video chatting - G Tablet Themes and Apps

What is the best app for video chatting form my gtab running TnT lite lastest. My wife uses Win-win on her laptop. Are there any that are stand alone no need for an internet connection just a home network.

Not exactly answering your question I'm afraid, but Yahoo messenger works for me for video chat between my wife's laptop and my G tab (or is that the other way around?)!

Could you please give your version of Yahoo Messenger + Video plugin
My version force close.
Thanks.

Under "About Messenger", it says version 1.3.1.4583
I don't know how to find info about the video plugin?

Could you attach apk for both please?

I am not able to find Yahoo messenger in the market. I did find a Y! Suites app an installed it it had a link for messenger when I clicked on it I was prompted to login so I did. I was then shown a offer to install yahoo messenger for Android, I click on it and get a,message that the protocol is not supported.

That is Odd. I was able to install Messenger 2 weeks ago on my GTab and now the market is showing the same results as you. No Messenger available to download.
I did find that it can be searched for from the PC web page, but mine shows installed already. Can't verify if it still be sent to GTAb or not. Might want to try that route.

Glad, I am not the only one having the app not found issue. Thought I was having problems with the market. I have had problems finding other apps that have been mentioned in the GTablet forum.
Anybody have a solution or a better suggestion as to which app to use that will allow me and my wife and kids video chat. Would really like to find an app that would allow this while not necessarily connected to the internet but still connected to a wifi home network.

As far as I know, there is software that allows video conferencing, but I highly doubt that they have been ported to google apps. I know most of those out there are meant for corporate use.
but there is a simple solution to video over your home wifi. move your location so you are in close proximity to your wife and talk to her....lol.
All joking aside I wish I could help you, but until someone creates an app that allows video over private wifi, your kinda stuck.
But I can confirm that yahoo video does work.

I thought thier is a new Skype release just out.

It's possible to run my ReelPortal app within your own network, because the server software is also available for free. However, there's a catch, when you first start the ReelPortal app, it needs internet access to retrieve data to start up. After that, you can unplug the internet, and it would work fine. Another catch is P2P mode would not work without internet access, because P2P actually relies on an Adobe server. But within your own network, Client-Server mode would be fine, because you'd be using your own server.
ReelPortal is designed to run indefinitely, so unless you exit the app, you don't need to reconnect the internet. When set up properly, it can serve as a video intercom within your home/office.
A brief description of ReelPortal: http://reelportal.blogspot.com/p/read-me.html
If you're interested, here's a long thread on using it with the gTab:

This thread, with confirmation from a Skype staff member, seems to say that it IS coming for Android but will be locked to a carrier - Verizon. Not sure what this means in terms of XDA being able to hack it for other devices, but there you have it.

Spotify

Any idea when the Spotify will be available?
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/24391/Spotify-launches-android-app-mobile.phtml
Thanks!
No news on the official Spotify client yet, but "Droidify" an unofficial client showed up in the Android Market today. It's free, but like all 3rd party applications that use the Spotify API you need a Spotify Premium account to use it.
I've been using it all afternoon and it's really very good. It works even with just a 3G connection, you have access to all your playlists and can create new playlists. Album art is displayed when you play tracks and you can even read artist bios. It can run in the background and even when the phone is in standby.
It's not quite as polished as the official client will undoubtedly be and it doesn't allow for offline syncing of playlists, although it does cache songs so frequently played songs shouldn't need to be downloaded in their entirety every time.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/se.bobcatzed.droidify
Working very well here
Not tested much on 3G, crappy reception in my flat.
Can't find this on the market, maybe been pulled?
Pulled yes, (but works if it's already installed)
Can someone email me the apk? It's no longer on the market.

Can someone send it to me also? Thank you in advance.
Yeah, I'd also like a copy of the APK if possible. PM me if you can help me out ^^

Just to say, I found that the app force closed on me every time I tried to log in. But, after adding just a single playlist through the Spotify-PC-app, and tossing a few songs in it - the force closing stopped. So, if anyone else is experiencing this, try adding a playlist with a couple of songs.

Apparently its just been pulled from the Market.

-- oops, just noticed I am rather late with the news, sorry --
Only did some quick testing when I got the app, but now it seem have a 50/50 chance of playing the selected song and logging me out when I press play... Probably blocking something somewhere
Can't wait for an official one
can you send it to me also? im already premium. Thank you in advance.

Moto Phone Portal

http://home.leakdroid.com/2009/10/06/fresh-leak-moto-phone-portal-for-android-coming-w-sholestaodroid/
Pretty cool. Works with my G1 and Cyanogen 4.1.99. Try it out.
http://rapidshare.com/files/305341350/PersonalPortal.apk
Recently some of the system dumps from the upcoming Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid hit the Developer community, and they have been trying to piece the puzzle together of what the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid is all about. We got our hands on a new app which looks like it will be front and center when the device finally hits the shelves, Motorola Phone Portal.
Those that remember using the Motorola Phone Tools app to hack their Motorola’s back in the day (I’m getting all “Ahmad – Back in the Day” about my v600, v810, and RAZR) will instantly recognize this little gem, but it’s been updated for Android and provides some pretty cool functionality. Basically, Motorola Phone Tools (MPP) serves as an all-in-one phone manager that allows users to easily view, edit, create, delete, and play their contacts, ringtones, photos, wallpaper, and media. The key difference now is, the app is web-based and you log into your phone from directly from your browser! No installing “modems” and drivers on your Windows machine (painful), just fire up the app and press the “Connect with Wi-Fi button. When you press the button, the app prompts you to either turn on Wi-Fi, or connect over USB. For this experiment, I chose Wi-Fi.
MPP lets you add/edit/delete/browse your contacts, photos, bookmarks, browser history, and media in an easy-to-use interface. Playing media directly from the device in the browser worked very well, and the picture viewer/slideshow feature is pretty damn cool. So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser. If Moto adds a Social/Sharing aspect to this, they will have a winner on their hands.
So there you have it kids, a little taste of what’s to come with the Sholes/Tao/Droid. The original Moto Phone Tools was a pretty handy app (when it worked), and the new MPP looks to be just as functional, if not more so. I am sure it will help a lot of users manage their contacts/media/content when it gets released, and the ability to do slideshows and play media from your device directly from your browser is pretty slick. I hope Moto adds more features and functionality to it as time goes on, but this seems like a sign of good things to come. Grab the .apk file below and play away!

Doesn't work on my hero
It asks to activate wi-fi even if it is already active. Tried to start-stop wifi before and after i opened the application. any guess?
Thank you!!
Ok, I figured how to make it working, the phone must be connected to a network to be used, but I though it creates an ad-hoc wi-fi connection to work with.
BTW great app!
This thing is great. I wonder why more people aren't interested in this....
Sounds cool, I'm going to test this out later
pretty slick...
Nice that you can mange contacts and view the contents of your sdcard etc. Similar to AFile and others but a bit more "moto". Could be neat! I imagine that the majority of users would never set up a secure login though, could be fun to sit in a crowded bar and scan for active devices running this on port 8080. Imagine the havoc that could wreak!

does this connect via USB or only wifi?
What does this do exactly? I have to connect to my wifi network and make sure the computer is connected and then what?
Is there a specific process to join the phone and the comp together?
I tried using a remote desktop client but didn't figure out how to get it working, is this the same?

Skype?

How come Skype is not available in the market when it is for all the verizon droids?
Can we sideload Skype? (after root of course) Does anyone know a link towards it?
Thanks!
I would like to know how to do this as well. My boss only likes skype to IM with so it would be great to do it. I am more than willing to try stuff out if someone points me in the right direction...
No native Skyp app for Android yet, however there is Fring (search the Market). It's a mobile client that integrates with many communication/messaging platforms, including Skype. It can even handle videocalls!
A caveat: it's developed by an Israeli startup of some shady provenance. God knows who else will be listening to your conversationgs and reading your chats
ignore this post. apparently i read "k's" as "w's", so i thought we were discussing Swype. Carry on.
Skype not Swype.....
needs some skype. they show it off on the droid commercials. they even say its in the app store. they cant lock it down to verizon only can they?

actually they can. Verizon and Skype have a deal setup. its also going to be impossible to hack since it doesn't use the data connection but actually the regular voice line. since ATT would charge you per minute to use its voice channel it would take the purpose out of skype

so Fring is as close as we'll get then?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDD9unymFB8 - this whole video is showing that it does in fact use the voice network and not the data.
Just encase you might of had doubt in what I was saying.

Fring is pretty okay, actually. It supports voice, video (for both outward and front-facing camera), and IMs. When you get a Skype call or IM, it rings, just like it should. Voice portion works great over 3G. Video is not restricted to W-Fi, and appears to work quite adequately over 3G as well.

strange!!!!!!
because I got one from the marketplace, but its written as T-mobile netflix, so I guess it would only for t-mobile user, not sure though
i got it in marketplace also.
when you go to the market place click on apps> entertainment> free. its the second one there. i just downloaded mine on to my phone.
Is there a XAP available?
There was a .xap of Netflix I found on some other thread but I won't bother linking to it as when I had downloaded and sideloaded it before I had live activated, it wouldn't go past a Netflix splashscreen. You probably have to download legitly from marketplace cause it checks for a license :/

HBOGO....

just released, it works on my Incredible with AT&T, anyone try the Xoom? I know they are working on a honeycomb version but was hoping it may work on Xoom if you pull the apk
I was able to use the web browser version. It is a flex application, so it runs flash. Gets laggy sometimes if they're sending high quality video, but it is watchable.

I've heard that on the Xoom if you go to hbogo.com you should be able to use that until they release the tablet app. However, when I go to that site I can't do anything. It has 4 squares: "On Your Computer" "On Your Ipad" "On Your Iphone" and "On your Android Smartphone" but none of these do anything when I tap them. I don't see anywhere to log in either.

i cant watch from browser either, which browser are you using?
On the HBO website from Xoom, you have to use another browser, like Dolphin, and specify a desktop agent in settings. That will get you past the page you are referring to, but, I am not able to log in to my directv account - the window inside the page doesn't allow text entry.
Or in Xoom browser, in the address bar, type debug:about, then go into settings - set UA to desktop. This allows you to get past the initial page, but I can't type my Directv login information in the popup window.
Anyone able to get around this?

I don't have a Xoom. Just the OG Droid. I also get the message that it isn't supported on my device. I read a thread that said that putting my device in airplane mode before opening the app, then launching would throw a network error. At that point, taking my phone off of airplane mode and then trying again lets me use the app.
That got me thinking there must be something calling home reporting my device model. I set my phone for WIFI and I had my router log what URLs were being called right before the failure. The one that stood out was this one:
catalog.hbogo.com/apps/mediacatalog/rest/settings.json?category=an
So I had my router block that specific URL. Presto, damn thing works on OG Droid with no issue, at least on WiFi. Is there any way that URL can be blocked on the our devices instead or can the APK be modified to not call that URL?

Won't work as the app has other things it needs from that site. Blocking the URL itself though does the trick though.
