Differences between APN toggle and "Use packet data" - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I've noticed that I experience far less battery drain by unticking "Use packet data" than I do using an APN toggle app.
Could someone explain the differences between the two, and what the APN apps leave switched on that other option does not?
Also, does anyone know of an app that unticks the "Use packet data" option?
Many thanks,
Andy

Quick update: The Extended Power Menu option "Data network mode" does toggle the "Use packet data" option.
So could this be a driver that is being disabled in the Kernel itself, rather than a service (or driver) in the OS?

Possibly a useful answer is here.

Great stuff, thanks for clearing that up for me

Shortcut to Turn 'Data-Roaming' On / Off ?

Is there a shortcut or widget to simply turn off/on the data roaming option?
It would be so much easier than going through home/ settings/wireless & network/ mobile networks
thank you
I use widgetsoid 2x.There is a option to add shortcut for system activities.
Also you can download a handy little app called 'Anycut' from the market which lets you create a shortcut to more or less any function. I use it for turning ON/OFF background data.

Thank you
use the 2g 3g toggle from CurveFish. its very simple and neat app.
when you open the widget, u will be taken to mobile network settings page, when you can turn on/off the data roaming.

[Q] lollipop quick settings junk

Apparently interacting with certain settings adds them to the Quick Settings screen.
Which can be okay: I went into the "tethering & portable hotspot" setting and turned on hotspot to see if it worked. (Worked!) Then I noticed a new hotspot toggle on my quick settings. Fine. Maybe useful.
BUT... then I selected and turned on "color inversion" from the accessibility settings section. Woah. Trippy. But probably won't ever need to do that again. Except when I swipe down from the top to bring up the quick settings, I now have a "color inversion" quick setting toggle taking up valuable space and cluttering up the page.
Any thoughts on this -- specifically how to get rid of the unwanted toggle?
Just saw this -- https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6111329?hl=en"]https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6111329?hl=en -- hoping that means it will eventually remove itself from quick settings.

Mobile Hotspot turning itself off after 26A update

I recently upgraded my G2 from 4.2 to 4.4 (26A) and ran the hotspot provision fix and it works great....when its on. It seems like within a few minutes of being on my hotspot turns itself off. I'll wake my phone and the toggle will be off. I checked the settings and don't think its anything in there (like battery saver). Also don't have any battery conservation apps. It worked perfect on the old firmware. I also tried some 3rd party hotspot apps (Open Garden for one) and none have worked properly. Any suggestions for fixing the native app or a 3rd party?
Check to see if you have "Advanced" settings (under the three vertical dot icon) in the Mobile Hotspot app. On my ROM, I have a setting called "Power Management" under "Advanced" which was set to turn the hotspot off after 5 minutes of inactivity by default. After setting this to never, I stopped having issues similar to what you described.

This was it! So obvious, I swear I looked before. On the 'configure' settings screen I had to hit the menu button to bring up the advanced menu you specified which had the Power Management setting. Many thanks!

Thanks guys! This helped me out a lot! The Advanced menu is kinda hidden. I was looking for one and couldn't find it prior. I feel dumb now. ha ha

Force 5GHz wifi? (9.7)

Hey everyone - just want to check if people have noticed this and/or have a workaround for it.
I'd like to set my device to connect only to 5GHz networks. On other devices, I'd do this by Settings -> Wifi -> (menu) -> Advanced and toggle the Wifi Frequency option there. As far as I can see, the Advanced option isn't available on the Wifi menu screen.
1) Is the advanced settings screen missing for everyone else?
2) Is there another way to access this screen?
3) Is there another way to toggle the relevant setting?
Thanks for your help.

Quick Settings "Mobile Data" AND "4g"

XZ1c Pie has two separate quick settings tiles: mobile data and 4g. I've noticed a few imperfections in Sony's overlay, so wanted to ask rather than assume: what exactly changes when none/one/the other/both are switched on?
