[Q] Is there a way to add the 3x4 portrait samsung keyboard? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There,
I've tried searching all over and cannot find anything so please forgive me if I'm asking something that has been asked before...
I am looking at all the wonderful custom roms out there for the Captivate but it seems that some of them do not have the classic Samsung Keyboard. I'm very fond of inputting text via the old school 3x4 portrait style with predictive texting and notice that some of the roms do not have the Samsung Keyboard, which then pretty much rules out that rom for me.
So I was wondering if there is a way to add the 3x4 portrait samsung keyboard to a rom somehow if it wasn't originally built/packaged with it?

Yes, there is definitely a way to do that. It will involve rooting your phone, and finding the .apk of the keyboard into a certain folder with 'Root Explorer'.
I'll see if I can find the Samsung Keyboard .apk for you, and I suggest you getting Root Explorer (or similar) for the time being.

romkitchen.org create an update.zip NOT a full rom. they have the samsung keyboard available! and much more!

Very awesome site! But I must ask... I can't seem to find the Samsung Keyboard there though... I can only see "Gingerbread Keyboard" under the Keyboards section...

Wow!!! That is AWESOME!!!
I'm still a noob so pardon if I ask some potentially obvious questions... *bows head in shame*
I am getting Root Explorer and have not used it before tho have indeed rooted my phone and flashed an existing rom created by others (currently using Serendipity 5.12)
Would this Rom Kitchen method be a simple addition to a current rom via Clock Work Recovery - Reboot into recovery mode - install zip from SD Card type of thing? Or would I have to go into the folder and replace the different files with whatever is generated and rename the file, also as an addition/alteration to a current Rom that I was using?
Or would you basically be generating your own custom Rom altogether with this Rom Kitchen by starting from scratch and selecting each part of the rom yourself like the Base Rom then CSC then Kernel then Modem then Apps Etc and then doing a master clear and flashing this as a brand new rom?
And if the generated file is essentially a brand new Rom altogether, would it be possible if I just generate one with the desired "additions" that I was looking for, open that up, save/copy the additions I wanted and then just customize an existing Rom I really like by swapping out or adding those additions in the appropriate folder?

Thank you to all in advance by the way!!!! I really appreciate the help!!!

the Samsung Keyboards (and all the rest of the keyboards) are under the "Apps" tab area? But I don't know what the difference is between the Samsung Stock JPY and JS3 keyboards? Do both have the portait 3x4?

Oh yeah, I see it now. Weird, I could only see Gingerbread Keyboard before! (Maybe the page didn't load properly).
They don't differ too much, you should be fine with JS3!

That's strange! You're Right!! If you choose "update.zip" as the Base Rom choice (which I assume is just adding onto your existing Rom after playing with this site more) then the Samsung Keyboard Does Disappear from the App Tab Choices!!!

Yeah, I just realised that as well... I might hunt around for you and find the Keyboard's .apk right now
It'll be a different set of instructions, but it won't be "too" hard. Basically the option via my first post in this thread.

If you were to install Serendipity, you could use this:
http://serendipityrom.weebly.com/add-ons.html
The Samsung Keyboard is there.

Yeah... for now I'm just going to use the Serendipity Rom..... Thanks!

HTC_IME mod keyboard

Hey guys, I'm currently running CM6 rom and I tried to install the HTC_IME MOD keyboard with no luck. I was actually able to install it but when I select it as the input method the keyboard never appears on the screen. Has anyone gotten this to work on their Aria successfully? I tried it on both CM6 and Attn1 liberated rom. I installed swype and that works fine, but I really would prefer the HTC keyboard.

Here's a link to the HTC_IME thread on the forums. I've tried the low and high res versions and neither worked. They install fine, I go into settings and enable, then choose it as the input method, no problem. But the keyboard never pops up.

no offense but we arent looking for a different language we are looking at the keyboard interface
i also suspect that this was designed for a different device, a higher resolution device and the low resolution versions dont support froyo
Have you tried this version? h ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7915283&postcount=2551

works great i dont seem to have the issue with a glitch on the speak now...but it does work great...also im running cm6 6.0.2 with dumfuq's oc kernel 825...wich is great btw
I got this to work...once. Not sure what I did right, but I'd like to do it again. I was running CM6.1 and tried it many times. I think the only time I got it to work may have been when I chose lo res. I shall reattempt after I resolve a few other issues. I will do my best to report back if there is success.
Use the Low Resolution. I used a PC for the download and extraction. All you need is the apk that comes from the extract. Send the apk to your phone using any means (e-mail, usb connect). Use a file explorer such as Astro to install the apk. After installing the apk, go to Menu>Settings>Language & keyboard and check next to HTC_IME. (Notice there is a settings link - quite good). Back out to the home screen and select an app that would need text input. Long press on the text field, then select Input method. Select HTC_IME mod.
If you use the gimpsta ( http://www.gimpsta.com/themerlo/) skinner, use the lowres. When you want to change skins, just do the same install you did earlier with one tricky exception. They are all labeled the same, no matter what you name each skin's apk. When you locate the new skin in your explorer and try to install the apk, it will not give you an install option, but an uninstall option. Go with the uninstall, then when you return to the file explorer, reattempt install. Follow through with the subsequent steps to activate the input method, just like your original install of this custom keyboard.
Hope this helps. I was almost obsessed with making this work, because I had seen it work once. Now we just wait for gimpsta to give us low res users more options like custom keys, symbols and spacebar inlays.
Yeah,
1. You have to enable it in the menu.
2. You do a long check on a type-box.
3. choose input method, and then you can use HTC_IME mod.
4.??
5. Profit!
I'm having trouble getting this to work. I tried both hi-res links and the 1.6 lo res. the hi-res had nothing show up when a keyboard was needed (the standard android keyboard disapeared and was not replaced). the lo-res force closed.
i wiped all data/caches before installing CM6.1
Does anybody know how to make HTC_IME to show the character "ñ" on the keyboard? Even though I only marked spanish as my language it just won't show. It should be next to the "L"
Try pressing and hold or slide up and should show it.

I did it! It was on the "keyboard language" section. It's weird that I didn't notice that before. I was choosing my language on the "Language Selection" area. Thank you for for you answer

pashinator/flyboyovyick Custom Series: What would you like to see in our next rom?

I have teamed up with pashinator to bring you the roms you want.
Looking for ideas of what to put in our next two roms
The first in the series was Custom Clean
They will be called:
Custom Everyday
Custom Performance
We will start with the Custom Everyday.
SO!!! What do you do on a daily basis and what would you like to do on a daily basis with your phone?
Things to include:
Gingerbread themes and keyboard
arc video editor
black status bar
Things to learn:
editing framework-res.apk
general customsiing
making custom bootanimation.zip
We are not going to include app2sd because it is too much messing about and can sometimes be dangerous. Please install it yourself or use Openswift FroYo.
Make it clean i can install my daily basis apps whenever i want Simple.
A working Metamorph device would be enuff for me

I agree, clean and basic is good
Working App2sd
add more locale
It would be great if the rom supports more locale. (traditional and simplified chinese)
So for the person that wants a gingerbread theme, I can do that. ATM I am using the gingerbread keyboard.
Not sure about metamorph because I can't get it to work either
I will try the app2sd but currently I have failed twice at setting it up. So it might be a 2.2 rom, as that has it built in.
Anymore suggestions?
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
Gingerbread theme it might be good, 2.2 with camera and blue working, i'm new, i don't knoe if it's simple or difficult but if u want, i will help u, i'm just seeing some xda threads for making rom, but i don't undesrstand a lot.
Also NEW Gmail/Market/Maps/Youtube Apps would be cool ! And Black theme would be preferable something like Galaxy S have. But with eclair Drawer and Gingerbread icons And Built in Root rights and busybox installed. THAT WOULD BE PERFECT ROM !
Apps2sd working would be biggest plus for me
pleas this is vanilla eclair ROM by arekl1988r v.1 and v.2
h*tp://forum.android.com.pl/f200/rom-vanilla-eclair-rom-37914/
built aps2sd on ext2 partiton
this ROM is maximum slim.
Sorry for my english. I write by translator
Fastboot and quick recovery included in the package.....its a pain to install otherwise.
Why don't you write to quarx and ankuch and help them with developing OpenSwift faster
I'd like to have the original Arc Video Editor from the official LG firmware, its pretty awesome!!!
psfreedom support would be legendary.
seeming as though i am helpin out i need to highlight something.
me and flyboyovyick are just adding and removing apps to make a original rom better
until we do some learning.
when we have learnt i would like to put the following:
black status bar
better looking battery bar
and a slick finish
but now i would like to inform flyboyovyick that i have bricked my phone and will just be telling him what i suggest to put in rom

[Q] Is it possible to change the lockscreen on 2.1?

Just as the title says... I'm running a rooted stock ROM with sideloading enabled and was wondering if there was a way to change the lockscreen. I saw a couple floating around but they look like they required specific ROMs or 2.2 installed.

I doubt it. You could try fiddling around with the framework but I believe different lockscreens come from specific roms.

It depends on the lockscreen. I know you can get the AOSP lockscreen for 2.1. If you want the glass lockscreen from one of the other SGS phones you would have to see about it. I have seen an app that was a lockscreen switcher, but I took a quick look in the market and didn't recognize which name it would have been. I attached the android.policy.odex for the AOSP 2.1 lockscreen.
Hey flashman2002,
Could you explain how to use that file?
Thanks
Would I run that .zip as a normal update.zip file?
One app (that costs unfort) that will do this is Widget Locker. It isn't 100% bug free though and your results may vary.
I know Design Gears had a stock lock screen posted on his site at one time for 2.1 ROMS but I dunno if it's there any more.
You would unzip the file I put up. You could the use a file manager like root explorer or astronomical and move the file to its proper place. Back up the original android.policy.odex incase you need it.
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.

[Q] Tool/Mod for combining widget selection

I used to be on darky's rom and just flashed seearms rom (for several reasons)
In darky's rom when you want to add widgets to the homescreen, the several widget option for the same app used to be combined together. I know there is an app/tool for this, but can't seem to find it now. Please point me in the right direction

Hi,
What do you mean by "the several widget option for the same app used to be combined together"?
Id like to help but I dont think I understand what you mean...
I know what your talking about.
Search here on xda for 'App Widget Picker' - put it in /system/app with root explorer. No reboot necessary.
Actually, screw it. File is attached haha.
Rename it to appwidgetpicker.apk.
Thanks.. this makes selecting widgets so much easier!!

[Q] Please assist on keyboard mod

Over the past week I have been looking for assistance on having a keyboard I like modded to work with the theme I'm using.
Specs
ROM: Serendipity v6.3 - Theme: ZeuBugTheme (I9000 theme) JS based - Keyboard in question extracted from: Erebos (JPX/U/Y/JS3/JS5/JS7/JS8)
The keyboard is a .apk. I have tried the following to no avail, constantly getting the "Force Close" warning. File name gbkb.apk.
1) Dropping directly into System>app
2) Rename to libjni_latinime.so (not sure if I did it right, but didn't work)
I tried a few other things, things I don't remember that went terribly wrong!
So I ask for help understanding how to make something like this work with my setup.
Interestingly enough, they also have a dialer which I was easily able to replace the DialerTabActivity.apk and have the dialer work. So why not the keyboard?
Pleas ask questions I would truly like to rectify this.
Thanks, Tomween1

you need the gbkb.apk and the matching .so. you dont just rename anything.
drop the apk into /system/app and the .so that is included with the theme into /system/lib
thats it. you dont have to modify anything

OK, this too was one of my questioning areas (earlier in my attempts). Not sure what the so file is that I should use.
Also can these items be inserted into a cwm and be flashed? Not that I will 9don't know how yet), just a need to know
