[Q] HELP! Booting to recovery? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi -
So I used the Super-One Click method to root my phone and the I wanted to make a Nandroid backup and went to boot to recovery and I got a screen with three android-dudes on skate-boards and a message that read:
"HERC XC SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.47.0000 (HERO20000)
MICROP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-2.42.02.10.29

CLEARSTORAGE
Delete all user data?
<ACTION> Yes
<SEND> No"
This happened once before when I was trying to boot to recovery before ever rooting. The problem is, I don't know which button is "action" and which button is "send." Last time, it didn't really matter because the phone was relatively new and I hadn't even put many contacts or apps on it.
Of course, I made a back-up and everything, but nothing I've read has warned me about this screen so I'm kind of worried I messed something up from the get-go and it causing this. Or maybe this is perfectly normal and the answer is so obvious that I can't see it trying to look at all the details??? Please??
Thanks!

Wow. Never seen that before.

I've gotten this several times when trying to boot into recovery as well. There is a name for it but not sure what it is exactly.
I do know however, you want to press send, which is the green call button on your phone, otherwise it wipes your stuff. When you press it, it'll reboot the phone, so immediately after pressing the send button, hold down the home button and end call button so you can boot into recovery.
Not sure why this screen pops up, as far as i can tell, it happens if you press the end key then the home key when holding them down. I've started holding down the home key first, then pressing and holding the end call key and haven't gotten that screen in a long while.
Hope that helps.
edit: and in case you were wondering, "action" is pressing the trackball.

That is the boot loader, which everyone has, and the action button is the track ball and the send button is the green call button.
When you want to go to recovery hold down the home button and press(not hold, otherwise it goes to the boot loader) the power button.
Also, I don't know if the one click rooting method installs a recovery image, if it does not you need to flash one first. Be sure to check and read the instructions completely.

I have used the one-click root method and it does not include a recovery image. You have to go into the market and get rom manager.

Thanks!
Well, you all gave me great info, but I had already found out the hard way that the "action" button was the trackball. Oh well. I'm using ROM manager and ClockworkMod Recovery, so no worries there. Of course with ROM manager, I can just reboot into recovery from there. But its good to learn things the hard way.... twice... now I will remember what is "send" and what is "action."
Thanks again!

Another option is to hold the Volume Down button and the power button. This will take you to a screen similar in style to the boot loader. One of the options from that screen (I think Home) will be recovery.

can you grab an adb lolcat? the boot loop could honestly be due to any number of reasons .. also try to reboot with CALL+MENU+END and then while it starts hold down HOME button ... if you get to recovery then you're not bricked
I can't connect to adb shell (i start my phone and try to list device with adb: i see nothing)
And start with CALL+MENU+END doesn't work (continu to reboot)
Thanks for your answer.
If you have other solution ...
I try to start my phone with trackball hold down and power button and it get me a black screen and the phone led is BLUE.
Can it help me?
I have the same problem. The phone is totally original. It started yesterday when, for an unknown reason, the com.android.phone not responding started to popup.
Now the phone seems to be in a eternal loop on the HTC boot screen with the annoying chime.
I can get into the fastboot mode, but the phone is not in debugging mode...
At least the phone is still under warranty.
If you can get into fastboot or recovery you dont need debugging on
I fixed the problem by doing a hard reset. I lost everything, but at least the phone is working as new.
Backup. Backup. Backup.
And yes, 3 identical copies in 3 places isn't unheard of.
Concerning my contact, I though they where sync automatically to my google contacts, but it wasn't the case.

hey
how have u done hard reset?
i try everything , nothing worked!!
sorry for my enghlish....
Yes I did. It solve the problem, but I lost everything that wasn't backup.
wavesecure is good it backs up sms contacts and pictures and call logs i think it also helps you when your phone is lost its in beta but still works

G1 bricked, please help

Hello, I got hold of an HTC G1 but it seems like it's bricked. When I turn on the phone it shows the T-Mobile G1 screen then boots into recovery every time, even though I never press the home button. Looks like this phone boots into hboot by holding the return button instead of the photo one, is that normal? I tried restoring the phone with the DREAIMG.nbh but when it instructs me to press the send button or any other key to cancel nothing happens. When I am in the recovery mode the keys seem to work as I can alt+s and alt+w. Is there some way I can fix this or might this be a bad keys/buttons case?
Thanks for reading.
Is it rooted? If so, try Flashing a ROM?
I don't think it's rooted, I have the official recovery img.
Redownload a new copy of the DREAIMG.img from another reliable source. I recall downloading one that was corrupt when I first rooted my phone and it gave me a few days of trouble. Try reflashing from there.

Heres some stuff to try.
Just noticed your not on the eng-spl so you don't have fast boot.
reboot your phone while hold down the home key until you hit the recovery screen.
hard reboot your system by taking out the battery and putting it back in (unplugged) and then boot the phone while holding the home key.
Maybe you can give some insight into what you did exactly to get to this... any new roms, kernels, spls, radios etc...
Held down home key and pressed power button, but it immediately goes to that same screen
Bought it off craigslist thinking i could fix it lol.. and if i couldnt i knew i could just ebay it and get my money back + little more
Sounds bricked. Can you bring it up on adb when its in hboot?

I'm Almost Positive If you have
S-On you won't be able to get into Clockwork Recovery... if thats what your using?
But anyways you have to get S-Off somehow? I used the Unrevoked method along with Rom Manager which I used to Flash the Unrevoked.zip from my Sdcard!
Also a Easier way to get into Clockwork Recovery is to Hold the Home Button and then just Tap the Power On Button wait a Second then Let Go of Both Buttons! That Should Direct you Straight to Recovery without All the Volume Down, then Home Steps!
Good-Luck!

Incorrect because to get S-OFF you have to be able to enter recovery mode to flash the Unrevoked zip or whatever method you used. Also flashing through ROM Manager is just an automated method of flashing.

I don't know if he's talking about the manager or just Clockwork Recovery, but you can still have Clockwork recovery without being S-off. When you root your phone with Regaw's or some other one click rooting mods, they usual install a CW recovery (I think Regaw's is 3.0.0.5) which I used to root after my last RUU to get the latest PRI about a month ago (probably when the 1st question was asked anyway).
You know if you hit the action button, menu and the end/power button it will reboot the phone (if your looking for a way when the phone is frozen and you don't want to pull the battery).
Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers (and soon to be fathers). I need to change my signature too. I'm flipping between 3 rom's, so less will be best.

Installed CM7 with Gapps for 6.1....HELP!!!

I initially intalled CM7 after cleaning cache and Dalvik and backing up my current ROM using Clockwork. it went good unitil after booting I accidentally installed Gapps from 6.1
Now it boots and loops from the blue CM7 screen to the green andriod asking ' Touch to Start '
I dont know how to get out of this loop or to go bak to recovery manual mode. Please Help. Any chance we can fix this
Thanks
Pull your battery to get out of the bootloop. Then press and hold home while pressing the power button. That should take you to your recovery, where you can wipe and reinstall CM7.

EDIT: I am late to the party, nvm.
I did what you said. When i press power and home button the only menu option i get is 'Clear Storage' to which i pressed yes and 'Menu reset' which i pressed yes. it reboots and back to the loop. Back to loading CM7 and 'touch to begin'
The party is still on. As said installed CM7 with Gapps for CM6 accidentally and now stuck in endless bootloop. Trying to fix it. First suggestion hasnt worked so far
OK so you don't have a recovery (I'm guessing you tried to use rom manager = bad idea). Do you have ADB?
I think I do but have never used it ir dont know how
Is there any hope of recovering the phone or is it just better to get a replacement from Sprint

You need to pull the battery, press volume down + end button (at same time) in order to get to the bootloader. You should then see the skateboarding androids. Press the home button to get into recovery and wipe/format boot, system, data, cache (just to be sure) and then reflash and flash the right gapps.

I doubt sprint would even look at it, let alone fix it or replace it, once they see that you rooted.
Also, I've flashed older gapps with cm7 and didn't get loops. My guess? You forgot to data wipe before installing cm7.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Ginger-on-Hero action here!
Thank you so much. That finally got me into reboot. Now waiting for reboot with fingers crossed Thank you
Well something went wrong and for all you guys out there with Sprint. They did replace my phone. All i had to do was call and tell them that I was at their Service center to fix the phone and those guys couldnt fix it and it is stuck on the boot screen. But i think i will manage to salvage this before my replacement arrives
Lessons Learned
So the big lesson here is when you need to get into recovery press the volume down and the home button simultaneously and your home free. Thanks to all who helped
Update - Issue Solved
So i did mange to get into recovery and wipe everything off and reinstall cm7 again. Now i hope to flash the right gapps and ill be in gingerbread heaven

If you have a sprint hero, that is actually not correct.
hold home and press power = recovery
hold vol down and press power = bootloader
I don't know what's up with your phone, and I'm glad you fixed it, but if I were you I would reflash a good recovery image just to be safe. Also, make sure when you're getting ROMs you get them from a thread in hero cdma and use the gapps also linked in the OP of that same thread (don't use rom manager IMO). Always flash from recovery and follow the correct steps, that way you should not run into "issues" again. Also, my best encouragement for you, is to search and read. Happy flashing
If you have big fingers, pressing the power button can sometimes press the search button or back button, often causing you to boot into bootloader instead of recover.

Ha. I actually place the phone on a flat surface a press the buttons.

[Q] I think I bricked my phone :( :( - PLEASE help!

Hi,
I tried the regular fastboot method to load CWM recovery.
Whenever it got to the point of loading the recovering, it would just say "flashing recovery on the device...".
Then, when restarting bootloader and clicking on "recovery", it would just shut down the phone.
I decided to experiment to try fix the issue, and I came across this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1928551
I downloaded the ZIP file and I ran the root.bat
It flashed some boot images and now my phone wont start
It is stuck on the "warning bootloader unlocked screen" and will not go any further.
Please help . I'm so scared that I've bricked my phone. Is there ANYTHING I can do?
Thanks in advance for the help!
The methods u used can't brick your phone
Reboot in boot loader by pressing the power button and volume - button at the same time. Just at the moment the phone shuts-down/reboot release the power button. It will boot in boot loader. After this flash cwm or twrp again and with the volume down button go to recovery. Select recovery with the volume up key and u are done. Cwm/twrp is flashed and will boot in the recovery.
In recovery I would install the ROM from Omar. It will restore your system and boot.IMG so it will work. Don't forget to wipe data.
If this doesn't work flash the home made fast boot files somewhere in the development section

The above applies when connected with usb.
If I press all 4 buttons without USB connected, it just reboots and gets stuck on the "unlocked bootloader" message again

You should let go only of power button and hold vol.down button (at least for me)
If your PC finds hardware - can you do fastboot devices to check whether it is actually recognized properly?
And last thing - which method you used to load recovery (and were you on ICS\JB)? You were rooted and used automated methods or you unlocked bootloader and wanted to root afterwards (manually through fastboot)?

You are a GENIUS!!! A LIFE SAVER!!! I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am. BOTH of your points fixed the phone.
I could never get into recovery becuase I was pressing the power button. I could never get into fastboot becuase I was holding both the power and volume down button.
So, for anyone using a RAZR I... please note the following SIMPLE things:
1) In the bootloader menu, the power button does NOT select the option. The VOL UP button selects the option
2) To boot into BOOTLOADER : Hold both power and vol down buttons until the phone restarts, and then RELEASE the power button, while still HOLDING the volume down button! It will then load the bootloader.
Again, THANKS so so much for reviving my phone for me. I was going crazy without a phone!

This has never happened to me before but don't stress one bit because nothing ever permanently bad comes from this. You can forget about it being destroyed. These aren't iPhones, haha. You can get it going again pretty easy I hear. Just don't stress because there is no point and you WILL get help. Nice that it is solved. I gave u the solution on my first post, but nice that someone els did a better job in explaining it
There is almost no possibilities to brick your device if u only flash things like the boot, system, recovery or data partition. They can he solved very easy. If u flash the other partitions like the radio u can get a problem.
