[Q] Nexus One --> Galaxy S ?

I realise there was a giant mad thread about this that just got closed and I'm not interested in reforming that here. I have a few questions and would like some discussion but not interested in arguments
1) Prices where you are?
Where I live (New Zealand) Nexus One cost about the same as the Galaxy S. I'm just wondering is the Nexus One regarded as a cheaper phone in America or where ever you live (I realise it's not sold anymore, but before they stopped selling it) and when I say cheaper I mean purely money wise, not feel or anything.
I ask this because I've seen the statement before: "Galaxy S is great but it's not worth the extra money from a Nexus" and just wondering if that's how it really is.
2) Gaming?
I'm curious as I see a lot of people here defending their Nexus One's over the Galaxy S and I understand the reasons they give however I have a feeling all the people that prefer their Nexus One's to any Galaxy S series phone don't use their phones for gaming much, if at all. Would this be correct?
I currently own a Nexus One and I have to be honest for gaming it really sucks. I was so excited for Gameboy & Playstation emulators and I can't play any kind of RPG or Action game on them that requires me to push more than 1 button at a time or it registers my fingers all over the place!
My Situation
Due to prices being what I believe to be a little backwards here I can sell my old Nexus One (with a couple of little marks around it, etc, basically it's just used) and buy a BRAND NEW 8GB Galaxy S and it would only cost me a maximum of $100 ($70 US) or if things work out well it'd cost me nothing at all. Which brings me to question 3...
3) Should I 'upgrade'?
I know a lot of people don't consider it an 'upgrade' however for me personally I consider it entirely worth it for the GPU & multitouch alone. I brought my Nexus One excited of the idea of multi touch gaming and am guttered at how virtually any emulated or 3d game performs on my N1 (I was totally unaware of the lack of multi-touch when I brought the phone)
Also I'm interested in any sort of discussion on reasons for/against switching to a Galaxy S but please no NEXUS ONE IS BEST DIE IPHONE FANBOY GALAXY IS CHEAP PLASTIC crap. I love my Nexus but I feel the Galaxy better suits me.

Ok. I was probably one of the ones who was arguing in the other thread but I didnt start it. I got bashed because I said the Galaxy is the better phone.
Anyways Im not going down that road again. Ive got both phones at this moment and if your into gaming I say go to the Galaxy. Is the galaxy a way better phone, no, But what it has is definetely a upgrade. Ive said it before and ill say it again. On the sgs I never have to check my memory worrying about if I got enough room to install a new app, I used to check daily on my n1. I never ever check memory as I still got over 1.2 gigs left and about 120 apps installed. Gaming, Im not to into gaming as Im a 27 year old man, but when I do Id like to be able to play them well, and On the n1 it was a total failure. Toon warz would wig out when you shoot and run at the same time and when you let go of shooting it will still be shooting because of the axis problem. Pinch to zoom alone even in the browser isnt even as close to the SGS.
The super amoled is way better than regular amoled and makes it look like a TFT screen.
Im not gonna go into more about how the sgs beats the n1 cause ive done that enough, so Ill answer your question.
Hell yes I am, the SGS is the better device, by a lot? No, but enough for me to upgrade. The MT alone is enough for a upgrade and you wanna play games? well the SGS has no problem playing toon warz. I need a top device that can multitouch, and the N1 will never, ever be able to play MT games well. Even the old Iphone2g had better MT screen than the n1. I actually laugh at people who think the N1 handles 3d games as well as the SGS. Just not gonna happen. Go on youtube and watch on Android.com I believe the benchmarks vs SGS against droid x, evo and n1, the dude even plays asphalt and even the Video maker says that the SGS blows it all away.
Im not dogging the n1 cause im keeping mine, its a great phone and a great developer phone, but if you want gaming or for movies, the n1 is just not the device for that. The SGS sounds more like its what your looking for, True MT, More responsive for games, bigger screen and Waaaay brighter.

No hating on me this time please. The n1 is great, but common, the SGS out Specs it in almost all departments.

1) Not from what I remember, I payed $530 out right for my Nexus when it came out, Most of the current galaxy s phones are currently going for cheap on Amazon and such. I think it was basically free with a 2 year last I saw.
2) The GalaxyS has a getter GPU then the Nexus One (and most of the snapdragon phones to be fair) so the GalaxyS would most definitely play games better then the Nexus One.
3) It appears that 3D gaming is important to you, and if thats what you want the the GalxS phones should work great for you. Also the CPU is a smidgin' better on the GalxS then on the Nexus.
Most people in the Nexus One forums including myself see anything that doesnt give the freedom like a dev phone is a downgrade. That is where the "its not an upgrade" thing is coming from. Because with the mod community you basically never have an old phone, you can always flash a new rom and be totally different from anyone else.

If you want something for gaming i suggest waiting for a Tegra 2 tablet or if you dont like tablets LG is making some Tegra 2 Phones which will be super fast..or you can get the Milestone 2 when it comes out.

I don't for a second believe Samsung will put the requisite priority on upgrading the OS to the latest Android. I think it will get upgraded, unlike the Behold II, but I don't think it'll happen for MONTHS after phones like the N1. Also, Touchwiz is hideous and changing to ADW or LP doesn't help with the cartoonish icons.
That being said, I AM jealous of the screen, processor, and multitouch sensor... just not enough to put myself into what I know will be a very frustrating position in a few months.

That's one thing I'll definitely miss however I'm an absolute sucker for interface and screens.
For example the physics bounce back in list menus on the Galaxy S! Such a simple thing but to me I see it as so important as it's something that you constantly encounter and I love the overall feel it gives to the device.
and I think anyone that has used it has to admit that the 4 inch screen is beautiful and I wasn't sure I would but after using it I think the 4inch is a great size (I'm thinking Droid X & EVO would be too big for me)
I'm sad to admit it but the iPhone still kicks Android's ass with its gestures and physics. I prefer Android in every other area of the OS but for example the Gallery and Web Browser in iPhone if you have a play with it you'll see what I mean with the pinch to zoom, it is really really nice to use. I always wished my Nexus had that and I'm glad to see Samsung took some steps towards getting that feel to Android (with the list bounce back etc.)
but back to my point. I love the developer side of my Nexus one and that we get new versions etc so early however I'm the sort of person that everytime I open the Gallery app I have to do a wee pinch on each photo just because I love gestures and multi touch so much or will unlock my phone just to look at the big screen and the live wallpaper with water rippling in my hand and I think thats why I feel so drawn to the Galaxy S with its giant bright screen and amazing GPU that can render that awesome Samsung live water wallpaper with ease (check it out if you haven't)

I see what you're saying and I considered this as well however with my situation that I mentioned in the OP I currently have the opportunity to move to a Galaxy S with little or no cost, however when it comes to these next generation devices coming out later this year my Nexus will be worth a lot less and it will cost a lot more to upgrade to them.
I probably will buy a new device about mid way through next year and I will be willing to put more money into one then, however I don't want to (or mainly my girlfriend doesn't want me to ) put another few hundred into a phone in a few months time.

Pinch to peak is horrible on the n1. Funny thing is they added that while testing it on the n1. I guess they assumed no more clearpad 2000.
I love mt gestures as well. Feels futuristic.

I believe phones work different over there how you buy them on contract and get them cheaper etc.
Here you just buy whatever phone and put a sim card in it, be it 'pre-pay' or 'on account'. So all phones are 'unlocked'

i am the owner of a nexus one. nearly all my phones have been from htc. i love the htc brand because of the community(xda). it is a fact everybody has to agree. an example the i5700 (comparable to the hero) but u can take a look yourself who got the better development... xperia x10 ...excellent hardware but no community support and they merely got root.
Is it an upgrade?
Hmmmm...arguable. Hardware- absolutely. the samsung i9000 is definetely an upgrade in terms of hardware but u have to keep in mind that it is 7 months newer than n1. both phones have their goods and bads. no phone is perfect. I said arguable because i am sure software wise that n1 is and will be superior. Most of us here like to flash roms, change builds..... this makes the difference (as i stated in the beginning).i do not think i9000 will get the support of this community. Just take a look at how many custom roms are present for i9000. Also at the end of the year , n1(google's developers phone) will definetely be gettting the gingerbread whereas the i9000 will be stuck on 2.2. remember that i9000 already got the upgrade from 2.1 to froyo ; so 2 upgrades for a phone is less likely. this is the policy of phones companies, instead of pushing an upgrade for the phone, they will release a new phone with gingerbread .
Is it worth?
i wont be upgrading the n1 until the 2gz or dualcore processors are out but It depends on u and ur means. Phones nowadays do not reign as a flsgship more than 3-4 months , maybe less. eg... desire hd will be out soon, then in Q2 2011, samsung is releasing a phone with 2gz processor with 1gb memory, ... android 4.0. If you have the money, ... ur choice.
My advice...
If you are so concerned about gaming, sincerely.. i would advise you to take an iphone. I myself would never buy and iphone (hate it cause i am flash addicted and i am not into games).We here at xda tend to critisize the iphones but i have to admit that it is the best at multimedia purposes mainly gaming....
You can upgrade to i9000 if u want but maybe i am wrong but the android market currently do not have many graphical games that would suit ur needs nd by the time these games get developed, then it will be time to reupgrade the phone... vicious circle!

I'm not entirely about gaming and I couldn't stand to buy an iPhone, many things about it disgust me. Such as a homescreen that is only an app draw!? How they deny flash, how they block countless applications, how I have to run iTunes to do anything.. argh I could go on forever. So iPhone is not for me, I love Android. As I said before however if it came down to it I think I like live backgrounds, multitouch gestures, large screens more than I like the development side... Very tough choice though.

Also on another note I believe Galaxy S series is soon going to become a Cyanogen Mod supported device which pretty much means it'll get all the development I need am I right in assuming this??
I mean, hell it even brought 2.2 to the G1! So I can assume if Cyanogen does a version 7 for 3.0 and Galaxy S is a supported device that I could eventually see 3.0 through Cyanogen Mod if Samsung never decided to do an update?

haha yeah I saw that video the other day. The GPU is amazing in the Galaxy S phones, definitely in a league of its own at the moment.

If your just going to use the phone as it is I would say galaxy s, but on the flip side if to want root and gear developer base be patient or go with the nexus 1.

I'm not really that worried about Galaxy S development btw. There has been more than 2 million (I think it might be over 3?) sold already counting US & International version sales. Just two days ago when a test Froyo build got leaked the Galaxy S (international) development thread had over 1000 people viewing it. I think all the rom development (although there already are a few out atm) are waiting for Samsungs offical 2.2 which is coming out in a couple of weeks.

Galaxy TAB. Prob run same as the Galaxy S. Why go with 4" when you can have 7" screen. Wait and see tomorrow what the specs are going to be. Keep your n1 and wait for the TAB i say. I bought a captivate. Surely a great phone. I got frustrated with the development on the Captivate. I figured it will be that way. CM will be out but who knows when it will be released no word. I bet when a official froyo will be released they will release the CM6 as well. Gives them some time to work on it. If you really want to game and watch movie do it on a bigger screen. Why on a 4" screen. My n1 will hold up to what i need to do to survive a day without any laggs, glitch or whateva i throw at it. It runs like a champ. N1 will only be replaced by N1. Yeah not good for game but it will do everything else. So if you looking for a gamer type of phone, SGS is good to go but you will be without much development. Plus even with CM, i don't see ginerbread running on the SGS. My 2 cents.

Development will be just fine. Like you said, all 4 carriers and sold a lot so far. More people are on the sgs.

Dont be confused here, they are separate phones, each will require different roms. Do not make the mistake of counting all sgs phones in the same basket, as far as the mod community is concerned they are separate phones each require separately coded roms.

Agreed!!!!! all galaxy s phones are not the same!
Also another point to be noted is that number of phones sold is not necessarily directly proportional to the development ...
e.g, 1. i guess that (like they say) nexus one is a flop in sales but however has had enormous activity in the development section.
2. Motorola milestone/droid had an enormous success in sales(also sold millions). but did it have the kind of development we are used to???
It all comes to whether Samsung will improve their security on the bootloader bla bla bla on their froyo upgrade. and depends whether the quality chefs are shifting to the sgs or not.

Correct, but they will be easy to cross mod since most the files and codes are alike, yes they will require different Roms and etc, but if the epic 4g can do something chances are the others can with a slightly different way.

[Q] Is the Galaxy S an upgrade to the HTC Desire?

I know similar threads have already been made, but having had no experience with the Galaxy S, I was just going to ask a few questions with have not really been answered in some cases:
1. Are there any custom ROMs for the Galaxy S that get rid of TouchWiz in favour of a Google Android experience?
2. Samsung has recently announced that it will release Gingerbread for the Galaxy S. Is it likely that this will be running TouchWiz, or will it be similar to the ROM on the Nexus S?
3. Will it be straightforward for the community to port ROMs from the Nexus S, seeing as it has almost identical hardware to the Galaxy?
4. Is it possible to use the front facing camera in Skype?
5. Is the build quality on par with the HTC Desire?
The software in my opinion is the main issue with the Galaxy S, so it would be really helpful if someone could give me some insight into what is going on in the Galaxy S community. So far I have only had experience in the HTC Desire forums.

First of all, galaxy s is way much better than desire!
1. Yes it is!

5. no, htc desire has a little better build quality. for me galaxy has a very good built quality!

I switched from my htc desire to the samsung galaxy s for about a week, and then switched right back to my desire!
The software on htc's desire is still greater than the galaxy s, as the desire works out of the box, and galaxy s needs a lagfix just to be able to run as smoothly.
The build quality feels much cheaper on the galaxy s, but I dont believe there's too much difference in actual quality, mainly the feel of it. The galaxy s has a slightly better screen and slightly better specs inside (not really enough to justify the switch)
All in all though, it's up to you whether you really want to change. If you feel like something's missing from the desire, then maybe go into a phone store and try one out, for the feel of it, and if you like, go ahead and take the plunge

Most likely it WILL have touchwiz , but i think by the time Samsung makes official Gingerbread update , there will be unnofficial one from Nexus S (still nobody knows for sure).

If you're running stock - Desire (apart from the incredible SuperAmoLED screen on the Galaxy S)
If you're running a Custom Rom - Samsung Galaxy S most DEFINITELY!

At this point of time, you'd honestly be better off waiting for Dual core Mobiles. It's an upgrade, but you need to ask yourself if you truly need the new features.

When are dual core mobiles going to start coming out? I was actually thinking of waiting for HTC's next flagship device running Gingerbread. Anyone have any idea when such a device might be released?

If you don't like TW, you can always download LauncherPro. It looks/feels more like stock Android.

Some are apparently expected by end of year (at least thats what LG claimed in Sept). However, unsure about Android ones.
If you have plenty of money, go ahead and upgrade if you want. But unless you need 720p recording, and want the superior touch performance of the Galaxy, at this time, I think it's worth waiting

Don't go for the SGS if you have a Desire.
The difference isn't worth the money.
Wait for dualcores that will come next year.
2011 is gonna be a good year for phones, and you should hold on for a good upgrade

Depends if you already own a HTC Desire. I have owned a HTC Desire for a few months, and switched to a Galaxy because it was thrown in free with a provider change.
If you already own a Desire, you'll probably will not be totally satisfied with the Samsung Galaxy S.
- despite the Amoled screen, much cooler colours on the Galaxy (white is blueish),
- software just isn't working as smoothly as with HTC (unless you install the latest JPU firmware which makes it on par),
- i miss the optical trackpad now and then
On the plus side:
+ very active ROM community, you could flash several new ROMS and kernels a day
+ better battery life (with the right setup)
+ larger screen
+ much better graphics performance in games
+ Allshare (play photo's & videos straight to your Samsung TV)
I used to rleally like HTC Sense, but with Launcherpro on the Galaxy, there isn't that much difference.
My conclusion: if you already have a HTC Desire, upgrade to the Desire HD, or wait for the Galaxy S2

1. Touch wiz is not that bad. It's much more than the launcher. I prefer touch wiz ui with launcher pro. Touch wiz launcher is too iphonish for me.

Another advantage is swype, works flawless and speeds up text input.
Sound quality is far better than htc desire, loudspeaker, headphones, etc.

Cheers for that. I now know that it was a mistake getting the Desire instead of the Samsung. However, the problem with getting the Samsung right now might be that a new device will come out only two months down the line, rendering the Samsung obsolete. I wouldn't normally mind that, but I'd be quite pissed off if that was the result of me not being able to wait a month or two.
Currently I have an HTC Desire and also an iPhone 4 32GB in my possession, so I could theoretically raise about £700 for a new phone. That might put me in a good position with the dual core phones coming out and all.
Does anyone know what the next generation of phones will be like? Might it be better to skip them out entirely?
Right now I can compare the Desire and iPhone, and I must say the iPhone is better in more ways than it's worse. Despite this, I was still considering selling it due to the issues with poor signal.
The iPhone build quality is definitely better, the games are actually worthwhile, and some of the apps, especially from larger companies like Facebook, seem more polished. In addition, I like the music player better (Genius is a great feature whatever anyone else may think), and the audio quality through headphones is superior. However, in almost every other way related to firmware, I think Android beats iOS. This includes gmail integration, stock apps such as contacts (especially on Sense UI) and the numerous options to customise it and play around with it; I can't install a custom kernel or test out a MIUI ROM on my iPhone.
This leaves me in a difficult position. Probably the most important considerations for me are apps, games, and the ability to use basic phone functions. The iPhone does two of these well, but is lacking in the phone department. On the other hand is Android, which is getting better as we discuss this on this very forum.
Sorry for the long rant, but does anyone else think that the quality of apps, and integration with all the different phones (fragmentation!) that are running Android vastly need to improve before Android can really rival the iPhone? I recently ran The Sims 3 side by side on both platforms. Need I say more? For me it's about quality rather than quantity. I'm not going to install all of the 80,000 apps on Android, or the 260,000 or whatever it is on the iPhone. What I will say is that most apps are comparable, but this isn't true when it comes to games.
Is anyone in a position to make a judgement as to whether the quality of the user experience and games is likely to improve in the near future?

IMO they (all the producers) have to do something about battery life.
The screens are getting bigger and bigger, GPUs more powerful.
The modern smartphones are less and less "wireless" - they need to be charged too often.
The next generation will be even worse than current in this area.

I only play a handful of games, but I can't tell the difference. Angry Birds and Paper Toss are identical on both platforms. Part of the problem is half-hearted efforts by developers for the Android platform. They've recently recognised it's growth, but iPhone is still more well known and more prevalent in widespread use particularly in the younger demographic who like wasting money on useless crap (i.e. silly apps), so there's usually more effort and polish put into most apps. I think developers seeking to make money also prefer the strict rigidity of the app store with iPhone
It's improving all the time as Android grows, Words With Friends is due out sometime soon

Which phone to choose guys?

Guys I am planning to buy a new phone. I want your suggestions about choosing the right one. I am relying on good battery life and phone which has a good amount of development going on (custom roms, kernels, miui, cyanogenmod, ics etc.) coz I love to fiddle with devices a lot. My current choices are :
Samsung galaxy R
Samsung galaxy S plus
HTC Desire S
HTC Incredible S
These are my options but senior members can suggest me phone in range of 23000 INR ($475).

I came from the I9003, and I am pleased with the development of IncS, the Desire S might have more development. Samsung S+ and R both have the same level of development as the I9003.
Other impressions are: the sound quality of the earpiece of the IncS is not so good compared to the I9003. Music playback using headphone from the IncS is virtually unlistenable to me, the quality is too f***ed up for me, even worse than the I9003 which is not so good by my standard. Although this is kinda biased considering my audio setup on my PC is about a grand and my headphone setup is around 600$. Otherwise I'm more pleased with HTC firmwares and AOSP development here compared to Samsung.

None, if I got a new phone on a budget, Id get a Sensation or Galaxy s II, the prices will really drop as the new phones are released in the next few months. They both have great developer support, and are dual core
Both those Samsungs dont have great developer support, and the HTC's mentioned are not cutting edge tech.. just my two cents

When I upgraded it was a mere 25$ spent, but yes now that you mentioned it, it is kinda a sidegrade that you only should do if you can do it cheap or you are fed up with the development of the I9003, which I did.

The htc Evo 3d is well within your price range, its got a larger screen, dual core processor, more powerful gpu and better dev support as well as being 3d.
Also the Droid razr is another high end phone that I have read many good reviews about. The price has dropped somewhat, and you could find one within your budget if you looked hard enough.
It really depends on what your criteria is, I personally have mixed feelings about the IncS and probably HTC phones in general. I also own a very low budget device, a huawei u8180 and I am actually 10x more satisfied with that than what I am with this phone. There's really only one dev with one rom/kernel worth using, but he is absolutely amazing, and constantly updating and improving his work, squeezing every last drop of performance out of such a low end budget device.
I could go on, but I don't want to upset the few devs who thankfully haven't forgotten that we still exist.

Samsung R is the way to go. Because it is basically a stripped down version of the Galaxy S2. But the things is, it isn't available any more in india in many shops and THERE IS NO CYANOGENMOD FOR IT! Not official at least.
The second choice would be the Incredible S
Reasons:
1. Cyanogen mod 7. Official
2. better screen than the Desire
3. Better camera than any of the mentioned phones
4. SRS audio is amazing. And add to that, if you root it, you get DSP manager and trust me, after DSP, there isn't anything better than this device.
5. Overclocks up to 1.5 GHz. That's more than the amount on the Galaxy
6. 768MB ram
7. The softkeys can be completely made to disappear. Once rooted though.

I had encounters with Samsung phones and I'm very disappointed in them , I'd go with a HTC and between Desire and Incredible definitely go for the Incredible S , I just gone from desire to incredible myself and its quite a jump , much much much better performance not laggy nor choppy , much more dev , love the S-LCD nice colored screen , the firm shape and the 8mp camera is just an overkill ^^

It's a script. The lights are based on an LCD display and aren't like the ones on Galaxy phones where the logo just gets lighted up and it's there even when the phone is off.
Here's the Method:
1) Download and install GScript Lite from Android Market. Its free

2) Download the attached gscript.zip file and extract the two files buttonledON.sh & buttonledOFF.sh to SDCard/gscript (make "gscript" folder in root of sdcard if not present already)
3) Run Gscript Lite. Allow root permission .Click Menu >Add Script.
If u have placed the two script files in correct folder, they will appear. Open and save them both. (dont edit anything other than the Name..you can change it to LED ON/OFF... Run one to turn off led light, other to turn on back to norma)
4) Two icons of script will be there to let you turn on/off those led lights.

You just got to be rooted that's all.
And mine doesn't switch on and off on will but is actually controlled by the baclklight settings. Eg: At lowest light, the Softkeys won't be viewable!
But of course you can access them. And they're brightest when you make the backlight the brightest. more convinient this way!

Time to upgrade....

I have been enjoying sgs experience for quite a long time now( I still do) but as device is slowly aging I think its time to upgrade. I'm currently waiting for release of sgs3. What do you suggest, is it worth waiting for it or its better to go and buy galaxy nexus or sgs2? Are there more devices worth buying right now?

Personally I would wait for the S3 then do some comparisons between phones from different vendors.
One good site to make some comparisons is gsmarena.com , they generally have good reviews and very in depth information about the phone's hardware and specifications too

Just wait for the S3, I heard that it will have a quad core cpu, so it will beat the S2 and all predecessors for sure
gsmarena is also a great site, personally I use it everytime I am looking for something about phones they are great!
galaxy S is still a great phone, if it's slow then you can do a hard reset, maybe it helps with something, and by installing a "simple" rom you can also achieve more performance!

I think it's to soon decide.
U need to know if the phone will be common and then decide cuz probably Samsung will stop developing versions for it and then you depend on the community (look for example Galaxy s 9000 and ICS).

However I'm not getting new phone because sgs is slow or things like that.....and yea I decided, I'm gonna get sgs3, ty both

There is nothing to suggest that the S3 will not be a popular phone.
Unless Samsung make a complete **** up with it, it will be as popular as the SGS and SII.
All the phone manufacturers will at some point stop ROM development at some point with a phone.
Go talk to owners of other Android phones and you will find many are not happy with their device not having ICS support.
There is no reason why the SII won't be able to support the next version of Android (and beyond) and the same will apply to the S3.
If Samsung do carry on support the phones then great but if they give up after a 2 year cycle on a product, I can see their point.
OP, my contract is up for renewal in July and depending on the reviews of the S3 (I think they will be good), providing I can get one for a nominal upgrade free, I'll get one otherwise I'll get an S2.

Hi there, If I were you, I wouldn't hesitate for a second: go for the Samsung Galaxy S4! I had a HTC Mozart and then a Windows Phone 8X, which I swapped for my old HTC One S and I couldn't be happier. I don't think I'm looking back any time soon!

Actually, I've used both Android and Windows Phone a lot, and I can tell you that Android is as smooth as WP. Obviously, if you use a crappy Android phone, it's not going to be smooth, but I guess the same applies to WP. As for the Xperia ZR, it looks like a great phone, but I've never been a fan of Sony phones; it's just a matter of personal preference. But I can assure you that either of the phones you are considering is going to be as smooth as any Lumia 925, Samsung ATIV or HTC 8X.

"The same" doesn't actually apply to WP - the minimum requirements for WP7 and WP8 devices are high enough to ensure good performance of the OS (Android has no such restrictions).
Android will get worse battery life and (especially depending on where you get your apps from, and no, XDA isn't even always safe) a higher risk of malware, but you do also get a larger number of apps and a more tweakable system. Also, the S4 has better specs than any current WP8 device (my phone, the Samsung ATIV S, has hardware equivalent to that of the S3).
My boss has the Sony phone, and has had nothing but trouble with it. The features they advertise are there, and work well, but the USB port failed quickly (makes charging and synching tricky), the external speakers (including speakerphone) are very soft, and it has had various other problems. Definitely not recommended, unless the consideration of "high-end waterproof phone" overrules everything else.
