Adobe AIR/Flex HERO development for Android. Share your experience and try my app! - G Tablet Themes and Apps

I'm developing for Android platform utilizing Adobe newest Flex HERO which supports mobile device. The whole process is ok, but what I found that first of all it slow, that may be because no official release or AIR and Flash for GTablet. But also it is quite buggy. During debug application keeps crashing very often in various places, so I assume this is not my bugs. Debugging on device getting to be very annoying, can launch app 5 times before it actually starts properly and wont crash at very beginning.
Can anyone sharable own experience of AIR developed under GTablet?
I'm using latest Vegan firmware latest available AIR and Flash player.
Edit: I've attached APK with app, please try it and tell me how it works. Thank you!

I made a couple of simple apps with the first BURRITO release of the platform. All in all, no major problems like you described. The apps are slow, but not excessively so given that it has to load the AIR runtime first.
At the time I wrote the apps, I was on TnTLite 1.x and 2.x. Havent tried with 4.2.x.
I hope you get it sorted out; to me, the Flex platform is WAY faster to work with than the standard Android/Eclipse or MotoDev Studio.

My ReelPortal video conference app runs on top of AIR 2.5.1, but I actually developed it using Haxe (FlashDevelop IDE), instead of the Adobe tools. The major reason for doing that was speed, as from what I read, Haxe compiles to faster and tighter AS3 bytecode.
This was my first Flash app, so I had to learn both Haxe and AS3, but I think it's worth it, being able to run fast & efficient.

Nice thing about AIR/Flash is the same exact code runs on many platforms. My web client is at www.reelportal.com.

I'm just getting a black screen after loading AIR and Reelportal after turning on the camera.

That sounds familiar. Is it this problem:
MoonPops: I kept getting the black screen while starting up ReelPortal in the TNT dashboard home, but it works fine in the Android Home Classic screen interface.
Also, there are several versions of AIR floating around, and some don't work at all. I suggest get it from Android Market if you can. If not, then from the Adobe SDK.

It's been out for a while and it's not all that great. It's a little slow and the navigation controls kinda suck.

They released the first non-beta version today. It had a couple of glitches but I think they've got them taken care of with an update that should be out any time.
I actually prefer it over the other browsers I've tried on my Fuze. I haven't had any problem with speed or navigation. Also, since it's got the same base as the iPhone's Safari, you get the iPhone version of a lot of sites, which is usually superior to the regular version or mobile version.
I think browsers are one of those things that everyone has their own preference on but if you're unhappy with Opera, Skyfire or IE, it's definitely worth trying out.

According to their website, there are a lot of feature improvements, including flash support:
It has been one year since our first public preview was released, and today we made Iris Browser 1.1.0 available for download! There are many surprises waiting inside, including support for the Flash Lite ActiveX control, big performance gains, reduced memory usage, preliminary RSS and SVG support, the highest Acid3 score of any shipping mobile browser, and HTC accelerometer support. Download a copy now, and we’ll update you with more of the new features and plans in the near future!
I've personally been using the prior version and really enjoyed it. If this new version provides the features promised, it will likely be awesome.

Did you install version 1.1.1 or 1.1.0? 1.1.1 is supposed to fix the lock-up problem. They were pretty responsive when I emailed them so if you're having problems, let them know.

When I installed 1.1.0 yesterday it asked me if I wanted to install the update 1.1.1 and so for its a decent browser have to play with it more..
so far this has been awesome. i'll take the crappy interface, because it renders wonderfully. i love the little bulge thing when you click links.
Downloading and installing now. Will try all day tomorrow. Will be great to have a nice browser to use instead of PIE or Opera. Those two have given people a lot of proxy problems and flash content pages issues.
EDIT: First try and it just froze my FUZE.
I just started hating it with all my heart
I just can't use it. Every time I run it, it takes about a minute and it resets my phone. The controls are horrible. I can't believe you have to go through a couple of menus to actually enter an address. Also, I went to Youtube and flash content didn't work. And then guess, phone restarted.
Some of you guys seem happy with it, and some very unhappy like me, could you confirm the version you are using. I downloaded 1.1.1, wondering if we are all running the same at this point or if some of you still on 1.1.0. The one i'm using is supposed to fix the lock problem like mentioned before, but NOT.
This browser has extremely bad issues with memory usage... I will be running it (by itself, nothing else) for ~5 minutes, go to a few web sites, and it will invariably say "Out of memory" and exit automatically. I do like how things are rendered, however the zoom functionality is garbage compared to opera, and even clicking on a link takes longer than opera (although the animation/confirmation that you've actually clicked a link is nice).
all in all, i think it has a way to go, as the memory issue is something that makes it completely unusable as a daily browser (unless loading 1 website and quickly exiting is your cup of tea, heh).
i have the latest official adobe flash cab installed and i can't get flash to work.. anyone have luck with this?
Nice browser, I installed 1.1.1 last night, it really works nice, overall very smooth, the UI can take some changes, but overall performance was very solid.
I installed this browser, and it looked like it was about halfway through loading a page and would lock up.. had to soft reset. several times. I uninstalled it pretty quickly.
pat
Installed/uninstalled it twice last night--uninstalled permanently this morning. It would work for one webpage then lock up the phone. I checked and was using the most 1.1.1 - I agree the interface is not good, having the URL entry be clicks away from the start page was not wise in a broswer app. This app is not ready for broad usage. Although it did lock up on different pages it seemed to particularly find the New York Times page problematic.
Everyone do themselves a favor and change the cache directory to the storage card.
On NATF 4.3, it works perfectly. Nice use of webkit on winmo!!
FYI... version 1.1.2 is now out. They seem to be incorporating fixes pretty rapidly so if you've had problems with it, I suggest testing the latest version to see if their resolved.

Need video chat / conference testers

I recently published my ReelPortal video chat/conference software for Android 2.2 (using Adobe AIR 2.5) at the AppsLib market:
http://appslib.com/applications/app.html?ida=31520
I don't have a G Tablet, but would like to compile a list of devices that the app works on. So I'm looking for testers out there.
Please provide feedback if you try it. Thanks.
For more info on testing, please visit www.ReelPortal.com.
I just added another version reelportalX.apk (version 1.0.1). This version is working fine now. I suggest using it instead of the older one.
You must get Adobe AIR 2.5.1 from Android Market, or you can download the Adobe AIR SDK (http://www.adobe.com/products/air/sdk/), and get it in subdirectory runtimes\air\android\emulator, or runtimes\air\android\device. I found that Adobe doesn't allow posting the AIR apk on a website. Note: don't use the AIR link in post #6.
If you want to test chat with other folks around the world, please join the "xda" room (all lower case). Capacity is limited .

If I'm understanding how this works (when it works), these chats go through your chat server, and the way that we would do one-to-one video chats would basically to "join" a chat on your chat server?

You are correct on the server. It routes the data from the clients to each other. However, the clients can also do peer-2-peer with each other (this is the default mode). When first started, the clients all connect to my server to sign on. The server checks for name conflict and room availability, and authorizes the session. If you are in a room, the server connects you to all the clients in the room automatically. Of course, you can call individual person if you know their name(nick). You can also disconnect from any client you want.
In p2p mode, all video/audio traffic goes directly from client to client(s). The server doesn't have to process it. If you select client/server mode, then the server receives your stream and distribute it to all subscribing clients. This lessen your uplink bandwidth if you have multiple subscribers.
The next version will allow you to specify your own server. And yes, you can run your own server on linux, windows, or macOS. And perhaps other platforms too, if you are inclined to do so. An older server version is currently available from my download page, but I will release the newer version in conjunction with the next client.

To test, you can actually call yourself . Once connected, press button 7 (P2P), and select "Send to Server" mode. Then, press one of the "blue head" on the right, then press the ">" button on the dialog. A list will appear, and your nickname is the always the first one on the list. Click it, and you should see your own stream feeding back to you. Basically:
Your video ----> Server -----> Your device
Or if you have a computer, just run the web client on your computer, join the same room on both devices, or call the other's nick to establish connection. Hope that helps.

If it's a blank white screen, then perhaps it's not finding the server. Is your internet connection available or slow? Ideally, I should have some status indicator to be a bit more user friendly.
I also tried the adobe air file posted here, but reelportal apk only opens to a blank screen still. What are we doing wrong?

Thanks. Apparently, the front camera can't be access at this time . I googled this:
"AIR does not currently support the front camera.
In fact, the Android OS does not natively support the front camera. The device manufacturer provides a separate Java library that makes the camera available to Java apps."
I wonder if Android 2.3 supports multiple cams.
Also, is the front camera access problem the same for all tablet devices? Or is it device dependent?
To answer my own question: android 2.3 supports multiple cameras.

Adding G-Tablet to devices on the new Market site.

OK, I'm frustrated.
I have been trying to add my gtab to my devices on the new Market site, and have so far been unable to do so. Actually, that is not exactly true. I can get it to show up partially.
I have a Droid phone, and I see the phone when I go to my Market Account, Settings, My Devices. I enter the new nickname for my tablet.. [tablet, gtablet, Viewsonic G-Tablet, Malata ... all tried separately], I check the "show in menus" option. Press the Update button on the right. And nothing happens. The Maker, Model, Carrier columns for the tablet are empty, with only a hyphen. I cannot enter information directly into these columns, and whenever I try to download something, only the phone shows up. When I click on the little black triangle to expand the devices, I DO see the GTablet there. But it is grayed out with a question mark beside it. It says it is not compatible with this device. Every single app is not compatible with my tablet?
What am I missing?

Maybe it is just the simple fact that this tablet is not supposed to be on the market at all. So calling Google to ask why your tablet with the hacked market doesn't work probably won't get you very far.
What is the big deal with this web market anyway? I have no problem using the market app on the tablet.

+1 I just use the market on the tablet.... My device(for now) is showing in web market.
My G-Tab running Vegan 5.1 is working in the new market with no changes or modifications except editing the nickname. I installed an app to it via the new market already. Since I have a Droid also, I kinda like the ability to install on either or both devices. YMMV, apparently...
Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1
My tablet showed up under the web-based market as: "Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1 ". I added a nickname and downloaded some applications. Since I wasn't connected to the internet at the time it was held in abeyance. Once I got a wifi connection, boom down they came. So I can now peruse the market at work or as I monitor these forums, find an application, purchase it (or not) while I am still thinking about it and have it update the tablet the next time it connects. Not bad functionality for someone like me whose work environment is wifi restricted.
I still have one issue I would like to see Google fix. I purchased a application under one gmail account but after reflashing from tnt-lite to Vegan Tab I put my other account on the device first. Now I can't update that application without some tricky effort. Not sure I want to go through that effort or pay the $5 again
While that was me being stupid, I proposed to Google that I could envision the case where I might want to purchase an application with my work credit card and put that on their tablet and also purchase an application with my personal credit card. Their current schema doesn't allow for that. I can see where with telephones it might be a little more personal but tablets may start becoming shared devices say within a family.
What they seem to have for that situation is the ability to use more than one CC with the account. In that case you could use your work CC for some and personal for others.
Not a help for your situation, but it does address the situation you proposed.

I'm getting the same showing up in my market access, but where we differ, is I have yet to have an application actually download to my tablet. I've gone through 5-6 different apps that did show the G-Tablet as a compatible device, and these were not installed on my tablet before going to the web market...
The big difference now is I am seeing lots more apps using the legacy Market app on the tablet.
I figured the first week or so would be pounding the web market, and things seem to be settling down, if just a small bit.

I think that they are not trying to give us a hard time as much as they are just trying to have some sort of way to keep things manageable. I mean, they set certain guidelines that devices need to follow to get market access so hopefully most of the apps will work. GPS, and cell type data connection are a couple requirements. Why? I don't know. Guess they had to start somewhere.
I think it is also done so developers can build apps that hopefully work for the types of devices that do qualify. Imagine how hard it would be to make apps that worked on every variation of Android out there. How often do we have issues with apps that don't work on one rom, but work on a different rom.
Maybe it was just to try and keep the market from being like the wild wild west...
Apple has it pretty easy. There are only a couple of hardware platforms they need to worry about. How about Android? There are probably a 1000 different hardware variants out there.
I really won't be surprised if they come up with a way to keep all non qualified devices off the market. Not that big of a deal really if they do though.
So far my tablet is showing on the new market and allows me to download apps to it. I'm running vegan tab 5.1 if that helps anyone...

You are probably right, i tend to lean towards everything being based on how these companies can make the most money. Like if what i said is true, maybe then google gets a bigger kick back from the carriers, or phone manufacterers. Its ATT 's fault really, lmao, since everything they do is based on getting more money from me as a subscriber. it seems loke they try to make evry feature, an extra charge, without lowering the standard monthly fees. (i know i am most likely wrong, it just seems this way to me). I am not askin for free stuff, it just seems like they keep the services i want out of my pockets' reach.

Running great!!
I compared several pages and it the stock browser still feels like it scrolls smoother and loads considerably faster.
This IS a beta though so improvements in this regard are inevitable.
The fact that there is no Flash support hurts it just a bit too. Once Flash is completely eradicated from the web(I can't wait for that to happen, such a completely inefficient, performance hogging format) it'll be a non-issue though.
going to try this out now. thanks for heads up

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to change user-agent to desktop.
chrome://flags/ doesn't work. Some of the other chrome:// commands do, none of them have the option to change user-agent.
Does not load or have option to load pages in desktop mode. What is the point in a browser for tablets that loads pages as if they where on a phone.

In fairness, most web developers are taking a shortcut and assuming anything with "android" in the user-agent string is mobile instead of asking the browser for screen dimensions. This is bad but common practice.
The way which was finally added in the ICS browser to work around this is to change the user-agent string platform info to X11 instead of Android.
When you "request desktop site" this is what happens.
Site thinks is mobile: (Linux; U; Android 4.0.3; en-us; Build/ITL41F)
Site thinks is desktop: (X11; Linux x86_64)
This is an inelegant hack. (Though I am surprised it's missing from Chrome for Android)
Ideally, web developers will clue into the existence of tablets and properly handle things.

When people still design sites/apps for IE6 I wouldn't hold my breath.
Agreed with others here. Stock feels faster and smoother.
IMO its a terrible beta. No user string, no flash, bookmarks are terrible, colour theme doesn't fit with ICS..
Also, why does it exist? If it's only for ICS and above, why didn't they replace stock browser with it? I thought stock android browser was web kit and chrome based anyway.

I like it because my chrome bookmarks now sync, the feature never worked in Honeycomb or with the new ICS browser and I had to use the chromemarks app as a work around.
Its quite fast to use but it still needs a lot of work, flash, themes and extensions would be nice lolz

I think its not bad for a beta been using it on my phone for a few days now... Remember beta here.. We cant expect everything from your desktop onto your mobile device right now as with google they are going to add features as time comes... Personally i would like to see extentions work but most people would be like that

When i first downloaded chrome i used it a little then went back to ics + because i thought chrome was akward and hard to close tabs. I missed quick controls right off the bat because they are pretty ingenious and intuitive. Well since then i have only used chrome. I only use ics+ when i need to view flash. Chrome is fast, although it takes some effort to close tabs and open new ones. I can't wait for an update and all the things that are obvious (extensions, flash, quick controls). I love how android is growing up. I feel like a proud father watching it go from a small phone ui to now on the brink of blossoming out to all areas of life. By that i mean throughout our homes i.e. Google home integration. I don't think Google has any plans to support flash though with this browser. The HTML YouTube in this browser is fast an non buggy. I'm sure Google wants to keep their browser flash free so they can monopolize web m.
I think I have to agree with you, I've gone back to the ICS browser because it's better designed for touch screen devices. Chrome beta is quite fiddly to use with your fingers! lolz

4.4 [CM11 & CyanFox] No Picture upload possible with any Browser

Hi guys,
anyone got an idea why it itsn't possible AT ALL with Android 4.4 to post a picture on Facebook or other sites that allow uploading content?
The maximum reaction i get out of it is "failure opening file",it just doesn't work with any browser (tried Dolphin,Chrome,Firefox,Stock)
This happens on every 4.4 based ROM somehow, can't thank you enough for any input about this matter
edit: 85 views and not a single "yeah,i face the same problem" or "no problem on my side at all",whats up with that
edit2: it tested every 4.4 ROM now,not only CM11&CyanFox.Nowhere is the upload working trough Browser

Google made changes in KitKat replacing webkit with chromium webview and broke file upload, text reflow, etc. Basically web browsing is awful in KitKat, Google is aware but won't revert the changes. The only workaround at present is to use Opera Beta, or Firefox nightlies, there are other browsers with file upload but I would not recommend them at all if you don't want spyware. CM just implemented some changes on last night's nightly to fix file upload, but it's done nothing for me so far, still broken. At least the CM team is aware and willing to fix things.

Thank you for passing that info, this problem was/is driving me nuts and not reading anything about it other than my ramblings was the icing on the cake.
Maybe they can make it work again on CM

I'd blame developers just as much as Google though. I understand it makes sense for them to use a web engine that Android provides for free and save time and money, but this is what happens when Google breaks something, suddenly 90% of browsers are broken. Firefox uses its own gecko engine and thus is unaffected, Opera shows a bit of spirit and patches chromium to fix these things, on the other hand. And then most people use apps instead of a browser to do things, so if some of us protest, it's not relevant.
Anyway, know that there are lots of complaints over at AOSP, but Google's reply is that these changes are intended and won't be reverted, so that's that.
Edit : "From what I understand the following is what is broken in KitKat webview :"
• text wrap no longer works
• cannot upload files
• cannot save passwords
• cannot force enable zoom
• no inverted rendering
• cannot play Flash videos (broken in 4.3 too)
Woa,the rabbithole goes deeper & deeper.I thought this was a weird bug that just happens with custom ROMS of not officially supported devices but reading that it comes from Google (and they saying "deal with it") pushes this to a whole new level.

KitKat is such a kick in the ... for anyone developing on Android or just using it. Here's another jewel.
It looks like they're trying to restrict more and more things. The very reason many of us choose android over ios....

This whole KitKat issue transforms to a scandal of some sort.If Google doesn`t change its current course,we will be on full lockdown like iOS in 2 or 3 revisions (Android 6 for example). This roadmap doesn`t make me happy at all
