Post What Where:
General - general technical discussion items, news, anything else that does not fit into the other fora categories.
Accessories - any items to do with components and/or accessories relating to your device.
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
Themes & Apps - anything to do directly with the development of themes and/or applications. Nothing else goes in here.
MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.
Similarly, don't make loads of "Thanks for your work here" posts in an active development thread. It's just as annoying to developers as asking when something will be ready. If a ROM is complete, then go ahead and thank the developer if you wish, but don't go into threads for devs only, and interrupt it to post "thanks". It's basically spamming, and is treated as such.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something. Developing isn't installing a ROM, or using a tweak, it's creating a ROM or other hack or tweak. If you haven't read for several days before starting out on XDA, you are likely about to ask something already solved. I registered on XDA when I first wanted to post, and that was to join in a discussion on something. Sure, join up and ask a question, but read the information available in General and Q&A first, as your question will have been asked before. Search is your friend here, become familiar with it.
Regarding when to post in development if you are not actually developing something, there is one occasion where it's acceptable. If you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development, and should be posted in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time. Something needs to be reproducible to be fixed effectively.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

thanks.
If you want that screen so badly, why not get an iPhone?
Maybe because the iPhone interface is cool but the iPhone itself is useless?

Well, phone alarm has an Ipod lookalike for sms and phone call like the image here...

The "today screen" thread is multiple pages long. If you post there you are going to get very little exposure, except from the few people following it on a daily basis. And besides, that's supposed to be for "showing" your today screen, not asking questions about it. Starting a new thread only makes sense. Try not to be so harsh.

If you had read the thread, you would know that the OP asked the exact same question in that thread that he did when starting this thread. Since nobody answered him within 5 minutes there, he started a new thread.
starting a new thread in this forum is felt like being bashed, even a noob will bash you straight like a barbarian, as if noob aint noob
anyway, there are certain applications that might customize your today screen, might want to check on ilauncher, or what i suspect, it could be wisbad advance DESKTOP that the OP used for today screen, helped with some iphone icons
I may not have that many posts, but I have been here long enough (well over a year) to know that people won't spoonfeed you the answers. You need to do some legwork yourself and search, read, search, read and search some more. The answers are out there.
When I got my 8125, I read every post I could about it. I upgraded to the 8525. I read and searched some more. Now I have the Tilt. I have read and searched my arse off to find the answers. I post very little because the answers are already out there, you just need to find the information.
This forum is great. There are great people here doing good things for the betterment of everyone who owns a phone. I read this forum all day long, finding cool little tweaks to try on my phone. I find a sense of satisfaction knowing that I know more about my phone than most people will ever know (or care to know) and I did that by searching for the information and reading.
While I stand relatively neutral on this issue, which seems to have spawned from thread to thread, I'm more inclined towards Lidberg's point of view. While I understand the needs of noobs in asking questions, but noobs do not hold the ultimate power to do everything just because of the noob status. As asking (especially starting a new thread) questions without first putting in some effort in searching (yes, the search function of this forum is relatively retarded), do cause issues. For a start, there is a case of a ROM cooker leaving/not-ROM-cooking just because a millions of noobs came in and flooded the thread with gazillions silly questions, that're probably answered within the same thread.
Having said that, I do not encourage bashing/flaming, also not encourage starting new threads unnecessarily (especially, within a time frame of less than 3 hours). While I sympathize (but not encourage) people creating threads when their phone is bricked, creating a thread on a 'non-life-threatening' issue (i.e. just for a pretty face) is just some what over the top.
Lidberg: while you are relatively a 'oldies' here, and you know your way putting effort in searching for answers, it may be helpful that you take a bit of your time to answering questions that is some what interest to you. And, if you were to have another 'noobs starting threads' issues, you may want to put your words in a slightly nicer manner I agree with you that you should not spoon feed them, but from what it seems, you are very good in searching for answers, and perhaps you should transfer this skill to the new comers
jakontil: while I like you being helpful in taking care of the noobs, you may want to divert your efforts in answering more (perhaps simple) noobs questions rather than putting the effort on going over a every going arguement (refer to the link below)
You may want to read / 'continue to express your opinion' on the thread below
Why are people on this forum so damn temperamental?
I guess my attempt at sarcasm didn't translate too well here, eh?
It wasn't that the OP created this thread, it was that he also posted on the "post your today screen" thread, and even asked the guy who originally posted that screen the same question. If it were me, I would've PM'ed the guy who made the screen and ask him how he did it. Problem solved.

Stuck on less than 10 posts?

If you are stuck on less than 10 posts, then you'll never get there.
I posted a few posts on Off-Topic forums, contributing jokes, 3 word story things, general fun and games.
These were clumped into one ridiculous looking post, putting my posts from 10 back down to 2.
I had a read through this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
Anybody spot what I've done wrong?
This site specifically stops new members from posting more than once every 5 minutes, and I'm not allowed to post on any meaningful forums, so I don't understand what the heck I'm supposed to be posting on!! Can't even post jokes without them getting removed!!!

The Q&A and General forums are as meaningful as the forums that you are obviously referring to (development forums).
The rule is there to stop absolutely ridiculously selfish noobs going into dev forums and creating posts (or even worse, creating threads!) that simply say "I can't do this.... I can't do that...."
Anyone that's been on here a while and now knows what they are doing will tell you, 100% accurately, that most of the time you only have to read a little longer and you find your answer. It's VERY unlikely that you have a question that hasn't been asked before.
Try contributing meaningfully to the Q&A and General forums for your device. You may find that you enjoy helping people, rather than just coming here to leech and demand answers (not saying you do that - just saying it happens).
Good luck mate

Ok, fair point, I was referring to this off-topic forum, which I thought was just for fun.
But my point remains: what did I do wrong to get my posts clumped together? I posted genuine posts in this off-topic forum as this site permitted me too.
And while I appreciate you were referring to the typical noob when you pulled out the big phrases ("absolutely ridiculously selfish noobs" ..... "I can't do this.... I can't do that...." etc.) remember, you don't know me.... you don't know what I was or wasn't going to post, suggest, answer, ask - you only assume
My question related to the forum rules (which I searched for ), and in what way - by posting a few jokes in joke forums - I had broken them.
Maybe the moderators should update those rules and make them a little clearer next time, particularly with regards to this 10 post thing.
Just a helpful suggestion.

I wasn't assuming - I wouldn't do that because you're right, I don't know you. I iterated the point in order to explain the type of person that has unfortunately brought about the need for such rules. They can be a pain for genuinely non-pleblike users, but most of them will understand the need for such rules as they tend to make the site that little bit better.
Anyway, just don't clump a load of posts together and you'll be fine.
The merge feature is automatic and happens to everyone, even Mods such as myself. You did nothing wrong in the aspect, however, I will be deleting this thread as it is yet another way to increase post count. Do as the poster above suggested and head over to Q&A to contribute some meaningful posts. If you have more questions on the rule, see the link in my sig.
This may or may not be what you're talking about, but the site did recently implement a change where posts are auto-merged if they are back to back within a certain time frame.*

We get tired of getting a million threads asking
For ETA's, like we are psychic or something.
Redundant questions get asked, even though there are like a million people who don't know what they are doing asking the same question on the same page of the board.
people making topics all day long about how they bricked their phone flashing a ROM from a different device.
It clogs up the board with useless topics, basically this boards has become very unproductive and Cluttered with dumb post/questions/fighting
Its really not fair for the rest of us, who are good members and take time to read and educate ourselves.
Put some stickies up or something to help these people that are tool lazy or dumb to read
We have had enough, these people deteriorate the forum

Probly a good idea, although number one priority should be restoring Searching within threads so people can find their own answers!

Let's start by deleting this post first. Useless!!!
OP seems to be knowlegeable so perhaps you can help?
What is Rooting?
How do i install a custom ROM?
Can i return to stock if i unlock my recover loader?
What is a CWM?
What is a Sticky?
Where is the Search function and how does it work?
***URGENT***
Can i have an ETA on the answers please?
TIA.
I used to help people in the Q&A section, but after a while it felt like Groundhog Day. The same questions over and over again. The bastards almost killed me! KILLED ME.
There are many stickies suggesting people search before posting.
Do they read them?
No...
Do the moderation team do their best to keep the forums free of spam/clutter/trolls?
Yes.......
Can they be expected to be everywhere at once and delete every single duplicate or pointless (in your opinion) post?
No.....
What can you do to help?
Use the report function on items that require moderation instead of starting a thread to moan about it....
Now, about those pointless threads cluttering up the forum.........

Hahahaha I'd rather not waste my time, seeing as how all the info you need is right on the first page of the development section.
Each of the questions you asked even has its, own thread, conveniently organized in top to bottom fashion. Very organized, so that the user can find the desired info quickly and easily.
Each thread will also come with a tutorial.....these, tutorials will wall you through whatever you need to do, it will hold your hand and guide you through it, to prevent the user from screwing up. The authors will even use bold capitalized lettering to emphasize the severity of some of the steps you take, and giving you the needed fair warnings, explaining that they Are not responsible for you're phone if out beaks.
What this means is If you're phone breaks, 99% of the time said user did not follow instructions.
clockwork mod is the tool you see recommended to flash, restore, and back up roms. It can be found on the Market. Of you do not know what something is or what a certain setting does, then don't mess with it.
At the end of the day I wasted 10 minutes of my life, typing on small cellphone, using sword with humongous hands and thumbs (excuse any typos) to answer some obvious questions that could have been found very easily....do you understand how my life would have been easier, had you just looked in the development section and answered you're questions

In our case make sure you have indeed an xperia x8.
Things are simple, if you don’t own an x8 and post your question about another phone you will just don’t get any answer and furthermore there is a high possibility of your thread being spammed with posts like “facepalm, this section is for the x8”,”dude are you drunk” and such things.
If it happened to make a thread in a wrong sub-forum/section the only way to move it is by kindly pm a moderator or by reporting your thread and ask for a moving.
Your question must be posted at the Q&A.
If you don’t know whether you must post your question at general (XRERIA X8 GENERAL) or Q&A (XRERIA X8 Q&A) section just post it at the Q&A, all question threads must be posted there.
Bump existing threads.
Some questions just don’t require a new thread.
But, make sure your question is similar to the thread’s you are reviving. Don’t use threads that are for an entire different question. Its up to your judgment to decide what thread is suitable for bumping.
Think about your question.
Don’t be overwhelming, take your time and think about what way is the most suitable to post your question.
Use English.
Before starting typing your thread make sure you are writing in English.
You don’t know how to speak English or you can’t write in English that well?
Don’t worry there is a chance that your question will be answered, if you have read the rules you already know that you can post your question at your native language but its important to add a translation to English. “How to do this?” use google translator, google translator maybe wont provide an accurate translation but it will translate most of the words, and you add the post in your native language as well, because someone from the same country can help you or he can translate in detail what you posted.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.

Add a good title.
Every thread in order to be posted must have a title. Be smart, add an attractive one, this way more people will view your thread.
Your title must contain your problem in short words, if this can’t be done add a title that partially describe it, don’t add titles like “HELP”, Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp”, ”read”, ”null”.
Also add [Q] at your title.
Describe as much as possible.
90% percent of whether your problem will be solved, depends on your question.
Describe in detail your problem.
You may add the followings:
Are you rooted?
What’s your baseband?
What rom are you using?
What kernel are you using?
Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
Have you done anything to try to solve your issue?
Add pictures if necessary.
Do you think that these informations aren’t needed? They are.
Members of this forum don’t use telepathy; you have to tell them what you have done.
Things you may avoid in your post.
Don’t ask “What’s the best ____”(rom, kernel, theme etc)
Don’t ask something before searching.
Be specific. Don’t write way too big or way too small posts.
Don’t be rude.
Wait patiently for answers.
Don’t pm random guys asking for help.
Don’t spam your question in multiple threads/posts.
Participate in your thread.
Answer kindly any possible question that you have being asked by those who are trying to help you.
Be kind to everyone.
Make them understand what you need/asking.
In any case don’t abandon your thread, people maybe want to know if at last you were able to solve your problem and what way did you follow.
Be grateful.
Thank everyone who helped you, sometimes those who didn’t really helped you may be great help (“in what way?” keeping your thread alive, helping rejecting way of solving and more…), so be grateful to them too.
Important general notes.
Be polite. Nobody will help you if you don’t have good attitude.
Be organized.
Don’t constantly bump your thread. As you problem remain unsolved, I think it’s okay if you bump your thread once a week but you may have problems with the mods if you overdoing it.
Don’t pm random guys.
Don’t demand things, nobody is forced to help you.
That’s it, I hope your problem will be solved.
If you have any comment or correction or suggestion please notify me by sending me a pm.
Thanks.
