[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab Keyboard Dock Recall in Australia - Galaxy Tab Accessories

I have an ECR-K10AWE official Samsung Galaxy Tab Keyboard purchased in Australia. The printed keys are US keyset. However, they keycodes it is transmitting are UK (for example, 'at' is under 'double quote', and.. well... instead of 'hash/US pound' I get 'UK pound' symbol..
The only place that this really bugs me is on twitter. But as I walked past the shop I bought it from the other day, I thought I'd ask the sales guy if he'd heard of others having similar issues. Unfortunately, not only did he tell me he hadn't because no one else had bought it yet, he had in fact received a recall notice 'Sounded like some firmware issue'. Which would near tally with my experience. Unfortunately, he'd only heard of a recall not a replacement program.
I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to flash the keyboard, or some other hack, so that it transmits US character set? I'm not particularly interested in rooting the GTab itself until I get a GTab2 or similar nextgen device. Far more interested in messing with the keyboard firmware, given the lack of promise of a 'proper' working one coming forth from Samsung.

I don't believe the keyboard is transmitting "key codes" as such - if I change the language on my Tab to something else, my keyboard acts as if it were in that language.
Have you tried setting your Tab to a different locale, perhaps US English, to see if it makes a difference?

Dave

I knew I left out some vital info. DOH!
This happens no matter which English locale variant I use. US English, NZ English, SA English, AU English all behave as if the keyboard had UK/IE English characters printed on top of them.
edit:
It might be noteworthy that this unit, sold in AU, has a three language manual; English, French and Spanish. Usually over this way we score English and two or three far east Asian languages in our manuals.

I can confirm issue is not with Keyboard but with tab SW itself. I tried Apple Wieless Keyboard and Samsung Keyboard Dock both and got the same results with both. @=" and #=UK Pound.
Both keyboards can't be wrong and so Tab version in Australia is to be blamed. Hope it gets fixed in next upgrade.

Thanks for this. It made me remember to try my Freedom Pro keyboard on it (haven't used it in a while). This uses a third party driver, and does correctly pick up the US keymap (even though the only English layout on offer from the driver is enUK).
I might try some other BT keyboards I have access to, see what transpires. But given your report, I'm inclined to agree this does seem like a Tab side issue, rather than the keyboard. I'll get back to my supplier on this, he's a bit more switched on than your average phone store geek. He's frustrated that Sammy won't explain why there's a recall on the keyboards, this may give him a bit more ammo.
Cheers

Kaiser source in Taipei?

Is there a good place in Taipei to find HTC phones - particularly the Kaiser at this point at a reasonable price?
I'll be there on business in a couple of months - and it'd be cool to come back with a new phone....
TIA,
Richard
I share the same question but would add to it - is it possible to find there English ROM? Does the keyboard also contains Chinese characters? Is there a place that sells the international version?
No one sells it YET
There are many release dates circulating, but they are all guesses, They people who do know can't tell us).
Once you can buy it, you should be able to get an English ROM. If my experience of buying phones in Dubai is anything to go by, they stocked Arabic and Western phones, I'd suspect you won't have a problem.

I am in Dubai and the keypad depends on the model you are buying. I recently got a new HP laptop and it did not have arabic keys but most other laptops had.

I live in Taiepi and have had no luck getting any HTC PDA's here. The reason is that up to now the only available models come with Chinese and if one flashes an upgrade with English, the warranty is shot. If that does not bother you, then just be aware that the keyboard will have both English and Chinese on it. As I have lived here for almost 31 years I have found that you can get used to keyboards with English and Chinese on it. Since I bought my first computer in 1980 I have never owned a keyboard without Chinese on it.
If you are going to be in Hong Kong too you could pick up an English model. I am not sure if the warranty would still cover you when you return home. Before, the people here told me to buy their PDAs in HK, but to be aware that if the darn thing needed repairs, it would have to be done in Hong Kong.

Oh, you can buy the phones here, no problem, with the Dopod brand, or CHT (Chung Hwa Telecom), and now HTC brand, but the problem is again warranty, if you change from Chinese to English. As you know, a PDA phone is not like a smart phone that you can change the language just by going through menus.
Frustrating for me that these things are made here but I have not been able to buy an English model, but see the Chinese versions sold all over the place here, including several stores within 15 minutes of walking of where I live. I exhausted Dopod's customer service email with complaints about lack of English models here............
HTC and Dopod are of course Taiwanese companies.
Chinese to English
You can flash an English ROM (which voids the warranty).. then, if some unforeseen problem occurs, flash back to a Chinese Rom to send back for repair (re-instates warranty coverage.)
I have a CHT9000 (from Taiwan) which I have flashed (too many times.. back and forth).....I don't think "they" can detect which roms have been flashed to the phone.
Not sure if Kaiser has been CID-unlocked yet.."if not" only a matter of time.
If you can't flash back to Chinese, before repair... you are obviously screwed.
Edit: didn't realize the date..
Tytn II in Taipei
EDIT: me neither :-(
The current price is around 780 USD (23.500 NTD) here in TPE, but as mentionned by another earlier, only CHT ROM.
I bought my Tytn II in HK at a cheaper price than here in TW.
Side kick is that I need to go to HK if my TW device gets broken under warranty
No

Kaiser available in HK now....

Stock seems to be plentiful. BTW, what is the hardware GPS com port on the Kaiser?

Got mine without a contract at telco (CSL) for HKD5871. List price here is HKD6180. Most of the retail shops are selling @ HKD6080 with screen protectors and 1GB MicroSD.
FX HKD/USD 7.8
BTW, the phone can be had for around HKD3600 with a 12-month contract of at least HKD200/month.
Hope this will shed some clue for people in Singapore or elsewhere in Asia.....
below list price..
is there any shop that sells below list price?
English version
Is it avaiable in English Version???

English and Chinese. Some computer shops are selling HKD100 lower with 1GB MicroSD and screen protector.... Not much discount at the moment.
GPS MAP
based on I saw on their website, it comes with Mapking, in this case, what country map is included with the unit? Does it comes with any free maps?
As per everyone's experience, which place is the cheapest place to buy PDA phones? Wanchai ? Mongkok? ShamShuiPo?

Default buying a german stellar (kaiser i think) off ebay - live in uk

Sorry every1 i posted this in the general section , i had plenty of reads but no advice so im posting it here cos the auction im interested in ends very soon. 'just wanna buy a german kaiser and use it in the uk by flashing it with english rom and using in uk network' u don't have to read the rest just answer me this please. is it possible, thanks guys
hello everyone, im glad to be back! haven't used this forum in well over a year and ive missed it. ive decided to get another ppc. i'm looking at getting the tytn 2 off ebay. basically i want just the most powerful spec ppc. apart from the shift and advantage (cant afford them) this seems the best choice. also i would like a qwerty keyboard although b4 i got by with the spb full keyboard but now i want a qwerty one. if anyone can suggest any other ppc's with a high spec let me know plz. i didn't wanna spend more than a 200 quid but after watching ebay for 3 days it seems i have to.i've got 300 quid but for that i'd like a ppc a decent memory card and some bluetooth stereo headphones such as the sony ones. luckily ive got still got loads software (i.e. tomtom) from b4 but that's from older os'es. the one on ebay is 200 buy it now but its shipped from germany.the whole lisitng is in german but at the bottom is says 'attention int. buyers this phone has german software' surely i can just flash it with an english rom such as dutty's? is that correct?just as i was leaving the forums last time. xda-dev had 2 take all the roms down due to a copyright warning from ms. does this mean i have to cook my own? sounds daunting. basically i just wanna know if this german stellar is gonna b compatible on english nets? and if anyones got any suggestions for another ppc. sorry for posting in the general section, maybe this could have went in a different board but i've got 21 hours or so till the auction ends. thanks guys. glad 2 b bk, gareth
p.s. i've got an almost new orbit with a cracked screen. anyone good at fitting screens, or wanna buy it? or sell me a screen lol. ( i still want a newer ppc though) this is why i left the boards- cracked me screen didnt i lol.
Default cmon ppl
cmon guys sum1 must b able 2 spare me a minute. the auction ends soon. 'can i buy a german kaiser, flash it wiv english rom and use on uk network'
no man. most of the times the device ID does not match along with the carrier rom of other operators. so if your device is german operator specific, i dont think it will match along with ur desired rom updated. and since u r planning to buy from ebay, you only have a less chance of getting the full advantage of knowing you can rom update into english
German to English ROM change should be OK

I don't think you should have any trouble - people take devices that started out with WorldWideEnglish on them and flash to different language ROM's all the time. The hardware is the same, the keyboard layout may be slightly different. You will have to follow directions here and Hard-SPL unlock, and may need to do SIM-unlock, but I know it's all do-able.
thanx 4 the reply
thanks a lot guys,well.. what do i do here? 2 pieces of conflicting info from 2 experienced guys. shall i take this as it should be ok but theres a possibility of it going wrong? i called uk 02 tech support, they wouldn't tell me anything 'cant make any guarantees, we dont support this etc.etc.'the guy has posted it on uk ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=270225685569&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=017
is it not worth the risk then do you think
n e got 1 for sale? lol
i wouldnt listen to what ayyu3m said at all. true the ID will be different, but that is one of the reasons we use hardspl. we can bypass the CID and install rom from other kaisers. no problems whatsoever, expect maybe the keyboard layout
yea i agree, cid is counrty id isnt it? still not sure what 2 do. ill have to check the standard german keyboard layout. 200 quid is alot to waste but then again i could whack it back on ebay.has anyone actually tried this?cheers 4 ur reply m8, and the others all appreciated
CID=carrier ID

Unidentified Tytn II Keyboard

I bought a Tytn II a while back and was looking through the various known keyboard images and didn't see one that matched mine. Anybody have any idea what region this is supposed to be?
lol?
Probably some asian dialect. I would guess its chinese but might be japanese.
But im really suprised that you couldn't figure that out by yourself.

Looking for AZERTY keyboard...

Hi,
I'm looking for a keyboard-case, but can't find an azerty keyboard, only qwerty.
It exists ?
Have a nice day.
I doubt it, there's just not enough of a market outside of Germany for them. I had a quick look on Amazon.de and they have a couple of iPad ones but that's all.
/edit oops, might have been better looking for a French one but still the same problem.
Okay, thanks for your answer. It sucks...
So I will take a case AND a bluetooth keyboard, but all in one solution is better !
btw: azerty is french qwertz is german
