is a PITA is because it's not a standard MicroUSB, it has extra pins on each side to deliver the 1.9A of current that the NC charges at.

I would not think so, in fact if that were the case I'd hope B&N would have had the jack not fit normal MicroUSB cables, but who knows.
Also B&N knows users aren't going to unplug the cable from their charger and plug it into their computer.. At least a reasonable number of users won't do this, although I might be the exception having a MiniUSB and MicroUSB dangling out from under my monitor for plugging in stuff
I've plugged mine into my computer numerous times, no problems so far. It does charge from any USB source, albeit slow.
On the new one. No.

Yep. #2 has that problem while #1 did not. I notice it on #2 as soon as I had gotten home and had it charging and was trying to do the setup/registration... It was an exercise in frustration...
I'm going to be letting #2 discharge today, then do a full charge and carefully track how much time I get off the charge since I've read a battery runtime thread on the B&N forums. (Very low backlight & WiFi off.) Might need to return #2 for battery problems as it seems very short to me although I have not been keeping careful track of how long I've been running between charges...

I have this problem. I believe this is caused by the AC adapter. I went to my local B&N and hooked up my nook to their charger and had no problems. I called B&N support and explained the problem to them. They said they would send me a new AC adapter which should have arrived yesterday. It hasn't arrived yet but I think that should fix the problem.
I also have a problem with having to insert the micro usb in at a funny angle, but once in it charges.

[Q] Recharge via Computer USB Port?

I got the 16GB Touchpad few days ago and since i got the one with an american charger i cant charge it yet (till i get the traveler kit).
My actual problem is that it doesn't charge through the USB port too. I left it for like 24-30 hours charging through the USB port (with the cable that came with the touchpad) and when i try to turn it on, it shows me an icon of an empty battery.
Is my usb cable problematic or it just that the touchpad cant charge through the usb port from a PC?
ps: every time i plug the usb it get a message telling "to reliably charge please use the charger and cable that came with this device"
I have the same issue with a 32 GB one. I received it brand new, factory sealed today and it is going back to HP. I called HP, the cable is fine, works with my HTC phone, it's the USB port on the Touchpad, it's loose and losses connection. HP is sending a box with prepaid shipping label and doing a warranty repair.
I really love the Touchpad and I am a bit disappointed with receiving a new device with a loose USB port. HP has great support and I can't wait until I get it back.

Unfortunately thats not an option for me (returning it to touchpad), since i bought it from Ebay (thats the only way possible for me to buy a touchpad from my country).

What sort of power source do you use, if not the charger.
I've tried to use a computer, but it does not look like it's charging, but data transfer work.
I tried with an iphone charger, that sort of work. It complains about not getting enough power (iphone charger is 5,0V while the hp charger is 5,2V)
Bottom line. Use the original charger, just buy an us adapter. It works great.
There is another thread here sonewere discussing chargers for non US owners.

Yes, tried the wall charger, then pc, a different usb cable, all had the same result. When I plugged in I could feel the USB port loose in the Touchpad itself, it had a bit of play and if I played gently on it, it would begin to charge or connect to the pc. When i let go, it disconnected from my pc and then gave me the charging error message. I purchased mine from an e bay store and it has a warranty for 1 year.
I would be happy to help you with yours, if you want to ship it to the US, it has a warranty from the factory. Pm me if you'd like help. I am certain that shipping to and.from US could be costly but I am willing to help.

Mine will only will charge from official HP chargers. This is much like my old iPhone 3g before all the generic manufacturers caught up. I suspect that the voltage and amp requirements are tighter than the USB specification, so it will be a crap shoot if you use non HP chargers.
With that said, HP has 30% off all touchpad accessories right now. Combine it with the cupon SAVE15HP

Don't worry over that, I can get what you need and ship it to you.
Also, in speaking to HP, any USB charger in the US works, they're considered universal.

you cant charge the touchpad using a computers usb ports. it doesnt draw enough power. the voltage of the charger doesnt really matter, it needs at least 2 amps or it wont charge the touchpad. cell phone chargers usually only draw 1 amp or less and usb ports only .5 amps.

That is absolutely not the case.
I have only charged mine once with the AC-USB thing and I have been using it since I got it the first day of the sale. I use mine all day long and only charge it occasionally via USB to PC connection. I use the original cable from HP and another one from my Samsung Mythic (work and home).
The message that you get when you plug it in is misleading but normal on a stock TP. However there is a patch in PreWare that changes it to just default to charge and not bug you. Anyone who intends to use this thing at all with WebOS needs to get PreWare installed. In fact, some time spent at precentral.net would benefit any new owners. You will learn A LOT more about these little jewels. I spent a few hours reading stickies and interesting threads and learned a great deal.
If it is really plugged in (and you will know because your PC will tell you) and you get no charge, you have a problem. It should charge on or off while plugged in - mine does.

Now to be completely honest - the first charge I made out of the box was with the AC adapter and I left it in overnight like I had been told.
But since then I have never used the AC plug and I have let it get down to about 20% or so but no lower.
It very well may be that from a DEAD state, it requires the extra amps to jump start it, but as long as you have that initial charge it is covered by the lower amperage of the direct USB-to-PC connection. I'm guessing it came with a fair charge and you burned through it without ever plugging it in to the USB.
Bear in mind that not ALL USB ports on a PC are powered the same either. Older USB 1.0 and 1.1 are crap for power. Front or top-mount ones also may not have as much juice as the ones in the back directly off the motherboard. Look at portable hard drives, some come with a double-header cable to use two low-powered ports. I know my top-mount ones will not power my 1TB 2.5-inch drive, but the ones in the back do.
However, I am really surprised you can't pick up a standard plug in USB adapter for your country for a few dollars (equivalent) for wall. Jeez they sell them at the dollar stores here now. I don't know if a car adapter would output enough to do it but that is another idea. If you can get one, you should be able to bring it back easily enough. The 2 amp adapter does charge a lot faster.

LOL, I am really in a rare mood as this question has bugged me a little. So I decided to find some straight poop. Here is the best description I have seen anywhere.
http://www.maxim-ic.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/3241
If you don't want to read it, the gist (as I understand it) is:
At 5V, the USB ports in a PC have to be able to source (provide) at least 500 mA (.5 AMP). However, depending on how your motherboard is provisioned (MOSFETs and diodes) that is limited/controlled.
The spec though, does allow as much as 5A to be provided. In fact, 2A is not uncommon if the other ports are not loaded.
So you could try unplugging all your other USB stuff or try another computer's USB ports.

Im trying to charge it through my PC using the original cable that was in the box (tried it in a USB 2.0 port) and im getting the 'try a reliable recharging source like the USB cable and the charger that came with your touchpad'.
I also tried charging it with a 5.0V 200mA phone charger but it didnt work either.
Shouldnt it charge even a bit with the cable? im trying to charge it for 2 days now

Given that the HP charger has a 2A output, odds are that anything much below around 500mA isn't going to charge the device, or at least not at a rate that'll offset the drain while it's running.
The USB ports on laptops often won't supply enough current, particularly if there's other devices on the same bus. If you plug it into a powered USB hub then you should be in business as they should supply more like around 1A generally.
My Touchpad charges from my laptop USB port, however it is slow. I am getting about 8 - 10% charge per hour. The screen needs to be off though, otherwise there is no noticable charging happening.
Mine is not charging with USB laptop at all. Need to use wall charger
I have XRON VB2.8 on my two touchpads and both show battery charging symbol when they are connected to computer via USB and yes the they charge very slow.
FYI, can't remember if WebOS / Govnah tells you what the current amps being used is, but if you are on Android tools like Elixir 2 tell you how many amps you are either discharging (-) or charging (+). So depending on what you are using (wifi, bluetooth, # of widgets, running applications, screen brightness, overclocking, underclocking, etc.) YMMV on whether or not you can charge via usb connected to your computer.
So if you are discharging at a rate of -750 mA connecting to a usb port on your computer will still have you discharging at a rate of -250:
Code:
[COLOR="Red"]-750 mA[/COLOR] + 500 mA = [COLOR="Red"]-250 mA[/COLOR]
mine charges in the usb port, but only if I turn off the screen or turn off the touchpad completely. my ports only provide 500mA, and with the screen off, the touchpad draws about 50mA, so it can charge at about 450mA. With the screen on, it draws about 760mA, so even when it's plugged in the USB, it is discharging at a rate of about (760-500=260mA).

(Q) I need some help please

So my cousin gave me his HP TouchPad to fix because it didnt boot up, he had gotten it from someone and it worked for a while as he stated but than it died and now it woulndt turn on. It's a 16bg i believe and i have searched the forums so i did try a few tricks. When i hold the power button it gives me the low battery and right after it, the white connect to power logo. It shuts off afterwards. When i connected to the computer straight away, it gives the low battery and says to charge reliably use the original cables and so fort, then it shuts off. Anyone can help me with this please?
Thank You
did you try to charge it with the original charger?
Bad charging cables are known to cause this problem.
Well I have the USB cable it came with but not the wall charger. Tried cables from my galaxy s 4g, blackberry and few other cables that fit it. Nothing. Tried apple wall charger and Samsung wall charger still nothing. U know where I can buy the originals for it?

You need that hp charger or one that puts outt the same juice 5.3v=2.0A it wont charge on the computers usb port.
It will charge with a 1 amp charger(iPhone;htc wall usb) albeit slowly.
Definately test another cable, find the highest rated USB charger you can, ????, profit!
Well thanks for the replies. I just got home from work and it was connected to the usb port all day, now i took my iphone chargers end and connected it into the power strip and connected the usb. Any idea where i can find the originals or ones that work for this touchpad. When ever power connects to it, low battery comes up showing little bit left with red and it says connect originals if u want the most reliable charging..
