[Q] Installing new apps or even restoring has become impossible. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am fairly new to all of this but feel I have a firm grasp of things. Having said that, I have lost the ability go install apps from any source. My backups are just files and the market is juat for window shopping. Please help me... Oh yeah, already flashed 2 different ROMs to try to start fresh with no luck.

Could you be more specific what isn't working now that was working before? How are you trying to install apps? from .apks on the phone or by sideloading? Can you load apps from the market? What did you use to create backups?
Best way to start fresh is to flash to stock, and start over. Whats ROMs have you been running?

what isn't working
First off I'm on ROM 3 and I flashed to stock first. Anyways it asks if I want to install an app I click ok and get the action bar bug it never finishes. I've tried from the market and from my SD card. My backups were made with Titanium Backup.
Thank you for your time.

What is ROM 3?
You didn't explain which way you are trying to install an app before the bug happens. All ways?
To be 1000% honest, you're starting to sound like a customer... I'm phone support for a major cable/internet company, and when I ask what's wrong, and it can't be articulated, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG.
Feel free to PM me for help or ask in this thread.
If your phone is not right, then flash to stock and start over. What is ROM 3?

[Rooting] In all honesty, is it really worth it? Im thinking about going back to stoc

**Edit: I was completely wrong.. I figured out everything, i know what i'm doing now lol.. thanks guys.
My first time rooting was a couple days ago when i had learned about the "1 Click Root" method...
I succeeded, got that latest ROM (to my knowledge) CM6 RC2 from the trusty (lol) ROM Manager.. which i enjoy a lot since im rooted and what not. I also themed my ROM a couple times to (what i think) are pretty cool themes..
But anyways, to make a boring story short (lol).. I absolutely hate (with a passion) wiping my data to my phone when i see or hear about this awesome new theme i want.. people say it is a must to wipe ur phones data to apply the "best" effect..
This gets REALLY old.. i had to do this like three times yesterday because i kept seeing new themes i wanted lol.. Re-entering passwords and re downloading all of your apps everytime you want a new ROM or want to apply a theme is too much work for how "great" rooting is.. Dont get me wrong, i love the new style of my phone, it looks amazing, but man! do i really have to keep wiping data to apply the things i want??
I now, noticed that all my contacts are not my phone. Only the contacts phones numbers on facebook that i had sync'd.. "My" contacts that i have in my phone are not there.. I imported them from my sim card and re-booted, but still not there.. Could this be because of my theme?
To what really made me mad was my camera, it keeps force closing.. Is this also because of the theme? I have the normal radio ending in 4.06.00.12_7.. I do not know if it didnt work before i applied the theme or when i rooted, i just realized last night it didnt work.. i do not want to re flash cm6 to see if the camera is working just because i do not want to "start" all over again.. with wiping and all that... if i have to, sadly, i will.
I had stock froyo frf91 before i rooted my phone.. in all honesty, should i just un root my phone and go back to the way it was? because if i have to keep wiping data, and starting over, im going to blow a fuse lol..
*** Sorry for my aggressive tone everybody, i just would like everything to be a smooth ride wth no wiping and i can apply themes as easy as 123 without losing data.. is there any ROM or theme that you could recommend?
please, someone help me... thanks xda community
I don't ever wipe when I upgrade to the next version of cyan, so I don't lose a single thing. People say to wipe if you have problems. But you shouldn't have problems which means you don't need to wipe. It runs perfectly fine for me this way with no issues at all, no force closes, etc.

Really? hmm.. ok thanks man.. but in rom manager when you downlaod something, it brings up an option saying backup and wipe.. do i have to click that or can i just cancel and just go ahead and reboot..?
The way I do it (maybe not the fastest) is to set up your rom exactly how you want it, nandroid, then install any mods that might eff up your installation. Once you've installed the mod and you're 100% sure mms/wifi/bt/gmail/etc are all working, you can nandroid again and use that as your base.
The only time you'd need to wipe is if you want to set up another rom so you could switch back and forth between different roms.
And by different roms I don't mean updates within roms, like CM6 nightlies or enom's updates, I mean completely different roms like CM6 as opposed to enom.

Ok thank you.. what about for themes and what not...? it says i have to wipe as well....
Your problem looks to be trying to navigate complicated stuff with lack of skills.
There is a good reason to root "old-fashioned" way, without 1-click stuff: if you read all you need to read and understand (various guides that teach you how to work with recovery etc) to root, then you won't get lost when rooted. Now you're trying to do stuff without even knowing, how things work, and let me guess - you didn't read any guide, you don't know how to work with recovery w/o ROM manager and don't know how to load a ROM, etc.
My suggestion is - go to Development section, open the stickies with guides and start reading. Do the same in General section, and don't skip the Wiki either.
Root brings you full control of the system, and it's excellent - knowing your way you can do tons of stuff, theming being the least interesting/important. But to control, you need to know and understand more than "1-click stuff".
Or you can just go back to stock, if you see no added value in a rooted phone.

What theme are you talking about, I don't recall seeing any themes requiring a wipe.
The only thing I can think of is a pre-themed rom. If you don't know the difference between a theme and a themed rom, you should follow Jack's advice and read up.
Your mistake is thinking that because there is an option to wipe in Rom Manager, then it must be necessary. No it isn't. The option is there for the people who want to wipe, but upgrading from one CM to another won't need it, themes won't need it, etc.
It is your job to know when it is needed or not. And you get that by reading and understanding how your phone works.
just wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache, the only time you must fully wipe is if you get boot loop when flashing a new rom/mod/etc.

You just uncheck the wipe one. Besides you can just use recovery and don't have to use ROM manager.

You certainly do not wipe to install a theme. That makes no sense! You would lose all your data all the time.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

Honestly that's exactly why I didn't root for 3 months. But once I found my exact setup now I just know how to setup each new ROM quickly. After that point now its just fun to tinker the phone and try the cyan nightly. It's really better to just root it. I was in the same spot as you I know what you mean.

Well as long as you're wiping between different ROMs you should be fine. And even if you are there won't be any permanent damage. The only way you can brick your phone is by installing a bad/old radio.
Even if there's a limited number of "flashing" the phone you won't reach it before you get a new phone.
Likely in the millions of times.
Don't worry about it.
Its the same question like "how many times can you write data on a sd card", you already got a new one when you reach that number
Flash memory has a certain number of read write times until it fails. But that number is so high that it will be years from now.

You have to wipe/install a new rom and copy logs to sd card from either other or advanced menu, havent used amon_ra recovery in forever
So, how do we get to the answer of how many times one can flash their phone?

Hey, I am a total newbie but I would like to flash the nightlies as well. I usually backup all my apps and settings using Titanium Backup, do a Nandroid backup, wipe and then flash the new ROM. However, backing up all apps and settings using Titanium Backup and restoring them after flashing the nightly is quite time consuming. Even worse is arranging the application short cuts / widgets on the desktops after a fresh install.
Nandroid will allow me to go back to backed up version after I have played around with the nightly for a few hours. But then I lose all the features of the nightly once I am back to my old ROM. As I am carrying only a single phone, it becomes mandatory for me to restored the Contacts, Messages, Applications and Settings after flashing a new ROM.
It may sound stupid but is there a better and faster way of doing things without having to restore all applications/settings from the backup so that I also could try out the nightlies? How do you manage this?
For the most part, you can flash nightlies without a wipe, if you're going from CM to CM. If you see weird behavior after flashing, then go back and wipe, and if that doesn't work do a complete wipe and flash.
If you're on another ROM, then I would definately wipe...

I strongly suggest wiping cache and dalvik-cache prior to flashing a new nightly, it prevents **** and doesn't affect your settings/files
Haven't been on CM for awhile, but if you use Launcher Pro or ADW they have Homescreen backups. Have had good luck with MyBackUpPro too.

questions about rooting captivate

i have been thinking abour rooting my phone for awhile but i have a couple of questions.
1. is there any prep i need to do before i root.
2. will i loose anything if i root.
3. do i need to save my stuff on the computer like pics contacts videos etc.
4. what will happen with my apps settings and all.
5. how do i choose which rom to choose and how do i tell the difference between them.
i think thats all for now thanks in adavance
I had these same questions just three days ago. I was able to root my device with one of the guides here on the forums. Rooting is pretty straight forward and for this portion you wont have to do anything crazy except backing up pictures and essential files should you mess something up.
As for roms, I used the cognition 2.3b8 that can be found on these forums. That and because you can install it using rom manager. Good luck and read the guide. Also check youtube.
Pretty straight forward since they have the one click root/indoors for our phones...google one click root for captivate or on here and if u need more help you tube it up...good luck
1) No
2) No
3) No
4) Nothing
5) Nobody can really answer this for you. Check out the different ROM threads and decide which one you'd like the most. I can tell you that I've used most posted here and my favorite, though highly modified by me, is Assonance. For installing a new ROM then numbers 3 and 4 will change to yes and unless you don't mind losing it, don't expect anything will be saved, but back things up beforehand. Always.
Before loading a ROM download and get used to "Titanium Backup" and "Rom Manager".
Just download z4root ..search the forums..its an EASY app that let's you root your phone from the phone...just run the app and click root ...it will reboot and that's it

ok last question i think. i have launcher pro plus and ive changed my icons to how i like them will i need to redo everything after i root and install a rom or will it stay the same and just change the internal stuff?
and z4root wont let me do it cause it says my phone blocks apps not in the market place.
I'd run the one found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
Very simple to root your phone doing it this way. And worse comes to worse you could just copy the update.zip into your SDCard and run it under your recovery menu on your phone.
You will not lose your setting or icons in launcher pro by rooting.
Please explain your comment on z4 root. What are you doing that gets you to that comment.

Does rooting do anything to the market ID? I basically want to root so I can eliminate the pre-loaded bloat, install non-Market apps, and do full backups. Will this interfere with getting any AT$T updates, especially Froyo when it eventually is released?

device Id will probably change, but all you have to do is while on the stock rom download android id changer from market and save your stock device id. Then after rom is flashed install android id changer and load your id and change it back to the original.
You will likely have to be at stock in order to use at&t ota updates.

Like I said, I only want to gain access to other apps and controls. I do NOT want to flash a custom ROM. Does rooting alone change the Market ID or is that only a consequence of ROM flashing? Also, all the instructions direct you to put the phone into USB debugging mode, b ut they don't say whether to turn this off when done rooting. Is that done automatically?
No rooting does not effect your id. Rooting is easy and safe. It is what you do after youroot that can get sticky
I give you a week or two tops, then you will be asking what is the best custom rom

Stock rom / stock rom no bloat

My ideal rom would be just the same as my phone is without all the verizon/bloat apps. I don't mind some of the things but there is just so much junk added to this phone. I have setup monster but honestly I really dislike it. Tons of things randomly crash for me and I would prefer to have the standard droid three home not the basic droid style home. Does a rom like that exist? If not does anyone have a link for the stock rom just like I received it? Actually I would like a link for that even if there is an alternative in case I want to revert.
Thanks

There are a few ROMs out that are debloated. There are also scripts that will debloat your phone. As an alternative, you can freeze the apps you don't want with TiBu.
As for the stock ROM, did you do a nandroid before flashing anything? If so, just restore that.
Indeed why don't you just use the debloat script on your stock rom?

So, I was pretty excited to root my phone and ended up skipping the nandroid part (not that i didn't want to do it, but I didn't notice that step)
So, can somone just host their backup so that I can load it?
Or does someone still have the stock rom that can hook me up?

Then installed the boot strapper
then the bootstrapper maid for the droid 3
then installed monster1.1 from sd

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

To make sure you are rooted use a file explorer app (root explorer or ES file explorer)and try to copy a file (pic, video or anything) to /system folder
If it's saved then congrats you're rooted
