SMS? - Xoom Themes and Apps

So I got Handcent SMS onto my XOOM and everything works fine, till I got to send a message and it says no service available. I have full 3G service. Anybody able to tell me what the deal is? Or is it because verizon is blocking the texts or something? Or anyway other way to get SMS other than waiting forever for google voice.

Xoom doesn't support SMS. Who knows why, but it doesn't.

I have used yahoo to send sms text to cell phones. Only thing that suck is you have to hit the refresh button on the yahoo page the see if they have responded.

My Xoom's has not arrived yet, but as soon as it does I plan on checking out HeyWire (they promise free worldwide texting via data).
Not enough post to actually post a link so:
hteeteeps://market.android.com/details?id=com.mediafriends.chime&feature=search_result

Heywire isn't compatible with the Xoom...at least that what it told me beforeI downloaded the app.

the yahoo thing seems like it would get annoying after a while. I don't see why google can't update google voice for the xoom. Almost any other app I have says nothing about honeycomb support and it works lol. Oh well i guess.

Have you guys tried Textem.net? It lets you txt anyone and the response comes back to the website or your email....Its free too

Someone found textfree in another thread. It works pretty good. Just install it and make an account.

[Q] Google Voice?

I can't find Google Voice...I find that odd. Am I misiing something?
Nah man I can't find it either I think hopefully theyll try to make an optimized version, regardless, I'm a little upset
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
If you try to install it via market.android.com, it says it's an invalid device.
not compatible yet. Should have an update soon. I have found other apps like logmin ignition don't work either. Sure updates will roll out soon
anyone have an idea on timing for google voice? really would love to be able to make a voice call and get sms.
google translate isn't compatible either...not sure why. seems like it should be able to run the phone version just fine.
I suspect that voice calls will not work even when/if we get google voice app in here. Unless google decides to push gtalk direct dialing like on the browser gmail.

I don't think they'll let you make calls from the xoom or any tablet, I think the most they'll do is to let us send text messages over the xoom, just because this is a tablet not a phone, but then you never know...
you already can with skype
Something I thought about was just using the browser to access the google voice webpage, which you can use to text message as well. It does work better when you change the browser userstring to desktop instead of android.
i tried a little while ago to run the latest version and got fc right off the bat. It may be as simple as a slight APK mod. Ill try a few things and report back.
Did you get it working
By using Fring VoIP, SIPGate, and Google Voice I can make VoIP calls with my Xoom. Once you set up Fring with SIPGate, add your SIPGate number to GV. Go to the GV website on your Xoom, lookup a contact can call. It will forward the call to your SIPGate number and ring on the Xoom through Fring. Works great.
Still waiting for an official GV app though.
I've been in touch with team at Google. At first, I was given the following response:
Thanks for your note. At this time, Google Voice is not compatible with the Motorola Xoom, because the Xoom doesn't have the required telephone features.

After replying that I didn't exactly need the telephone features, but rather the SMS and voicemail checking features, I got this back:
At this time, it's not possible to use the Google Voice app on the Xoom, but I will definitely share your feedback with the Google Voice team.

doesn't csipsimple use honeycombs native phone capabilities? If so why can't GV?
Lacking that what about after the 4g upgrade? Will it not have a radio then technically?
I believe the reason there isn't telephone capabilities is that Google isn't interested in creating a full-fledged VoIP solution just yet. You can see they're testing the waters with the VoIP calling in Gmail, but if they were truly dedicated to the concept, they would have added VoIP capabilities to the standard Android app or released SIP information. After all, Gingerbread and the Nexus S have the capabilities to run something like that.

This is a deal breaker for me on the xoom/Honeycomb. iPad has official GVoice app that does sms, missed calls, & voicemail and it has the talkatone app that does GVoice voip calls. You can put away your phone while using your tablet and not miss anything.
If your GV number is set to ring gmail/gtalk will a the gtalk app ring on a xoom?

Instead of Fring I am now using SIPDroid and it works great. Even tethering from my Incredible.
It looks like I'm going to have to put off the Xoom until more features are enabled.

I'm sure google has some clueless employees too, and given that they developed a GV app for the iPad, which also lacks telephone functionality, I'm betting that that's all this is....one of Google's few clueless.

ClockworkMod DesktopSMS: Sending and receiving texts from your XOOM (and desktop)

DesktopSMS forwards all your incoming SMS on your *Android Phone* to your Gmail to GTalk.
You can then reply to the chat request or email, and the response will be sent back from your phone as a text message. This is very similar to Google Voice, except you won't need a new number or anything annoying like that!
http://app.net/desktopsms
Installation:
1) Install DesktopSMS on your ANDROID PHONE. (Not onto your XOOM)
2) Login to Desktop SMS on your ANDROID ****PHONE****.
3) Install a Chat client like Google Talk (which may already be on your XOOM) onto your XOOM or desktop PC.
4) Receive a text. Watch as your text gets converted to an email and google chat message
5) Respond!
So, once again, this app is only installed on your phone. Then just install your favorite IM client on your desktop and tablet, and the rest will work magically!
You do not need to install this on both your phone and tablet like other apps. You do not need to be on the same network like other apps. This all works by magic (my servers).
Let me know what you think. This is in a free beta right now, so be prepared for some bugs! I'd love to hear your feedback.
Wrote you a PM
well, I don't have a smart phone so thats a problem.
I, like many others, have ditched their smartphomes and activated their xooms. I now only have a dummy phone. I didn't see a need in paying for two data plans because I ws rarey using my phone. Now I use it to talk and text.... even though I wish it was only to talk.
I am waiting for the day that I can SMS on my Xoom using my current phone number. Guess I'll jabe to keep waiting. lol
Works awesome...just had a conversation with myself, through gtalk. Hahaha havnt tried it with my xoom yet. But im pretty sure it will work just fine. Very good job
It looks great but I cannot seem to get it to work yet, Mr. Koush. I have it signed it with push notifications successfully on my gmail account on my OG Droid. I can do the test message from within the app and it pops up on my phone like always, but other than that it does nothing on my Xoom, or on anything else for that matter. It seems almost like the push notifications are not even being sent out.
EDIT: I found out what the problem was. I had the default messaging app totally disabled, as I am using Handcent SMS as a complete replacement to the default one. I would like to use Handcent SMS instead of the default one. I know its beta and I cannot wait for updates!

Is there a way to make the contact name show up or will we need to add these email addresses to our contacts? Thanks and awesome job!

It looks like after you receive your first text from that person after you accepted the "chat invite" on your Gtalk account it syncs up with your current contact list automatically. It shows the phone number on the left side of the screen under your gmail account, but in the chat window it shows that contacts name in parenthesis.
This ofcourse is for if you are using the Xoom with Gtalk, such as myself. I haven't tried anything else yet.
Could it be that the contacts NAME will be in the gtalk LIST instead of phonenumber ?
OK, being a bit thick here.
I'm using GoSMS Pro, but as far as I know, the default messaging app is still active, just without any notifications... does this make a difference?
Not currently receiving any notifications in email or g-talk... :/

*edit* update took care of it, never mind.
@Koush
I am having an issue getting the app to try it out. When I tell the system to send me a link, it does, but it sends me a link for the link request page again. It does not send me a link to the actual app.
EDIT: Nevermind. I figured it out. Shouldn't browse until I had my coffee.

Is it possible that your push servers are blocked in China?
I can correctly Login with Google Account, but get an error on 'registering with push server....' (takes long and eventually times out)
Error message: "Login failed. Please check your password. If the error persists, please send a log to the developer"
here is a log... maybe it helps analyze why i can't connect with the push servers...
Ok, it's just updated, and when I go to send a test SMS, it brings up
The application GoSMS was found installed. If you do not recieve a text message, please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings.

So that's cool, then I send the test. GoSMS then pops up the text, as it always does.
However, it still doesn't appear to be sending me an email.
When it says "please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings", does it mean the default Messaging app?
I've tested by disabling the taskbar notification for GoSMS and re-enabling it for the default Messaging app, but even then, there is no sound nor visual cue that an SMS has arrived... is this why it's not working? Has GoSMS broken my default messaging app?

AT&T Messaging... like GV but from AT&T

http://www.att.com/shop/apps/att-messages.jsp?source=IAMS2500000000ZCU#fbid=2j54IbKcpyR
Its essentially just like Google Voice but uses your own AT&T number with voicemail, texting, mms, and missed call notifications.
Just loaded it... be weary, looks like it take some time to sync and begin... its not as quick as GV either
do you see any obvious advantages? other than being able to use your own number
EDIT: installed it, nice app. i like it
Backup and review of all messages on the cloud. Slightly safer than Google.

tried it right now and here is my thoughts on it
Pros: You are able to text from your computer using YOUR number and not the number that google has given you. Also if you dont have a signel on your phone you are still able to text from your computer, this also goes if you dont have your phone with you but you are still at a computer. Its an all in one system were you can get your text and voicemail in one place
cons: For some reason i cant get the website to load my messages but that could be just me, at this moment you cant disable notifications, not that much customization
i feel that it can be a great app given more time to improve on it but for right now i installed it tried it and uninstalled it because google voice is still better
Took a couple hours but it started working super smoothly. I don't like how it handles missed calls so now I use the messaging app for texts and what not and Google voice for voicemail.
Sometimes tthe messages don't sync but a force kill and app restart fixes it.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
does this require a texting plan? currently I block all texts to and from my phone and just use GV, does this use data only for texts? I'm guessing AT&T wouldn't be that stupid...
it requires data and text but the data doesnt count unless you have a 4g plan (for now). just texts at some point. says so in the fine print.

after you sync, give it a couple hours to settle (youll know when you only get notifications for the att app and not from the Android Messaging app).
Does this cost money to use like at&t navigator, at&t music, etc?

Great timing for this app. I was debating purchasing a DeskSMS license but this is a good alternative.
this app is weird. i was kind of hoping for an app to sit in my sys tray so that i could see my texts from there and reply, like any other instant messaging app. This app requires you to log in to a clunky website to send and receive texts. the notifier app only tells you that you have messages.
It is clunky. Also expired my VM. ATT guy had no idea about the app or what it does and couldn't answer why the VM was expired. Seems that this app sets up another VM or sorts. Not crazy about the notifications either as they don;t seem to update when on the conversation...I dunno. Deleted it per the ATT service rep...funny really as one section has no idea what the other is doing.
I just get a message that says it can't complete the setup and I should contact AT&T support...
After you install the app and activate the service, this will change your voicemail retrieval number. If you used to call from another line to check your VM, you will need to call a different number from now on. Of course you also get Visual VM now.
I coud not access my mailbox, I was getting a prompt saying that my mailbox was not found, until I realized about this change. I fixed it by updating the call forwarding setting, under Android settings > call settings.
Tried it and don't like it. "Messages" app seems to take up a lot of RAM as well as battery. Made my phone a little laggy at times as well. How do I get my OLD voicemail back? I hate calling and having to enter my PIN # every single time to check messages. I used to be able to just click the notification icon and it'd go right through. Any help would be appreciated.
I had to call ATT to have the VM reset. It turned in to an hour long process with the ATT guy calling me back 3 times.
Edit..I take that back PIN still isn't working.
the app tells you that your voicemail will change. Its not a surprise by any means. If you want to change back your voicemail just ask that the give you basic voicemail. Takes two minutes. Just don't forget to set your greeting.

Text Messaging?

Has there been any way of sending and receiving texts with the TouchPad through bluetooth? I know webOS can do it with the Pre 3 and the Veer but not with any other phone. How about Android? Any apps or anything?

There is also TextPlus. Basically this app uses a fake phone number out in the world. People can text to that number and you will get it in your TP. You can also send texts out using it and take care of attachments.
There are lots of apps that imitate it, but nothing (other than GVoice that I've seen) that can allow you to use your own phone number to do it. Unless your carrier allows a web-access type thing, like Rogers did with their OneNumber that they just started. But again, that's web, not an actual app.
I reco GV, but then again, I'm Canadian, and I like being able to text anywhere from it.
I went ahead and downloaded the app DeskSMS on my phone. I linked it to my google account and text messages are forwarded to google talk on CM9 and the default Messaging app in webOS. I can reply straight from my tablet. On top of that, google chrome has an extension on the desktop version that allows you to do the same thing and send/receive texts from the browser. Its pretty cool. The best part is is that it acts like a normal text message so it doesnt show the people I'm texting a different number or require them to be logged into google talk or anything.

How to use OKGN with GV and Exchange?

So I learned that OK Google Now will only send and read texts and emails through the native messaging and gmail apps, respectively. The problem, as noted in another thread, was that I use Google Voice and Exchange for those purposes, which takes some of the WOW out of the Moto X.
I'm now looking for a work-around.
Does anyone know of a way to route my GV texts (I don't have a texting plan on AT&T and have texting blocked) and my Exchange emails through the native messaging and gmail apps?
BTW, I tried selecting Receive Texts Through the Messaging App in the GV Settings--Sync and Notification, but it didn't seem to work.
I would appreciate any ideas on this.
Thanks in advance.
hmm... i think i catch on to what you're trying to do... but as of date, i think Sprint is the only carrier with FULL GV integration.
sorry.. kinda SOL on that one since you blocked SMS.
but if SMS was active through your ATT account, i currently am using 8sms to send/receive texts and OKGN works fully well with it.

I guess I am SOL for now. Though I'm hopeful one of the xda wizards will come up with something.
