Sync contacts to gmail? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I tried to serch buy didn't find any good info... How do I sync my contacts on my sim to my gmail account? I want to use pics for my contacts witch I can't when they are stored on my sim for some reason :S

Import from sim to phone and click on accounts to sync them to gmail. Open your Gmail from a PC or Mac...add pictures and it will update your contacts with pics. Any editing you do on Gmail contacts will affect your phone contacts.

You could export to sd card and then take the file and import into gmail through a computer if you are unable to convert the contacts on the phone itself to gmail. I dont have experience with contacts on SIM but other contacts you can change from phone to gmail so they get backup and also sync images with gmail.

Yes. First, export all your SIM contacts to SD card. This will create a .VCF file. Once done, on your mobile, select that VCF file and it will give you an option to export to your phone or your GMAIL accounts. Once exported to GMAIL, you can easily edit, add pics etc.

How to backup synced contacts

Is there a way to backup the contacts together their synced facebook ones?
It is impossible with "my backup pro", and they can' te be saved on google servers..
Thanks a lot
Ale
I'm not exactly sure i understand the my backup pro thing, but if you go into contacts, push the menu button, click on more, then export them to SD card, it'll create a VCF file with all your contacts in it, you can save it somewhere or even e-mail it to yourself.
What i always recommend is to import that file into your gmail account (directly from the phone) this way your contacts are synced no matter what happens u'll have them on your gmail account.
Rodi,
Thanks for your reply, i'll try them next time i'll have to change my rom!!
And sorry for my english

Hi, i have a problem here.
Let me explain: I have contacts in the sim, inside the phone and the ones synced through facebook.
I'd like to sync to gmail ONLY the contacts stored in the phone and I don't know how to do.
When I press export to SD Card it copies all my contacts.
Do you know a way to skip that contacts?
Thank you

I never found anything that worked well enough for me. What I did was copy all of the vcard(vcf I think) files to a directory on my sdcard. Then from the Android contacts application there's an option to load contacts from vcard files. It will scan the directories on your sd card and automatically import any vacrds it finds. Did this on my phone, have no idea if you need to copy to your internal sd card on your gtab or if the external sd card works

I found an app called touchdown (thanks to this forum!) And it works great after DL'g the beta version.
Imported all of my contacts and calender, just wish it would support the notes function from Outlook.

Or, you could export your Outlook Contacts to a CSV file and import it on your gmail contacts page. Works great

Touchdown MIGRATED my outlook contacts to the stock Contats app
Just for giggles, I Started my stock contacts app and I see that Touchdown imported, or something imported all of my outlook contacts to it.
I wonder why that happened?

****EDIT (sorry, just saw you didn't have gmail , my fault)
Does Touchdown only work with Exchange? though? If not, I may look into it.
HOWEVER, when I got my first Android phone this was a necessity for me as well (non-exchange). I found CompanionLink and I think I paid $20 or so but it's worth it. It's sync's my outlook to gmail then down to my phone and visa versa. It's the only thing I've found that seems pretty reliable. of course the phone will sync real time to gmail and then companionlink will sync to your pc either on demand or a set schedule (like I have mine set every hour). Either way, it beats plugging in the phone and manually sync'ing like the good ol days

Which is the best way to back up Contacts?

After continuosly flashing my device smt I have to format so all contacs are lost,
Ususally I use the export to sd card feature to restore contacs,
I`ve tried the outlook and Kies Sync, also Google sync,
but it seems none of them is perfect, because many joined contacts and icons are lost,
Which is the best way, without using any back up Apk?
u can export ur all contacts from contacts menu...u can backup them in ur sd or sd card and copy them in ur pc and then after flashing import back the contacts......this is the best way i do.......coz in this contacts remain as same as last time.......nothing is change no pic and associated contacts of gmail and other remove.
The best was is move your contacts to your Gmail account and let them sync.
Then if you have to wipe your device you can get everything back by just entering your Gmail email address and password.

I only sync my contacts and calendar to google. Don't technically use the phone or sim at all. Every flash I add my google account again and it's all back!
That's the way to do it.
Sorry for being stupid but how do I sync my contacts to gmail

The export as stated in the second post is my way to go.

What about the joined contacts with facebook, do they come back after restore?

I use both local back up (SD ) and google sync
I prefer Google Sync .
Google sync is good, it actually can restore your contacts to early time , I backed back to SD card too but till now , I haven't use it .
Google all the way, so easy! I really can't see what the problem is!

They do in my case. Or you could try an add-on contact manager app like GOcontacts which has the capability to search for duplicate contacts and then merge.

Me too, never lost any contacts or calendar entries...
i backup phone numbers in sim and all of them in google and facebook contacts stays there as it will synch back
backup contacts to sd card.... move them to PC then export them to your gmail contacts... gmail will join same contacts.
thats it... never lose your contacts again
vCards
I often us the share option and send the contacts a vCard to my gmail, and after flashing i just go to that email and download the vCard and all my contacts are restored. The other plus in that way is that i can choose which one to sand as vCard
MyPhoneExplorer has always done it for me
1. Backup Contacts, SMS, Events
2. Installs APKs
3. File Explorer and lots more
Have never touched Kies....
I save my contacts to ext sd card

Same here, Google sync is most reliable !
try Uia backup contact
synchronising your contacts either with your google acc. or an exchange account is a very reliable solution to protect your contacts. if you setup your fon from scratch you just have to hook up to the network and get connected to your 'cloud service' - the sync function installed on your fon will do the rest in seconds / minutes.

[Q] Import Contacts from CSV

Good day folks!
Is there any app available for importing contacts saved in a CSV file?
I recently exported my contacts to Outlook using HTC sync prior to S-OFFing.
I had also used a crappy backup tool which completely failed to restore anything
(in case you wanto know the fauly app was Backup Master, stay away)
Well, now i have the contacts in a CSV file on my SD card and i want to import the contacts to my phone book.
Tried the import through Gmail option (which i am not very keen on doing.. for obvious reasons), but even having that as a last option does not hyelp as the 'import' button does not appear in my gmail account on the mobile.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks
You could log into you gmail account on a pc, then import the contacts csv, then sync your phone contacts with your gmail account
Doing it through GMail would really be the best option
well, i did not wanto use google...
not sure if i want to voluntarily give up all my contacts...
though am quite certain they have it anyways
for anyone who may have this issue, this is what i did...
the contacts were saved in outlook...
i exported all the contacts in .vcf format to a directory on the SD card.
the stock contacts app provides an option to import contacts from memory card...
that's about it...

[Q] Storing Contacts on sdcard

My phone is a rooted unlocked ATT Atrix HD. I do not have any account set up for my contacts because I am not syncing my contacts with anything like Google or ATT. I just want to store contacts on the phone and call them. Right now, I have only the default Contacts app that came with it. When I import contacts with vcards from the external sdcard, they get stored on the internal sdcard. When I try to add a new one on the phone, it stores only on the sim card. I don't want store them on the sim card because I have to switch sims when I travel. When I go to Contacts/People > Settings > Contact Storage > Contact storage account, I have only sim card as the option.
Is there a way to store new contacts on the sdcard?
Must I create an account to store contacts? If I must, can I make up a fake account and sync it with something like Thunderbird on my computer?
Also, I saw a
/system/app/ContactsProvider.apk
Is this making Contacts app to insist on syncing with an account and not letting me store on sdcard? Should I delete it?
Thank you.
Open your contact apk and go to settings and choose export to storage and done. Same way to import them back from storage.

Well, it does not help me. Before I can export, I have to store new contacts first. It would store only on the sim. Then it will export only a vcf file for all contacts. I want to be able to write to an sdcard.
