Help with sideloading apps (like ADW) onto the Xoom? - Xoom Themes and Apps

Anybody have any tips or info on sideloading apps onto the Xoom? In particular Im trying to get ADW onto the Xoom, but I'm not really sure of the best way of doing this, since I am unable to find the actual APK for ADW on my N1.

I got Adw launcher ex to work on my xoom. Here's what I did.
Got on Root Explorer on my droid x
Searched for Adw
Found the Adw.apk file (forget that exact name)
Sent it to my xoom using Dropbox
Went on my xoom and downloaded the app from Dropbox
Installed it
Hit the home button and up comes ADWLauncherEX
IV been playing around with it and haven't found any problems with it yet. I like it more than the honeycomb launcher. I also did the same thing with handcentsms but I can't get it to send a message. I have service, it just won't send. Maybe they won't send messages over 3G.
Tell me if you get Adw to work.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk

I tried the stock ADW Launcher (not EX) and on reboot the Honeycomb boot animation never clears. I ran logcat and saw that the boot sequence is complete but the home screen never displays for some reason. Do you see the same thing with ADW Launcher EX?

No. it just loaded right up and worked fine. Idk what happened to yours :/ hmmmm

I tweeted anderwebs about it and sent him a logcat. Could be my setup but I'm stock -- not unlocked, rooted, nothing.

I am also having a similar problem. (Appears to boot fine except the boot animation never clears). It seems to me like the launcher never gets called or something.

Also, if you have the pro version of titanium and use dropbox you can do the backup and sync all of your files to dropbox. Then you can just open dropbox on the xoom and transfer the .akp.gz file to the xoom. When you open it you're prompted to unpack the file and then you can just install from that apk like normal.

I suppose I didn't respond to the op's question.
I used Linda Manager on my Magic+ to back it up, then again using Linda browsed for the files and sent over email to myself (which I then received on the XOOM). Root was not required and Linda is free.
Updates on how to get adw working on the xoom would be appreciated - I have my own version that I was hoping to use (my own personal tweaks). The problem exists with my modded version and market version, so hopefully the fix is translatable/mergeable.

I have done some more messing around. I enabled
PROFILE_STARTUP = true
in the source for adw and have found the following:
running on rooted dream running CM6
Code:
DEBUG/HomeLoaders: load applications
DEBUG/HomeLoaders: loading user items in Thread[main,5,main]

And running on unrooted XOOM
Code:
DEBUG/HomeLoaders: load applications

DEBUG/HomeLoaders: --> starting workspace loader
DEBUG/HomeLoaders: ----> running workspace loader (1)

DEBUG/HomeLoaders: ----> onDesktopItemsLoaded()
DEBUG/Launcher: ------> binding 9 items
DEBUG/Launcher: ------> binding 0 widgets
DEBUG/Launcher: ------> start binding items
DEBUG/HomeLoaders: ----> cleared application list
Both are somewhat edited to remove GC calls etc and time stamps, however the order of logs has been preserved.
The part that seems relevant to me is
Code:
INFO/ActivityManager: Displayed activity com.android.launcher/.Launcher: 3249 ms (total 3249 ms)
It looks like the activity isn't actually displayed on the xoom. Not sure where this comes from or how to fix it. Or maybe its just something to do with cyanogen being built in on the dream and 3rd party on the xoom. I will try some more testing later.

I too have been playing with the source to see if I could fix the issue.... for the life of me I can't figure out why it's not passing on the "hey I am displayed" flag... I even went so far as to try to use honeycomb only methods to "bring the app front" and that didn't fix it.
Have you made any more progress?
BTW: this isn't confined to the xoom.... its every honeycomb device I have tried so far... including the emulator.

I gave up and built based my launcher off of the stock one in gingerbread. It doesn't have the nice features of adw, but it worked on honeycomb. And I didn't need all the features (in fact I needed even less) so it worked fine.
However, on the ADW blog anderwebs has a functioning update for ADWEX honeycomb now and ADW in the pipe. Relevant blog post here.

Revert Hero apps

Trying to figure out how to:
Replace the 3-screen 'launcher'/home in JACHero Lite with Cyanogen's 5-screen version: Managed to 'push' it in there and delete Rosie but then it wouldn't boot - push'ed Rosie back and it would reboot, but then I couldn't 'clear defaults' on Rosie/TouchFlo and 'Home' (the launcher) doesn't seem to have registered properly :/
Replace the browser / camera apps with the 1.5 versions - is it possible to have the option of running both? I mean having both installed and choosing between.
If anyone can help me get this sorted would much appreciate! I have adb running...

Market Enabler

Hi,
Anyone got this to work on the Hero?
Tried it on a rooted Hero, but still can't see the app I was looking for...
Thanks
Phil
Moin
Same on my hero.. enable it and open market, nothing changed. when i reopen the market enabler its disabled again.
Weird....I could not find what I was looking for so assumed it did not work, removed the Market Enabler app.
Then later last night the ones I was after are now visible!
Seems it worked after all!
The market enabler script for the hero is somewhat broken. There is an issue registered for it and I've entered a workaround as a comment:
http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/issues/detail?id=5
Hmm...I think that this made it work for me then after runnning the app...
settings -> applications -> manage apps -> market -> empty cache
So, looks like a temp solution for the Hero
Edit: Or it may have been a phone restart that solved it. Or uninstalling the app after applying it? That covers all I did anyway!
I've tried the method you mentioned in the other post, but still a no go on my unbranded, rooted hero.
I run clear the dirs, run market enabler, and still no paid apps in market...
Do you have any other suggestions?
For me is the same, i tried all things i can find. But still have no paidapps in my store. I have a unbranded rooted hero.
On settings -> applications -> manage apps -> market -> empty cache is the button disabled.. dont know why.
Cheer up, I have an unrooted Hero from T-Mobile and I don't see any paid apps. I used to, though!
It works fine on my rooted Hero. Market enabler 3.0 beta. I choose O2. Emptied the cash memory for market then it started to work.
I can confirm that I installed Modacos improved Rom today and had to reinstall market enabler after a wipe.
The way that definitely works (for me half an hour ago) is:
1. Root phone
2. Install market enabler 3.0 beta (downloaded to SD-card, installed with Astro file manager)
3. Kill Market app (I used Advanced task manager)
4. Clear Cache from desktop -> menu -> settings -> applications -> manage applications -> market
5. Reboot phone
6. Run Market Enabler, choose German O2
7. Start Market

Bravo!!!
Just tried this in Denmark, and it's working for me, following your instructions step-by-step.
Bravo to you sir!!!
Market Enabler v. 3.0 beta is available from here: http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/list
Hi,
What are the O2 UK settings for this...or are they identical to O2 De ?
I switched successfully to USA, but wondered how to switch it back to UK ?
Thank You
Phil
Edit...Cleared Cache/Rebooted . Settings back to O2 UK

It appears that this also works:
1. Root phone
2. Install latest Market Enabler
3. Run Market Enabler, choose whatever you like
4. Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Market -> Clear Cache
5. Start market
No need to kill market app or reboot phone for me...
Edit: though it looks like you DO need to reboot the phone to restore the previous settings.
i installed market enabler 3.0.2 beta but when i open the market (after 'select o2 or ...' on market enabler) after a few second closed again. i thing don't work on 2.7 MoDaCo
Why is the file a html file?? shouldnt it be an app?
I'm just not getting how you install this!!
hint : try opening the html file in your favorite browser ?

I tried this but i still can not see the applications.
I installed the market enabler before i was rooting the phone. Can it be the reason. Do you advise me to uninstall market enabler and install again?
And can somebody can tell me how to change the setting.
I go to settings tab from the market enabler and click on German O2
Later go to the Actual tab and and press save current settings. And exit
Is that right?
What is the gsm.sim.operator.numeric in actual tab. There is a number...

it works for me
I set hack, kill market process then open market again! it really does work and if your phone is rebooting while trying to set hack, reinstall market enabler
What's the latest version?
I have Market Enabler installed on my phone, but I can't find an "about" tab telling me which version it is. But the .apk is called "MarketEnabler_v3-1.0.2-beta.apk".
Today I downloaded "MarketEnabler_v3.0.8.apk" from the official project page.
Which of these are actually the newest version?
And to you who didn't understand how to use it: the phone must be rooted, ME needs superuser access, and then you longpress on the network provider you want to fake.

[GUIDE] Get more market apps

This was stolen from Viewsonic G-Tab forums
Go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - Market - Clear CACHE - Force Stop
(For TnT/TnT Lite... Settings - Applications - System Applications)
Press back once - Google Services Framework - Clear DATA - Force Stop
Reboot device and after it boots back up wait a few minutes. Then open market and enjoy! I was never able to get mobile banking software, Google Maps or root explorer before doing this. Not sure if you have to do this after every reboot but it works!!!!

Edit: Sorry should have mentioned I tested this on NookieComb 4.13. I'm sure this would work on NookieFroyo...

That would be great, but I don't have an 'applications' link in the settings menu.
Use nook color tools

[Hack] Kindle Guide for Transformation to Android Tablet

This is a guide to transform your Kindle Fire 2 Generation into a full working android tablet (Android UI, Google APPS, Play Store, Widgetsssss etc.) . UPDATED 12/21/2012
That said. I have no ownership of any of the programs or files discussed. This is just stuff i gathered to make my Kindle Fire ROCKKKKK, Do this at your own risk, I am not responsible if you brick your device or void your warranty by doing any of this. Also please give to the developers that took of their time to create the programs and make your crappy reader into something awsome.
Please read complete article before you begin. Again I am not responsible if you brick your device or void your warranty by doing any of this. 2/2/2013
We have fully funtional roms for Kindle. Fire 2. I will not be posting any more posts since a full ROM experience is way better in my opinion. But for people that dont want to fully convert and for documentation I will leave the posts. Have fun!!!!
Change lockscreen ( Work around instating No Lock from android market and then instaling your favorite lockscreen from market thanks to tip from fmkilo), change search engine (I tried instaling google search to no luck, if some one can help please comment, some ideas where told, will try soon)
Procedure to transform Kindle Fire 2 Generation into a fuctional android tablet,
1. ADB enabled and Allow Unknown source APK and Amazon account registered
This is simple just go to your Kindle Eyelid and hit
(+)More...--> Security-->Enable ADB ON
and
(+)More...--> Device-->Allow Instalation of Applications ON
Install Amazon account as root may not let you create one
2. Root and Super User
In order to change the UI and install a few missing apk in the Kindle Fire system folder we need Super User and Root access.
Below is a link that will show you how to install root. It is ment for the Kindle 7 HD but works perfect on our Kindle Fire Second Generation ( I last used it on OS version 10.2.4 and worked)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35156970
3. Install UI, and Google Apps
Now that we have root access we need to place a few apk on the system/app folder of the Kindle Fire to change the UI and have fuctional Google apps.
For that we need to modify ES File Explorer settings
go to Settings--> Root Setings Check First 3 Boxes (Root Explorer, Up to Root, Mount File System)
Now is just simple we need to move a few apk to the system/app folder.
All Needed
Android UI
IMPOTANT Choose an Andoid UI. There are a lottttt of User Interfaces for android. Like APEX Luncher, Go lancher, Nova launcher ect. to choose. I will use APEX launcher which works great on the Kindle Fire but you can install the one you love, you can change it later by removing the apk form systems/app and placing a diferent one.
http://www.papktop.com/apex-launcher-1-3-5.html
Google APPS
We need to install a few of the googles apps for the google play and Gmail to work so please download all of the above.
Google services framework apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=889863&d=1328536031
Google Play store apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046533
Google youtube apk
http://www.androiddrawer.com/6750/download-youtube-4-1-23-app-apk/#.UM5sFm_oTl8
Google chrome apk
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1485473
Once you downloaded all of this apk simply paste them on your system/app folder and reboot the device.
When the device turns on again it will start updating. Unlock the device and will ask you which UI you prefer TO USE, choose APEX IMPORTANT I suggest that you test the UI first and then check the box to make this the defalt UI this can brick your device if the UI is not running Properly ( if you want to make the change permanent select the check box below, if not everytime you press the home button or restart will ask you to choose)
You will now see a familiar Android UI. Congratulations your Kindle Fire is not as crappy and has fully funtional google play, widgets and live wallpapers. :victory:
4.Prevent OS update, Loss of ROOT and all your Mod work
Every time your divice gets an update will automaticaly loose root. Thanks to crappy amazon these updates will get pushed and you cant stop them from the settings menu. Localy we can stop it with 2 options
A. Quick fix (will go into OTA update if Droidwall apk is turned off)
Localy we can stop them by placing a firewall like DroidWall and blocking the access ( i dont know which part to block to prevent it from updating so I just simply Check the apps I want use the internet)
Simply download DroidWall from the Google Play Store. The program is really simple just check which apps you want to let use internet, the rest leave unchecked.
B. Hard fix (will never go into OTA update unless you rename the file again) thanks to tip from fmkilo
To make change permanent go into the systems menu and rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip
5. Change Lookscreen
To change the lockscreen we need a few apk from the android market.
A. No Lock
B. Rom toolbox
C. Your favorite lookscreen ( I use Picture Password a copy of Windos 8 lockscreen)
Simply install Rom Toolbox, No lock, and lockscreen form market.
Open Rom toolbox and select App Manager find No Lock from the list and long press it. A menu will pop up, select "Convert to system app". Reboot device ( To skip this step you can also download No Lock apk from internet and place it on system/app)
Open No lock and hit enable, now you have no stock lockscreen, feel free to install your favorite lockscreen.
5. Fix Kindle Reader
This will delete kindle's original app for ever back up kindle app somewhere to restore
Go to system/app and save kindleforoter apk somewhere on your kindle and then delete it from system/app
Reboot device
Install Kindle Reader from Play Store
That is it. HAVE FUN
If you have any updates on this Tutorial please feel free to comment.
I suggest rom toolbox. After rooting and installing Google services framework, and the play store, open rom toolbox, select app manager, and then long press the framework and play store and select "system app".
Then, once that's done, gapps should work fine, all you have to do next is install your launcher(s) of choice and use rom toolbox to make them system apps as well, after that the home button will ask which launcher to use. If you set a launcher to always, you can use home switcher apps or reset defaults under your application settings.

To change the lock screen, use no lock from google play. It must be installed as a system app i'm sure if you're here then you at least know how to do that...
I blocked the ota updates by renaming /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip
Edit: if you go with nolock, you will need your own app for a replacement otherwise you just won't have a lock screen...

Thanks a lot. I Will add this to the tutorial
i got a few of my favourite Apps to work even though they could not be installed via playstore or simply dont work.
like Go launcher HD, battery mix plus, prehome or messagease, power toggle,…
just install the apk, convert to system app (like the two methods above, i use titanium backup or ES File) and reboot.
i suggest putting the most imporant apps (ES file, your preferred home switcher, a launcher,…) into your kindle favourite list - the star on the right bottom - to have quick access from everywhere
the feature i still miss, is the ability to usemultiple google calendars with a calendar app like jorte <- any hints?

I'm getting this same thing dude and it's really frickin pissin me off! I've posted the issue in like EVERY kindle fire 2 thread and no real help maaaan wth Can someone please give a explanation (in english) I mean I thank the person for making this guide it does help putting all the info on rooting the kf2 in one place its just that one little prob and I bet I'll be good to go
Hi guys, the guide is good and it works flawlessly. I'm UK kindle fire 2 last update.
I was actually able to get rid of the lock screen using widget locker lock screen which I had purchased a while back for a phone.
Put it inside system/app and started it. I'm using root helper option to ensure it kicks in.
Even when I restart the kindle, if you wait for it to boot completely, it will take over stock lock screen.
Awesome stuff. Not only the stock one is gone, but I get to also customize my own.
Beautiful widgets only worked after copying the apk from data/app into system/app
SEARCH
A workaround for search is to download google search from aptoide and widget locker can be set to start it.
Or to use a shortcut on desktop to an activity via the launcher and selecting google search.
Also moved the apk to the system/app but may no be necessary. Now to rename the certs file to prevent ota update...
[EDIT] I have managed to get it as the default search but not exactly sure how might have to do with the fact that i renamed the UnifiedSearch.apk after i installed google search and rebooted. Said something about upgrading the system but i have not found a way (yet) to revert back so do it at your own risk (and let me know if it is reversible lol).
As for the root bowser app, not necessary.
ES file explorer can do it all, just check the settings and allow root, browse root folder and mount system as writeable.
Feels great to finally have some control! So cool that you can start the normal kindle os via a shortcut icon on the desktop, or directly to kindle docs, where my own free books are
so now we know lockscreen can be removed and google search can be used - this is fun!!

hey pal, no sure what to tell ya, start from the beginning?
make sure you have the adb drivers on your computer and the right components to run some commands manually on adb - establish if its connecting
remember to have usb debugging enabled and allow Instalation of applications from unknown sources
change the order of the steps. Try Qemu first, then the RoottMANYDROID , and Qemu again
RootManyAndroid didnt work the first time, but it did the second time i tried it.
This guide should work - im pretty sure you have to use a tool to root the kidle HD, thats how i did it twice already.

I am starting to think Amazon has locked the device down.
Thanks

I am not a fully skilled developer, I just gattered bits and pieces and learn how to use them. From what I gather looks like you have a comunications issue. This is a Kindle Fire 2 forum I dont have a Kindle 7 HD to trouble shoot your issue. I what I recommend is to factory restore your Kindle Fire and reinstall any driver in you pc and retry. Apart from that I advise to keep trying Kindle 7 HD forum, Sorry

Sorry if I am a bit late on my response I work a full time job. If you have the same Issue I recommend the same treatment. Looks like a connection issue. Factory reset your Kindle Fire 2 Gen and reinstall kindle drivers.
What OS version are you running on your kindle?

nice Tut.
The only thing missing is a list of Amazon apps that can by deleted/moved without problems.
My Kindle have after root and install a new Launcher, over 20 Amazon apps.
I think most o then can by deleted/moved.
Flash player installation tutorial would be very nice..
There are plenty of other streaming sites except Youtube they need flash player.

Install it through aptoide. Look for it in play market.
Install it from the installer and you can delete it after, aptoide app will stay. It won't have many apps as you need to add repos, which happen automatically like this.
In aptoide, search for "Adobe flash"
Will return nothing but you have a button to search on the web
From that page, select Adobe flash and select install.
A file will be downloaded which if you select from the pull down status bar, will start the installation.
You will also be asked if you want to add the repository.

Thanks for all the great information. I followed your steps and was able to root the kindle fire second generation running the 10.2.4 update.
Only one problem, the Amazon kindle reader does not work if I start it from the Apex launcher (tried other launchers as well), but it still works through the stock launcher. Just wondering if anyone knew a workaround?
Thanks
1st off Thanks for the Guide
I was able to root my kindle that runs 10.2.4 but I am now stuck with no solution
My Kindle is brand spanking new and matter of fact it still has the plastic on it
This is a Christmas present for my brother.
So I never registered it with amazon in regards to buying anything from the app store.
After rooting it I tried to register with the Amazon store so I can install a file manager so I can install the Google apks
but Amazon will not let me register as I always get an error message when i try to log in.
I am assuming I cant log in because of the Root.
Is there any other way to get around this so I can install the apk's
Google services framework apk
Google Play store apk
Google youtube apk
Google chrome apk

This is an easy thing to fix. Go to system/app and cut move kindleforoter apk to another folder, and reboot your kindle fire 2 and install kindle app from the the Play Store. Have fun and Enjoy your reading

[APP][NST][NSTG][1.2.x]NTGAppsAttack - Google Apps Installer Addon For NookManager

Nook Touch Google Apps Attack aka NTGAppsAttack
Custom Menu Addon for NookManager
Google Apps Installer for Nook Simple Touch & Nook Simple Touch Glow firmware 1.2.0 , 1.2.1
Highlights
Improved GApps install that uses the setup wizard to register eliminating the YouTube / GMail dance.
Market update enabled so Market updates to latest version including in-app purchases.
New patching method that should allow quick releases for new firmware versions.
What apps does it install?
Installs Google apps to NST/NSTG running firmware 1.20 or 1.2.1 rooted with NookManager

Automatically updates to latest Market for NST/NSTG Android version. Includes in-app purchases.
GMail & GMail sync
Google Contacts sync
Google Calendar & Calendar sync

Google News & Weather
Calculator
What system files get modified?
/system/build.prop - set device fingerprint and turns on checkin
/data/system/packages.xml - clears signatures so new apps will install properly
/system/framework/framework.jar - patches to generate device id & phone type to allow market registration
/system/framework/services.jar - patch to start Backup Manager so setup wizard works
Getting ready to Install
Root your NST/NSTG using NookManager
Make a backup!!
Download NTGAppsAttack 0.5.0 for NookManager 0.5.0 (attached at end of post)
If you have a reader installed that uses Adobe DRM (Aldiko, Mantano, etc.) and you have authorized it with your Adobe ID you should deauthorize it before installing GApps and reauthorize it afterwards. If you don't the change to your Android Id that happens as part of the GApps install process will invalidate your Adobe authorization and force you to reauthorize. This counts against your device limit for Adobe authorizations (6 authorized devices). If you forget to deauthorize first and you run up against the limit you will need to contact Adobe to reset your device authorizations.
Do not disable BN Apps or reenable them before installing NTGAppsAttack
If you use Googles 2 step authorization, create and have ready an application specific password since when registering your Nook it won't redirect to the page where you add a generated pin from the Authenticator app.
Connect to wireless before powering off and installing NTGAppsAttack so that when you boot up after installing you'll be connected and ready to register your Nook.
** Warning **
I have tested this on my Nook Simple Touch. It works for me. I think it will work for you. But it might not. It might brick your Nook.
You must root your Nook using NookManager before installing NTGAppsAttack. Using NTGAppsAttack on a Nook rooted using any other method will probably break some stuff you like. Maybe even your Nook.
I haven't tested this on a Nook Simple Touch Glow. But the XDA forum talk is that it runs the same firmware as the Nook Simple Touch from 1.2.0 forward. NookManager roots a NSTG same as a NST and all seems rosy. So I assume NTGAppsAttack will work fine on a NSTG. But it might not.
Install at your own risk.
** Warning **
** Important **
Your version number of NTGappsAttack should match the version of NookManager you are using as NTGappsAttack replaces a file that is patched by NookManager. If your versions don't match things might not work when you're done. Updates to NTGappsAttack for the same version of NookManager will add a suffix to the NookManager version. For example the first NTGAppsAttack release for NookManger version 0.5.0 is NTGppsAttack version 0.5.0. An update to NTGappsAttack for NookManager 0.5.0 will be NTGppsAttack version 0.5.0.1 or 0.5.0.2, etc.

OK, I'm ready to Install
Make sure your NookManager and NTGAppsAttack versions match (see above).
Make sure your have rooted your Nook with NookManager and all is working correctly.
Deauthorize any readers you have installed and authorized with your Adobe ID.
Unzip the NTGAppsAttack zip file into the the root of your NookManager microSD card
Power off your Nook
Insert NookManager microSD card into your Nook
Power on your Nook and let NookManager load
From the main NookManager screen select More, then Custom, then Install NTGappsAttack
If all goes well, select Back, Back, Exit, eject your microSD card and let your Nook boot
** Important **
Once your Nook has booted you need to follow the next steps without delay. You don't need to rush but you need to move through them without interruption. Your Nook will be downloading an update to the Market while you are doing these steps. You need to be done before the update is installed. Otherwise when you open the Market you'll get a "server error" message. If that happens tap Cancel on the message and the Market will close. Go back to ReLaunch. Long press on the Market and select Uninstall and let it uninstall the update. When its done Market will still be there in ReLaunch. Immediately open the Market and pick up at step 14 again. And don't get interrupted this time. If the "server error" message persists try restoring your backup and try registering using a different GMail account.
Why didn't I preinstall the update? For some reason it doesn't work and won't communicate with the Google servers.
** Important **
Touch the Android to begin
Skip the tutorial
Tap Sign In
Enter your gmail account and password and tap Sign In
Leave location tracking boxes checked and tap Next
Uncheck Backup Settings to My Google Account box and tap Finish (You can try leaving backup checked but I haven't tested it as I use Titanium Backup)
Go back to ReLaunch and open the Market
Accept the Terms & Conditions
Tap on Apps
Tap on All applications
Tap on Top Free
Tap on one of the Apps and install it. Any one of them, it doesn't matter which, you can uninstall it later.
Exit the Market.
You're not quite done yet. Keep reading.
This gets the process of connecting your Nook with the Google Market servers going. At this point you are hooked up with Gmail, Contacts and Calendar syncing to your Nook. Try Gmail and Calendar out. You'll see your appointments in the Calendar and contacts in Gmail but the Contacts app isn't installed because it doesn't work on the NST/NSTG. Try Go Contacts EX once the Market is up and working. Now you need to take a break to let Google's servers get all cozy with your Nook before the Market will work properly. For me it usually takes less than an hour but it might take longer. As long as 24 hours+ has been reported for other GApps install methods. I think the installing of the free app speeds things up so I don't think you'll have to wait that long.
To see if the Market is ready:
Go to http://play.google.com - its most reliable to do this from your PC
Search for SearchMarket
Click on Install
Open the Send To dropdown. You should see a device called "phone". Thats your Nook. Select it and click Install. If it responds "the app will be downloaded to your device shortly" your Nook and Google have cozied up nicely. If you dont't see "phone", it won't let you select "phone" or gives you an "Oops we had trouble with this request" error when you click install you need to wait longer. Once it says it will be downloaded, back on your Nook open the Market again. It should look different. You've been automagically upgraded to the most current version of the Market app supported on our Nooks. It supports in-app purchases if you care. You should see a notification balloon in your status bar. Tap on it and the message should say SearchMarket has been installed. Now you can use SearchMarket on your Nook to find apps and install them (search in the Market app is broken). If you don't get the installed notification continue on.
Open the Market on your Nook.
Tap on My Apps.
Tap on SearchMarket to install it.
Missing and/or Broken Stuff
Market Search doesn't work - Use SearchMarket from the Market per above instructions
No Contacts app - try Go Contacts EX from the Market - default and iPhone themes are decent on our eInk displays
No Google Books - see this thread on Google Books[/URL]
No YouTube, Maps, etc. - download them from the Market
How to change sync settings - Go into Gmail, open the menu and tap on Add Account. Add your same Google account again and you'll get a screen that will let you select what you want synced. Don't worry, it won't really add the account twice.

For Developers:

I got the setup wizard to work with a patch to services.jar to start the Backup Manager. It was looking to populate its checkbox for backing up apps & data up to Google.
The patch is written as an awk script to eliminate problems with line number and baksmali label changes with firmware changes. I rewrote the patch to framework.jar as an awk script as well.
I had to pull the MarketUpdater.apk from a different gapps package to get a matched pair of vending.apk and MarketUpdater.apk signed with the same cert. Otherwise MarketUpdater would fail. I tried just using everything from the EPF30 package but it seemed a bit flaky in its communications with the Google servers. YMMV.
Cert mismatches may have been why I added a sed to delete the certs for uid.shared in packages.xml as well as the usual uid.system. After dozens of reinstalls I can't remember. It looks like now a different shared user id is added to packages.xml and the one the certs are removed from doesn't have any certs added to it. So maybe this isn't needed with my final selection of GApps apk's but it doesn't hurt either.
Reserved for OP.
Market is getting stuck on "starting download". Everything else works.
NSTGL
EDIT:
Re-enabling the B&N apps helped.
One of these apps must be important for the process.
I don't think its the B&N apps causing the Market to get stuck at Starting Download. The B&N use of some of the same underlying Android authentication and communication stuff may have triggered things to start up again. I don't have the B&N apps disabled and it happened to me once during testing. I have read about it happening on non-B&N devices as well. When it happened to me it was only for one app. I could download and install others. I used Titanium Backup to clear data for the Market app and it fixed the downloading for the problem app and it started working again.
I have updated the OP with this info.
Thanks, this is excellent! When I start Titanium Backup it complains that debug mode is not enabled - is there a way to do this?

Install NookColorTools.apk and turn debugging on in there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868366
USB debugging is turned on by the rooting process but the Android settings database isn't updated to reflect it so TiBu throws up that warning. I just ignore the message and I haven't had a problem with TiBu. If the message bugs you enough you could PM jeff_kz, the developer of NookManager, and ask him to set adb_enable to 1 in the system settings to get rid of it.
Now, my problem is this: I installed your GApps on my rooted NST, made sure to follow your directions, except I was too slow on steps 10 thru 17 and got the "server error" message when i tried to start up market (it went as far as the terms and conditions screen). I tried uninstalling/relaunching Market like you said in your guide, but still got the error message. I tried using Titanium backup to clear data for market, didnt work (same server error), and i tried uninstalling market with Ti Backup and then re-installing from the microsd card that had your GApps on it--this didnt work either (maybe this step was a mistake?). Other Gapps seem to work: gmail, weather, calendar, calc. I'm really at a loss as to what i should do, i would greatly appreciate some direction to what i could do next, or even where i could get more help if you dont feel like answering my question. i promise i'll give you internet cookies for helping me! maybe even real cookies! Pretty please...

Hmm.. That's a tough one. The server error is a problem that has affected a lot of people on a lot of different devices ever since the Google "upgrade" to Google Play. Its sounds like you did things right and uninstalling with TiBu and reinstalling from the NTGappsAttack package was a good idea - too bad it didn't work. There is a lot of voodoo out there on things that might work to fix it. Some things I've found you might try are:
Try a different wifi connection
Go into GMail and add a second GMail account
Use an app called Market Enabler to add a fake carrier id to your Nook (not sure if this is for phones only)
If none of that works I would restore to your backup from before you started and reinstall GApps.
When i tap on android, nothing happens. I cannot bypass it anyway. any ideas?
EDIT: SOLVED by enabling BN apps.
This is brilliant, working lovely.
Anyone with Googles 2 step authorisation, create and have ready a application specific password since it won't redirect to page where you add a generated pin from Authenticator app.

No problem, also might be good to mention have wifi connected when shutting down before running this, makes authenticating simpler if it auto connect to your wifi network.
Wonderful anyway, thanks very much for your effort, pleased to uninstall 1MobileMarket and use some of my paid apps.
Is anyone able to get Aldiko working after rooting with NookManager, then installing NTGappsattack? Aldiko doesn't seem to be in the Market, and attempts to do things like a Titanium restore from another device and downloading directly haven't worked.
This sounds excellent and I can't wait to try it.
However, I can't seem to find NookManager 0.5.0 anywhere. The version I used when I orginally rooted my NST was 0.4.1. Can anyone point me at 0.5.0?
thanks,Jeff

I bet it is a question?
You'd better make everything work propertly, then try if after disabling it is still ok, if so then no prob i guess, if not just enable them.
My question: is accountandsyncsettings.apk not used for gapps to work? It is disabled by NookManager.

I believe accountandsyncsettings.apk is only used to add new accounts and change sync settings. You can't invoke it directly on the Nook due to the B&N hacking of their authentication into the Android authentication framework and requires going through GMail to get to it. I would think that once GApps are setup disabling accountandsyncsettings.apk wouldn't hurt anything it would just require reenabling to add an account or change the sync settings.
I would worry more about BnAuthenticationService.apk as I'm not sure exactly how B&N hacked their authentication into Android and whether or not GApps would fail without it. It may depend on whether you've registered your device with B&N or not.
I'm pretty certain that NookManager disabling ContactsProvider.apk will break contacts syncing in GApps.
If you disable B&N apps after installing GApps and have a problem, reenable them then try editing the NookManager /scripts/disable_all_bn script and delete the lines that disable the above apk file and try disabling again.
