It should work just fine on 3G as well as on wifi for most ads.
After all, it's simply replacing your /etc/hosts file with one that references all advertising servers to 127.0.0.1 (localhost). The OS should reference this file for all outgoing connections, regardless of what network device it is using.

Could be your provider is forcing a proxy, although in general I'd think the hosts file would always "just work" as it'd resolve to 127. But a proxy in your APN is what I suspect is happening.
Anyway to get around this? Also could not vpn on 3g either.

Of course you can't get VPN unless you're on the expensive data plan, but that has zero to do with this thread.

I had the same problem as yours. Just delete the proxy on your APN settings. Dontput any proxy then afferent or adaeay will work.
Yes, the proxy in your APN sounds like the problem, I had to remove mine for my connection to work as intended.
tangentially offtopic:
Also, some applications (like angry birds) bypass adfree's blocking. Don't really know how.
For those, use droidwall to stop them from showing ads. sometimes if you revoke their internet access permissions using CM7's permission manager, the app will crash.
It's the only solution that i've found so far
Dumb question, but where in the settings is the proxy / apn located at?
I'm on Bell with Cyanogenmod. Removing the proxy in the APN settings does not fix the issue. On a normal Samsung ROM, all ads are blocked, but now on Cyanogenmod they don't work. I think Cyanogenmod is doing something funny, it doesn't recognize my network as Bell either, it just recognizes it as '302619'.
Does anyone know how to alter how the network and hosts file is used on cyanogenmod?

Same here for me on oxygeN1mod.

Wifi tethering and repeater problem. Help please

Hmm. My story is i'm using provider Indosat on my country. Use it in my office and it works fine. I can tether it easily to my laptop. Most of my colleague are using another provider Simpati, and recently my office bought a repeater to strengthen Simpati's signal. And now, i can still get signal for my indosat, but my internet is barely works at all. Any solution to overcome this?
My other solution is i change provider to Simpati, but somehow Simpati blocked the data plan. I can tether it using wifi but there'a no data flow rendering it useless. I can still use it on the phone though.
Is there a hack or anything to enable the data flow? Since my plan is already unlimited anyway.
Thanks before, any suggestion will do

[Q] Anyone got wi-fi tether working on Simple Mobile?

I have my g1 on simple mobile. And for the life of me i cant figure out how to get wi-fi tether to work. Ive used a few different apps all with same result the network id never gets broadcasted, i cant connect.
Anyone have their g1's on simple mobile with wi-fi tether working?
It works fine on t-mobile, although they throttle back the data speed after 30mb on the prepaid $1.49 'day pass'.
i know simple mobile uses tmobiles networks, but is it exactly the same? what app do you use to tether?

[Q] Wi-Fi hostspot with enryption (for non-tethering APN)

Did anyone get some hotspot app working that doesn't use AT&T tethering APNs? I don't have the hotspot/tethering feature from AT&T on my account, but I got an old version (2.0.7) of this:
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
working. It creates an AP, and I can connect my laptop to it and browse. My APN stays "wap.cingular" (cause I'm on a legacy data plan).
However that version of tether app doesn't seem to either find WPA supplicant or not able to configure it. Either way, my AP comes up unsecured even though the app thinks it is.
Anything better than this out there that is free?

I've searched and searched but there's nothing I could find. I think jmz had a thread somewhere around here to get WiFi tethering working but I don't know if it worked 100%. the application I use to the tether is via bluetooth but also available through usb using foxfi btw. If that works for you, easy tether might be better depending on what you want

Jmz'm method adds APNs into telephony.db and that's the way to tether through provider's (paid) service you have on your account. I can't connect to that APN unless I start paying for that service. To be exact, the network rejects my AT&T sim when I try to connect and I'm left with no data connection of any kind. My sim is only good for "wap.cingular" APN.
This thread is for non-APN tethering methods.
