Is SGS still a goer? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im new (ish) to this forum and currently looking for an upgrade from my Hero. Tbh if I didnt have to renew my contract I would be quite happy to keep it for another 18 months. So, I've been reading lots on this big ongoing debates about Desire vs SGS vs DHD..
I thought the SGS was going to be a win for me even with the GPS, Wifi, etc etc issues, imo they are considered as minor issues since its only software related (you pro developers will find a way around it one way or other! )
...Until a found this thread:
'AMOLED burn in' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892498
So I suppose my question is, knowing what you know now before you bought the phone. Would you SGS users still want to buy this instead of the other two mentioned above?
Is the SGS with the rate of led degradation that much better than the Desire or the DHD? Of course if you do change your phone often thats not an issue for you so please bare that in mind not everyone is as lucky as you .

Depends on the needs of the person buying the phone - if you use your GPS daily I'd recommend waiting for a better device or getting the DHD. Otherwise I'd go with the SGS.
With the plethora of Tegra 2 devices coming in the next few months I'd suggest waiting.

Unless the most important thing is gaming i would suggest the desire HD. Its all round faster, especially if your not into "hacking" your phone.
The screen of the sgs does in fact "burn in". I have some on my screen, If i knew about it before i would have tried using different orientations.
The galaxy s also has very little ram when compared to the desire hd, and it actually does make a big difference when it comes to performance in general.
The the thing galaxy s has going for it is that its sold a lot, and the community is pretty great, but if you want something that simply just works get the desire Hd or even better wait for a few months and get a dual-core.

To the degradation. It should be same on all amoleds. Its not the phone. Its the display causing that. So what ever you do. You might be better of with an SLCD.
Desire and DHD I think some of them are Amoled too. So it will be there too.
Btw the burn in, I still didnt see a picture of it. And I am afraid of checking my phone. Seriously. Now I am "not" knowing if its burned in. Once I check I would have to bring it in for repairs and I HATE THAT! (And there is the fact I am not running official stock)
What I dont like is the pentile matrix from these Super Amoleds. The resolution is too weak and small fonts are fading. Not readable. Missing pixels. Dunno how to explain more. Its not smooth. This should be fixed by the next gen Super Amoled +
So even if the BURN IN might or might not (its just a matter of time ) the pentile matrix is there always and the display even if nice colors and contrast lacks on sharpness. Good for movies, games, bad for a business man with reader/calendar/news/agenda, things that burn in and need to be good readable

Couldn't agree more. The very visible matrix is the main issue I have with this screen.

If I knew then what I know now(about the phone. don't get me started on the provider...), I would still have bought the phone then. I'm quite happy with the phone, and I'm going to keep it(and use it ofcourse) for a "long" time. However, given that "4G" LTE phones aren't far off, and that dual cores aren't far off, and that Super Amoled+ isn't far off, and that.... If I was thinking of buying a new phone now, I would wait for a few months and get one that's more "future proof".

There is no such thing... And never will be. Look there are new phones with Tegra 2 and they are announcing Tegra 3.
Doesn't matter when you buy it. You can either buy an expensive new one. Or an older good one for cheaper.
(or wait a month for the ones you want, then a half year for a good ROM + software and there we go with a new phone and it begins again)
The time from producing a new phone and technology isn't years anymore, its months (sometimes just weeks) . Waiting in this case is for hours/days. To wait more then 2 weeks is nonsense (and that only if you really want the phone)

oh,i dont agree it,i think very visible matrix is not a big problem,if try to change your font,im sure u will find it change a lot

oh, I dont agree.
I bought 4 fonts (well more but others refunded till I still could in the good old 24h days), tried out 20, downloaded custom 20. Changed DPI. Bold. Etc. Fact is. My hero with 120 DPI (normal 160) is better readable then the SGS on 240.
When I try to read mails I get from partners, even this forum. Etc. I still cant see it clearly. Even if readable its still "ugly" . I saw an LCD (xperia, desire and the hero) and I just can cry for a screen like that
I said its pretty for movies or games, there ofc you wont notice it.

Audio stream when recording a video even at 720p is crap. I tried shooting a few the other day of my floorstanding speakers playing FLAC stuff, obviously im not expecting mirrored performance but after examining the video file generated by the phone on my computer, the bit rate was around 62kbps @ 32KHz sampling rate.
Audio playback is ok, nothing special, no way near the quality of an iphone4 which my sibling enjoys daily.
And yes the crap resolution where the individual pixels are visible is a HUGE turn off! I was expecting it to be much more smooth, almost fluid like, as is the iph4 display. However, colour reproduction on the SGS is phenomenal, rich and vibrant.
Id say check both phones out in person, see for yourself. SGS has a strong community, 10 mill units sold. Then again id say wait until the newer handsets with tegra 2 are out. In saying that though i suppose you'll be forever waiting. Dont rush for a handset thats still in its infancy. Wait till you know what bugs and drawbacks it suffers from first. NO device is perfect, even in the 21st century!
Too much technology packed into one unit without fully understanding how individual processes function not to mention varied performance when coupled with other technologies.

ok,i agree that the super amoled readable is worse than lcd,but i think it not too bad to accept, and when reading pictures or movies,it is wonderful,in a word ,it is much better than lcd,you know after desire change it‘s screen,it become much cheaper than before,
and i think Accor black for apple is a good font

Not gonna deny it, it's a tough choice. I've had my SGS for about 4 months now, and I'm extremely tempted to get it swapped with a HTC Desire Z/G2. I don't trust Samsung when it comes to software anymore (Kies is terrible, updates are postponed and I HIGHLY doubt we'll ever see gingerbread) and the developer support for Samsung devices just isn't there. This, plus my GPS performance is still mediocre at best, it's completely failed about 4 or 5 times including once where the internal SD nearly died.
Granted, some of this could change with the Nexus S, but I doubt it'll change much. We may get better developer support but past that I don't see anything else happening. You also just might want to wait a little bit more and get a 4G LTE phone. Don't expect to be "future-proof" though, that's impossible.

[Q] Samsung galaxy S I9000 Stock Android!!

Hello fellow Xda'ers! I have recently Sold my htc hd2 and I have decided to buy an Galaxy S I9000!!
Do you think this is a smart trade since i LOVE ANDROID, is there another device you could recommend?
Even if so,
Does anyone here know how to, or IF I can use Standard STock Android 2.1 OR 2.2
doesnt matter, I just want it to be Android stock...
Thanks and Please
Sincerely yours Aldin!
yes there are beta version of froyo already JF3
Currently can't use stock (but there is no reason why someone couldn't port get a fully stock rom working). A lot of us like this phone, some people don't. Some people prefer the Desire.
Current main problems people are having.
1) GPS is sketchy, but it does appear Samsung is fixing it. It is a good chipset (and the solution may be that they release a new backplate with a better antenna, because there is a jack for an external antenna). Or, it may be improved drivers. As of JM5, I have quickly tested mine and it is great, but haven't tested it properly yet.
2) "Lag". Some people are whinging that applications take too long to load, and some tasks lag. We KNOW the processor is awesome though, and we KNOW that the NAND chip is fast, so it's probably a configuration/software issue. Perhaps they simply need better caching in place. Also be aware, many people here are blowing the lag WAYYY out of proportion. Some people here will tell you their applications are lagging 10 secs, and that the lag killed their cat.
In JM5 and JG5, I tested it, and I could only get 3 secs lag max after running many apps. I later managed to increase that to perhaps 4. But later firmwares now seem to be quite immune to serious lag problems.
When it comes down to it though, your only way of knowing for sure whether it's the right phone for you, is to test them both.
However, you must be honest with yourself too. Anything to do with graphics is probably better on the Galaxy S (and the firmware is much more buggy still). But the HTC has a better experience at the moment. The Galaxy S also has a better screen, and a PROPER multitouch atmel controller, whereas most mobiles (including the nexus one) still use a hacked synaptics/single touch panel which can support multitouch (but doesn't actually do it properly, and it's easy to generate false ).
I wouldn't trade my Samsung Galaxy S though, even if I was offered full asking price. It really comes down to your needs. The Samsung might be the better long term solution (especially since Samsung are REALLY pushing it, which suggests they are serious about turning it mainstream), but the desire might be the better short term one.
It all comes down to your needs though, and patience. If you need fully accurate GPS right now, or are too impatient to wait 1 sec for an app to open, get the HTC desire. But, if you want a proper multitouch controller, MUCH faster GPU and better screen, Samsung Galaxy. At the end of the day, they are just mobile phones, you just need to go for it! I spent months wasting hours looking up reviews every week, and at the end, I just did it on a whim (had never even seen it in real life). The fact is, in actual real world use, the HTC desire is possibly a bit better for some people if they need accurate GPS for fitness and such (but ours will probably improve too with a bit of software improvements, or a new back case with a better antenna). Both have 802.11n, so you'll find that you can set your router to 802.11n mode only.
It's just a phone though. If you need a fashion accessory, the HTC legend might appeal to you. But as mentioned, what you need is everything.
Also, some people may complain about the build quality of the galaxy S (it uses a plastic back which snaps on). I'd say the build quality is fine (materials which are used doesn't mean a damn if your smartphone gets wet). In fact, I actually think its a pro point, because we can swap the back with a rubberdised one and simply get a screen protector/bumper. But yeah, nothing to worry about. The glass seems strong too.
Good luck.

Thanks so much for the quick answer!!! I have decided to get the galaxy s i9000!! Thank you so much for spending so much time writing and what a good page of information you gave me!! THANKS!
I confess I don't know so much about this, but what do you get if you compile the Eclair source released by Samsung (I assume it needs to be combined with AOSP)? Would that not give stock 2.1, since none of the TouchWiz apps are open source?
Perhaps a few drivers would be missing as they're only available as binaries, but we do have the binaries.

10 seconds of lagg is not exaggerated. I even experienced a longer lagg.
Let''s say the lagg is only 4 seconds. I is annoying as hell if you you experience that 4 second lagg every 15 seconds while using your phone.
Ofcourse this all depends on what and how many applications you installed and are running.
Guys.. this is really the wrong forum.. This is Android development not Questions & Answers!
Please post your threads in the right sections!
When you have lags you can just use same lag fix... I don't know why you all complaining on lags when lag fixes makes this phone really fast. Othervise if you don't want to lose warranty than if you have enouth money take desire
Moved thread to Q&A

Finally got another phone. So much happier.

I finally had enough and jumped ship. I got what I originally wanted but was too impatient to wait, the Galaxy Skyrocket. I had to dish out full price (used) but it's worth it. The amount of frustration using the Thrill was far outweighing the cost of just getting a new phone. i've found that the only thing that made the Thrill bearable was by flashing CM7 but then you lose any benefit of having it to begin with (3d).
FTR, I had flashed GB O3D rom on this phone and used that for the past 3 months or so prior to finally flashing CM7 and losing the 3d.
The 3d isn't worth the disadvantages of having this phone after all and I wish I had listened to others from the beginning. Even with CM7, the phone is nowhere near as snappy and productive as the STOCK bloated rom on the Samsung Galaxy S2 phones. Prior to having the Skyrocket, I didn't quite understand what the advantage would be, if you compared specs to specs. Apparently there is something else other than hardware specs that makes one android phone simply better than the other hands down. Sorry for the rant, but I am posting this in case others who have been putting up with their Thrill have been on the fence and don't know what they're missing. I bought the Thrill 1 week prior to its release date and have been a trooper putting up with it until this week. I'm so glad to be done with it, it's now sitting in my junk drawer. Good riddance!
Not trying to be rude, but it'd be nice if useless clutter such as this was not posted.
It's completely irrelevant.
i dont know why ppl hate this phone so much i love it after rooting it and putting a custom rom on it rocks the house have no problems with missed calls or sms's np gettting a full day out of the battery now that were off froyo my buddy at work has an sg2 and my phone is just as fast as his phone.
I do not know why people are complaining about this phone either... I have put the thriller rom on it and the battery is lasting for almost 2 full days now... I still have my 3D (which if you ask me is much nicer in theory than it is in actuality.) and rarely use it... You people that are complaining about it as you are, are just too damn picky... Lighten up and enjoy the phone for what it can do. Dont just jump on the "oh i cant upgrade to GB so its shyt" bandwagon...
We're complaining because some of us (myself) ditched the iPhone for a more "open" platform that we wouldn't have to worry about hacking as much so we could do stuff that a phone should do without jailbreaking. I was always doing stuff to my iPhone to the point where it was very unstable an I just wanted to go legit. So I got an Android, now the only way to get anything out of it is to mod and hack again, which bumps you right back into that "sketchy" territory. I'm glad roms and hacks work for you but there are cons to those pro's as well. I've spent far to much time flashing KDZ's on this phone trying to get it functional. Not a single GB worked for me and I tried them all. I always had ghost calls. I've been considering the SGSII so I'm glad to hear it's as good as I think/hope it is.
Update: to further reply to your "I don't know why your complaining" comment about "being too damn picky" All I want is for my phone to last 1 day and not miss any phone calls. Oh, and not freeze in the middle of a game or app. On froyo my battery life is ****e and there is tons of freezing. On GB I miss calls and texts on a regular basis. Now tell me I'm being picky.
I don't think it's the case of being too picky, it's the quality of the phone and the company that gets people. Think about it LG knew the battery life of these phone would be shytty while testing it but they still released it.... plus to my understanding their updating progress is way to long of a wait for such a powerful phone, by the time we "may" get an ICS update jellybean will be out (I think) As for my experience with thrill my only issue was the battery life (which I took care of) other than that I love my phone and very satisfied with it

I used one of my upgrades to get a galaxy note. Stock for stock the thrill was almost as fAst as it and scored much better on fps in graphics tests. I've oc'd the note now and the thrill doesn't come close. I could see the thrill being just as quick oc'd and tweaked. And, the thrill plays more games without having to do any tweaking. Don't get me wrong, i gave the thrill to my son and will probably never go back to the thrill only because of the screen size and lte. Though i did give the son strict orders to take care of it as i want it back when he finally upgrades.

I just finished putting thiaz03d 2.6 with 1158 oc kernel .4 and stripping it down to the apps that I use and man this phone is blazing fast did a antutu benchmark and scored 6538 witch is higher then a stock sg2 so I'm very happy with this phone now it just flys.
Posts like this crack me up, hence my screen name haha. I love this phone. It's got an awesome screen, super fast dual core processor and a high quality feel to the build. All the samsung phones just feel like they're made out of toy plastic. I'm also glad LG doesn't try to overwhelm us with an over-the-top Android overlay such as Sense, TouchWiz, MotoBlur, etc. I replaced the stock launcher with launcher pro as soon as I got it and it got much better battery life. LG Home is a battery sucker and a resource hog. I like the widgets they provided with it too, they're really classy and useful. For a phone with only 512 MB of RAM, I usually manage to get around 200 MB of RAM free when I'm not running anything. Try asking someone with a Captivate how much of their memory they can get free (usually about 100 MB or less), they'll be shocked when you say you can get that. I think the people who complain are too unfamiliar with the Android operating system and its customizability and were just looking for something that works without any tweaking. If you want something like that, just get an iphone. And I'm not knocking that at all, Apple only builds one phone for a reason, so they can concentrate on it and make it work flawlessly despite any perceived hardware shortcomings. But I'm glad I chose my Thrill so I can make it do what I want it to do, and it does. And nothing beat the price point this thing was at back in September.

i havent had any problems with lg support there always straight up with me told me when were getting ics when i asked and also to the guy above you i get 200 to 250mb free when i close all my apps so i cant complain at all
i know some ppl have this ghost call thing but you ever think its your carrier and not lg ive used all the roms that claim to have gc probs and i never had any.
I eligible to upgrade and a white galaxy note is what I might get depending on how long at&fee decides to update to ics. Along with that a lag fix and price drop.
I never get more than 100 ram free unless I just stopped playing a heavy game and that's only for a few seconds before everything launches again. What in the world are you doing to get 200 free?
Are you using the stock launcher or a (better) one from the market? I use launcher pro, and it uses much less resources from what I can tell. Whenever I tried going back to LG Home, I noticed there was so much less free memory in the app manager. Actually right now I only have about 76 MB free, but that's because I let Gmail, Go SMS Pro, Opera Mobile, Pandora, and the finance app stay in there because I use them all the time. If I clear them out I'll be over 160 MB and in the green easy.
well i have thiaz03d rom 2.6 and it has lgs newest launcher then i used that post in the 03d forum to remove all the apps that im not using and froze every thing that i didnt want to delete that i dont us i pertty much striped my phone right down and install only the files for my phone and apps i use to run. o and hardly any thing runs in the back ground.

The phone is what you make of it. All smartphones are. if you dont like battery life, find the culprit and eliminate it. If you dont like stock, root it. If you dont like something you have acquired because you didnt do your homework dont whine about it in a place where people are trying to make the best of what they have chosen. Keep your mouth shut and move on. Dont like the phone, go write a review on cnet.

Don't defend LG till they fix the phone
Firstly everyone who doesn’t get ghost calls, are you shore? have you checked, I am only saying this since it is hard to tell, I didn’t think I wasn’t getting any until lots of people started saying that I never answer my phone, and when I started testing it guess what to my surprise I was getting them, and it’s so random that it might happen only 1 out of 20 or even 1 out of 50 but since it is random when it happens you never know, I once was testing it I called 6 times in a row and it was 6 out of 6 ghost calls, and the thing with ghost calls they don’t go to the answering machine they don’t leave missed call notifications and it’s the same with text msg's there is no trace of them at all, and for the people that are calling you they just think you are being rude by not answering or never returning their calls not to mention missing important business calls, so I know when some people say I never get them well for all you know you have and never realised it, and how can anyone defend LG's O3D/Thrill when they have such a serious issue and still haven’t fixed it, not to mention people who get the error "reorganizing internal processes" when trying to call out which I have had in the past, what if you are in an emergency and you need to call but all you get in "reorganizing internal processes" and then you have to wait for the phone to fix itself or restart it, and we all know how long the O3D/Thrill takes to start up don’t we, or you go to make a call and have no reception and have to restart the phone, or have you forgetting the main purpose of a mobile = calling and communication....

It's not that we don't like the post.
It's that it is completely useless and serves as clutter.
This isn't a general section for ALL android phones.
It's the general section for the LG Thrill. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Understand?

What to go for?

Now i have the lg optimus 2x but I'm not happy with it. I change roms once at week, many times I have to reinstall all the apps and restore stuff from backups. I decided that I'm not happy with it and I decided to go on and change the lg phone.
I want to say thanks to all the developers that made this damned phone a little better and helped a lot with it.
Max budget is 1000euro so I think that most of the android phones are inside the budget. What do you think is the best choice on the market right now?
What I am looking at the moment in a phone is:
At least 12 hours battery with medium wifi use, always enabled data connection and like 30 minute calls during the day;
I want it to be fluid and fast, I don't want to experience freeze because I'm out of ram;
I would like a good camera, I really like taking pictures and making videos but lets say that the camera quality from the o2x really dissapointed me, the video quality was really too low to be considered hd;
The display max size I think that about 5" is enough and I want to be able to use it in the sunlight without problems;
Well, that's it. What do you guys suggest me? Which phone would be your choice? There are many models on the market right now apparently with similar hardware but which one you think is the best to do what I want to do? You think I should wait and see what the Galaxy s3 will offer or you think that it cannot offer more than the others are offering right now?
Please, don't suggest me to buy an LG, I don't even want to think about it
Thank you for your help!
If I had a 1000 euro budget for a phone I would buy an LG and save the other 700 eur for... I don't know... condoms?
Now, seriously, best of luck to you.
I wonder if this is also a case for PG "the thread closer" 101.
I really have no idea what to think of. With so many phones everyday I am a bit confused!!!
If you really want a beast phone, go for the HTC One X. Quad-core and great performance. Also the dev support for the HTC is quite good. But, you need to wait, I don't think it's released yet...
I say wait for Galaxy S III or Lg Optimus 4x HD.
Not a HTC fan but ONE X is one great phone.

One day i read a person's comment on a post(similar to this one - started by me) that no one and nothing is perfect - if they have got a problem or two, learn to live with them, adjustment- a machine can't, but you can....
IMO- there is no need to get a quad core or huge screen or better camera coz one day or other they will get old.Don't get me wrong - i dont suggest to use a nokia 1110, change but only if necessary.....
But still coz you need suggestions, i will suggest nothing other than galaxy note- easily gives 18hrs+ usage if used extensively
And best of luck for your choice

my confession...

hi all,
this is my first full post here on xda... i have been a member for a few years now and thought i should write something the community may agree/dispute/love/hate
and so...
here it is...
i have titled this my confession as basically it is a confession... its something i have put off for quite some time now...
i am a major windows mobile fan... from way back when with my o2 xda to my hd2... i love it and everything about it... its a faithful, hardworking, do it all mobile os... i had touchscreen phones and pda's long before the touchscreen hype came in... back when my friends still had the nokia hype, with changable cases and envious battery life... anything they could do, i could do better... just for the 6 or so hours my battery gave me... then devices evolved (slowly at first) o2 xda ii then some more...mda vario... htc elf (touch) then a blackberry (never again!!!!) had that for a very short time... then got myself a tytn ii... windows mobile with real power... filled it with spb software... had android running from sd... was my first real do it all phone...
then time and age became an issue... my hardware was restricting me... software can only go so far... so the time came for an upgrade... in steps the amazing 4.3" multi touch, capacative, 1ghz powerhouse that is the hd2... running the latest and greatest version of windows mobile with a sexy sense ui draped over the top...
soon as it was released here in england i was at my local phone shop and signing up to an 18 month contract...
soon after this, a nice hspl came along which meant 1 thing to me, and 1 thing only... custom rom goodness... oh, i went through every rom imaginable... (i believe the term for this is ord or obsessive rom-flashing disorder)
i finally settled on energy roms... loved the speed, looks and the sheer number of different flavours nrgz28 offered...
then shock horror... i dropped my hd2 and smashed the digitizer... a job i would usually do myself but after the cost of the screen (£100) and what a local phone shop quoted me (£120) i decided to let them deal with the annoying job...
BIG MISTAKE!!!! basically ruined the ribbon for my volume keys and lost the glass that makes the proximity and light sensors work... they had it for about 2months... and so after a big row with them i had half my money refunded and my fone returned with a new screen but still a little sick... broken hd2 of ebay was the answer as during this time the first windows phone software was ready and waiting for my approval... so phone fixed, wp7 flashed the end....
or not... after a few minutes with wp7 i noticed simple features were missing... like copy/paste... i was unable to download any media onto my device... a big disappointment... what ever happened to microsoft??? took a beautiful thing and just destroyed it... why try and be like the iphone when waht u had was so much better...
tutt tutt...
now... down to the confession... after this utter shock from windows i decided to try android out... had it running from sd for quite some time, but thought its time to try nand and reap the benefits... so away i go... first a galaxy s rom... pretty impressive, but still lacking that spark... then a few newer builds and versions surfaced... had the desire hd rom... was nice... then i got a whiff of gingerbread goodness... started really liking the leaps and bounds the still young os was offering... then on... 2.3... 2.3.3... 2.3.5... ect... each time getting a little better... the finally ics...
ics hit the hd2 like an ice cream hitting a sensative tooth... bang! on it went and wow... im really impressed... feels like this is what wp7 should have been...
it stank of winmo customizability... ate up everything i did to it and seemed like this is how its meant to be...
android on my hd2 felt so right but also so wrong... whats going on?? im singing the praises of a winmo competitor... whats happened to me?? am i sick?? have i hit my head?? i really cant place my finger on it...
so my confession is this secret love affair i have had with android... cheating on winmo for so long... so i have decided to come clean... cant keep this cherade up any longer...
sorry winmo, i do, and always will love u... we had many brilliant times together... ones i will always remember... its not you, its me... i have met someone else and she makes me happy now... so im going to admit this now and confirm its over between us... im so so so truly very sorry...
i hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me and we can still be friends... u have influenced me and made me who i am today and 4 that i thank you
so... heres the start of not having to hide my new love... 1 i hope will last forever...
....So i bet your thinking "why did i just sit and read this crap??" its coz maybe secretly u have the same love affair? or u were actually hoping to find out some real murderers confession? or your just bored? whatever the reason, u now know where my heart lies...
maybe its time for u all to think where exactly ur heart lies...
food for thought...
thanks for reading

I've only been an Android guy. Today I went and played with some WinMo 8 devices and was impressed by the general UI and the screen clarity. That was about it though... the OS was hard to navigate and I got lost in it a few times... didn't like the Carl Zeiss on the Lumia 900 either...
So, I will be getting either the next Nexus or the Galaxy Nexus, depending on if the new one is out... And as you said ICS is a beautiful thing!!!
I want to rip the camera sensor off of the Pureview 808 (runs Belle) and slap it on Android.

There's no winmo 8 or even windows phone 8 yet.
As a whole, ICS feels like the same stuttery unintuitive mess I got from all other android builds, but I guess if winmo was your bag you grow accustomed to sacrificing performance and usability for a more feature enriched ecosystem.

well if all android builds are stuttery unintuitive mess's then u maybe need to try another device... my hd2 runs android like a dream... if i didnt know better, it could be the native os...
im unaware of what performance and usability im sacrificing... as my phone performs just as quick if not quicker than winmo ever did... even with energyroms... boot time is quicker... battery life is better... its a more finger friendly os than winmo...
i see ur a windows fan still... each to their own... as a whole, iv never rated nokia as a manufacturer of high end devices, but their deal with microsoft was the best thing they could have ever done... meego, symbian and the other crap they used to ship their devices with was a joke...

the ui (metro) can be downloaded from google play for free if u like the ui... screen clarity is down to the device really... wp7 is quick but really lacks any kind of spark for me... and coming from winmo, i really wanted to love wp7 but i just dont...
as for an upgrade id always suggest htc... kies for the samsung devices is the worst piece of software ever written... and theres just something about sony ericsson devices that feels cheap to me... if memory serves (which it probabily dont) the first nexus was made by htc... a few of them were made by samsung... dont hold me to that
You can't download the UI, you can download a cheap, laggy imitation that almost drove me from wp7 initially because I thought that was all it was. You don't sacrifice speed or stability from winmo to android because they're both stuttery and unstable. Winmo felt like a beta OS, android continued on that beta. Wp7 feels like something more solid and complete in comparison.

launcher 7's not laggy, lol. It is somewhat limited atm, but live tiles are coming very soon.
In comparison to the real deal, it's laggy. Android simply isn't built to be smooth. Honestly, winmo is better built, had they improved the UI, worked on the hardware, and built a viable marketplace, they'd have Android's spot. Unfortunately, Bill Gates wanted a mobile version of windows... He was the only one.

Like this water flowing over a leaf is laggier than that water flowing over a leaf, I'm sure.
No, android stutters due to a number of factors. Windows Phone takes measures to prevent such things. Launcher 7 is disappointing, it almost drove me from windows phone before I'd tried it because I installed it and thought, "So this is all WP7 is? Boring." Then I got a cheap HD7, even that tired old device blew away anything else on the market in terms of fluidity and speed.

WP is indeed more than what Launcher 7 is.. but not by much, and the gap gets smaller everyday.
Ok, I'll make a small confession too then, shall I?
To be honest WP7 looks like a very well designed and consistent OS to me, but as any other it has its own bugs. Sure it's quite stable, especially compared to Gingerbread, but it's no Swiss watch by any mean. For example, people criticise Android because of force closes, but honestly WP7 isn't very different: at times you tap on some app and you get kicked back to your home screen, and you can't fix it without rebooting the phone or even reinstalling the app from scratch, eventally losing all of your settings. Sure you don't get the "force close" message, but this actually IS a force close. Talking about lag, I can't really say that WP7 is as consistent as some tend to describe it. Sure I'm insanely fast at typing, but at times the input is delayed, and in many situations the ICS keyboard on my SGS2 was generally faster and more fluid.
This said, I like the idea of WP7 a LOT. I love the design of every single thing, everything has been made with very good taste and always keeping the focus on user experience. I've been using WP7 for about 5 months now, and honestly I wouldn't go back. I think that WP7 is really close to perfect as a PHONE OS (for my perosnal taste at least), because let's face it: first of all a phone should be something you use for keeping in touch, doing some light browsing/tweeting and enjoying some media content on the go. Some people say that Android has more features and is generally better for so called "power users". I used to think that too, but honestly, growing up a little and actually starting to have a real life and some sort of job I came to think that phones in general are not really meant for power users. Now I know I'm on XDA, right? Don't kill me please, just let me explain. A phone has some really annoying features: small battery, small screen (yes, they generally are small, and good luck carrying a Note without cargo pants, or either operate it with one hand), and last but not least, people can always call/text/mail you when your doing your ****s. For a REAL power user this should be annoying, right? For me the best solution would be carrying an Android tablet and a WP7 device, so you can have a good and reliable communication device, fast and easy to use, AND a tablet for doing the real business as a real laptop replacement, or even just for tinkering, trying ROMs, gaming and all that jazz. A tablet has a huge battery, a very enjoyable screen and when you're using it people can still reach you on your phone without bothering you too much.
This summer I'll be definitely getting a good 10" slate with ICS on board, but I guess I won't be using it anymore as a phone OS. WP7 is my ideal phone OS: it's reliable, good looking and easy to use, and it helps me keeping focused on what really matters in my life: work, sports, friends and girls. An Android PHONE is probably too much for me, I'm too easily distracted. Now this is my very personal story, and my very personal preferences. Everyone should be enjoying his phone (and his life of course), hating is pointless. Peace out
i bet my "tired old hd2" will out perform your young, perky NOKIA... and i reckon it wont just be the hardware that makes the difference... u must have had some really bad versions of android because iv not had 1 laggy, slow or memory hungry version... and i have NEVER owned an android phone...
android supports 3d which no other platform has... supports quad core... wp7 cant yet support dual core... windows has been around since the dinosaurs and STILL lacks a decent marketplace...
android over wp7 any day...

Android actually is a really good all around platform. I guess it's the best pick for many, if not most people these days: you can get it on any sort of device at any price. Also, not everybody can afford both a phone and a tablet, and Android is definitely the best all arounder. Also, the fact that it tends to look familiar to previous Symbian, iOS, BBOS and even WM users makes it appeal to many. Anyway I always hope that every single platform out there manages to survive and succeed at some extent, without some tough competitors Android would become stale in a few years like Symbian and BBOS. Actually the fact that it doesn't belong to a single OEM is a big boost for the platform as a whole already. Future still looks very bright for the green robot IMHO.
I didn't recognize android lag until I used something more stable either. Now it's painfully apparent. Jumping from winmo to android would have to feel like an improvement because winmo was just generally bad. I mean, in it's time it was ok at best. It had it's MMOs and stuff but never got past the point where you felt you needed a stylus in some places. It was always a PPC OS and never a smartphone OS. Android is a continuation on this, and while it's remedied most of the issues, lag and stability are not one of them. Perhaps I push my android phones harder with games like Dungeon Defenders and such, but I had to reset my gs2 daily for the week I had it. My Nokia Lumia 800 has been reset seven times total since last October. It's just more stable and more social.
Vnvman, what apps do you have such issues with? The only app that's caused me to have to reset is board express which is a poorly done app. At least it's not the built in apps though like with android.
Again, maybe I push my phone more. However, my measly 1.4 GHz processor runs circles around the gs2 I had long enough to ditch it. That would be the same GS2 that is said to be the first android phone that utilized a partially GPU accelerated UI.
The last app I had issues with was Carbon, just a week ago. It kinda surprised me because it always worked pretty good. I had to reinstall it in order to make it work again. Oh, and yesterday my gf had some issues on her 710, she had some stupid game like Shoot Bubble unable to launch, reinstalling it did the trick.
Honestly these things don't really bother me (it doesn't happen often), what actually made me wanna throw my phone off the window the other day was 3g connectivity, which wasn't working no matter what. After 24 hours it started working again, apparently without a reason. Funny thing is that my gf was having this issue at the same time, but none of my friends with the same carrier had it. Really weird.
Hmm, perhaps it pertained to your account with the phone company? A glitch in the system of sorts. I don't use carbon, not certain what it is, and stick mostly on the beaten path for games. Perhaps that's why I don't have that issue. The stock stuff covers most of what I need in a phone.
Carbon is a Twitter client, it's pretty good, you should try it if you haven't already. It's well designed and melts beautifully in the OS. I'm not a great fan of the integrated client we have, it's definitely usable but a little limited, and the official twitter app hurts my eye (and my battery) with all that stupid white...

[Q] Should I get this phone as an upgrade?

Sorry if threads like this are not allowed or if I'm posting in the wrong section...
I need some opinions here. I am coming from a Galaxy Wonder and I would like an upgrade. Have currently earmarked this device on top of my wishlist. I would like to know if this phone's tech is able to last around 2-3 years.
I'm particularly concerned about the 1 GB RAM this phone has. Is 1 GB enough?
Thanks in advance guys.

1GB is more than enough in most phones, I've never had RAM management problems with this one.
However, my answer is a big NO.
Let me elaborate;
>Battery life
With proper greenifying, wakelock detecting, and no more than 2% per 12h of battery discharge, it has a decent battery life, but it seems the screen and the tegra 3 chip draw a lot of power from it. An extended battery does fix that though, but don't expect more than 3h of screentime on a normal usage day and 60-70% brightness, on a normal battery.
>Stock ROM
Looks great, feels great, kernel is easily updated (if you got the bootloader unlocked, flash another one), and then works great too. This phone, in my opinion is meant to be the LG Optimus G's younger brother. I've tried a lot of custom roms, but stock is the one that takes it away from me, after properly kdz flashed (without the bloat apps and stuff).
>Heating issues
10 mins of playing, well, pretty much anything that's 3D makes the phone really hot, no thermal throttling though, but don't expect this phone to last if you play an hour of gaming or more. Even Subway Surf kills the battery.
>Tegra 3 incompatibility/unoptimized apps
Most games are made with Adreno in mind, needless to say, Adreno is not better than the T3, just has more optimizations done for it. Also some apps aren't available via the Play Store on this phone, but that can vary depending on your region.
In my opinion, I'd always go with an SGS3, even with stock touch wiz and bloat, because
a) it gets proper software updates, unlike LG and all of their devices, not just the 4X HD.
b) better modding support/community
c) apparently heats up a lot less and lasts a lot more, that also means given its support there's bound to be more extended batteries, cases, stands, cradles, docks, and equipment for it.
The only thing the 4X HD has going for it is the price, I've paid 180e for it, and it was a huge step up from an even worse phone than yours (Samsung Galaxy Mini, s5570), but so far, I'm not a happy camper.
And the screen has a dead pixel on it, which irks me a lot.
Oh and apparently someone took the KDZ repository on that one site down. Dunno what the deal with that is too.

i would buy it, since it has good specs, and with custom roms you will have support for quite some time in future, i hope
1 GB of ram for me is enough, i don't play games on it, and after greenify hibernates apps, i got around 400 - 450 mb free, rom is latest vanir rom 4.3.1. dated 26.10.2013., and i am also using killjoy script
phone works really good, only little problem is with baseband_xmm_power wakelock, but devs are working on that and slow but surely this problem is getting reduced
camera is good for taking pictures, at least for me
i would only like that lock key is on the right side, current position is little awkward, but you get used to it
that's it from me
Thanks for the replies guys.
Hmm.... really now debating which to get 4X HD or S3 really a tough decision. I would want the 4X HD as I'm just a little bored of Samsung, but the S3 looks like will get better dev support. Its hard.

Would love to have one, but they're pretty expensive for me.
After some 'extensive' research, I have finally found the Xperia ZR. Maybe I might get it once the price drops (next year perhaps). Had earlier found the Optimus G to my liking, but I just dislike the glass back and front . Well, both have CM support which is a good thing for me

Do not buy this phone. I repeat DO NOT!
Battery life sucks, and it gets hot. It is a fricking smart frying pan. Seriously you can cook an egg on it. And it lags oh boy it lags like hell.
A good phone shouldn't need this much optimization to work better. I tried every CM, kernel etc but either you get good battery life and ****ty gaming performance or you get good performance and horrible battery life (like 2-3 hours max).
Get Optimus G or S3 but don't get this.

If you can get it for a good price and are willing to root and customize it, it's probably the best bang for a buck you can get at the moment.
The IPS screen is simply gorgeous. It's even more pleasing to the eye than my HTC One LCD screen if you ask me my honest opinion. Yes, it tends to drain the battery heavily, but with the right configuration you can get over 3 and even 4 hours of screen time easily. Oh, and I can't seem to get any scratches on it. Impressive since I don't use a case or any kind of screen protection and carry it around in my pocket all day. Only downside: fingerprints!
I like it's design and build quality. Even though it's all plastic, it neither feels nor looks (too) cheap. More important: all the buttons are in the right place for me. The ridged back provides some extra grip and looks quite OK (from a distance ) and so does the fake metal finish on the sides. It has to be the best fake metal in the business because it's still intact after dropping on my bathroom floor twice.
My biggest issue with this phone (besides being ignored by LG) has to be the sound quality. The silly speaker on the back is nearly useless when the phone is laying down. Picking it up doesn't improve anything.
I can't really comment on this phone's gaming capabilities. I don't really use my phone for that, sorry.
The only alternative I would consider in your position would be the Nexus 4. You should be able to pick it up for a fair price once Google releases the Nexus 5.

The main reason I went for this device was due to price. If price wouldn't matter, then the Galaxy S3 is a better device IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my device, but since I am using custom ROM's to have JB 4.2.2 there are some things you need to accept if you use custom ROM's (LG has not had the decency to release a JB 4.2.2 ROM
1- Camera: 3rd party cameras using flash and auto focus have issues on custom ROM's not based on stock.
2- BT can be temperamental if you are on custom ROM's
3- The f****** wakelocks that just came out of nowhere on my device are driving me nuts and killing my battery
4- Gaming is a mixed bag depending on the game.
5- External storage can be problematic if for example you are on a custom ROM and try to sync 2000+ songs (17GB's) with Media Monkey.
6- Audio: This really pisses me off... I listen A LOT to music on my devices, and I use different types of good headphones like AKG 450's or some Senheissers PX-200's and the audio chipset on this thing is pathetic, read the review about it on PhonesArena. Even more frustrating is the fact that with the AKG 450's, every time I connect the headphones, the line gets a permanent noise that was not there before. I tested the headphones extensively to make sure they were no broken, and they are fine on all other type of devices except my P880.
On a positive side, it is smooth on most of the ROM's I tried, I like how it looks, it's quite sturdy, GPS works like a charm (after a few tweaks of course); the speaker is ok, the camera when it works is ok; the community is good; the specs are good; All the good ROM's and stuff is relatively recent since it took a while for the bootloader to unlocked and not that many devs were on board. It looks way better than the SGS3 which BTW also have a TON of issues, which is why I went for the P880. Overall, the issues I listed will be sorted by the great devs that have this device, but LG is not doing itself any favours by not releasing updates more often.
So, yes, I do love it, but I will definitely update in less than 2 years to another device. No more LG for me, thank you very much until they learn to support their devices or I would just get a Nexus device.

I got this link from this discussion:

I suggest you read all of the posts, make a nandroid backup and test. The one I ended installing was the agps.patch.google.build.nossl.v3.1 as suggested in the tread, and it did improve the GPS performance of my device.

lol this is disaster mine is just fine. the real disadvantage of this phone is only the low bitrate and framerate of the camera , but thats just how the lg made it. we cant change the hardware. besides that my phone works fine
So you are saying that:
- 3rd party cameras with autofocus and flash are working fine using a custom ROM as in CM based ROM? Which one please? so I can try it.
- No wakelocks at all? What kernel are you using and how do you use your phone? Gaming?, Internet (WIFI/3G) on all the time? FB/Tweeter/G+ on with auto updates all the time?
- Connecting to a car's BT to stream music works ALL the time?
- You can syncronize more than 10GB's in one go to the external microSD with no issues ALL the time?
You must be using either a stock ROM or one based on a stock ROM.
I also am thinking about buying this phone...
I own a Desire HD and i think that it would be a huge upgrade anyways.
The battery is not a problem i think:
1)U can root and install custom roms and it would be better as almost every phone
2)It's removable so you can always get a extended one
What i would like to ask you and have your opinion guys is it would be a bit wiser to get the L9 II instead of this one
