[Q] Rooted! What now? - HD7 General

Hi,
I just "rooted" my T-mobile USA HD7, everything went smooth and dandy. I felt great with my phone joining the league of jailbroken iPhones and rooted Androids. But now, I'm lost now, what can I accomplish with a "rooted" WP7.
Also on a side note, what do you call an WP7 with a new ROM. iPhone was Jailbreak, because it made us free of restraints. Andriod is rooted, becuase the it was Linux based and you had to alter the root of the OS. So what is it

I think according to Microsoft the term is jailbreak... which is exactly why we can't use it.

Can you direct me to the thread you used to root your HD7? Well, in the case of the HD7, I guess it's called jailbreaking
I will be getting mine tomorrow and I would like to have it jailbroke so I can uninstall some of the applications it came with that I don't need (I can do that right??)
Thanks
PS. Jailbreaking is completely different the 'unlocking' correct? Isn't unlocking strictly for sim card purposes? *noob*

Well I unbranded it, and put in a new ROM, I dont know if thats equivalent to rooting/jailbreaking.
Also if you go to your application list and tap & hold the application, then there should be a uninstall option

Finally upgrading to Windows Phone 7, need suggestions

Ok so Im sure this will be moved but I wanted my fellow TP 2 owners advice on what would be a good upgrade for moving to an at&t windows phone 7.
I have done some research and believe that the LG Quantum is more to my liking than the HTC Surround or Samsung focus for various reasons starting with the keyboard. I have also found that it offers tethering as well as voice to text which seems to be a cool feature. I have actually held the phone in my hands yesterday and compared to the other wp 7 at&t phones. It will no doubt be a bit different than what Im used to but nevertheless I do like the idea of having the latest and greatest hw and sw.
I am curious if these phones will support Tomtom as I use it all the time. I know that it will have to be jailbroken to load future custom roms but I think I can be patient.
I guess I am just wondering if Im missing something so if you all have any insight I would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks.

If this post is moved, it would be because this has absolutely nothing to do with ROM development.
LG phones have been pretty underwhelming in the past. But I haven't seen the Quantum in person, myself. WP7 has already been jail broken, apparently. But the mod community has not traditionally been all that excited about making custom ROMs for LG devices, if I'm not mistaken. Although the scope of this site has been expanding quite a bit recently.

TomTom will not work on WP7 nor will any other progam for windows mobile. WP7 is totally different and for now has a limited amount of programs and it will probably be awhile before we see third apps like we do for WM6.5. I think they are tryin to make it a closed platform like IPHONE and Android where most the apps will be endorsed by and distributed by Microsoft. I am not sure if there is a version of TomTom yet for WP7 but the one u have now will not run on WP7.

Android is fully capable of sideloading applications from sources other than the Android Market, including user made apps, beta software, etc. AT&T is the only carrier that has locked down the ability to sideload on their Android phones. Plus, Google is pretty open to what software they will allow on the Market, unlike Apple.

i never said u couldn't get third party apps i said that android and iphone want all apps to be endorsed and distributed by them. meaning if someone makes an app they want that app to be cleared for sale or download by them on their market. apple and google only make money off of paid apps if they distribute them and the maker of the app will make more money if their app is distibuted by apple or google cause the apps will all be in one place and easier to find which means they will have a better chance of selling. Microsoft wants to do the same thing by putting the majority of the WP7 apps in one place. the reason they even want free apps is cause the longer u look for apps on their stores the greater chance is you will click on an advertisment which pays them a few cents each time someone click on it. thats how all these companies make money. youtube is the worst but maybe the smartest cause they even put advertisments in their clips. they'll do anything to make a few cents but a cut of the money goes to the person who owns the video too. that is enough to make people wanna put their product on these sites and let them distribute it, money.

Putting Android and iPhone in the same category as "closed" is an injustice to Android, and not accurate. Yes, Google would "like" for apps to be endorsed by them, and to make money off of them, but they aren't forcing it like Apple is. There is plenty of 3rd party software available, and incredibly simple to install on Android. iPhone has to be jailbroken/hacked in order to do so. And Apple even tried to make it illegal to jailbreak the iPhone, to prevent loading of apps from sources other then their app store.
There are plenty of Android app stores like Handango and Handmark, which Google has completely allowed separate from their own market. Major developers like Gameloft have started their own Android app stores, instead of using the Android Market, and now its rumored that Amazon will also have their own Android app store. To say that Google is limiting the distribution of Android apps in any way is simply not correct.
HTC 7 Mozart
Hi
I have just upgraded from the TP2 to the HTC 7 Mozart. I am happy with the phone. It seems to work very well. As stated WM 6.5 software isn't transferrable and there are very few options for full navigation software at the moment.
I found the software keyboard very easy to use in landscape and certainly much better than anything I had on WM 6.5. I think that WP7, as an OS, has a very good way of recognising the difference between different type of gestures and it seems to "know" when you've made a mistake typing and corrects almost all mistakes automatically.
I still use my TP2 for work, so I will just leave it in the car for Sat Nav purposes.
Cheers

Android for HD7

So I don't know why WP7 people feel the need to bash the ones who want android for this device. I'm an HD2 owner, have had android on it for basically the entire time I have owned it...and it's been awesome, because lets face it, Windows Mobile 6.5 was garbage. I recently dropped it and cracked the screen pretty severely, checked into getting it replaced by my $8/month phone insurance (which I have since cancelled), and they (not shockingly) advised me that they can no longer replace it with another HD2, but with a HD7 instead.
So I looked here first, wondering how easily I could put android on it and was shocked by the lack of android development, and the numerous attitudes towards it. Obviously it would be better/easier to get another "4.3" inch HTC phone that runs andro-crap", but I won't be able to do that for a couple of months and was looking at a quick fix. I'm just surprised that it hasn't been done, since it's been done on almost EVERY OTHER PHONE. I just don't get it. So I'm going to buy a digitizer and just replace the screen on my HD2. Just thought I would share my experience. Oh, and yes, I have played around with WP7, and while much better than 6.5 it's just not for me.
Let the bashing commence...
No bashing here, well written post, honest and truthful. Nothing wrong with that.

Throwing android on the HD2 was always going to be an improvement... I had an HD2 and threw WP7 on it, which is why I now have an HD7... But if you liked android and the HD2, why not get the Desire HD?
Gotta love the versatility of all these HTC devices though...
I think its human nature to want something different or odd... I'm sure if it were easy to get android or WP7 on an iphone, heaps would do it just to be different...

I agree with you completely. I'm in the exact same situation as I had a dual boot android/wp7 hd2 and the digitizer broke. Mostly I used android because of the apps, but I like wp7 better for it's sleek design.
I'm baffled how 75% of people on the hd7 threads can say 'JUST GO BUY A ANDROID PHONE" and "why would you want to dual boot an hd7?". I could buy an android phone but, stupid tmobile replaced my hd2 with an hd7 for free. it's a great phone, there are few which are better currently.
In the hd2 threads, most people wanted to push the limits and explore every possible option; that seems to be missing in large part from the hd7 threads. "just go buy an android phone" will never be the answer.
shame on you who say this...
The only reason to bash I can see, is the lack of people reading and realizing that there is a dedicated Android thread just a couple lines above, where stuff like this should have been posted. Haha...
Otherwise, there is just very little interest in getting Android on this device, which means that it makes more sense to go buy an Android phone, because you're just going to be waiting a while for an Android solution, on a device/platform that does not need it as much as something like the HD2/WinMo did. Hence why there is little to no progress on getting Android on this device.

if this is true then why dont you buy a mozart and try this rom...
The overall WP7 posse hardly resembles the WM crowd.
I've been a die hard Windows fan ever since my AT&T 8525-even before that with a couple PPC PDA's. When I lost that phone I replaced it with a Samsung Epix. Despite my horrible experience software fiascoes and the Epix, I still returned to Window's Mobile when I got my Tilt2. It was while I was dealing with my Epix that I discovered a cooked rom on a site that I had not previously heard of, XDA Developers. I now use this site a my primary guide to purchase new phones...if I can't hack it and install custom roms I have no interest in it.
Through my time with my Tilt2 I made some observations about the Windows Mobile community. Many of them were like me and had over time found many CABs that work well for them and were content with a platform that the were familiar with. Many of them were veteran programmers well versed in C++ and could really do some magic. Others just signed a two year contract with the cheapest old smart phones their provider was clearing out. What ever the reason we had our devices in a world where IOS and Android were rapidly taking over. Every one worked together and amazing things were accomplished. In the Touch Pro 2 forums, Android and Ubuntu was running, and a lot of you are familiar with everything that was done with the HD2. These things happened because WM fans by nature enjoyed doing them.
As Windows Mobile phones started to die off through breakage and device upgrades, a lot of my companions switch gears to the Iphone after it made great strides since the first gen EDGE only model, in OS capability, hardware performace, and a now enormous hacking community. Others who wanted remain anti Apple and wanted more freedom out of the box went with Android.
It finally came to my time in the begining of this year to upgrade. I knew very little about Windows Phone 7 devices except that I did not know a single person who owned one and that it was not backwards compatible with any of my software. Being completely anti Apple I began shopping around fully intending to buy an Android device. I started playing with floor models and I noticed one thing about every Android device. No matter how fast the hardware was, when I would touch and slide to unlock, there was always a noticeable lag. I found that to be a bad sign. Then when navigating the phones, they all lack the responsiveness of my wifes Iphone 4. So I tried the Windows Phone devices and they were all incredibly responsive. In all the menus and and web browser I slide my finger rapidly trying to out run the display and I swear I could not find any where that lagged. I was intrigued and hooked. After checking XDA and of all the WP7 phones available to me with AT&T, the HD7s was the only one with custom roms.
I believe this to be the only reason any of us here. Window Phone 7's foundation is simply flawless. Now that's not to say over all the OS is any where near perfect. It is severely lacking in software, customization, and even basic preferences. It is in these ways I've described WP7 as ever more "iPhone" than the iPhone itself. Now all this mean's is the biggest reason any body has a WP7 device is because the actually like it. So it's not far from reason there is little interest in changing operating systems. We've reached a point were all smart phones have virtually equal internal hardware so phone are chosen primarily based on software. The people who find themselves stuck with an HD7 against their liking are a very small fraction of an already small community. Those coming from an HD2 or a Rodium know that to get Anrdroid onto these devices took countless man hours from many very determined and very talented people working together. They just aren't with us here in the HD7 community. We are lucky to have the very talented developers that are here producing custom Windows ROMs.
Own android nd wm7/hd7
I agree with all of you but, with that said this is my take on it. I am using Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan by the way just so everyone knows. I have both a htc hd7 with a 32gb sd in it- its running mango. I also have three android phones. HTC wildfire s in white, Samsung Vibrant, Htc mytouch 4g(my only 4g phone). Starting from the top. All my android phones have custom roms installed and are rooted. I love android as much as the next guy cause when I use those phones I love the apps and love that I have all of them nearly maxed out on there performance figures due to the roms and overclocking.
This being said all my android phones still can not keep up with my hd7 in everyday use when you talk about smoothness. Like the guy before me was saying as well how all the android phones he tested lagged when unlocking. That is still the same situation here with me after installing custom roms which did make the phones faster and after overclocking made then even faster. But even with my hd7 running a stock mango rom it still is the phone that I use most because of the smoothness and responsiveness that it has when using it for normal everyday smartphone activities like gps, internet browsing, watching videos, playing music, and texting and calling of course. This stock oem wm7.5 mango hd7 works better at all these things than any of my android phones.
This being said I would like to have android on the device as a dual boot that way I would get rid of my other android phones and just have this one phone for both. But, I would still use wm most of the time, which is the reason that I think ppl who own an hd7 or any other wm7 or 7.5 phone own them cause everything works great. and yes i agree with the other guy before me in saying that it does need more development in customizations and applications. but where it lacks here it makes up for in performance and ease of use. so in my opinion there is a plus and minus to both android phones and wm phones. the only question is which one will correct there downfalls first. apples will not be talked about with me cause i hate them but, as far as wm and droid go both need improvements.
Going with this thread this would be my reason for why i think no one has really developed an android system for this device yet cause unlike the android devices the hd7 does everything the way a smartphone should. I would dual boot but, i would never wipe wm7.5 off of it cause that would just be stupid and would be like downgrading. performance wise wm7 > android anyday until android fixes their laggy os.

A few basic questions regarding using SIM unlocked Focus S, please help.

Question 1: Seems like Focus S is never getting as much love as HTC Titan for some reason, why is that?
OK, I just got two extra WP phones I got back in 2012 SIM unlocked, sammy focus S and HTC Titan. I plan to give one to my parents in China to use, who are not tech savvy nor heavy cellular data user at all. I have a few questions based on what I skimmed through several WP forums (XDA etc) that I need you experienced users' help.
1. Which one is more idiot-proof for old users, focus S or Titan?
2. Once I SIM unlocked it, I assume they can just pop a local SIM to talk and txt, right? Anything else that needs to be manually set up?
3. I noticed a few threads talking about tricks of setting APN with Straight Talk. How about TMobile? And I assume that's only used for data usage right? If my parents just use it to talk and txt plus WIFI, it should be fine just leave the settings unchanged?
4. Also a lot of threads were debating whether to upgrade to WP7.8 or not and how to do it. Now it's 2014, is WP7.8 upgrade pushed automatically by MS already or I still need to follow the instruction and use 3rd party tools to do it?
5. Is there any custom ROMs for this phone at all? And what are the immediate updates/mods you guys suggest if I boot up the phone for the first time.
Thanks so much.
5.
The focus s was unfortunately an ATT exclusive , meaning one of the best designed windows phone 7 devices ever made was also only available to a tiny number of users, hence the lack of love!
As for setting it up,network unlock it, interop unlock, setup apn , update to 7.8 an your done

Dude,
With the exception of ONE device, the immortal HTC HD2, there has never been any (current) device that has had cross platform support, and lets be clear about the HD2, it was a WM device, that was opened up, and rather handily was also used as a test platform for WP. its android life started out as a hack that ran (initially) from within windows, later moved to its own ROM via MAGLDR. There was a lot of very cleaver people using a single device thus it had a lot of support to do these wonderful things.
OEMs shipping android then went nuts and made so many new devices it diluted the support available to specific phones and effectively killed off any further "HD2 Moments"
So no, the focus S doesn't have Android support. No one is working on it, no one tried to and to my knowledge no one will ever work on it, the same can probably be said about most phones.
Besides that, I cant remember which one because there was so many different versions it is but its essentially the same as the Samsung Galaxy 2(s?) so why not buy that if you want android on it?
and Finally
This has been asked So many times about so many devices, even googling it brings up an answer within the first few posts. Just take this as a wee helping hint, try search for your questions, this site has so many users over so many devices that statistically, its likely any question you may have has probably been answered somewhere by someone else

Exactly.. This question has been asked dozens of times on every single WP forum since WP 7.5 was around and a simple search wouldve helped you here .... It Cannot be done, itll never will be done. You can buy an BNIB Unlocked Android HTC One M8 now for about $300 / £300.
It was talked about a while ago by MS allowing Android apps on WP, but thankfully they ditched the idea.
Citation on them ditching the Android-apps-on-W10(M) thing, please? They definitely announced it (not just "talked about", although it did sound like it wasn't going to be ready by the RTM date) and I hadn't heard a retraction of that announcement.

Purchased Moto E5 unlocked and flashed with TWRP and crDroid Pie on eBay

As the title says, I purchased Moto E5 unlocked and flashed with TWRP/crDroid/Magisk on eBay. The seller has a great rating and sells a lot of different phones with custom Roms and claims to spend a lot of time customizing the Rom's settings and also with Magisk modules. I can't help but wonder what if this guy isn't honest, what if he's installed Mal/spy/stalker ware on my phone?
I've downloaded Avast, Malwarebytes, Incognito to run but could not find any rootkit detectors for Androids, just Linux, Mac, IOS, Windows. I know the phone is rooted but I understand rootkit's hide malicious Mal/spy/stalker wares.
I imagine the seller wouldn't risk his eBay ratings (99.6 since 2000) by installing malware on the phones and if he was, someone would have noticed already. Besides just redoing all this guys work, re-flashing TWRP/crDroid/Magisk, customizing settings etc... (which I can do but would rather not), can anyone recommend any apps for detecting rootkits, malware etc..., I'm not really going to feel safe on this phone without running a VPN or re-flashing.
Thanks

Why is he risking his feedback when obviously you can't tell if any undesired apps are installed. The bigger question is was this a second thought, after already buying what you thought was sooo cool?
Can't resell it now, what if whoever you sell it to discovers these apps or I meant scripts. Apps can easily be found, where scripts are baked in, and they blame you for spying. Can't give it away either, that's all the more reason for giving away a free phone. Looks like you're stuck with it! Have fun being an exhibitionist! Muuuuaahhhh
Thanks for the advice Taly's dad. Be well and be kind and good things will happen for you.
