[Q] 3 Button Recovery. What am I missing? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all.
I've finally decided to give the new 2.2.1 firmware a shot, but I want to make sure I've backed up everything properly first.
The problem is, every guide I've been reading says to get the 3 button fix set up, then backup everything from there. I can get into the recovery menu (and download mode), but I can't see anything to do with backing up that I've been led to believe should be there. Should there be anything there or am on the wrong track completely?
At the moment I get:
"Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -"
The only options are:
* reboot system now
* apply sdcard:update.zip
* wipe data/factory reset
* wipe cache partition
* format internal sd-card
Sorry if this has been covered before, but following various guides gets me here, then I'm lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

yeah the option to make a backup is only available in clockwork mod. or 2e recovery
but just backup your stuff using a back up tool from the market, there a lots of good ones ( titanium backup is my favourite but it requires root )

3 button download mode is a way of recovering from a bricked phone .
No download mode = no recovery possible .

[Q] Just some newbie questions

Hello,
I know, that professionals usually don't like these questions but I really want to know sth:
I recently installed Froyo 2.2.1 with Kies Reg Patcher and it works GREAT! The only thing that matters is the old RFS file System.
So I decided to install the Voodoo lagfix.
I put the update.zip in my root/sdcard and tried the following:
1. I started the DOWNLOAD Mode - but only the yellow shield appeared - nothing happened as expected (maybe nothing to download?)
2. I started the RECOVERY Mode and selected "Apply update.zip". ==> It was telling me after 2 seconds "Error ... unsigned ..."
==> I knew this is caused by the new recovery assistent. After all I rebootet my phone and every thing works like it was before.
Now the questions:
1. Is my system unchanged? I mean has the update.zip file copied some files until it aborded?
2. Is it bad when I turn my phone in Download mode? I mean it didn't flash/download anything - so does it really damage my phone when I press the power key 5 sec and restart my phone (ONLY IN THIS SITUATION - I know that pressing it during an update process/by appearance of the status bar can damage the phone).
Please give me some answears!
PS: By the way, on woodoo-project.org it is written that the update.zip mode "...works with clockworkmod" - what is this for a mod? I googled but I only found variations about it - not a documentation and their website seems o be down.
Has this mod automatically been installed before the "Unsigned Error" came?
LG,
Dennis
In order to have your phone lag fixed, you need to root the phone (root: complete system access of your phone).
1. In download mode the phone wont update anything on its own. You need to use odin for flashing (installing) through the computer.
2. In froyo 2.2.1 you have a 3e recovery (which only updates with signed apk's) - your update.zip file is custom hence its unsigned.
about your q's
1. Your system has not been changed as the process was aborted (no files are copied or changed)
2. Its completely safe to restart you phone in download mode if you aren't flashing anything.
Note: In order to use voodoo lagfix you need to get 2e recovery for flashing custom unsigned apk's. This can be done by using CF root method (this will root your phone and also install ClockWorkMod - CWM). CWM will allow you to install the update.zip.
*For more info. just check the thread about rooting/lagfix etc. to get step by step instructions.
Thank You very much! Now I get it!

[Q] Clean fresh Install OS - Required

Hi..
I was trying to upgrade my samsung galaxy s plus (GT-19001) device to Android 4.0.4.
i just installed CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 on my device by rebooting and selecting (install zip from sd card).
------using mentioned combination of keys -------
Then i placed the files in my phone's internal SD Card.
files are mentioned below:
1-> cm-9-20121011-ivendor-ariesve-rc5.zip
2-> gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
3-> recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-ariesve.zip
then install 1 by choosing from internal SD card and then 2nd file.
my device prompted completion success messages but it took very short time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now what happened after doing this. my device is displaying same booting screen of CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 on each re-boot.
i treid many times by unplug the battrey but unfortunately unsuccessfull.
After that i did Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried it through window's based utility Odin v4.43 but it could detect my device usb driver even after success of USB driver installation.
it didn't display Added in message box.
now what should i do ?
i already installed samsung Kies but still undetected.
I tried some old version of Odin 3v1.8 , it detected the port and displayed Added but failed to write ROM on my device.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My desktop machine's OS : windows 8 64 bit enterprise edition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am unable to install new ofor revert back my OS because when i Hold Vol Down + Home + Power, This is not putting me in Download Mode instead Ramdump Mode.
I need your guidence to resolve the issue. Thanks in advance.
Please ask for further details if required.
I'm not sure I got exactly what you did.
1) You installed CWM recovery.
2) You rebooted into recovery.
3) You installed the CM ROM zip.
4) You installed the GApps zip.
5) You rebooted.
Am I right ? And now you only get access to the recovery ?
If you're coming from a GingerBread ROM, this is normal. Simply, re-install the ROM again (and the GApps obviously). If it doesn't work, tell us.

Hi Einril.
I try to summarize in some chunks for better understanding.
=======================================================================================
Hi.
I just started with CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 and placed all above mentioned files/packages into the device internal SD card.
That's what i did :
1). Entered into the recovery mode menu by holding down Volume Up + Power and installed CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 zip from the selection of Internal SD Card .
2). After reboot, i came up again in Recovery mode using CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 application.
3). Now installed cm-9-20121011-ivendor-ariesve-rc5.zip by the navigation of "Install zip from SD".
It took hardly 4 to 5 seconds and displayed a message that it completes . no flash screen or anything came up and reboot.
4). After that installed gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip by the navigation of "Install zip from SD".
It displayed same complete message but within 5 to 8 seconds i think.
5). I Wipe data/cache/Dalvik cache after above step and then again repeat the process.
After that i did Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
Now when i try to start my device then each time it comes into the CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4' s recovery mode.
Ask further please if anything is unclear, i have tried too many things with it but yet not soft bricked.
I am able to switch into Download mode.
Did you try to re-install the ROM from the recovery ? (flash cm-9-20121011-ivendor-ariesve-rc5.zip again)

Hi Erinil,
I think i installed but not sure.
Could you elaborate the re-install ROM steps ?
I tried but same recovery display of CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4, comes again and stay on recovery mode screen.
How my OS will be started?
It might be possible , i am doing something wrong.
Could you enlist the steps?
Ok.
1) Boot into recovery.
2) Wipe data/Factory reset.
3) Wipe cache.
4) Go to Advanced, then wipe Dalvik cache.
5) Go back, go to Mount & Storage, then Format System.
6) Go back, go to Install zip from SD Card => Choose zip from SD Card => cm-9-20121011-ivendor-ariesve-rc5.zip.
7) Do the same thing for the gapps zip.
8) Wipe data/Factory reset again (just to be sure).
9) Reboot.
This, I think, is the cleanest install you can do. Tell me the result.

Einril I tried it same as you explained in steps.
It didn't worked nor display any error during this process.
I think my problem is that. when i start my device it automatically entered into the recovery mode of CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4..
whether i hold Vol+ and Powerbutton or not, it entered into the recovery mode each reboot.
It might be possible that OS has been installed sucessfull but how the OS will be started now?
Hum, that's strange. You say you can access to Download Mode ? Are you able to flash back the Samsung stock ROM ?
Hi Einril,
What does that mean? Means that Reverting to Gingerbread through Desktop Window OS?
I am unable to revert from my One Laptop (i7 3610 & WIndow 8 - 64 bit) but i am able to revert from my OLD laptop (OS is : window 7 32 bit)
Ok, I heard that some people are having issues with USB drivers on Windows 8. But if you can restore Gingerbread with your old computer, this is great.
Can you try to re-install a stock gingerbread firmware, with re-partition enabled, and then to try again the procedure I gave you ? This way, we are sure that your previous attempts have no effects on the result.
Einril, I have installed stock gingerbread firmware on my device and it is working now.
now guide please how to re-partition? Do you mean using CWM recovery ?
Could you simply enlist the thing which i will have to do now on fresh gingerbread OS?
I 'll tell you today night because right now i am not at home.
Well, if your gingerbread frmware is working, you don't need to repartition.
Now, simply re-install ClockworkMod Recovery, and re-do the whole installation process I gave you. By the way, you said you installed ClockworkMod recovery by flashing a zip in recovery. Isn't it supposed to be a .tar.md5 to flash via Odin ?
Yes i installed ClockworkMode Recovery from recovery mode.
I haven't tried with .tar.md5 using Odin4.43.
I 'll try with both throught Clockworkmode and Odin.
In fact i have tried many time 2-3 months ago too through TeamWin Recovery . problem was same.
It didn't start my OS instead displaying its recovery screen and operations.
i tried but all in vain.
Couldn;t be successful.
it just start from CWM recovery mode and so. not switching into the other mode.

[How to][Guide] Use CWM6 despite the Bluescreen

Lots of people have bluescreen problem with CWM6 but someone doesn't know that the recovery is working except the bluescreen problem.
So you can do everything with this recovery despite the bluescreen. In fact if you use volume buttons and home buttons you can flash, wipe, reboot, etc.
But the problem is: how can I do it if I can't see what I'm doing?
Now,after some reboots, I had CWM6 without bluescreen one time so I wrote each menu entry and so I'm sharing it with you:
Main menu:
reboot system
install zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
backup and restore
mounts and storage
advanced
Install zip submenu:
choose zip from sdcard
choose zip from last install folder
install zip from sideload
toggle signature verification
Wipe data/factory reset submenu:
no
yes
Wipe cache partition submenu:
no
yes
Backup and restore submenu:
backup to sdcard
restore from sdcard
delete from sdcard
advanced restore from sdcard
free unused backup data
choose default backup format
Advanced submenu:
reboot recovery
reboot to bootloader
power off
wipe dalvik cache
report error
key test
show log
Now the problem is how to flash a new rom? you can use CWM Manager or you can use CWM directly.
For example if you want to flash CM11-COOPER.zip via CWM, and not with the CWM manager app,you should:
-put the rom in the sdcard
-rename the rom zzCM11-COOPER.zip so it will appear at the end of the list
-reboot in cwm
- vol down -> home button -> home button -> vol up -> home button -> vol down -> home button
- wait some minutes for flashing
- press back button some times (just to be sure you came back to the main menu)
- press home button (reboot system)
If you want to wipe cache you should:
- boot in cwm
- vol down -> vol down -> vol down -> home button -> vol down -> home button
If you want to wipe dalvik cache you should:
-boot in cwm
- vol up -> home -> vol down -> vol down -> vol down -> home button -> vol down -> home button
P.S: I noticed that CWM6 is slower than CWM5 so you must do each step slowly to be sure everything works well.
P.S.2: sorry for my english!
finding ways against all odds! evil trick.
ty men its really helped just did it and i have kit kat on xd i didnt wipe beacuse i had cm 10.1 so i didnt need to wipe at all so just put the room and start to install after 2minits i did rebot and that all
ty
Thank you!
Thank you so much! I was stuck on this blue screen issue, and your menu list helped me get the latest kitkat rom on my samsung ace. First I did a factory reset following your menu, but i didn't know how to return to the begining after it completed it. So I just pulled out the battery and powered back into the blue screen to do the cache wipe, pulled the battery again once I felt the process should be done. Then I restrted back to the blue screen and followed youf steps to put the rom on the phone. I left it for maybe 20 minutes, because i didn't know how long it would take for it to complete. Pulled out the battery again, started the phone normally, and now I have kitkat.
Thanks again for posting the menu.Couldn't have done this without it!
and format/system????

Why CWM ? Why not a pre-rooted firmware which will not void warranty?
Ans : CWM has many more functionality than stock recovery ! Rooting means to playing around with your device. If some thing goes wrong it you have to flash the whole firmware again instead, backup your ROM through CWM and if something goes wrong restore your backup AS SIMPLE AS THAT !
All you have to do is follow my instructions :
STEP 1 :
-Download and setup ADB drivers for your device
can be found here Drivers !
STEP 2 :
-Download the recovery from ---> Link
-Download odin 3 Link
-Turn of your device and go to odin mode [ Vol down + power + home button (all at the same time) ] release it when you see Note Neo logo
-Press vol up to confirm
STEP 3 :
-Now that you are in odin mode connect your device via usb cable !
-Now open Odin3 3.09 that you have downloaded.
-If there is a pop-up like Installing ADB drivers let it get finished it is usually updates !!!!
-Make sure the COM : xx (xx is usb port number it can be any number so dont worry about it,just verify COM is lit up)
-Select the recovery (Link in STEP 2) ! Now select AP and browse to where you have .tar file and select it
MAKE SURE U UNTICK THE AUTO-REBOOT BUTTON
-Click Start
ONCE IT SAYS PASS ...REMOVE THE BATTERY ...THEN RE-INSERT THE BATTERY AND BOOT INTO RECOVERY USING VOL UP + HOME + POWER BUTTON
HOW TO ROOT THE DEVICE :
-Download SuperSu (obviously the latest one) from here ------> Click here !
-Copy that to internal sd card
-Power off your device and press vol up + power + home button (all at once)
-Select install zip from sdcard --->choose zip from sdcard ---> scroll down and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.xx.zip

Hi
The philz touch recovery is not working completely.
First of all, I tried to wipe cash, when I wiped, tried to reboot device but after reboot, the phone was not boot normally and automatically booted into recovery.
I rebooted the device again but it goes to recovery again.
Then I decide to flash stock firmware using odin and did it.
After that flashed Philz recovery using odin and boot my device into recovery and it was OK.
Then I tried to install Update SU-v2.40.zip using recovery but the install zip is not working.
I tried it to install Super SU-v2.40.zip
But it was aborted.
It shows the bellow message…
E: failed to set up expected mount for install;aborted.
The zip file that I want to install using recovery is in my exsdcard.
I tried Mount and Storage….
There is no item for mounting exsdcard.
I tried every item in mounting and storage, but nothing was changed.
The backup and restore is not working too.
I flashed cwm recovery that you have made and tried to install the same zip file,
It’s ok. Install complete.
In CWM recovery backup and restore is not working.
Can you help to solve these problems?????
Thanks a lot.

Hi
after booting the recovery, the error lines are appear (as I told in cwm and you said they are normal)
when I tried to install zip from exsdcard, the previous error was shown and the process abort.
(E: failed to set up expected mount for install;aborted.)
I tried to use backup and restor
and backup system, data, boot, recovery and efs to exsdcard.
the message appear that it's done.
I restart the phone and it is normal.
I used Esfile manager and brows to my exsdcard and folder clockworkmod.
these file is there.....
.last_install_path
.recovery_version
and a folder named "backup"
in backup folder there are 2 folders....
1 of them is .efs_backup (consist of 1 folder named "1970-01-29.22.56.33") and 2 other files (efs_19700129_225634.img and log.txt)
the other folder is 1970-01-29.22.57.01_noname that consist of 3 files (boot.img, nandroid.md5 and recovery .log)

Hi
Wipe cache is not working yet.
I tried to wipe cache, the process of wipe cache is so faster than before.
At the end, the message appear that shows wiping cache is complete.
After that I tried to restart phone to normal boot, but the phone does not boot normal and automatically boot into recovery.
I tried it 3 times but there was nothing changed.
I restored the files that backed up before using last version of philz recovery.
the message appear that restore is complete, but the phone did not boot normally and automatically boot into recovery.
I Flashed a firmware using odin and now the phone is booting normally.

Philz recoveryorignal thread here
Done ! And you are ready to go

[Q] bootloop after insufficient space rooted

I have rooted my m10g using magics via twrp and also applied the "no-dm-verify" patch but I didn't notice about the "forced data encryption" patcher here so that's reason why I didn't patch it at this point! anyway the data section was mounting without any problems but after I reboot recovery I was getting error In mounting the data section I just ignore it and I was able to boot into system normally but after some days exactly after "insufficient space" I just rebooted for some reasons and after that the device won't boot anymore / stucked at bootloop...!
I was able to see the home screen/touch wiz about 4 seconds and after that it's reboots again and again (In this point I tried to delete unwanted files quickly but there's no luck).
Things I have tried:
- flashed an recovery.img extracted from combination firmware and tried the "lacking storage booting" an option from stock recovery menu the device started in safe mode (It's says something like this: please bacup your stuff and then perform factory reset) but it's still won't boot (bootloop).
- twrp decrypt (I set no password there but I just tried In hope of chance) btw twrp never asked before to decrypt my data or to enter any password.
- I did twrp backup to my ext-sd and decompiled the boot.img to see what can I do (but after magics's patch I can do nothing).
- Pulled full userdata (mmcblk0p26) section also the emmc (mmcblk0) and tried to mount via linux reader windows tool / opening via 7zip but still can't access the userdata section. also tried to open the dumped userdata via hex editor but still can't see anything(looks like encrypted).
Things I want to try next:
- Format the data section after that try to restore the dumped userdata section via dd command.
- Enable usb debug at boot time and try to adb shell stop then pull all important data from the device.
- Inject custom script in stock_recovery.img to copy all internal files to the externel-sdcard (or even delete some huge files that I'm pretty sure of their path).
Notes / just to be clear:
* Flashing the stock kernel will encrypt the userdata section and the bootloop will stop but I'll lose all my data (I know that so I was just switching from the stock recovery to twrp).
* I could just perform a format data from the recovery menu / twrp or just flash the stock firmware to fix the booting problem but first I need to all my files get back.
Looking for any help in things that I want to try next.
Finally after a lot of tries I have solved my problem...!
How?
Short answer: ClassyKitchen
Long answer:
I just started creating my first rom In ClassyKitchen and I just enabled adb and removed dm-vertify via the kitchen and after the rom has prepared I just flashed through TWRP after I reboot the phone wasn't able to boot (stucked at first samsung logo) switched the device to download mode and I flashed system only using odin... after that phone started with setup wizard! and it's was still in safe mode (the backup message was still showing also) anyway I completed the setup wizard then check the home screen and apks I have installed wasn't there...!!! I opened "My Files" and finally I was able to see my files again!
I just copied all my internal sdcard to my external sdcard...!
After the copy ends I tried to exit safe mode to get my installed apks/contacts again so I just rebooted the phone to exit from the safe mode! But after the reboot "custom binary flashed bla bla".
I flashed stock "boot.img" and "recovery.img" using odin But as I said in the first post data encryption was there...!!!
Anyway I flashed full stock firmware after that I unlocked my OEM and flashed TWRP again and I restored the emmc dump using dd after restore completed rebooted the phone and it's back to it's state...!
this time I just flashed the patched boot.img (ClassyKitchen) and after the reboot phone started normally with setup wizard as said above! Connected to wifi unlocked my OEM and I was trying to get out of safe mode I rebooted and rebooted and power off but I wasn't able to disable the safe mode...!!!
I tried to root using magics but it's failed (the boot was patched by bla unsupported something like that) also the data section was still unmount able! In the TWRP
Anyway I just stopped at this point! Because I have reach my point (Getting back my sdcard data).
Notes!:
* All thanks goes to the author of ClassyKitchen.
* TWRP I was using found here.
* Odin I have used found here.
* I was using the same firmware version (PDA) installed in my phone.
* I have unlocked my OEM using this method the first time I have used it's taked from me only 3 days!.
* The idea of taking full encrypted emmc backup was by this post (I was getting some error messages so I just used "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/your_external-sd/mmcblk0.img" In case of "no space left error" format your externel-sdcard to ext4 and try again).
Sorry for my bad English x).
