[Q] Samsung Galaxy S: Black Screen after Flash

I have a SGS with firmware I9000XWJG5 and Root. I tried to do a Speed fix, but afterwards it was slower so i tried to flash the phone with the I9000XWJG5 firmware again.
After the flash, the phone rebooted and i came to the recovery menu. There the phone wrote:
update media, please wait
and in the next lines:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/st110
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed.
Now when i try do start the phone, i get a black screen after the bright S
What i have tried: Flash agein with and without re-partition and Factory Reset
Has anybody an idea what i can do?
and sorry for my bad english

Fixed... use odin 512

Thread moved in Galaxy S I9000 General.

I can definately help with this one, as I worked through it last night...
I found that if you're trying to flash the JG5 rom (as mentioned in Modaco's thread) with the 513 Pit file, then you'll get the black screen of despair!! For some reason the two combination of the two don't work.
However, if you do a google search for Odin PIT 512, then download this file
You will be able to download the 512 PIT file instead. Now use this in Odin3 to flash the JG5 rom and you should have no further issues....it worked for me.
I also discovered that Samsung have just released a later firmware, so I just flashed this one on top of the JG5 one...I have a nicely running phone now.

Mine was completely knackered. Couldn't get to recovery either. Flashed Modaco's MCR R3, after the JG5 flash, using all the files in the JG5 download. Working a treat...

hello, i got the same problem. trying to reflash with I9000XXJPY 2.2.1 and the 512 pit, but still the same problem.

Same here.
I tried JS3 and going back to JP6....and always the same result.
I'm obviously missing something. Maybe my 512.PIT is corrupted. I get the black screen and the same /dev/block.st110 errors in recovery.

i beleive you need to have a CSC file also for the odin flash.
i sorted mine like this:
Downloaded some JP2 odin files [used this as this was the only one on Samsung-firmwares that had all 3 PDA, Modem and CSC Files. flashed this using a .512 pit in odin. - this allowed the phone to boot normally.
connected to Kies and using reg hack [set to XEU] managed to update to JPY.
the following the Darky guide, flashed the CF Root kernel, installed the ROM Manager from the market, using the recovery mode installed the update.zip file for clockworkMod.
Formatted everything in ClockworkMod
Factory Reset in ClockworkMod
Installed Darky ROM V8.0 Wipe

thanks mate ! after a huge scare sorted mine with this firmware as well, this after I tried several other newer firmware packages from samfirmware and was ,slowly but surely ,starting to lose hope ...
for some reason this particular firmware JP2 seems to fix this problem

fix for black screen after flash with no recover or download mode working.
Hey All.
So like the subject says, you flash and then your phone restarts or whatever, and then you get the normal galaxy s startup, with the sound and the visuals, but then that's it. Henceforth you are greeted with the two lights (if its a Bell Vibrant) from your options and back keys.
To fix it use the attached file. Its called ADB or something - I just know it works. It was a fix for the galaxy s phones that didnt have the recovery/download mode stock.
so here is how it goes:
1. download adb to your desktop and unpack it (if its in winrar or zip or whatever) to a file folder named adb.
2. open a command prompt.
3. type "cd" and then the address of the "adb" folder. so for example it should be in C:\Users\your user name\Desktop\adb. where "your user name" is your user name a duh.
4. plug in your galaxy s via usb.
5. type "adb reboot download" in the command prompt. copy it using your mouse as well.
6. turn on your phone.
7. press enter in the command prompt, then keep copying and pasting and pressing enter until you see the download screen on your phone. each time you press enter it says device not connected or something but just keep trying.

Fixed in a while I explain

My solution
With Odim 1.3, pit 512,
in my case JH2 I9000T GT
But for Europe JM8
Mark Re-partition, phone EFS clear and Phone bootloader Update
Then start
This process started well
JPM Process
Then uncheck re-partition, phone EFSclear and Phone Bootloader Update
JPM Pit 803 and firm JPM
Start

Is it normal for T model, or you just use weird and dangerous settings for fun?

Wiping EFS can lead to test-imei number and broken product code. Be sure you haver a backup of that folder before wiping that.

criskelo... I tried this and I didn't get anywhere :/

I had the same issue and it took me 2 hours to resolve (with a lot of pain, lol).
I've simply flashed the XWJM8 version using odin 1.3, no pit file and HENCE no repartition ticked.
It then booted to recovery console, because there was another error (can't remember which one cause I was too excited).
Anyway I did a wipe, cash clear and reformat SD card at the menu and let it boot.
After that I have flashed the latest version XXJPY also without PartitionInformation Table. (PIT). Then all the wipe and format stuff again.
I have now to go from scratch to setup anything again, but hey, at least my phone is alive again.
Some additional info. I also had that connection symbol on the screen with exclamation mark and triangle....so I thought I was done (due to trials with pit 512 which hung), but after removing battery and some trials I was able to enter download mode again....
Why happened that? I DON'T KNOW! I simply wanted to reflash the XXJPY stock rom, this time with pit512 and it lead to the topic of this thread!!!
This su**ed a lot, I didn't even modify something before!!!!
So: Less is even more! Don't fiddle with EFS and bootloader options it worked for me even without a pit!
Thanks to sardor for the initial idea, the XWJM8 seems to be a fixing rom for that when used properly, anyway to load a pit without to tick repartition is not a useful setting!
Well I was a long time reader at this great forum, IMHO the best regarding phone stuff, because there is the most useful knowledge shared.
I hope my first post will save other phones as well from sending it to repair.

I used
I9000DTJG4 firmware Australian Optus
With pit 512
And odin3 v1.3
Got all the files from
samfirmware . com / WEBPROTECT - i9000 . htm
Had to sign up but it’s free
However following criskelo's advice I unchecked the re partion box in odin
Even though the site above tells u to check it
And it worked

Also the reason I got here in the first place as because I messed around with lag fix in clockwork recovery when I don’t know anything about it.
I was lucky this time but it’s really not worth playing around with things you doing understand.

I was messing with Darky's Rom which alway cause problems for me and found myself in the same situation as the first post.
What worked for me.
JM8 (2 files = code to PDA - Modem to PHONE) + Repartition + 512pit
after reset different error so goto download mode again then:
JPM + 803pit
Default OS reconfigures, Thank Fook

Background info: I orginally tried the Lagfix and bricked my phone, this is how I finally fixed it...
1. Using Odin v1.82
Put Phone in download mode
Use PDA: I9000UGJH2
Use Phone: Modem.bin
(both files came from samfirmware, I9000UGJH2 download)
Use: 512.pit(also from samfirmware at the bottom of the i9000 page)
Check Re-Partition, Auto-reboot, F. reset time, phone EFS clear and Phone bootloader update. I know everyone above says don't but I tried their way first and it didn't work, I would recommend you do try their way first and if no results try mine.
2. Using Odin v1.82
Put Phone in download mode
Use PDA: I9000UGJL2
Use 803.pit
Check only Auto-reboot, F. reset time

you saved my phone after me corrupting internal SD! just did my victory dance though hands still shaking a bit

Just thought I would add to what got my phone back running again after having the Can't mount DBDATA error. It's a bell I9000M.
Used Odin 1.3 , Flashed Darky's resurection per his instructions pulled battery once complete, went back into download mode and flashed stock JL2 with Odin , re-partition un-checked and no Pit file and after that my phone was running again.

Can not find the link for the JL2 stock rom but it's in the general section somewhere.

the xxjpu version worked for me
tlick repartition
add 512 pit
tick and add pda
tick and add modem
tick and add csc
go to download mode
connect usb
press start

Hey guys, I've read the above posts but frankly it's above my skill.
Some how I ended up with the same message that the OP got.
Can someone walk me through the steps to completely fix my phone and get it back to bone stock?
I'm not familiar with PIT and other files. I need someone to hold me hand on this one...

Was also messing around with darky. decided to go back to 9.5 for now. also got the error, then did what cddt said (thanks!!).
first flash - different error (something about CSC)
for second flash i used JS7 + 803pit + no repartitioning
worked flawlessly Thanks!

Hi,
I have bell sgs and I tried this and since then my phone is on boot loop. I can only go in download but not recovery. IT all started when I installed the boot loader for gingerbread...

My current firmware version is:
PDA: I9000XWJM6
Phone: I9000XXJM3
CSC: I9000OXXJM1
It was the version that i updated after i bought the phone to unbrand it. Since i have no possible way of using Kies to update (belive me i sucked every thread about it and no way i am getting the MTP USB Device driver on win7x64) i used odin to update and all went well.
Now i am courious about the Froyo JPO firmware and decided to give it a try since it's finally announced from samsung, the thing is that using ODIN v1.3 with the s1_odin_20100803.pit file and following the BIG GALAXY S FAQ (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596) it says and i quote
Procedure:
1.Open ODIN. (And close Kies, if you have it open. It is important to have ODIN open BEFORE connection the phone via USB!)
2.Select the PDA/Modem/CSC/.PIT files in Odin. (.PIT and PDA are required. CSC and Modem are HIGHLY recommended. They may be necessary depending on the PDA! Try flashing all three BEFORE reporting bugs, if you only used one initially!)
3.Check the "Re-Partition" checkbox.
4.Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding VolumeDown+Home+Power.
5.Connect your phone with your computer and wait until the drivers are installed.
6.When the drivers are installed, click Start.
7.The phone will be flashed and once it’s finished, it will boot up. (Do NOT disconnect the usb-cable, remove the battery or otherwise interrupt this process!)
8.You have successfully flashed your phone.

Of those files only the modem.bin appears on the odin files section all the other files i can't choose them (PDA and CSC) have i downloaded the wrong firmare or something? what should i put in PDA and CSC files?

You don't unzip the tar file. instead you keep the tar file as a single file, apply it as "PDA", leave the other 2, phone and CSC blank then start flashing.

I came across this question yesterday. I downloaded JPA and it's a single tar file. I apply it as PDA and choose 512 pit file, after flash I found the firmware has been updated to JPA/JPP.

I think after the flash completes you unplug the cable, do a factory reset, then wait for it to get into system. I read a post saying that it could take longer than 5 minutes to get into system for the first boot. Or if you like, you can try the JPA firmware I flashed. I guarantee it works 100%. Also someone said JPA is a bit better than JPO.

Did you uninstall lag fix before update? this could be a problem.
remember to undo lag fix and flash again.
try the JPA rom I posted above.

Tell me something ehe12 you installed did you installed JPA using 512.PIT file? in sam-firmware it says it's 803.pit file.
Another thing, in this thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828504 it says JPO it's for european countries and JPA is for Finland, i am from PT.

I use 512 to flash JPA, no problem. I just did it again and this can be confirmed.
JPA and JPO are both new, I don't know much about their difference. I will flash JPO later to see if it's really different.

Ok this was completely my bad for not RTFM all the way in sam-firmwares it says
$ I9000XWJPO
Flashing way I9000XWJPO: First I9000XWJM8 with RE-Partition and 512.pit. Than I9000XWJPO without RE-Partion use 803.pit.

Did you tick "repartition" at flashing?

When flashing JPM8 yes, when flashing JPO no.
But the first time with JPO yes re-partition was checked

ok can you flash to any 2.1 rom? if so you might want to flash back to 2.1, then flash 2.2 again.

Hi, I just flashed JPO to my phone, no problem at all.
FYI, I didn't flash the way they taught online,"flash to JPM then flash JPO". I straight forward from JF3 to JPO. also I didn't use 803, I use 512 as pit file. no Re-partition, only tick "auto reboot" and "reset time". durling flash, Kies must be closed, other it will keep connecting the phone and Odin won't be able to start flash.

[SOLVED] Phone wont start after ODIN flash with xxjpo/xxjpp

I have tried to get my phone to work but it seems that it will not boot after i have attempted to flash it....
I have used all the different pit files and used odin 1.3 and 1.7 and neither of them work. I have tried using JPX, JPY and JPO/JPP and nothing.

I was on froyo 2.2 version xxjpp . Then I read in samfirmware . com that to flash this firmware we had to go back to 2.1 xwjm8, and flash with repartition selected and 512 pit. I put CODE_I9000XWJM8.tar.md5 in PDA and MODEM_I9000XXJM4.tar.md5 in phone. I did that with download mode and odin 1.3 and It seemed as if I was back to square one when the screen got stuck at splash level but when I took out the battery and switched on it booted in to 2.1 firmware. I went in to download mode again and flashed 803 pit with 2.2 firmware (JPO_JPO_U_JPP.tar) with repartition unselected and I am back to 2.2 froyo again and happy .

I spent 6hours today, restoring my phone, but it didn't worked. Untill i saw your post, THNX mate, this is the solution, im back and running with firmware 2.2.1!!

seems like the real trick to fixing it is to fill all three options in odin with a csc, modem and pda (or maybe even use more than just the pda option) and tick repartition as well and then it fixes the invalid partition problems.
Glad its all working for you tho Its a very stressfull time the first time you see that message appear

(Bricked?) [E:Can't mount] Used Odin to restore back to stock now it won't boot up

I have a Rogers i896 build 10.10 running froyo. I just tried to restore back to stock rogers froyo JL1 using Odin 1.81 and using a 512 pit file. I entered into download mode and the odin process complete then the phone reboots.
Now it entered into android system recovery <3e> . with this menu:
Reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
format internal sd-card
it also says the following...
update media, please wait
E: Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_db_data_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions
copy default media content failed.

I'm a complete noob at this.. I read a lot and thought i'll give it a shot to flash a new rom.
Update. Tried to reflash, didn't work.
Tried to reflash with Stock Rogers Eclair, didn't work just went to the Recovery <2e> same error message with can't mount ....
I think this is bricked...
Any way around this?

did you just use the pit file and thats it? did you use the tar file in the pda slot as well?

Sounds like a bad flash, can you get into download mode and try a reflash?

I just pulled out the battery to turn it off, and managed to get to download mode again. This time I tried odin 1.7. Odin says passed... but still the same error message

One thing I noticed that the re-partition check box on odin is checked when i put the pit file in there. I didn't realized it was checked so I clicked start with that on. It wasn't checked when I first opened the program. I just tried to reflash with it off, and same result

Is there no one here that can fix it?

I guess I was suppose to uncheck re-partition and the stock rogers roms does not include cache.rfs and dbdata.rfs file inside.
Anyone know if there's a way to get a ROM that includes those files in them so I can reflash it?

your phone isnt bricked. bricked is a specific thing and has a special screen.
flash 2.1 when doing stock. 2.2 stock includes 3e recovery and it requires all update.zip files to be digitally signed. there is a way around it but its extra steps. instructions here

I tried to flash to stock 2.1 with odin but same thing happened.
It boots into recovery and i can't do anything... except its 2e instead of 3e that i saw before.

whats the exact filesize of the tar you used?
also if you dont re-partition, you dont need a pit file. (the p stands for partition)

The exact file size for the TAR is 238 MB (250,420,736 bytes)
I didn't know PIT is re-partition until after the fact.

Ok my steps to break it:
Flashed UXJL1 with Odin 1.81 using 512.pit and repartition checked.
Boot lands in recovery with can't mount error.
Steps to fix.
Used Odin 1.81 to flash the JH2 firmware from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36.
Did not check partition, did not load a pit file.
I've seen that error before but I couldn't remember how I fixed it. I think the key is simply to Odin flash 2.1 firmware using no pit and no repartition. I chose the package above because it doesn't change your boot loader and is compatible with newer phones.

flash into the AT&T 2.1 with the one click, what you probably did was Odin into the rogers 2.2 without turnning off lagfix. for some reason the rogers version doesnt actually repartition your phone.

Thank you so much! This worked! Except it now shows ATT for a brief moment but that's not a big issue. I went ahead and installed Serendipity smoothly!
