[Q] TV Out ? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off:
Running Cognition 3.04
TV is Vizio 32" LCD 1080P
3.5 mm to rca red,white,yellow
not sure the brand of cable, just one I had lying around.
I seem to be unable to get tv out to work. Is there a certain cable that works better than others?
TV OUT Settings are on, and using NTSC. I tried PAL also just in case. I tried all the tv input settings (av1,av2, ...etc)
Saw this work in numerous videos. I must be doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for any input!

I Had a similar experience but my TV is older... I just presumed that the TV couldn't handle the output. At one point I was able to get a really faint sketchy image of the phone that was live but nothing that would let me watch any videos from my phone with it.
Edit: I found Twonky Server Mobile in the Market and stream from my phone to my Xbox360 with no problems. I recommend the app it's great!

I went on ebay a typed iphone tv out get the one with a 3.5mm jack
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Got it to work! It was the old cable I was using. I used my buddies nice new Belkin cable and it works great!

How does the quality look? Sound too?

Video Quality: Not so great, but I really didn't expect great quality through AV Cables.
Audio: Not bad at all!
I tried a couple games through headphones coming out of the tv, and the sound was real good.

Eh, not bad. Wish it had an HDMI OUT!

Exactly, that would be sweet. I read a post on here somewhere about a cable that is mini usb to hdmi, that Samsung made but then gave up on. Why oh why would they do that?

I bought a cable from radio shack and it works fine. Connected it to my 46" samsung hdtv and an older tube tv. The older tv only had a cable input so I connected the rca thru a vcr. Both work fine. One note u do need to switch the yellow and red cables when connecting to the tv. Colors wont match up to get it to work.

Well I'm not sure what cables you are using but, Yellow is video and white and red are audio on mine so that ain't happening. But as previously mentioned, I got it to work with new cable, matched all three colors.

Samsung Captivate Galaxy S OEM Micro USB to HDMI Video Cable - ECC1HU0BBEB
Found this at another site...

i read this too on a forum with the following additional info: (not sure on accuracy)
the reason it doesnt work / needs update for HDMI cable to work has something to do with the dock, in order for HDMI to work in HD through USB it requires all 5 pins/wires, and programming the phone to use them for hdmi would stop the docking cradle from putting the phone into desktop mode.
Samsung basically had a choice to make. Docking cradle with dock mode OR usb/hdmi.
**once again that was read on a forum, truthiness may very.

I just posted an email to Samsung support about compatibility and what software is needed. I will let you know what I hear.

Hi guys , did someone finally manage to get this hdmi cable to work (Samsung ECC1HU0BBEB) with the captivate
I bought it , have tried several ROM's and still nothing yet ! No signal !

Samsung Galaxy Tab RCA cable review

I'm back again with another review. This time I took a look at the official Samsung RCA cables for the Galaxy Tab. Make sure you watch my full review and for those who like to read, I know there's still a couple of you out there, I have a short summary at the bottom.
http://www.youtube.com/v/kgBDaZgM2Mg
Since before the existence of the Google TV I've always been the type of person who wanted the internet on their TV. I usually resorted to connecting my desktop or laptop to my TV but because it wasn't as convenient as something like the Google TV it wasn't something I did often. But now that I have gotten a hold of the RCA cables I am able to watch my favorite shows right on my TV via my Galaxy Tab.
I went ahead and skipped the unboxing since there wasn't anything except the cables inside the packaging. This setup was as simple as 1, 2, 3 and maybe 4. I just plugged the proprietary 30 pin connector right into the Galaxy Tab and the yellow, red and white audio/video cables went right to the back of my TV and switched my TV to the correct channel and I was up and running. Everything that showed up on my Tab was mimicked on the TV. The real reason I bought this cable was to be able to stream my TV shows right from the internet. Sometimes I download a show and put it on my Tab then just watch it later on my TV when I have time. There are no additional settings you need to mess with. Its definitely as simple as it sounds. Here's a little pros and cons list for you.
Pros:
-Extemely easy to use; plug and play
-Inexpensive compared to the dock with HDMI
-Image quality is great when sitting about 8-10 feet away
-The Tab doesn't need to be docked so its easy to just pick up to play, pause, fast forward and easy enough to just send a quick email then get back to the video.
Cons:
-Cant charge and output video at the same time. It occupies the 30 pin connector.
-If your sitting sitting 2 feet away from the TV you can definitely see pixelation. But seriously, why the heck would you sit that close to the TV. Are you trying to go blind?
-Image doesn't fill the entire screen on my 42" LCD TV.
-You can't turn the screen on they Tab off while you are watching. If you do, you will just get a black screen on your TV. Best thing to remedy this situation is to just use a backlight dimming app and keep it on the lowest setting.
Overall though, for $29.99 (or lower if you know how to shop around) there's no way you can go wrong with this purchase. I have watched full length movies and a bunch of anime and it looks excellent from 10ft away. So if you want a Google TV-like experience without the need to shell out $299 for one then I HIGHLY recommend picking this up for your entertainment needs.

Excellent review, I'm in the same boat as you as I too like to connect my gadgets to the TV - Here's my question. Having used both the RCA & HDMI accessories, which would you recommend? The portability of the RCA or the High resolution of the HDMI? Or which would you recommend as a 1st buy? Thanks!

I would definitely recommend the RCA cables first. Like i mentioned, I don't have both but I believe I chose the best option. The quality is great when you're sitting a little further away and they fact that it's compatible with almost every single TV is a bonus too. I recently was at a motel and took my wire to watch some shows and it was an older style box with no HDMI so it worked in my favor. You won't go wrong with the RCA cables.

Its not too ascetic having 10 feet of rca cable running arcorss the room.
i would rather be able to remote control the tab with say my phone if gmote works from droid to droid. i am not sure that it does. if i get a chance i will try it.
do you know if the rca cables have drm? i read the dock does. so you cannot dl a movie from media hub and output it to the tc using the dock i will hopefully have a chance tomorrow to try them both out.
thanks

The D in DRM stands for "Digital". RCA cables are purely analog, therefore they don't support DRM.

thanks for the info I guess i will be happier with the rcs cables (less quality i assume) but not "D" for DRM. I dont understand the idea behind them not wanting you to output it to the tv though. If you are paying for or renting it whats the big deal? or is it more about selling you a tv or other device so you can watch your content on the bigger screen???
anyway thanks!
Meh, I picked up my HDMI dock shipped for 42$ they don't tell you you need an HDMI A to C cable as well, amazon 10 feet, 10$. All in all 52$ for my tab to be docked HDMI. More worth it IMO.

I'm interested in the hdmi dock also. Like the rca cables, does it also duplicate everything on tab to the tv? And can you watch your downloaded movies such as from torrents on it?

I wonder if Samsung will make a straight a 30-pin to HDMI (or mini-HDMI) cable. Would be the ideal solution. Since the 30-pin connects to the dock which then outputs HDMI, AFAIK it should be possible?

Ill get my mini HDMI cable today and I will report back once I try it. I know one thing seeing my tab in 62" 1080p will be freaking awesome if it outputs everything lol.
The hdmi dock output everything.
Home screen, pictures, games, movie.
The different to the rca cable i can see, is that if you play a movie on the tab while in the dock you got the movie picture only on tv, the tab will only show controls like volume, seek etc on its screen.
In youtube, if you start to play a movie it shows on tv, and you can continue to search other clips on your tab while the first one is playing on your Tv

Just got my dock / hdmi plus rca cable as well. didnt have a chance to rent a movie through media hub and try it but will report back. it does play files that i transfer over to the GT movies etc... on each hookup hdmi /dock or rca.
****Something STRANGE happened though****
I hooked up the RCA cables with an extender so i could make the rca cables longer which i did BUT i keep getting little tiny shocks while hold the GT? WTH? what would cause that and how can I fix? is it a bad cable somewhere? CRAZY!!!

It's not "CRAZY!!!", it's dangerous. Any number of things could be causing it, if you take your cable extender out of the equation and the problem goes away, then somehow that is probably the problem. If you can lay your hands on a multimeter you can check that each contact point on the cables is isolated from each-other, but a short in the cable is unlikely to cause this problem. If the dock is involved then I'd say it's something to do with the way it's wired up internally, either intentionally so (can't imagine why) or it's got a fault.

What is a "multimeter"?
I will remove the extender and see if it still shocks (which I doubt) but I cannot try the other cables with out the extender. So I guess thats what the mulitmeter is for?

Hehehe...obviously with this cable alone you won't be able to charge at the same time connect to the tv.
You will have to use either an extender for the audio video cables or a USB extender.

The original question, the way I understood is "how to charge to tab at the same time connect to tv and watch movie or make presentation". I was assuming that there is no electrical outlet nearby to plug the charger and connect the usb cable.
As to how long or how short, the specs are all there in the dealextreme website.
I have no intention to defend this cable, My intention in posting this is to inform anybody interested that this is available for a cheap price and I am using it with no problems. If you are not interested to buy an 8 USD cable then you should instead buy the original Samsung AV cable here

I had also measured the rca cables, and the pins on the 30 pin connector and the have contact each other.

As I have stated this cable is an imitation/duplicate so I obviously cannot answer for the manufacturer/designer of this cable. Notice that the Samsung cable does not have USB. Maybe this is an after thought? Also notice that the cable are a bit small size and may not last long.....
As to complaints about this cable not working, maybe you can send your cable back to dealextreme as they do have return policy. I cannot vouch for the return service as I have not tried and have not experienced any defect on the items I got from dealextreme.
As I said-"you get what you pay for"......peace to all!
yes....we always get what we paid
The picture is smaller, up and down some inches black bar, and left rihrt very small black space
In LCD tv I can put a mode like cinema 1 and I have no black borders.

The note hs HDMI over MHL.
So you need to buy the cable

Yes it supports TV out. You need to buy an MHL adapter though. That said, it works like a charm. However, it does bog down the performance of the device (except when playing movies) because it's having to do the processing for two displays instead of one. Playing games, or web browsing, etc will be noticeably slower. However, if all you're using it is for media output, you should have no problems.
You can usually get your hands on an MHL adapter for about $20 or less.
I'm thinking about buying a HDMI MHL "cable", but have anyone here tried this one or this one? Do we need a specific MHL cable, or can we use all of them?
Edit: Found the original Samsung MHL cable for 20 Euros, so i think i'll go with that instead. It says its for SII and Galaxy Nexus, so i guess it'll work with the Note too.

Either of the one that you listed should work just fine. There's really little/no difference between those and the official Samsung one because MHL is an open standard, and hence will be compatible across many different platforms and vendors.
OK! Thanks
Now, here's a tip for possibly getting your official Samsung MHL adapter for free: Go to your local AT&T store and ask the rep if they still have the accessories for their Infuse 4G display unit. Normally they send those all back to corporate, but if you're lucky, they may still have theirs, and since corporate just throws them away anyhow, the store had no issues with just giving me their spare MHL adapter for free
I set it up with external power but couldn't get it to work. The phone switched to CLOCK.
Would a cheap $11 eBay MHL adapter work well or do we have to fork out $40 for the Samsung one?

I bought a (what would be about) $9usd cable in a small store in Hong Kong, and it works perfectly.
You have to plug the power part in first (I have a power bank thing which works well), then the micro usb into the phone, and then the phone will start outputting. Don't just plug in the microusb->hdmi and then the power, that didn't work for me and I spent a while trying to figure it out. I haven't noticed any additional lag at all.
Everything is displayed. When the phone is in portrait mode (e.g. launcher) the TV will have lots of black on either side. When playing videos landscape, it takes up the full tv screen. Sound is also output.
my tv does not have hdmi and only have the traditional red/yellow/white input. Is there any cable to connect my note to my old fashioned tv?
You can probably get some kind of HDMI to component converter, but with hdmi being digital the signal will need to be converted to analog so it will be expensive.

the price you will pay for that best you buy a new tv because the convertor sucks trust me when i say so..... a proper convertor will run 100 bucks plus even then the tv can handle the HD res so it will flicker and blank in and out or dont shows at all... spend 129 and get a nice 27" or higher native hdmi monitor...

Well, now you have one more reason. Also, a 15" CRT (ie. the old-style tube) TV consumes several times more electricity than even a 40" LCD/LED one so you're only doing a disservice to yourself by using it.
How to turn off screen using hdmi out? as battery consumption is so high even the charger cant keep up when streaming video.
I'm also having problems with my MHL adapter.
I bought this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005KJYMSC/ref=oh_o00_s02_i00_details
from amazon, as it was cheap says specifically it is compatible with the Note.
But it doesn't work, my TV just says no signal. I have the charger plugged into it, I have my 3g turned off. Everything seems right, but it wont work. I'm rather annoyed.
I have a feeling, that despite it saying so on the listing, it is infact not compatible with the Note. It says on the packaging max resolution 1280x720p... so that could well be the problem.
Moral of the story, buy the official Samsung one and save yourself the bother!
Guys,
I would like to connect my note to my car radio (7 inch screen) which has video in RCA cable.
I bought this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261025098138&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
However, it does not work when I try it on my TV. It says 'no signal'. I was told by the seller that the Note does not have the TV out option as opposed to the S2 for example. I've checked the specs on the samsung galaxy website (TV out for S2, no TV out for Note in the connectivity list).
So, is there a specific cable like MHL to RCA that I could use?
Thanks
I got the original samsung mhl adapter from a very nice fellow here on xda for $10 shipped, he had a bunch of them he was giving away, I tried it on my S2 (Note on CM9 doesn't do MHL) and other note was broken.
Once I get both my notes back I can update the thread with more info.

Tv out via 3.5 jack

I wanted to know if it is possible to connect our device to a tv which has not have a hdmi port, through a 3.5 rca cable like galaxy s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SU4Czu3LpU.
Does the hardware support it!?
interesting, i have this cable will try and get back in the morning.
If you watch the video, the galaxy s has a TV out option, in the settings, I have not seen this on the note, so i doubt it will work.
John.
i was thinking if the hardware exist then someone with the proper knowledge do the job.
You have an MHL cable to do a HDMI connection!
I have one right here from my galaxy S. Tried it last year on my note and sad to say it doesn't work.

Agreed just use the MHL cable.
Its only a few pounds from eBay and works brilliantly. Perfect HD picture.
However I've noticed this function is no longer working now I'm on paranoid Android ICS so I might have to revert back to stock rooted GB.
Tried out the cable ... didnt work
MHL is the way to go.

MHL cable anywhere?

Has anyone found a compatible mhl cable to order?
Sent from my LG-P880
I've tried Samsung and HTC cable but the quality is not top notch. The television says the signal is 720p but it looks kind of blurry... anyone have any information on the video quality outputted from the phone?

i didn't try it for myself, ebay has a lot ....
ebay {2]
Search on google for: 3m 10 Ft MHL Micro USB HDMI 1080P 3D Cable fr Samsung Galaxy i9100 HTC Sensation
This one works over here.
I tryed my old MHL cable adaptor (bought some months ago for my old SGS2) and the video quality it's great but no digital audio from device. :'(
Some other people tryed other adaptor?
Samsung works great
I bought the one from Samsung original, amazing 1080p quality, best I ever saw on my 40 inch television.
It's the one that samsung offers for S2 and S3 and it works really perfect, no lag, no glitches and it gives amazing high quality.

But Samsung has different cables for S2 and S3... I have MHL adaptor for S2 and it works perfectly with P880. With sound of course...
Is there a way to wirelessly mirror content? I think the SGS3 can do this with a special apparatus or something.

I retried it and great video and audio. Sorry. But only in 720P. My TV it's HD-Ready and not FULL-HD.
My MHL adapter it's a simple model compatible with GS2 and I bought on eBay one year ago. I payed it only 10 euros.
I can see some of you having success in display it on the TV
but I have try two different MHL adapter (I dont know if it is for S2 or S3 but I can;t seem to get it work on a computer monitor with HDMI
are there any sitting I need to change or apps that I need to install???
Maybe some settings in the hidden menu will do the trick for those where it doesn't work (not tested, since I don't own a MHL-Adapter)
Type: 3845#*880# in the phone app and the hidden menu will open. Scroll to the end and choose "HDMI Resolution Test"
There are some Settings, maybe something will make the Adapter work
will try
Hey,
I am occurring the same problem, and its annoying, but credit to Hidden92 in the "resolution" menu under "HDMI Resolution Test" , i have changed resolution to any of them and only once the email on my Samsung TV appeared.
Also i have noticed that the settings that i am selecting doesnt saved and each time i am getting into "HDMI Resolution Test" menu , the settings rolled back to default.
Well...
Anyway , you should try to do this , the less it will work for you
=====EDIT======
I have managed to Play movies using MHL cable.
it has been some connector problem, i have moved the cable abit left to right and it begin to work.
Hey MrWunderbaum,
I own 4X and using Generic MHL cable 1080p that was bough for 15$.
Everything works fine.
You should try.
In Addition, LG owns their own MHL cables , but they are abit more expensive.
I tried and mhl 3M cable that is supposed to charge the cell phone while you project, but the problem is that it must be connected to energy to work. the cable is supposed to be designed for samsung SIII and SII
Sorry for hijacking this thread a little bit and pardon my rant.
Not too long ago i bought a mini HDMI to HDMI cable for my Optimus 3D. But now im using 4X, I can't help but feel i've been f**king trolled by LG somewhat cause that cable i had is now utterly useless. Instead they are using this MHL cable.
i mean, why can't they put a mini HDMI port for the good of saving the planet and our wallets like what they are doing for microUSB?
I've got few questions in mind. Are they going to introduce another cable for their next line-up? Is this MHL port here to stay? Nobody wants to spend 30 bucks buying a cable and to have it put out of the picture by the time he change phone next year.

MHL will stay I guess. Mini-HDMI is actually quite useless, it is necessary to add an additional port to the phone for something that can be done using the already existing one (less places where dust can get into the device). The only problem is the high price for MHL cables (The mini-HDMI adapter for my O2X was about 3€).
Cheap and good
I use this: http://goo.gl/13LEr
Play 1080p and Netflix for HD TV very well.
I have ordered myself S2 mhl adapter that also has seperate charging port. I dont need long wire as i already have long hdmi cable connected to tv, so i just needed smaller adapter to connect to tv hdmi cable. Hope it works - mhl + charging
Check out the 1 i ordered (already shipped ) :
