[Q] Looking for an "offline Vogue os" - Touch CDMA Android Development

I've had this working Sprint touch sitting around doing not much of anything, its not activated, nor do I want it to be, I'm really trying to make a large gaudy wrist computer (think pipboy) but have been trying to get a debian Vogue build up and running. Honestly I didn't think it'd would be as frustrating as its been.
tl;dr Offline only Android, Winmo, *nix.... builds for the touch 6900 all i need is enough to word process have a clock(to make it a watch) and maybe one or two apps

Well, you have the ability to prevent the ppp session from starting using atools, so you could have a vogue, with android and whatever market apps you want, that would get cell time. I have a bad esn sprint vogue that still gets time.
I think someone had posted a working linux build somewhere back in here... hang on...
EDIT:
Ha! Knew it was here somewhere...
Debian on the Vogue
Also, you may want to see if there's anything helpful here:

Doesn't need airtime, and I've tried the debian route for like 7 hours, followed all steps and all it got me is a blank white screen.

What do you mean by 'doesn't need airtime'? No cellular radio whatsoever?

Wanting to tether my hero to Linux, HELP!

Ok. So I have an HTC Hero CDMA with Fresh ROM 1.1. I have the wifi-tether app installed, but my desktop does not have wireless. I normally use PdaNet on Windows 7, but I am now dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows 7 Ultimate. I want to USB tether my phone to either Ubuntu 9.10 or OpenSuse 1.1. I have tried the little "Sprint MNS rig" and it fails for me every time and every way. I am open to anything! I will even wipe my phone and install a new ROM if needed! I just really want to USB tether my phone to Linux! Thanks!
Unfortunatly, the USB tether app doesn't work on our Hero.
Have you tried running PDAnet in Wine?
This worked for me.

Well I used to tether my diamond to linux all the time and afaik you should be able to get it.
Look up the guide that uses the race condition(enabling sharing before connection grabs), it's on this forum.
Setup a dial up connection in KPPP or w/e your choice is. Have the connection dial #777 and fill in anything for user/pass and that may work.
Best I can think of at the moment.
ROFLMAO.
That link works for me too.
Anyhow i can't think of a laptop that has windows 7 that doesn't have wireless? whats the use having a laptop without wireless? where did you get this state of the art beast. does it have bluetooth?

Maybe you should actually read some of the things you google.
The first link talks about MNS, which he said does not work.
The second link is the same thing.
The third link is this thread.
The fourth link is also MNS.

If you're going to attempt to be a smart ass, at least read the post first instead of seeing what other people say and repeat them.
AFAIK, most desktops do not come with built in wireless cards. Seems you can pick up a small selection of motherboards from Newegg that have a/b/g, but that's about it.
I repeat however, have you tried PDAnet in Wine?
My Windows 7 desktop doesn't have wireless either.
But wireless pci cards are getting cheaper as we speak. That's an option I guess?

Hey smart ass? First off, I said DESKTOP. Secondly, Lets say I DID have a laptop with Windows 7 and no wireless, you mocking it is NOT solving my problem, which is why your post should be reported for low quality. Lastly, "whats the use having a laptop without wireless?" Isn't even a sentence. Stay off my threads. Thanks
And to the guy recommending PdaNET on Wine, No I haven't dude I am looking into it right now.
Here's something else to look into
http://code.google.com/p/azilink/
If you can get the race condition to work, the KPPP connection should work.
If not, try the VPN.
As far as using Wired Tether on 2.1, it seems it runs, the Su request goes through, the computer make the "hardware plugged in noise," but as far as getting data to transfer, nothing.
However I'm at my Mom's house, and her USB ports are all screwed up, so my tests are inconclusive.

Tethering works just fine for me. It comes up as a wifi access point in network manager, and it also comes up in iwlist for an essid. im using gentoo btw
And im using the wireless tether app which comes in most custom roms to do my tethering
you can download the said app here : http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Wired tether(the app) doesn't work. I've tried on 1.6, 2.01 and 2.1. It's an incompatibility with our Heros it seems.
And at above poster, he said NOT wireless.

Secondly, You must not have learned your lesson about READING THE POSTS huh? I said I have been searching since 5 A.M. for an answer but all have failed, or aren't companionable.
Lastly, I have already found that. For some reason, I can not establish a connection. It will not even pick up the fact that there is a wired connection.
P.S. Proxoid is NOT what I am looking for. It does not connect like an internet connection and I have to go through every program I want to use for the internet and change the proxy settings manually. Not only that, it lags, disconnects, and the response time is terrible.

Oh, my b. And in the 2.1 build, if you go into wireless settings and enable mobile network sharing, it comes as an interface usb0 in which you can dhcpcd it to gain internet access
I haven't tested this, but you could probably get the same usb0 interface using this app: http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/

Backwards haret

so i flashed my phone with myns warm donut and i must say i love it and android on the vogue has come a long way since i started using it.
but i have seen other people having this problem too, after activating the vogue they werent able to iota so they could get internet working on sprint, so my question is, is it possible for somebody to make a haret version that would book into windows mobile so people could program and activate their phones then just reboot back to android
just flash back. use windows. flash back to android. you can back up your data using replimenu (install menu). we still have things to perfect on android, I seriously doubt any devs would put their time into this.

[Q] Downgrade or Root 2.27.651.6

I was selling my phone and i decided to give it the latest update from sprint now its restarting randomly every time. Is anyone know how to fix this restarting problem or can anyone help me root it or downgrade it to something else PLEASE??
2.27.651.6 is the software that the phone as now
Throw DarchDroid on it.
Use this. It is the original unpatched 2.27.651.5 RUU upgrade utility. It can be used to downgrade.
Credits go to Regaw for his link.

I know for sure it works because I've used it to downgrade it a lot. Once you do, if you'd like to root, follow Regaw's Guide (Link)

I'm afraid not. That RUU I posted is specifically for the 2.1 release with the rooting exploit possibility.
Before dumping 2.1, I urge you to give a custom rom a try. It really makes a world of difference,

Thanks...can you recommend a "basic" version? I would just like a clean fast-running OS. No bells and whistles.
I originally wanted BT to work with my pdanet, but can live without that.
I also tried running a hack to get the wireless to see ad hoc networks, but it didn't work either. It too would be nice, but having a phone that doesn't crash would be nicer.
The change of the Maps annoys me the most. The old system used a call-in voice recognition system that worked. The new OS uses "on-board" voice recognition that is the worst I have EVER seen. It can't get ANY words right.
So, you're trying to drive and yelling at the phone for not getting the address correctly, and the type-in option keeps changing screens, closing the keyboard, etc. It's so absolutely useless, I'm shocked any idiot ever decided it was good enough to get though beta.
Thanks,
Greg

Well, it is certainly subjective, but yes, a non-Sense (ha!) Rom does look much more basic. My advice is to try RegawMOD, (the non-themed version) its incredibly fast, and comes with Sense.
By the way, you may be confusing the Maps app with the Navigation app (they are two different apps). The navigation app still does voice recognition.

Thanks, I'll try it out.
Yes, I meant Navigation. The voice recognition on the new Navigation doesn't work at all. Zero zilch nada. It can't recognize the simplest words. "San Jose" becomes "Ben Lomond" or some random city on the other side of the country (it has no geographical sense).
The older system (tied to 1.5, I guess?) had a call-in system that analyzed the voice print offline, on a big computer I guess, and sent the link to your phone. It seemed to work nearly every time.
There's a Stock 2.1 ROM out there if you really want to keep it basic. Just look in the Development section.

Great...
Thought I had DC 2.09 installed clean...until it started to lag, so I rebooted. Now I'm stuck at work without a phone that works, since it's stuck in a bootloop.
F this...Sprint sent me a new phone. After I confirm it's 1.5, this 2.1-infected POS goes back.

Oh, and there are probably no 1.5 Hero's at Sprint anymore. They're most likely ALL 2.1
Hi, guys. I need help but I don't want to start an entirely new thread so I'll add it here.
I just got a new Sprint HTC Hero and it comes preloaded with 2.27.651.6, and I'm trying to downgrade to 2.27.651.5 but when I open RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe it opens with a loading bar, the bar completes, and then the installer closes. But there's still an instance of it in Task Manager.
I've been struggling with this for days, if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
Edit: I'm on Windows XP SP3, my anti-virus and firewall are disabled, and my phone is connected to HTC Sync. I've also tried in Safe Mode.
2.27.651.6 fix issues
hey i just went and got a new cdma hero from sprint because my old on had hardware issues... well i looked and low and behold software build 2.27.651.6... so I get the RUU installer and it keeps giving me an error... i get the progress bar then the verifying info on your phone. then I get error message (170) connection error... its saying my phone isn't connected so i do the fastboot method and still nothing can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?
I'm no expert, but I think I read that if you run the ruu twice, back to back, it will work. I believe it's in regaw's thread somewhere .
For the connection error, do you have the latest htc sync? It has updated drivers.

I'd you are on the .6 build there is a new root tool available. You should be able to do a search for the thread. I'll look for here in a sec.

I can't figure out how to post a link from the mobile app but the thread is in the dev section posted by Zenulator.

A Few Noob Questions

Ordered HD7 should have in a few days.
I got the Tmobile version if that makes a difference.
1. Do the apps purchased in market for HD2 be compatible with HD7?
2. Does HD7 have the ability to act as a wifi router like the HD2 does?
3. Do they use the same charging plug?
Thank you to who ever provides answers and not flame.
I have sat here over and hour reading these threads, not clear answers to what I am asking.
I do wish some one would do a feature by feature comparison of the two phones. I got this one simply because I am tired of the lag and problems with my HD2. I know we can flash roms and all that, not to my skills or time frame, i need a phone that the developers provide what every phone should have, if this one does not offer that, then back to nokia we go .
Thank you again.
Hi,
1: No it is a completely different marketplace and apps for Windows Mobile 6.5 are not compatible with Windows Phone 7.
2: No, at the moment you cannot use the phone as a Wifi Router although that may be possible in the future.
3: I'm not too sure, the HD7 uses a micro USB port. From what I've seen it appears that the HD2 uses micro as well but I can't be sure.
If you're looking for a phone that Just works, then Windows Phone 7 is the way to go. No ROM flashes or tweaking to get it better as it's all good out of the box.
Enjoy it!
Thank you, but not good news.
I take it that the windows 7 app market is probably much smaller.
I use the wifi router feature all the time when at clients locations and need to get on line with my lap top. This is a major problem, do you know if it can be used via usb and 3G?
Thank you again.

no it can not be used to tether at this time. Only for the lg and samsung has tethering been figured out. The phone is capable of it, you just have to get into a hidden menu that has not been found on the htc hd7 yet.
uhhh, the wp7 marketplace already has over 2k apps the first month...

Any idea of a time line or has any one heard of when we will be able to use the wifi router feature on this phone? without this feature, the phone becomes useless to me for work

Just got a Rogers Captivate (i896) - New to Android & Rooting, Couple questions

Hey everyone, I just recently got a Samsung Captivate with Rogers, which is the i896.
I've been hearing a lot about rooting lately and i'm starting to understand a little more about what it is exactly. I'm interested in the idea that it can help speed up the phone and allow for more apps, but I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find the most recent way to root a ROGERS Captivate? I was reading around and read that the "One click fix" does not work anymore
2) Will rooting my phone change the interface of the phone?
3) If something goes wrong and my phone doesn't root, can I go back to the default settings easily?
I might have more questions later on but thats it for now. I'd just also like to hear your opinions on rooting and what exactly YOU have been able to do with your phone by rooting.
Thanks!
welcome ill answer your qs first then ill give you some links to help you out
A)rooting and flashing roms (2 diff things) are easiest done from STOCK 2.1 (which you should have) if you plan on flashing custom roms DONT do the rogers/samsung keis firmware update. it changes the recovery to 3e. (ink below if needed)
B) rooting does not change the interface. ROMS DO
C) if you cant successfully root, nothing has changed. you should be able to tho. and you can UNROOT, and wipe to factory too. for warranty repairs and they will never know.
OPPINION:
custom roms are the way to go, more current, full featured complete and on time, cutomizable, fun, and brain-power using than stock roms.
MY ADVICE: DO IT but TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ. I READ FOR 3 or 4 days before i touched a thing!! and still had very minor issues and things that had to be ironed out. dont let that scare you. its a learning experience. hopefully with the links i give you you will have less SEARCHING TO DO. but you my freind, are in the right fourm and right section, too! i have a good feeling about you already!
YOU CAN DO IT WATERBOY!!!

Typically its best to read around but you can use the following for rooting and unrooting
It doesn't change the interface

Hey there, the rogers captivate is the same as the at&t captivate. I found a rogers phone in the snow, wiped, rooted and unlocked it. Installed at&t firmware and then flashed serendipity. I'm using it on telus no problem. Everything in this captivate forum will work great.

First of all, thank you guys so much for giving me real replies instead of a bunch of "Go read for yourself" or "try the search button" lol... I've been doing some reading but I needed to ask a few direct questions.
@Trusselo, i'm not too ignorant to computers. I know my way around a computer and used to do some web design and basic coding so i'm somewhat okay.
My only concern is that once i've rooted my phone, I have to use some sort of unix/linux commands to work around my phone and do things? Is this true? Also, I read that the rooted version has a different keyboard? I still have a hard time getting used to this touchscreen board.
SIDE QUESTION ABOUT CAPTIVATE AND WIFI: This is my biggest problem right now, its actually a small problem but it gets annoying. Basically, my WiFi stays connected when i'm at home but sometimes it seems like it slows done or the connection lags or even stops working. I can usually tell if this is happening because pages don't load fast enough in the browser or don't load at all. While this is happening, my wifi connection still says "Connected" though. I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Just rooting the phone does not change the interface at all. Rooting just allows you access to the locked system files so you can change them.
Also you won't have to use terminal commands to do hardly anything, but it would be a good practice to learn how to use it.
From there you can change your keyboard if you like. There are a few keyboards out there that are better than the stock keyboard is, as far a functionality.
Be warned once you get onto flashing and modding your phone, its like an addiction, and you probably wont be able to stop.

Hey there, the rogers captivate is the same as the at&t captivate. I found a rogers phone in the snow, wiped, rooted and unlocked it. Installed at&t firmware and then flashed serendipity. I'm using it on telus no problem. Everything in this captivate forum will work great.

Did you try and find the actual owner first?

Ya, but no one called the phone. The screen was locked and I couldn't get into the phone. I think it was outside for a while, reported lost and deactivated.

i really hope that you didnt think i was accusing you of not being good with computers or being patronizing, i was just trying to provide you (or anyone else that reads this) with as much info as i could, while not doing the work for you.
terminal commands: ive never had to use them, no adb shell, no terminal emulator on phone, although it wouldnt be outside of my skill, i just prefer to do it without learning something i dont need to. (yet.. still thinking about learning some apping)
keyboard: rooting does not change any part of the UI at all, all rooting does is allow you to access (read / write / copy /delete) protected system files. And you can only do those scary things with use of other root apps after rooting your phone.
wifi: this is why some people flash new modems, if you still have issues and really want to send it back for warranty, dont worry, you can have it back good as new in no time!
Not too sure what you mean by flash new modems... ? And I wasn't accusing you of anything lol. Just letting you know that i'm not 100% dumb when it comes to computer but even then I don't know if I would be ready to use typed commands and stuff to use my phone.

The modem is simply what the phone uses for connectivity. It is a separate piece of the firmware that can be flashed on its own. It is a topic that is a little beyond the scope of this post. However, there is a stickied thread in the Captivate development forum called 'the modem thread' that outlines a lot of the information. The main reason many people do this change is that some experience better connectivity, lower battery consumption, and some other benefits. Again modems are beyond the scope of this post, so I encourage you to read that sticky, as there can be some pitfalls to changing modems. Best of luck and enjoy the great phone!
Oh okay thank you. I thought you meant I would have to take my phone back and get a new one. The WiFi works fine, its just that I have to disconnect, enter my wifi password, then reconnect sometimes for it to work properly.
Do you mean that the WiFi is something that can be changed after the phone is rooted to work better?
Can't say for sure, but it's always worth rooting anyway.
