Hopefully someone here can better explain the differences, pros, and cons of each.
I've been doing some quick research and looking around, even played with the Nexus S at Best Buy, and it seems the main (and ONLY) difference is that the NS has a bigger screen than the N1.
It's my understanding that they both share the same processor, both have the same amount of RAM, both have the same camera, etc.
The only "advantage" to the Nexus S would be the bigger screen and more on-board memory for apps and such, correct?
I can get the Nexus S for $200 through Best Buy and could in turn sell my N1 with it's dock for $400 (already have a buyer lined up). My biggest question, however, is what does the N1 do that the NS does NOT do? Would this be a logical thing to do or is there something that the NS would be lacking by comparison?
Well the NS does not have an SD slot so your stuck with the 16GB of storage.
The NS does have a FFC.
The CPUs are both 1GHz but the NS' is of a newer architecture and is a bit faster especially with games.
The NS touchscreen is better.
I only have an 8GB SD card in my N1 and it's been more than enough, so the "limited" 16GB that the NS has shouldn't be a problem for me.
I'm not sure what "FFC" is...can you define/explain?
Faster or even equal speeds in the processor is fine. I just knew it was close and wasn't inferior to the N1 like a lot of other phones that have come out recently.
And what exactly makes the touchscreen better on the NS? Better resolution or just better responsiveness?
EDIT: I think I just figured out "FFC" means "front facing camera", correct? Not something I'd use, but doesn't hurt either.
It seems that there really isn't a reason NOT to do this exchange. Everything that the N1 can do the NS does and then some. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything that I'd be missing out on if I got rid of my N1 after having gotten used to it for so long. Seems like it would be an easy and smooth transition.
How easy is it to obtain all Google Market apps that have already been purchased when switching devices like this? They're all tied to the account, correct?

Pretty much, yes. You can get some exceptions - eg CoPilot Live is fiddly to transfer, but the Android licence is valid cross-device (you need to deactivate the old device first). In general, if you've purchased from the market and use the same account on the new phone your apps should be available without issue.
I've transferred from G1, to Magic, to N1 without losing any apps to date (although I've sworn a bit at CoPilot )
Keep in mind the Nexus S doesn't have a notification led.
Apart from the glossy plastic i think the Nexus S is a good device. If it doesn't have the screen inaccuracy or power button failure issues of the N1 it could be a worthwhile upgrade.

I asked myself the same question and I came up with these answers.
N1 is better built
upgradeable sd slot
has a notification led
has less a tendency of sliding out of your hand
same specs
and samsung is notorious about never releasing any updates for any of their phones.
Don't forget the nexus s does not have 2 Mic's. There have been some reports of bad call quality on it in noisy environments with background noise.

NS has the NFC (near field communication), which one day may be nice.
The 16gb limit does not really present a problem.
The screen is bigger and is supposedly better, but I didn't see anything that really made the new screen stand out, it is nice. It is curved slightly, which is kinda nice.
NS does not have the same build quality, and does not have the unibody, metal design. The Nexus S does feel cheap next to the N1, but it is not showstopper. N1 has a much cleaner design and looks much 'sexier' IMHO.
NS does not have the trackball, much less the lighted trackball of the N1. NS does not even have a charge indicator.
NS does not come with a case or dedicated charger (has the brick and a data cable)
NS with gingerbread is fast, but does not yet have the dev support of the N1.
I felt the cameras were about similar.
NS does not have the second mic (as someone else pointed out). Not sure about call quality of the listener on the other end. I had problems with reboots, but Google knows there is a problem and is working on it.
Why o Why did they change the order of the home/search/menu/back keys in the NS -what a pain.
NS no SD slot.
NS does not have the dock pins on the bottom to use with a car/desktop dock.
NS has a front camera and more RAM
I would wait until Gingerbread comes out for the N1 before you jump ship. You have 30 days to send the phone back to best buy if you don't like it...
Just felt that the new NS was not 'Google' enough for me. Just missing too many little things. It is like they were trying to make a new Nexus that is *more* like the iphone. Kinda a sellout thing to do in my opinion.
My opinion is to keep your N1, the NS is not a real upgrade in my mind.

another difference... Both have 512 of RAM. N1 has 512 of "ROM", while the NS has 16gb of storage, 1gb reserved for apps and OS.
Thanks for all the replies, guys! After reading some and doing quite a bit more research, including watching comparison videos on YouTube, I have decided to wait.
The only "new" feature that I'd use with the NS is the bigger screen, but I don't really feel that should stand alone as a reason to "upgrade".
The speed differences in the comparison videos were very, VERY minimal and it appears that the N1 has better graphics handling than the NS. It's possible that the minimal speed differences were simply due to the NS having Gingerbread, so hopefully I'll see an increase with the upcoming update for the N1 although if I don't, it's no big problem since it's still the fastest phone I've messed around with.
Another reason is the battery. I've gone as long as 36 hours on my N1 with a single charge and normal use and usually have 60-70% battery life left after a full 15 hour day of being in use. I hear the NS is barely lasting a day for most people which is more than likely in account for the larger screen.
The MAIN reason I've decided to wait, however, is simply because I don't want to be locked into a 2yr contract for the same phone with a bigger screen when the inevitable dual-processor and expanded function phone(s) come out. The N1 does absolutely everything I want/need out of a phone so I'll be waiting until something comes out and totally blows it away and makes it obsolete.

Hopefully it'll be a new Nexus, made by HTC, with great specs!
I sold my nexus one last week and got a nexus s the same day. I loved my nexus one but my logic for selling my phone is deprecation of the phone when i sell it. Sold the nexus one and dock for 370, not great. So that means I payed $200 for the nexus s. If you are in the market to sell it later you will get less for it. In the next couple of months dual core and 4g is coming out and the value will drop for both phones but i feel that the nexus s will be valued higher. It also seem that the resell market for Galaxy S is bigger then the nexus one, due to the fact that more people know what a Galaxy s phone is.
Some thoughts about the nexus s. The phone seems the same on paper but in actuality its much faster compared the nexus one running gingerbread, this could be that the roms didn't have the drivers. The screen is amazing and i like the look of the nexus s, but miss the dock. NS is a lot lighter in the hand but feels cheap when you're pressing the volume and power buttons. The BIGGEST difference is the responsiveness of the touchscreen.
I have ZERO REGRETS on my purchase of the nexus s.
I have purchased the Nexus S and am still on the fence of whether or not to return it. My previous phone is the Nexus One. The reason that I am on the fence is for the same reason why some people are still trying to decide whether or not to purchase the phone such as there is no led notification, missing sd slot, NFC not really popular at the moment and probably will not be for the next year or two at least in the US, not a dual core phone.
But I will admit it is a nice phone, does have a nice feel, beautiful display, sexy all black face giving it that stealth look, the touchscreen is responsive I don't get all of that wonkiness I used to get with the Nexus one and even with the capacitive touch buttons, those work the way they should. Very responsive in terms of apps seem to respond and open more quickly compared to the N1. It would be nice for google to explain why they chose the phone they chose for there N1 successor, instead of trying to come up with reasons for them.
I have 30 days to decide whether or not to keep the phone. Since I am a T-mobile customer, from as long as I can remember they never really had the hot phones, it was always places like verizon or sprint that had phones that seemed more appealing. And even if t-mobile did end up getting a hot phone it would be like months later after the other networks had that phone for a while ex. razr.
If i had neither an n1 or nexus s and both phones were for sale, I would go for the Nexus S.
I was very excited about this phone when AT&T announced that they would be adding it to their lineup but now I'm starting to have some reservations because of its size. I've seen some videos on youtube comparing the size to the SGS II, Nexus, Skyrocket, etc. It looks freaken huge.
I know the HW wise the AT&T version and the European version are different. I don't care about that, I only care about the size. Does anyone find the phone to be too cumbersome or bulky?

In my honest opinion, no. It's big, no doubt about that, but I have never felt that it's too big. I have slightly larger hands than normal, but many of my friends have tried it and none of them complained about it being too big to hold. My girlfriend on the other hand can't even hold it in one hand, so it's probably not a good phone for people with small hands.
It's thin so it goes down into my normal sized jeans pockets without any problem.
My recommendation: If you have normal sized hands and pockets, buy it, you won't regret it.
i find the size to be perfect, in fact, i would happily go up to 5.5inch or even 5.7 if they made it! after a day, you wont notice any difference and you'll wonder why you never had a huge screen phone before (because no-one made one, but thats not the point).

The only way to find out is to try it out your self. I remember thinking my sgs2 was too big until I actually held it. But it does boil down to personal preferences. Also I don't think anyone here will tell you it's too big(It's NOTE FORUM)

Sorry couldn't resist above comment.... On a serious Note (pun intended), you will probably get used to the handset within a couple of days after seeing everything on a larger screen and then wonder how you got by all this time with smaller screens.
Just to be clear the screen size is 5.3 inches but the phone from top to bottom is 5.8 inches correct?

yeap that's correct. I had doubts Note would be too big for me but after i get used to the large screen now i'm really happy with dimensions. It's big but not bulky and heavy. It's actually very light and slim. I didn't know that galaxy tab 7" plus has phone capability on honeycomband os. I thought to myself after i learnt it today if 7" would be even better. But i checked the technical spesifications and learnt that it is twice heavy (360g) with lower cpu power (1.2 GHz) and wider chasis around screen. So i'm pretty happy with weight and dimensions for now. Just longing for ICS official release to take full benefit of the hardware and use tablet mode like HC software wise.

putting my S2 aside his newly acquired Note, My S2 was like a toy and was amazed by how much the screen looks better than my S2 .
Then we go back to the shop to get myself a Note as well.
Its big, obviously but after 3 days of use, I found the size is perfect.
except for sometimes one hand operation is virtually impossible.
it is awkward at best as a one handed since you can't reach the far Corners or the other edge of the screen. but outside of that it's fantastic
I just received my white note literally 2 hours ago and when I opened the box and first saw it sitting there I said out loud "wow"
I played with it for an hour and then put it on charge, while i do some work I need to do
I have since made and received 3 or 4 calls and I am used to it already and I do not consider it too big. But I am a person who always considered phone screens to be too small for anything useful, and until this phone haven't been motivated to change my HTC Touch HD. yeah I know sort of out of the arc.
Also I was considering buying a tablet, purely for aeroplanes and trains as to use my 18.4 inch laptop in a plane etc is a bit inconvenient. (but needed for how I use it generally). now i shall no longer buy a tablet as even with my short play i can see it can do what i was considering a tablet for.
But you really need to go and hold one and try it for yourself as other peoples and my opinion is always going to be from our perspective, which may not suite yours

Thanks for the opinion guys. I'm getting real excited about it now. Only a few more days before we can pre-order. I know the specs aren't the same but I hope the AT&T version performs just as good as the international.
I was like you and had some concerns about the size, but I ordered the international version anyway. I've had it for about a week now and I find the size to be a non factor.
I have small hands. I can still use the phone with one hand with some maneuvering, but I don't find it too distracting. Sometimes the bottom of my thumb joint hits the applications button by accident when I try to reach for something in the far left top corner but I learned to adjust to it.
I love the phone and its size. I got used to it very quickly and don't even think about it now. It fits fine in all my pant pockets. The screen is beautiful and makes reading, watching videos such a joy. I don't think I'll be able to go back to a phone with anything less than 5" now.
It's just a wonderful phone.
Had the Galaxy Note for 4 days and it gets smaller by the day.
I'm on my second day with the Note, and am still adjusting to the size. By no means do I regret getting it, but it does mean that I need to walk a bit more carefully with it in my front jeans pocket (yes, they're a rather slim pair). I wouldn't dare sit with it in that pocket.
This is the first phone that can legitimately replace 98+% of my need for a laptop on-the-go, so I'll gladly live with that sacrifice.

On a serious "note" .... The 5.3' Screen size is amazing. So much on screen real estate for browsing, gaming drawing. There is a reason Samsung is selling so many Galaxy Notes. I was just typing something on my iPhone 3GS (Which i use for iPod purposes in the car) and damn that screen felt like a calculator hahah ...

You can always check out the device when it stocks arrive, Initially I thought it was very big for a mobile phone but after testing out the dummy phone I found that its actually a perfect size for a mobile phone for either landscape or portrait use.. I use it mainly in portrait. Also going back to a smaller phone might be hard for me which Im going to do eventually.

Galaxy Note it's not too big, the other phones are too small. Screen size on the phones have been increasing for years. I remember my Nokia with a 2" 176x220 screen, and thinking that you can really read some text there (previous phones had monocrome, 2 text lines screen). Then it went to 3.5" screens (the same as the iPhone, jajaja, it has the same size I had in 2006).
I remember the times when people said that 4" was too big, and now only the iPhone has a screen below 4" (and it will be solved on the iPhone 5). So 4.3-4.5" is normal for many people. 5.3 just makes it better, more glass and more pixels to work with. I can type in portrait mode without pressing 4 keys at the same time. Playing a 720p video on this screen impresses everyone.

I still love the phone, the screen size is great and the white Note still gets a lot of attention over a year later (most people call it or actually think it's the mini ipad). Well I just successfully ordered a 16gb Nexus 4, now I am trying to decide if I will give it as a gift and keep the note or try something new. Does anyone have both and can tell me the pros and cons?
I like the Notes screen size, sd card slot, TW and honestly that it's still a unique device however I like the specs on the Nexus 4, NFC, wireless charging, and LED light. I feel the note is actually better looking than the Nexus and although I heard the Nexus has great build quality it will just got lost in the sea of black phones versus my white Note. I am not too concerned with the 16gb, I used to have a 16gb iphone and never ran out of space. I honestly am torn, I am not sure if some of the new features outweigh the screen size, uniqueness, and TW? Any other opinions? I realize they will be bias in the Note section.
Also any comparison on cameras, I love how great the pictures come out on my Note in the dark. My friends with iphone 4 and iphone 4s always want me to use my camera since it takes such better pictures than their phones when the flash is on, I wonder how the nexus 4 camera compares to the original Note camera?
BTW don't care about removeable battery or the spen, I barely ever use it.
I suffer from a severe upgradeitis, and since Nexus 4 is actually affordable (which couldn't be said about the GNex), I am jumping ship and getting myself one. I will probably suffer because of the smaller screen (I really got fond of Note's size), and I loathe the lack of microSD slot, but I love everything else about the N4.
I am with the N4...
You'll suffer for:

less vivid colors
lower quality of the camera
spen (if you use it frequently)
You'll like:
Google updates
smaller screen (will let you use it with one hand)

I was thinking about getting one, but i don't like the hardware. Smaller screen and it's actually thinner than the Note, but it looks like a damn brick. Most of you don't care about these things, but i do
My Nexus 4 arrives December 10th. For me, I'm going to miss the screen the most on the Note which I still think is one of the nicest to look at. My wife has the One X which everyone tells me is the best display on a phone, but we both prefer the colours and general impression of the Note, even if they are unnatural.
Biggest reason for the purchase is that I'm tired of Samsung's BS with software updates and closed-source platform. I want the latest version of Android when it's released, not months later. I use aosp anyway, have never liked TW.
Things I expect to like about the Nexus are the smaller size (I don't know why but after a year of having the Note I'm starting to find its size prohibitive more often than I used to) , LED notification, proper Butter, software updates and general speed.

None of you is bothered by the lack of an SD card slot? To me, this is definitely a showstopper along with the non-removable battery (iPhone style for the lose).
My main concern about the Nexus 4 is that it is just generic Android. I don't like the bloat around the other implementations such as TouchWiz, but there's a couple of dealbreaker bugs in stock Android that Samsung, HTC etc have fixed. I don't know why Google haven't.
In particular the Email client can't work with Exchange when offline. Deleting emails on the device leaves them all on the server still, even after connection is established and sync run. Makes it pretty useless for managing emails on a commute. Samsung, HTC and even Motorola have fixed this problem, but it's still in the base Android and has been since at least ICS and possibly HC. Google don't seem interested.
It gets even worse with Imap, where it puts all the emails you've deleted back on the device once you sync. Again HTC and Motorola have fixed this, although Samsung has this problem.
Seems a basic issue, but means I won't recommend these devices for corporate use until it is fixed.

I don't care about non-removable battery, I only take out my battery if I need to access my SIM or SD card, so not a big deal for me.
Lack of SD slot and puny internal memory is a bummer for sure, but I've decided I can live with that. In return, I get stock android experience without the need of using custom ROMs (and let's face it - while CM10 for the Note is awesome, it has its issues), I'm always up to speed with new Android releases (instead of waiting for CM to catch up), awesome hjardware, and great looks. Fair tradeoff in my opinion. I will mourn the lack of SD slot and lack of FM Radio, but I'll deal with it. I got my Note last year only because it was carrier-subsided, and I couldn't afford to buy an unlocked GNex.
Got the phone in, so far I rooted it. I need to play around with it for a bit before I decide which phone I want to keep.

It's amazingly fast and already with 4.2.1
I'm rented by the price but lack of micro sd ruins it. Out of the 16 gig you will be lucky to have access to 11gig, as with other phones. I love my music and have a lot of roms on board so 11g is nothing.

Can I just ask around a question, real quick. What's all that speed for? (casual) gaming?
Nexus 4 for me is the Android version of an iPhone, and unfortunately I am not meaning it as a compliment. As someone already stated in this topic, no sd card, no removable battery just means that if you want to take lots of pictures, videos, get your off-line Navigation with the entire Europe Maps (about 3.7GB) on your device there is not much left for anything else. I have seen a review where they state that only 12,3GB are available for the end user. That might be OK for some people, but I am not one of them.
Another thing is that if you want to use it a gamers phone, with this storage and HD games now available you will be able to get 3, maybe 4 big games in it, which is not something I would call ground breaking.
Last but not least, the battery in the phone will loose its charge over time. I am not a type of person to carry with me extra batteries and swap them around, but after some time everyone notices that their battery is not what it used to be. Specially when you want to buy / sell a second hand phone, being able to change the battery for a new one and enjoy your phone as when it was unpacked is something that Nexus 4 users will not be able to experience without getting their hands dirty and probably voiding the warranty of the device.

I know the OP doesn't care, but for me this is the showstopper (which would only change if a reasonably priced 64gb model came out). As others have said, this is the iPhone of Androids, and not in a good way. The lack of removable battery gets me as well as I use my phone so much that I need either two batteries or an extended battery.
But the pros are Butter, good updates etc. But personally ill stick with the Note until the Note 3 (or something better arrives), mainly through choice than cost.

Well, I have a the distortion going on. Like, for the quality of the speaker to be good and not have any type of audio artifact, I need to keep the volume at 30% at all times. Anything higher, and certain pitches starts distorting/cracking. I guess one "fix" for this would be to change the kernel code to restrict the volume range of the speaker so that the maximum would be much lower. It could be the case that the kernel is actually overdriving the speaker module which results in the distortion. Whatever it is, it is definitely annoying to hear the edges of a person's voice gets distorted.
It's like they opted to use the cheapest POS speaker module they could find with an extremely limited range. The speaker on the Galaxy Note is a world better.
I have both....the screen size is something to get used to without a doubt. It is so tiny, but it is bearable. The constant updates from Google makes this phone worth it seeing how Samsung is a POS when it comes to releasing sources.
I'm also seeing some banding on the screen. Not sure if it's because of the screen or due to the image used (low bit).
I have an RMA on the way soon and will compare how the newer unit fares.
As NickC42 pointed out, I don't like stock Google android for few of these nitpicking stuffs -
1. Does not support speed dial? Hello Google!!??
2. Email/Calendar clients are white background black text. Why can't they have optional reverse color?
3. Oh I didn't know about those Exchange Email annoyances - total dealbreaker.

All this can be solved in 10 mniutes. This is Android. Want everything out of the box? Buy iPhone.
My reasoning was why I do not like stock Android aka Nexus. If I have to install custom ROM, it defeats purpose of buying a Nexus device.
Edited: Ask yourself ahalford why do people buy Nexus device? Because they get update from God Google on day one. What is use of that update if it never fixes few of the basic things?
Edited 2: Maybe you have iPhone hidden inside your secret stash and know it enough to recommend to other people. How about giving us out of the box experience one gets from iPhone?

Coming from the 3VO, I have a bad taste of HTC in my mouth mostly due to poor build quality, parts, update speed. With upgrade due on 1 Aug 2013 I hope to get the HTC One. Can I expect more of the same or is it a new experience?
HTC is trying, but not hard enough...you'll see most of the same IMO, but it's still fairly early to tell (IMO still doesn't make a difference, HTC will never get their act together)
I've owned two HTC phones that both got killed on GB. Very saddening

If I say one thing, I have to commend you on your dramatic title.
The One isn't for everyone. Period.
If you are gonna need to be able to zoom on the camera at all, you're out of luck. If you need a crapload of storage space, same. The American Ones haven't gotten 4.2 yet (Taiwan + Int'l have). This phone gets hot to the touch rather quickly. If you damage the device, it is hard to replace the casing yourself. You definitely can't replace any of the internals yourself. There have been reports of shoddy QC with problems including: gaps in the unibody case, mushy power buttons, self-cracking lenses (which has yet to be verified as a defect) and dead/stuck pixels. EDIT: I had my device repaired, and my power button came back recessed by about a millimeter. Again, shoddy QC.
That's not to say other devices are perfect. The S4 seems to have cracking LCD issues or something. HTC one has the best low light performance of any cell phone camera. EDIT: Review say that the Nokia 1020 and 925 beat all other cameras, including the HTC One's. Zoe allows for living, breathing pictures. The (almost)all-metal case is like nothing I've or probably anybody else has ever held before. It's miles better than any plastic phone. The boomsound speakers are simply the loudest ever. NTM that they face you, and not your hands. Sense 5 is really an improvement over 4, and the battery is enough for 1.5 - 2 days of moderate use.
The biggest tradeoff you'll be making when coming to this phone is the picture resolution. The QC issues are somewhat rare (nobody reports a perfectly good device) and some say that the heating is actually good in that the heat dissipates rather than smoldering inside the phone.(EDIT: The device regularly reaches 105 degrees F while browsing. Not sure if that's normal.) I wouldn't worry about update speed. We already have 4.3 ROMs coming from the Google Play edition. I think Samsung has the best Reputation for old product support when it comes to software updates. That is, if you don't count Cyanogenmod and iOS. My GS2 runs 4.1.2, stock.
That's just an overview of what has been discussed about this phone on XDA. The choice is yours.

Very factual, thanks for commenting I feel kind of reassured about my decision.
This is a solid device. I'm still stock,UN rooted and it really doesn't do anything bad. My phone doesn't get super hot, it takes good pics, the o.s runs great, no lag. I unplugged mine this morning at 5:30am and I still have 20% at 11:23pm. When you get the phone get a good case.

I am impressed with HTC this time around. I pretty much wrote them off in the past but I think they finally got their act together with the One.
But like others said it comes down to personal preference. There are tradeoffs and you just got to play with all your options. But I believe the consensus is that HTC really stepped it up.

I came from the Evo 3D too and I hated HTC. I heard the 3D was the worst by far with OTAs and such. I really like the One for the build and while i miss some things (like the ability for an SD) it's easy to get over. I was considering the GS4 before the One, but I took a look at them side by side and I felt the one was much better IMO.
Great build, hard to fix parts (as mentioned above), Not too sure yet about update speed. I think you should go for it :good:
I recently purchased the One and I'm so close to returning it. I can't stand the fact that you can't turn off BlinkFeed, which is a complete waste of a very limited number if Android screens. The One gives you only (yes, "only") five screens max, four not including BlinkFeed. I need two screens alone for personal and work contacts widgets. I upgraded from the original HTC Evo and I already miss that old goat.
I miss my SD card too.
Why do people talk about phones' outer shells when 99% of phones out there are sitting in some Otterbox/case?
Have you thought about using a different launcher? No blinkfeed, more customization, as many screens as you like. Personally I use Nova launcher

Let me start by saying that I am an avid HTC fan. Been using all HTC flagship devices..but now I feel its time for a change. I love the One, especially the speakers and the feel of the device, but the camera is really bad. So now I was thinking of moving to the Z1...but before I do..I have couple of queries
1. Custom ROM: I ALWAYS use custom ROMS and I am not too impressed with the choices. Either way, since I have no control over which ROM version I am going to get, I was wondering if there are bootloader lock issues, or other things I should be concerned about? Do I really need to unlock boot loader before I install a custom ROM?
2. I read that the camera doesnt work if the bootloader is unlocked..is this still true? If yes, then how do you guys manage?
3. I read the speakers arent that great (and no comparison to the HTC one), but how is the headphone sound? I read that these devices use the same audio chipset and I know PureX audio (or something like that is great) is available. What is the general view?
4. Do I really need to get a case? (I HATE cases...just kills the beauty of the device!)

hi i am also htc fan had htc one replaced it for z1 due to purple tint issue
1)at the moment unlocking bootloader causes camera to break and sony might solve this issue in future
2)at this moment happy with the stock and some roms which can be flashed with locked bootloader
3)as compared to htc one not that much great
4)it depends on u r use i found no need of case
I can't comment on any of the ROM questions as I haven't gone in to that yet, but for the others...
Headphone sound is excellent. I bluetooth mine to some Sony MDR1BT's and the quality is very good. Very negligible difference between BT and cable operation. I have a few sets of high end cans and the quality is right up there. Can't say what the cheap earbuds are like that you get with the phone as I haven't taken them out of the packaging!
With the case, I'm 100% with you on that one, I hate cases on phones. However, the anti shatter film that they put on the front and back scratches ridiculously easy. Easier than most screen protectors I've used (also not a big fan of those either). The glass is meant to be very durable, but the film on top is not. I'd recommend a tempered glass set, pretty sure you can get them for the front and back.
Camera will break if you try to unlock, rooting and installing Xperia roms however are fine
Also I am really mad about the camera quality...
You should also know that you won't be having a lot of choices in rom and mode department, if you come from HTC (like me) you will feel a giant hole in Z1 threads...
Speaker is not going to be pleasing in anyway but you should know that this is a waterproof phone, so shouldn't be having high expectations, and finally I don't use cases and this phone really doesn't need one so no worries there

Hi mate
1. We have, for now, just a few custom ROMs, based on CM (PAC) or based on stock which is better solution for now - because we still have camera problem when we unlock bootloader.
And, yes, if you want custom ROM based on CM or anything else except stock you have to unlock bootloader because you have to flash custom kernel and it's possible to flash kernels only when you unlock bootloader.
2. Yes, camera will broke if you unlock bootloader, for now.
But, as you could see, few guys claims that have informations that Sony is already working on it.
Also, what's important is to backup TA numbers before you unlock bootloader.
On custom ROM you can't use X-Reality and you'll lost any chance to get it back even when you go nack to stock - if you haven't backup TA.
You have great tutorials for that.
3. Speaker is good enough.
You have MODs and you don't have to unlock bootloader to flash that MOD.
But headphones that you get with your phone are great - sound is deep and the base is strong and clear.
If you are using professional headphones you'll get even better sound.
4 Absolutely agree with that statement.
Z1 is beautiful device and it would be shame to put "condom" over it.
I bought front and back screen protectors (follies) and just ordered rubber frame for it.
You can buy rubber or metal frame that looks awesome and protect device but your device isn't covered with case and it's perfectly visible.
I would definitely recommed Z1.
I had few Xperia devices (I still have them) and I can say Z1 is the best device I ever had.
Elegant, fast and beautiful.
And....as we are on 4.2.2 and are very, very satisfied, you can just imagine how happy we will be when we get Kitkat for it

As for my reaction to the Z1 and it's performance, well i couldn't be happier, i'm not knocking the One, i think it's a fantastic phone and I would still recommend it to anyone.
I'm running a custom rom on my Z1 at the moment, Monx rom and it's superb, i've got CRT off animation and various tweaks by using xposed mod, i'm also running the google launcher from the Nexus 5 and all in all it's a great combination.
Audio, screen, camera, build quality, battery life, functionality and performance are all top notch, well worth the upgrade.
The bootloader isn't an issue as you can still flash custom rom's.

I wasn't very happy with my xperia x10 because of the updates, so I decided to give sony one more try, I come from HTC One to Z1 (Bell C6906), all I can say is very disappointed, the phone is heavy and more bulkier for a 5" screen hard to operate with one hand, speaker is lousy even compared to my old S3, camera is okay but not what it seems to be 20mp, the whites on website is yellowish even with brightness to high compare to the htc with auto brightness (but I don't have the yellow tint on the device) viewing angles are bad I just tilt the phone 10 degress and the color is washed out, I have to look at the device straight on, I keep my htc one any day over the z1, waterproof is just another gimmick, the phone software/hardware is buggy, it reboots randomly and I was on my 2 DOA replacement, finally sold the Z1 I hope sony can learn from their mistakes and make a better device on their next flagship but for now im staying away from their device because all those problems

The Z1 is a stellar phone, the only problem at the moment is development, however once the camera / bootlock issue is fixed i believe that will turn around, don't get me wrong i loved my HTC, but you really can't compare a last gen phone to a next gen phone and that's what these two are, regardless of how old they are, the 800 is the newest hardware available and if you want to compare it to another device then you should only compare it to another 800 (note 3 and G2) pitting it against the HTC One is a little like bringing a knife to a gun fight, it's going to lose.
As for the screen, I have to agree with you in terms of visibility, but then again i don't hold my phone on a slant when i use it so hardly anything to write home about.
As for the Camera, there is a manual mode so I suggest you look into using that properly before you judge it, simply using the automatic option is going to give you an 8MP picture with lots of features turned on to make it look as good as possible, hardly something a person with knowledge of a decent camera would do.
The bugs you mentioned are literally software issues which will be ironed out with further updates and as i said before once the camera / bootlock issue is sorted i have every confidence that they will be rectified.
As for the bulkiness, i actually like the size, i do have quite big hands so i guess it fits me, I did use the phone in the shop before i bought it so i knew it would work ok, i guess you should have done the same before commiting, bit of a rookie mistake in all fairness.
The speaker is a bit of a come down from the HTC One's boom sound speakers but in terms of loudness and with active equalizers on both, i think you'll find that the Z1's speaker isn't half bad and with them both playing infront of me you could hear both, the HTC didn't exactly drown out the sound of the Z1 so again I believe you should spend a little time tweaking your phone to get the most out of it.
The yellowish tint you describe I actually can't say that I have noticed it, but it's possible that your eyes are playing tricks on you as you've come from one screen to another entirely, check out an s3 compared to the HTC One and you'll see that the One appears to be washed out, but this is just a different screen, not worse or better, different people like different things.
Anyway, none of this matters because by all accounts you've sold your phone now, I just find it strange that you would go out and buy one and then find out all the things that you could have summarized in a shop ?
Either way, good luck with whatever phone you pick next, for me and a lot of others, the Z1 is the best of the bunch at the moment, so it's either Samsung's note 3 or the G2, and I do believe that both of those phones aren't without issues and definitely a pair of large phones if using it with one hand was an issue on the Z1.
PS: Lastly, the water proof casing for me is superb, I can use the phone in the rain (i live in the UK) for me it's a great feature and not a gimmick as you say, the last thing you need is something going wrong with your phone, only for the company to tell you it's water damaged even though you have never got the bugger wet before.
Just my two cents.

In real life everyday use you don't notice a huge difference between snapdragon 800 to 600 speed unless you are a benchmark freak, The HTC One doesn't washed out compared to the S3, you can notice the display on the HTC one a lot whiter and more sharper than the S3, I still have both devices maybe u are a defective One? I have tried the camera in 20mp manual mode play around w the ISO and EV setting I still think its not a 20mp camera phone more of a 13, i was able to test the g2 is felt nicely in a single hand use but is the power and volume key in the back is just not so good, I wish I could try the Z1 device here in Canada I went to many shops they don't even have a demo display if they did I would've tested it before I commited buy. As you can read in the forum not everyone z1 device is waterproof when its submerged in water and why a company dont cover water damage on their warranty, if a device is certified waterproof why not warranty it, I'm not saying Z1 is a bad device but the viewing angle is just deal breaker for me since my phone mostly on a table at work I don't always hold the device dead on
I'm personally using a One and bought my wife a Z1. The Z1 is pretty snappy but the screen viewing angles (while sharing video with someone) and sound is a disappointment compared to the One. The water proofing is top notch (tested thoroughly because of the 6 month accidental damage warranty). Anyone invested in the HTC Sense experience will face a few issues initially especially with migrating from the excellent contacts/ phone application in Sense phones. My wife is now using a purchased app to manage her contacts, ex-dialer or something. Z1's running stock rooted with Xposed.
And like others have already pointed out, ROM dev is pretty scarce on the Z1.
Try the 4.4 launcher and other apps on the z1, simply brilliant.
The OK Google voice activation is quality, works perfect an i've even got a scouse accent.
