With the recent influx of Droid devices generated by them being handed out to many individuals through Google's developer channels, I imagine I'm not the only one wondering whether or not it would be possible to get service for this device by anyone other than Verizon. I'm hoping that someone can explain to me what it might take to make this possible.
As I understand it, VZW uses both 1900 and 850 while Sprint uses only 1900 with roaming possible on 850. That means the device should be compatible between the two networks from a frequency standpoint. What I'm not sure about is whether any of the software instructions coded into the VZW/Sprint devices are important to the correct operation of the phone on the network, or if they are identical and it only matters which network accepts the device's ESN.
In short:
- Would any software modifications to the device be necessary for appropriate functionality on the Sprint network?
- If so, could those modifications be derived from existing Sprint Android platforms like the Hero/Moment?
I have been given a free Droid, but I have no plan on ever switching to Verizon. It will remain a development only device if I can't modify it to work with my existing Sprint account.

the only way to get this to work is via esn swapping !! and that is illegal!! so.... good luck google it!! sprint will not add esns to there network from other carriers !! verizon does is sometimes but sprint will not do it!! sorry are u willing to sell it?

Illegal, huh? Good 'ol US; the only country that feels the need to so tightly bind our devices to specific carriers. I vastly prefer the unlocked GSM phone model that Europe operates under. Le sigh.
Thanks for the info. I'm unlikely to sell, as I can find uses even for a device that doesn't have service. I just thought I could kill the proverbial two birds with one stone if I could make it work. C'est la vie.
You're forgetting the fact that there are at least TWO major nationwide GSM carriers in the US.
Japan has better game-shows than the US does, but I'm not going to say, "good ol' US" when complaining about it. But, I wouldn't even complain about it.

I'm not forgetting at all. The difference is that phones here, even for those two carriers, are sold locked rather than unlocked. Many consumers don't even know they have a choice, nor are they aware that their phones can be unlocked. The fact that the phones can be unlocked, and maybe could be used somewhere else in the world (depending on whether or not they support non-US bands), hardly excuses the fact that a tiny number of consumers would ever even realize that, or go through the hoops and hurdles necessary to unlock their phones.
This is a far cry from a market with many options for carriers where phones are sold unlocked and can be easily moved between any available carrier. The Wikipedia listing of mobile network operators in Europe (which I can't post) is quite illuminating when you realize that countries a tiny fraction of our size have a lot more than 2 choices that the phones they purchase, their property, can operate on. I would say cheering that at least we have two choices seems a little silly when the competition level here for carriers is so much weaker than elsewhere in the world.
Let's just say I'm more than a bit frustrated that what I've been gifted is, in the absence of one particular company's service, a brick. The phone belongs to me, yet whether or not I can use it as more than an alarm clock is dictated by only one company. It seems a little silly, and more than a tad bit frustrating. I would have much preferred an unlocked GSM phone; not only would I have two networks, albeit only one with 3G, to choose from, but my international options would have been wonderful.
Ok, so long story short.. there is no way to get the Droid A855 on gsm even if its unlocked? I know I just might be in the wrong forum but I have been searching all freaking day and honestly every site is starting to look the same to me 10:1 I'll prolly just sell the phone back off

No, because the A855 does not have a GSM radio in it. Without the capable hardware, what you want to do is impossible.

I'm not for sure, but it doesn't look real to me. Usally stuff like that has more pages and stuff like that.
I don't believe this will work as Sprint uses CDMA and Boost (although owned by Sprint) uses iDEN. iDEN is basically a SIM version of CDMA but doesn't work with either. Boost does offer something that lets you use certain Boost branded phones on Sprint's network however.
For the select handsets operating on Sprint's CDMA network, I would assume yes to 3G. The iDEN network, from what I'm reading, is a different network so I have no idea on that one.
It can be done, just not likely a legal way to do so.

What Sprint phones will work on Boost, and how do I get ____ on Boost (part 2)
1.5 Is it possible to use other phones on Boost CDMA?
I've been thinking about the Boost thing to I know the only thing that would stop you is if sprint has some sort of subsidy code on these phones. I've had two unlocked gsm phones and the only from tmobile to at&t. I had to get the subsidy from tmo to get it to work on at&t then had to hack the phone to get the mms and internet to work. There is a guy on here that has successfully flashed his phone to metropcs so it is definitly possible. Only problem is that you would have to constantly fix your apn (depending on how often you change roms)
First, as others have stated, the comment about boost being iDen is only is not correct. Boost has iDen and CDMA. When I looked into it the only phones you couldn't put on Boost appeared to be the Android phones. I know there are other ways to do it but not sure if it is ok here to talk about that.
I am considering trying to get my Hero on Virgin Mobile though, the new Beyond Talk unlimited Data/txt/messaging plans for $25+ is just crazy.

I wouldn't trust them as their information is incorrect. Boost Mobile is not 4G, nor is any of their phones capable of running on 4G.
Plus their price is just ridiculous.
We do the same thing and we are the originators of it. we started with BoostBerry3G.com, then SilverSpoonCells.com and now we are doing it for 30 different websites and 49 stores across US.

All Sprint Models with a Clean ESN/MEID are compatible except: HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, palm pre, palm pixi, and BlackBerry 8530 Curve 2
In very rare occurences some Samsung Instincts have showed up as Incompatible.

1st -- you wouldn't be flashing anything to switch networks, thats a given (its not a ROM)
2nd-- you bringing up boost having cdma and iden a year later is pointless... this is definitely known already
3rd-- the only android phone you could "buy" from boost is the one they sell

As my trusty ATT N1 soldiers on, I'm considering whether to jump to a new carrier in the near future so that I can stay current with upcoming Google Developer Phones. I would appreciate some feedback regarding the assumption that since the G1, Sapphire, and N1 were TMobile compliant, we can expect that the next Google Dev Phone might be exclusively flavored TMobile. Do you agree?

We can assume sense they had a close relationship with Danger and now Google that they will stick with the same bands for Developer Phones. Just like we can only assume Google will stick with HTC for official Developer Phone hardware.

well history is all we have to go on.
one of the main reasons why T-mobile 3G bands have been used on the dev phones so far is because its the most compatible worldwide (ie works with the most carriers in the world, you can use them in the US, Canada and in Europe)
considering this its pretty likely to continue to stay this way. ATT 3G band is no where near as widely used and CDMA phones must be carrier specific (well they don't have to be really hardware wise but the way they work vs GSM phones its extremely dependant on the provider allowing you to use a phone that is not theirs on their network, it can be done but its a real pain to get them to do it)

In this thread, I would like to gather as much information as possible about transferring Verizon Wireless Service onto a Sprint Branded HTC Hero CDMA (Aka Hero200 & APA6277) with android 2.1 (codename Eclair).
I have already successfully 'rooted' the device....Now I just need a ROM. I cannot find any evidence that a ROM/PRL has been developed for this phone to support Verizon service(Although I believe some people have successfully ported cricket/boost/metroPCS to the Hero200).
I learned that the HTC Hero200 is pretty similar to the HTC Droid Eris, which supports Verizon, but the Eris firmware cannot be installed on the Hero without significant problems. Maybe someone knows of a workaround?
Perhaps we can break down exactly what is required to develop such software and implement the necessary provisioning data into this phone to support Verizon?
Can anyone please help point me in the right direction? Thank you!

Ok I'm kinda familiar with this as I'm new to sprint from cricket. The rom isn't important. Before you get to deep in to this I would recommend you either go to the Verizon website or call the customer support line and try to register the min on their network. If not then what you have to do MAY be illegal and I'm not sure if I can explain how to do it here. I know I can say what you need to do though. You're gonna have to get a Verizon phone and flash it's serial number to your hero. Remember, this is ONLY if they won't register the phone on their network. Try that first and report back what happens.

If I risk bricking the phone, it's cool... I'm more interested in learning about it, and I want to see if I can successfully transfer carriers.
I actually acquired this Hero200 through a 'friend of a friend' which was passed along as a gift, but I think the original owner lost the phone. I'm guessing they may have notified Sprint the device was 'lost/stolen', thus rendering the ESN number useless on Sprints network (But I'm not exactly sure how this works).
So if the ESN for this phone is 'tainted' or I guess 'blacklisted' on Sprint's network, this means I have to either program a new ESN onto this phone, or use a different carrier, right?

Sorry the auto correct put min instead of esn. The only thing your phone needs is the prl for text and voice to work. Data is a little more detailed but easily done. Yes it is illegal and if the phone was reported stolen or missing the only places you're going to get it working is a lower tiered service provider like metro pcs or cricket unless you swap the esn. Again it is illegal and I can't tell you how to do it without violating forum rules.

I wouldnt play with the ESN...why dont you just try to flash an eris rom(it might not run everything)but...activate the phone and flash another rom...(Aosp 0.9.8 is my fav. thanks aosp)
anyway...i am not sure it will work but i think is worth a try than getting into some illegal stuff....

how would you get the PRL? I am running a stock sprint 2.1 rom. Heard some people got it to run under a eris rom. I don't think that matters what Rom your using. i'm soo close.. I keep getting "We're unable to authenticate your phone at this time..." DO i just strip the PRL off the old phone? Isn't there an A-KEY that has to be delt with.?? i've seen lots of people get text and talk (all I need) but how are they getting past the A-KEY???

I was actually looking to do just this, only the opposite. Buy a Verizon phone and activate it on Sprint's network. Altering ESNs is illegal, is it a different story if you rightfully own the ESNs that you are modifying? I had my EVO stolen so I'm stuck paying full price for another smartphone if I want one. I'd love to buy a phone, full retail price, from Verizon so that I legitimately own the device(and its ESN?), and swap its ESN with another Sprint phone which I legitimately own. I'm just unsure if this is allowed or still considered illegal. Can anyone provide insight?
I'm pretty sure this would require changing the ESN of the phone. If you own the phones and ESNs that are being altered/swapped and you aren't cheating the carrier out of any money(i.e. putting a Hero's ESN on an EVO so they don't charge you the $10 premium data charge because they think its a Hero, which would be theft of their services=ILLEGAL) is it still not allowed.
Changing the ESN is highly illegal, no matter if you own both devices. Look at it this way, the fact that you own 2 cars does not give you the right to exchange their VIN numbers. Identification numbers on products are not meant to be modified.
Please proceed carefully with the discussion of this thread. Continued talks about exchanging (cloning) ESN may end up getting this thread closed down.. Thanks.

Running southpaw rom on HERO with Verizon PRL, and Verizon Radio, updated MDN and MIN, and all data info. Only thing I have not done per some guides is call verizon Customer service to update the A-Key. I don't think this is necessary, I think i'm done with this project..

I have ran into a similar problem like this with authentication problem.
Do you already have service?
Was "donor" phone you used your primary phone that was already activated?
What I did is activate another version phone the reactivated my modified fascinate and got a new a-key.
Email me if you have problems after this I am planning on going down a similar route with a evo If you catch my drift.

Or better yet how do I get to the menus to program the phone manually. I can get into the menus for the phone I want to replace and change the information accordingly if I can get to the programming menu on the htc hero. Its a sprint phone going to verizon.

2. As per older posts any procedures you take flashing a device is HIGHLY illegal. You're better off just getting a Verizon phone.

Hey I bought an Alltel Hero for the sole purpose of hacking (I'm going to change its ESN/MEID) but we're not gonna talk about that purpose directly..
Just answer this for me.. If I do what I plan to do, do I need to flash a new radio or will the Alltel radio that it already has already "tell" it to look for Verizon towers?

Swerve, I don't have Verizon....
I want it to happen really bad but I know it probably won't. Verizon will never let Google have the software control they need because CDMA.
I really wish I didn't have unlimited data. Otherwise I'd pick a new carrier.

Naw..you mean JUST like they're doing on the Nexus 7 LTE tablet!?!
I would love to stay with Verizon. They are great at my job plus I get a work discount and I have unlimited data...With that said after the way they have handled recent big phones (like the HTC One) if they don't get the Nexus 5 (which they probably won't) I am out of here.

Well, a device without Verizon Navigator is not much of a device at all. They are just looking out for their customers and want to give them the best experience that they can.

I REALLY want it to come to verizon.. The only reason why I'm still with vzw is because its either them, Alltel, or Southern Linc. And as ****ty as it is, vzw is the best of those :/
My gnex is getting old and tired and I would relaly like to replace it with the N5. But time will tell. I'm not very optimistic though...

According to leaks....nexus 5 is already compatible with CDMA....at least from what ive read....the issue is that verizon wont let you activate/use it...again from what ive read

I think that it's compatible with CDMA, just not Verizon's CDMA. Something about it skips over the 800 band in CDMA. If I recall correctly anyways.

Yeah. The author probably saw cdma bands in the fcc filing and assumed that meant Verizon(not realizing that they were not Verizon bands) . I really doubt that this writer has some inside information about the phone coming to Verizon.

Screw Verizon and its users. Yes, Verizon has a great network, but NO it's not worth getting raped by them and having to use their locked down hacked phones and over priced plans.
Verizon and AT&T are the big brothers of the cell industry, their mentality of "You will take what we give you and like it." is killing it for consumers. Yeah T-Mobile and Sprint has worse networks, but the more people that move to them will show the giants they can't operate like that.
I would drop Verizon in a heartbeat if I could. Paying for a single line with 1gb of data and it's right at 100 bucks. And that's with my 17% discount through work! But, I can't drop Verizon... It's either them or alltel for my area...
