[Q] Problems loading library books onto rooted Nook Color - Nook Color General

Sorry if this has been discussed, but search seems to have been down for a couple of days now.
Recently I renewed my library card and so wanted to check out reading borrowed books on my rooted Nook Color.
My main computer is a desktop running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, which has Adobe Digital Editions successfully installed under WINE 1.3x. I can check books out from my library and then it downloads the .acsm file to my computer. Then, when I click on the .acsm file the book opens in ADE just fine. However, that's where I'm stuck.
When I plug my Nook Color into my computer via the USB cable, ADE never sees the Nook Color for me to authorize it. I'm also running Calibre, and when plugging the Nook Color in it sees the device just fine and I'm able to transfer non-DRM'd books to it. When trying to transfer the files through Calibre, Calibre immediately tells me there's an error and there's no software to read the file on that device (paraphrasing error msg).
Has anyone using Linux been able to successfully borrow books from their library and upload them to their rooted Nook Color?
Thanks!
Robert

I use Overdrive Media Console on both my Nook and my Nexus1. I have been able to check out DRM'ed epubs and audiobooks (MP3, but not WMA) from my library, download them into device via wifi (or 3G too for the Nexus).
Unfortunately there isn't a desktop Linux version of the OMC software (there is Windows and Mac), but you don't really need it. It even supports the automatic deletion when the lending period is up

Thanks for the reply. I did install OMC. However, wwhen I follow the download link on the browser page it takes me to another browser page with HTML-looking text on a white background. Am I doing something wrong, or is the software acting up?
Robert

The same thing happened to me yesterday. After several attempts in Dolphin, Opera, and native nook color browser, I was able to download my book using the latest version of firefox.

The first time I tried with OMC on Dolphin HD, I got that same HTML screen. I either moved the storage location to the SD card or just rebooted (not sure which or both), but that fixed it in Dolphin. YMMV

[Q] Nook app / ePub file / Magazine Subscriptions

I purchased a magazine subscription from the nook store and it wouldn't show in my nook library. I called BN support and they said that it was an ePub file (not a PDF) and it seems like my device doesn't support ePub files. All other nook purchases are showing up in the library. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app with no luck.
Does anyone know how to get ePub support on the device or a way to make this work?
Nook doesn't allow you to download and transfer the file from another device.

On the NOOK app I've noticed Epub files need to be side loaded which basically means manually copying them to the nook directory into my documents. Also, the nook gets a bit retarded at times and will crash anytime you try going into my documents, if this happens you need to go into settings -> applications -> nook and clear data
Not sure I understand what you are asking but Aldiko is a free reader that will do Epub files. It is in the market.

Thanks. I just went back through the order process and saw that it says it is only available on nook color. Probably wouldn't work with a sideload.
Are your tablets rooted or where did you find nook reader?
I installed the nook app and subscribed to a mag and it shows and I was able to open it.

Which title? Customer service said some would/wouldn't work. Some titles will say that they are only available on nook color.

Does anyone know how to sideload the cover art? I have a ton of epubs sideloaded and they work great just can't get the cover art to show.
...just bumping this to see if someone can give more detail on nook magazine subscriptions on the g tab. Almost all titles say that they are exclusive to the nook/nook color. My attempts have not been successful.
Please let me know the titles you have tried and how you got them to work. The step by step would be a useful reference for others considering the g tab as well.
Thanks!
epub files are just easier dealt with in fbreader. Available in market.
Not as flashy as Nook, but much more user-friendly.

I use Readers Hub with Zinio to read magazines. Go to Zinio.com and sign up and purchase subscriptions to the magazines you want and you can read them on your gTab.
Here is where you can get the apk files for these apps.
Force closes with the standard Zinio apk.
Use the fixed version for the GTab.

(5 months later...) The nook app has been updated to support magazine and newspaper subscriptions as well as user ePub files.
Yeah, works great for me! I'm loving being able to read magazines on this color display as apposed to the terrible magazine support on the standard Nook. A few bugs, but mostly going without a hitch.

[Q] Kobo Book reader

Enticed by the 1.8 Million books and claim of free books I installed the Kobo reader on my rooted NC.
The app loads and you can browse books in the catalog BUT when you try to open a free book or a preview of a book to purchase the app crashes out.
It seems to work fine on my Droid X so this seems to be a Nook-ism....I wonder if the screen size is an issue?
Anyone else tried this or had any luck?
thanks
Chris
I had a ereader that used kobo before we got the nook. I just downloaded the app so we could use the books we had already bought with them. I can see my books on the shelf, but it still says "waiting to download" and never does.. i hope somebody can help us with this.
Kobo
I had the same problem on my Rooted Nook Color.
Kobo loaded and then showed "waiting for download" on each of the books (I have about 65 or so).
I rebooted my Nook to make sure there was nothing hung; then I ran the program and let it sit for about an hour. When I cam back to check on it, it was just finishing the last of the books.
Now it works just fine, and new books download into it with any delay. I am not sure what the problem is when it first downloads your library; but I got tired of quitting the program and decided to let it run as long as it wanted to.
Good luck!
It downloaded my books and then mentioned they are working on the issue. I downloaded a preview and it opens and then immediatly crashes back to my library.
I did a reboot, log out log back in and remove and reinstall. Still have same issue.
I logged a support ticket to see what they say but I am guessing it could be related to the screen size OR it requiring a unique hardware ID i.e. phone number for account/licensing purposes.
If I hear back from Kobo will post anything of interest here.

Re: the downloads hanging, mine worked after I did a "clear local data" and re-inserted my microSD card. I'm guessing it stores books on the card.
I still can't open books though. Same error as above.
Update: The app still doesn't work, but if you connect your NookColor to your computer via USB, you can copy your Kobo books from Adobe's Digital Editions software. You will first need to go to your Kobo account on their website, download the book into Adobe Digital editions. Then connect your NookColor to your computer via USB. Once it is recognized, open Adobe Digital Editions. It should find your NookColor. Authorize the Nook, then you can drag and drop books from ADE into your NookColor's icon on the left. They work fine in the B&N ebook library. No pretty covers, though, at least on the ones I copied over.
Having this problem too after trying to read a book I bought at Borders.com. Any workaround to get Kobo to work or is the Adobe software trick still the way to go?

Wonky NC e-reader app on 2.2

I have a rooted NC 2.2 Froyo. Everything, by and large, works splendidly. Youtube, gmail, chat, etc all seamless.
My biggest problem is the nook e-reader app.
1. It won't sync
2. epub files i load to the "document" folder are erratic. Some show up, some don't and most won't even open.
eg. this morning i loaded 10 epub books into the folder. 3 appeared in "my files" and only one opened.
I tried clearing the cache, trying different folders, only loading the epub files without the image file...nadda.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since i bought my nook primarily for reading.
Oh, and when i try to open certain games i receive the message "Information about your device cannot be retrieved due to an unstable platform status. Please restart the application."
anyone? anyone?
FBReader
HI,
Not sure what your issue is, but I was reading books on NC SD card Froyo using
FBReader successfully. I also used Calibre Library to access my ebooks on PC,
served from Calibre (Open source ebook manager) (Doing same now on emmc version
of Cyanogenmod. (CM7/14)

Talks about a problem on Honeycomb version, perhaps it is also for Froyo Versions?
Good luck, I have been enjoying my NC a lot for ebook reading!

[Q] Anyone using "Calibre Library" on their Nook Touch?

Since I'm getting a Nook STR soon I just wanna find out if anyone successfully install the Calibre Library APK onto their STR? If yes does the stock nook reader able to pick it up?
My only aim is for the STR to have a way to access my Calibre Web contents and can search/download my ebooks over wireless connection rather than plugging usb.
I have installed Calibre Library on my Nook STR, and it works fine, but I'm using it with Cool Reader (I'm not a native english speaker and Cool Reader allows me to add a customised dictionary).
My guess is that you might make Calibre Library to work with stock library by pointing it to download your books into the stock reader's folder (which can be found by choosing "more" from within a book you've opened in the stock reader).
I hope you get to understand this last phrase
Thanks for the insight

[Q] Sideloading book help with Nook HD+

Hello,
I am having trouble sideloading books into my Nook HD+ 16GB. I previously owned a Nook Color and used Calibre to sideload my book library (~300 books in EPUB format) to it and it did it perfectly, with all books being read by my Nook Color. I assumed it would be done the same way with the Nook HD+ so here are the steps I took to do it:
- Connect my Nook HD+ to my PC using the supplied USB cable. (Device shows up as BNTV600 in My Computer and as a portable media player)
- Open up Calibre, it detects my Nook HD+ automatically and asks if I want it to manage the device, I click yes. My device and the SD card now show up in Calibre, the device as a black tablet icon and the SD card as an SD card icon.
- I go to my Calibre library and highlight all of my books (all of them contain metadata and covers for reference) and right click one then click "Send to Device>Send to Storage Card A" and after about 2 minutes all of my books have been transferred to my Nook HD+.
- I disconnect the cable and open my Books tab in my Library.
- The Nook HD+ shows all ~300 books in the library with their respective titles, authors, and covers, everything looks fine.
*This is where an issue arises. Up until this point everything seemed fine.*
- I open up a random book to see if it loads and I get this pop-up:
"Error Dialog
Sorry, cannot open this book."
- I try opening up any book and they will not open, all EPUB files giving me the same message.
- After I close that message, another pop-up comes up saying "Unfortunately, Reader has stopped."
- I open up the My Files tab in my Library app and navigate to my SD card. All of the books are stored in "SD Card>Books." I try opening one up from there and they still give me the same message,
*At this point I am assuming the books are in the wrong path on my SD card since Calibre previously synced my books to the Nook Color in "SD Card>My Files>Books" indstead of "SD Card>Books." *
- I change the sync location in Calibre to this and remove all books from my device then re-sync so that they get the new path.
- After resyncing, I try opening one of the books again (All ~300 books showed up in my library again with all covers/data) yet it gives me the same error dialog.
- Now I think it might be that the books got corrupted, so I navigated to the SD Card in My Computer and opened one of the books using Sigil (An EPUB editing software) and it loads fine.
- After that I assume it might be my SD card so I send a book to my internal storage to try reading it yet get the same error dialog again.
Can someone help me with this issue? Here's a TLDR for anyone who doesn't want to read:
*Sent book library to Nook HD+ sd card as well as internal storage in Calibre
*Nook doesn't read them and gives me a "Sorry, cannot open this book" error.
I'm really stumped and can't get the Nook to read the EPUB files. I know it isn't the books because they are all retail EPUBs purchased online so that I can sync them to multiple devices without any DRM hassles. My other Nook Color and tablet read them fine, but my Nook HD+ will not open the books. Has anyone else had any problems with sideloaded books?
I really hope someone can help me sort this out and I look forward to a reply!
Chris
What happens if you sideload one without Calibre? I don't know why Calibre would be the problem. I only ask because I sideloaded books with DRM to /sdcard/My Files/Books by drag and dropping via Windows Explorer and had no troubles opening them.

Sometimes Calibre will modify a file when it downloads depending on what device and what preferences you have set in Calibre. So sideloading may leave the files intact.

I am seeing this error as well. I am using FBReader to sideload my books but I see two different errors:
I also see this on the Nook Touch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...files for me.
Thanks for any guidance.
