[Q] Shortcuts possible to sdcard2? - G Tablet Themes and Apps

Hi, I'm running Vegan 5.1 on Gtab. I know I can put shortcuts on the desktop but that isn't what Im trying to do. For instance I want to use a audio or video player that searches by default for files in folders on sdcard such as audio or video. When the program searches /sdcard/video I would like to redirect it to /sdcard2/video. Wouldn't a shortcut in one directory redirect to another location and be "visible" to the host program? I'm trying to get audio and video players to find sdcard2. If a shortcut existed to the directory or file itself wouldn't that work? Looking around I don't see much about this, and it may not be possible with android. The only information I see is about shortcuts on the desktop. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try this- ../sdcard2/(target directory)

Thanks, but I don't understand how to apply this. Lets say I have a video file at /sdcard2/video/movie.mp4. If I could make a shortcut to the movie.mp4 file and place it in /sdcard/video, then movie player program would be able to see it. Since I can't change the path for the movie player to search, I'm going to have to bring the files to where they can be found. I want to use sdcard2 for multimedia storage and put shortcuts to video and music on internal sdcard. I can mke shortcuts to the desktop all day long, but I can't find how to move them into a different folder. Also I don't know where the desktop folder, if indeed there is such a folder is located. If I could find the desktop folder I could copy or move the shortcut from there. Like I say, this may not even be possible.

you can always use astro file manager to open the video/audio file. i have the same problem opening videos that only vital player recognizes, but it only gives the option to sdcard not sdcard2 or usb. so i search for the file in astro and open with vital.

I know this is an old thread, but here's what I have been doing in VEGAn 5.11.
Make a directory called sdcard2 in /mnt/sdcard -- you can do this with a file manager or in the shell. You only have to do this once
Open a shell.
Enter:
su
First time you do this you'll have to acknowledge root. If you tell it to remember, you won't have to do it again.
Type
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard2 /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2
That's it. Now you will have an sdcard2 folder nested in the sdcard folder. The only problem is it won't survive a reboot. I was looking for /etc/fstab to do this permanently but there is only a vold.fstab file so not sure if that will work or not. Need to try it and see I suppose.

Re Calkiuns ROM I believe it's native...

I actually have a few movies saved in SD card 2 I long press chose shortcuts, astro, scroll to SD card2 and choose the movie witch puts it on my homescreen I then put them all in a movie folder on the homescreen... hope that helps.. I'm running tnt lite 4.3

nice tip about the shortcuts. however, it doesn't work if you have an application that only works with the sd card
besides, I can imagine wanting to start other things like sshd

One other thing I've noticed. If you do the bind mount (https://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager looks like it would be good for doing this on boot, btw) then putting the tablet in USB file transfer mode just spins forever. Well maybe it just takes a long time searching sdcard2 but I finally cancelled it. The solution is:
umount /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2
Then do the USB operation.

HOW TO - Hide Certain Media Files from Music Player and Gallery (5/30/2009)

Have you ever been listening to your Britney Spears, Daft Punk or Tupac and suddenly you start hearing files that aren't music (i.e ringtones, notification sounds, etc.)? I find it pretty annoying that there is no current method to hide these files from the music player, until now.
I would like to give credit to Scheff's Blend for this idea, and after tinkering with the the doom game folder on my memory card, I found a file called ".nomedia". Within that same folder was over 100 sound files for the game doom, BUT my music player was not reading that specific folder.
I figured it had to do something with that ".nomedia" file, and coincidentally it DID.
Instructions:
1) Download and unzip nomedia.zip somewhere onto your computer
2) Inside is a file called .nomedia, copy it into the directory of media files you want to hide
3) Reboot your phone
P.S. This also works for pictures and video files, BUT for newly taken pictures and videos, or music files added, a REBOOT is REQUIRED to hide them again.
WARNING: this completely hides the files from the phone, so they become unusable to any application until the .nomedia file is removed, and the phone is restarted. I know Scheff's Blend found a way to use those files while hiding them, yet I haven't. If anyone wants to help me out, feel free to.
I know a lot of people wanted to know how to do this, so sorry to any mod who notices I double posted, but I just realized I should have put it in this forum section to begin with. Feel free to delete the other thread in the "Dream" section.
Right on.
Another option that works is placing files you want hidden inside of a folder that starts with a period, such as ".hiddenfolder" or ".stuffimhiding"
Files and folders that begin with a period are considered hidden files by the Android OS and do not show up in Gallery or the music app
Thanks man..
was looking for a way to do this..

Thanks, thats good to know. But can they be used by lets say the dialer.apk as a ringtone?
I do the same thing with Astro. Like Dave said, keeping a folder with a dot at the front and anything within won't be read unless opened by Astro or renamed. This may not work for the ringtones, but its quicker than having to reboot if you just want to hide photos, documents, videos, etc.
I have problem where videos in folder w/ .nomedia get deleted at each reboot... Now using Cyan 4.1.11.1... Really weird. Each reboot deletes videos in those folders

[Request] Vpn Mounted Music Path

It would be great it I could set my phone on my VPN, which is possible now. But have that path accessed by the default music player as well as the storage card.
I know the pictures inside the MP3 would need to be sync or blocked but a 3G connection can handle 320kbps streaming no problem which is close the highest bitrate for mp3's with out breaking compatibility.
This would rock
Please
1Way
look at the orb client.. that is what it does.. you can have a home server with orb and share your music and videos, photos etc. over the net even through a vpn with orb client..
i havent tried any clients on my n1 however..
woudl still want this feature made but in the meantime thats for the idea.
Never tried Orb
=)
*** EDIT ***
Orb isn't for me and it has tons of complaints and not looking to use 3rd party software on pc but thanks for the information.
i use orb for some things but yeah from what ive read the android client sucks
look at subsonic, its very quick and easy to set up, but you said no pc software....hmm, good luck and post something if you find it.
I'm looking at doing exactly this when I get my replacement Nexus One. Mine is getting swapped for a warranty replacement right now.
I'm 99% positive this will work too. It will go something like this:
1. Establish a VPN connection to my NAS box that houses my music collection
2. Mount the smb share using CIFS (requires a rooted device with modded kernel containing the cifs module, such as Enomther The Official), info on doing this can be found here: android.doshaska.net/cifs
3. Load up my favorite music app and steam all my tunes over 3G!
UPDATE: This works, sort of...
Alright, so I have my NAS box (Netgear Stora) mounted to my Nexus One file system using cifs. I'm running Enomther's TheOfficial froyo rom, which comes with the cifs module. Here are the commands I used to get it mounted:
prerequisites:
1. WIFI Connection to same lan that the NAS box is connected to (presumably this will work over VPN also, need to test) EDIT: Confirmed this works over VPN also.
2. Rom with CIFS module compiled for the kernel (I used Enomther's TheOfficial Nexus1 Froyo)
commands I used to mount:
can be done from terminal emulator app or ADB Shell.
obviously change the IP address, mount locations, username, and password to your needs.
1. insmod /system/lib/modules/2.6.32.16-TheOfficial/cifs.ko
2. chmod 0777 /data
3. mkdir /data/mounted
4. busybox mount -t cifs //192.168.1.141/MyLibrary /data/mounted -o username=user,password=pass
5. cd /
6. cd data
7. cd mounted
8. chmod 0777 *
After this, you will be about to browse the mounted files and folders under the /data/mounted location either from the terminal emulator, ADB Shell, or a file explorer app on the android phone.
HOWEVER, here is my current issue. Hopefully someone can help me out here.
I can browse my files and see MP3's from the terminal or file explorer apps, I can even click on an MP3 and load it up into my music apps and play it, I use Meridian Media Player. However, if I go into Meridian and browse folders from that app, can I go into my mounted shares and music folders, and I can see all files in there EXCEPT mp3's. They just don't show up through any media app I've tried. However, like I said, I can see them just fine from a file explorer app such as EStrongs or from the terminal. Anyone have any idea why?
bump, need help

adding new music

When I add new music to my sdcard via PC or downloading through the browser it doesn't show up in the stock music app.
I can open the file directly through a file explorer or browser download screen and it will play but it will have no options eg: no repeat or add to playlist
Has anyone come across this? Once I restart the phone it will show up correctly.
I noticed there is a media scanner in spare parts or dev tools but it doesn't help.
mine shows up pretty quick, where do you put the music onthe sd card and how do you dismount the sd card?
Had that problem too, a long time ago. Probably even before I got my Nexus and used a Galaxy Spica. What I did was download songs to my SD card over the network using ES File Explorer. I think Android doesn't really monitor the SD card, all it does is scan when the SD card is mounted. This way, if you use USB to transfer media from your PC, and then disconnect it, it gets mounted again, and the media scanner will run and find the new files. Any other way is probably broken... maybe you can trigger a scan by unmounting and remounting the SD card (from the settings menu)...
I remember there being an application on the market, sdcard rescan or something that did that.
yup, thats normal, if you copy music to the sd through an application. android does not monitor the filesystem for new music files and only scans on mount (which happens on bootup).
but yeah ther was an app for that. does anybody have the name?
free

perfect.
thanks for the mount tips too. makes sense.
or if your rom comes with "Dev Tools" just open media scanner.
Good one, forgot about that.

[Q] adding a smb share in galleries

Hello,
a question: is it possible to manual add a smb share in the gallery?
If i use a program like ES file explorer i can see and acces my smb shares, but if i open gallery i don't see the smb share (nor can i add a smb share). It would be nice if this could be done somehow because another programm photoframe looks to the gallery to see what pictures are stored in the gallery. It would be great to use to phone as a digital slideshow when it's charging
My phone is rooted (i don't know if this can help to find a anser to my question). If anyone has an idea than that would be great.
I will take a guess:
1) The gallery application is updated with content every time you restart your phone or re-insert your SD card. Only at this point does it populate the gallery with content.
2) The smb share you see with the explorer app is not mounted onto your phone at all so even if you triggered a rescan of the sd card it would still miss the smb share unless the application provided some kind of a driver for the smb share.
3) A thought would be to try and make a directory on your SD card, mount the smb share to it and find a way to trigger the sd card scan ad hope that it picks it up.

[Q] How to add music and movies

First let me apologize, I have searched but could not find the answer. I am an utter noob. I just put cm7 using an SD card on my Nook Color. I was only able to do this by following the step by step instructions and youtube videos.
How do I add file to my Nook Color? I have some movies, music, and other files I would like to put on. I am technically very UNsavvy, so please hold my hand and do not assume I have any idea what to do.
Thank you in advance.
Or could you just provide a link to where I can find the info
connect your sd card to computer and drag and drop the files you want from computer to sd card
Im no dev, but this is what I do to get music, videos, pics and side load apps on my nook. first you'll need a file manager, I like Astro or Root Explorer both have free version at the market.
For music, videos and pics, its vary easy to put on your nook. all you have to do is to mount your nook's sd card from your pc with your USB cable. now on your sd card just make a new folder and name it "music" and just copy your music to this folder and thats it. for videos, and pictures its the same, just make a new folder and name it video and so on. now go to your video player and it should be available to you. the player that i like is call double twist its great for music and videos. now to side load apps all you have to do is to copy or download your apk to your sdcard and by using astro just navigate to the apk and press down on it, the file manager will launch and ask if you'll like to install it say yes and your done. I hope this is helpful.

I see what you did there. Thank you.
1. install SD card in Nook
2. Format SD card in Nook
3. Eject SD card from Nook and remove it.
4. Put SD in PC reader or whatever to mount on PC
5. Copy content to appropriate folders on the SD.
6. Eject SD from PC
7. Install SD in Nook.
8. If in doubt, reboot the Nook.
That's about as simple as I can describe the simplest and least technical method.
Most simple...
1. Plug your Nook USB cable into your computer.
2. On your computer, a Window should pop up that says a couple different things, you want to open folder or browse files, something along those lines.
3. This will open a file explorer, where you will see all of the folders on your nook. On a blank part of that screen, right click with your mouse and click New - then click Folder.
4. Name this folder music.
5. Open up My Computer (assuming you have Windows) in a separate window.
6. Drag any music files you want to put onto your Nook into the folder you created on your Nook.
7. On the bottom corner of your screen, there should be some kind of icon saying that your USB driver is connected. Click than and hit safely remove.
8. For videos do the same.
9. Unplug your Nook from the computer
10. Go to the Market from your nook and download a music player if you don't already have one installed.
11. Jam hard

I hope you have enough information now to get your music, video and pics to your nook. just a side note. as I mention earlier that I prefer double twist as my main media player, I forgot to mention air sync. its super cool and easy to use, it's very handy. you may want to check it out. but then again with all of these music and media clouds coming out.....
