Poor call quality? - LG Optimus 2x

I've had my 2X for a couple of days now, and I must say the call quality is quite poor. I don't remember struggling to hear the other person speaking on my Nexus One. The sound is kinda muffled and low pitched.
Anyone else who wants to share their experiences on this matter?

Same on my device.

Same here, any ideas if it's the hardware or if it's a setting that can be tweaked?

Hi mine is interfering with it‘s own speaker, but only when it‘s on 2g.
Do more people have this problem?
note when you use the built in speaker on hands free the interference is gone
seems the speaker near the camera is not shielded enough?

Dunno yet.
What radio version do you guys have? Mine is version 1035.21_20110223.

Works fine here in every department better as my old trusty Desire...
Just an amazing phone
Same radio which works great...

Same radio version here. is the radio version upgradeable?

Strange.
I have seen reports of phones using a later version, but i don't know if we can upgrade to that at this time.

My Danish one that has the older radio sounds like playback is an old zx spectrum 1bit sample as soon as the person in the other end is speaking loud
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App

Seems like this is indeed a problem for many of us.
Can someone of you who uses the newer radio (1035.21_20110302) tell us if you are suffering from the same issues?
Maybe someone can make a dump of the newer radio that we can flash when Paul from MoDaCo gets his CWM working.

Mine (also danish) sounds fine, but it would be nice to be able to turn up the volume a little more.

What build version do you have?

Well don't have the issue to works fine here hence better as my Desire lol

Upgraded from a HTC Hero and I must say the call quality is lower on the Optimus 2X with my current radio at least (1035.21_20110223). People here me better though - so the microphone is better... Would be glad if a radio flash would fix it; official or unofficial.

the sound quality on mine is horrifying .. a little wind and i have absolutely no clue what the person on the other end is saying. my Desire was alot better than this
Android: 2.2.2 FRG83G
Radio: 1035.21_20110223
LGE: LGP990-V10a

My LG 2x is spot on and I will dare to say that the audio and call quality is at least substatially better then it was on my Desire

Also have some inn call audio problems. Even if I have volume on lowest setting, it is a little to loud and I hear some scratching sounds.
No problem when I use speakerphone or headset.
Phone bought in Norway.

Yes, even on lowest volume it's sometimes too loud in my opinion.
Would be an improvement to be able to make lower volume possible.

Audio Mod for the Nexus One?

Is there a mod for the nexus one that actually works for increasing the volume? I'm sick of having the superior phone but the lowest volume. I can hear these flip phones alerts or playing music over industrial fans and I can hardly hear my own phone when it's quiet.
right this sucks!!! please anyone knows of any kind to increase the volume really??
as in speaker wise not by ear??
We just need to be careful with how much increase we add. People will go and start blowing up their speakers
The music player Lithium has a volume increaser, but only works whilst playing music
Many of the custom kernels you can install will include the Audio Boost hack. Take a look at Wildmonk, pershoot or intersectraven's kernels.
Umm cyanogen ROM like doubles call volume with the hack and you can't turn it up past 50% or it blows your ear hole off. Have you never tried the cyan hack? It solves this issue long ago.
I have his rom. And Froyo. I still find it very hard to hear anything on my phone. My phone is a freaking Nexus One. Why is the volume so damn low? This is embarrassing. If I need something extra then please tell me what I need to do cause enough is enough. The phone ringing is so hard to hear I damn near miss calls. Meanwhile a flip phone boost mobile outranks my phone with it's volume? Tell me someone is kidding?
mine has always been quite loud, almost annoying, with notifications, when its stock or with cyanogen
maybe try amping up the volume of the ringtone file or notification with an audio program like audacity?
i also got the same problem. the volume is too low. a lot of times i missed the notification because i can't hear it. even in quiet room.
and i stumbled into this web. androidaudiohacks.com
the guy provided an apps to crank up the volume. but it still won't work on nexus one. the guy said it's WIP though. maybe someone can take a look at that web and figured a way to do it on nexus one.
If my phone is in my pocket, I simply do not hear it ring or notify no matter how loud i have it set, period. The sound is pretty good quality-wise but i can only watch a movie with ear buds or if its absolutely silent in the room.
I tried showing off my phone to a friend, he really like the picture but didnt understand the point since we couldnt hear the damn thing!!! He said he'll stick with his stupid iphone, and based on the piss poor performance he witnessed i honestly cant blame him. It is odd that the stock volume made it through testing the way it is, it actually makes me question whether or not the finished product did in fact get tested...of course i have the exact same problem with my $2000 vaio laptop. It plays blu-ray dvd's beautifully you just cant hear anything. So im not all that upset at htc in particular, perhaps there is validity to the blowing speakers concern....

I mean on cyan 508 the volume is insanely loud. Like 60% and the speaker distorts. Maybe this was cyan 507 I'm thinking cause I remember reading him say it was too loud so he was gonna reduce it a little.
But I mean the hack was like purposely over the top loud, like silly loud.
People might not realize that if they're using the original protective pouch - it'll eat 3/4 of what the speaker puts out, because it isn't holed in the right places.
The OP might be using one?
wasn't this the same problem plaguing the g1? just wanted to point this out but the iphone can be "loud" but it actually isn't. trying talking or watching a vid in a room with more than 4 people.

what happened was cyanogen added the volume increase into his ROMs. back in cyan 5.0.7 the volume hack was so ridiculously loud that it couldnt be turned up past around 60% cause it would just kill your ears. then i remember him or someone from the team posting that they were thinking about reducing it in a next version.
so i guess i'm saying you could switch to cyan 5.0.7 if you want to see what the speaker volume really could do and how loud it was, its capable. but it seems like he reduced it in newer cyan version. and nobody wants to use an outdated version, so i guess that doesnt help you. perhaps someone could get them to increase the hack volume again.
Got a link to it? Is there a downside to going to a older version? I have cyan 6.0.0. Is there anything different from this version other than volume compared to 5.0.7?

Well all previous versions of cyanogen ROM are available, but I don't have the link handy. It's on his site or maybe even in ROM manager. If you're really gonna go thru this, I would install cyan 5.0.7. The downside is its a 2.1 based ROM, when 2.2 froyo is now the norm. But that older ROM actually had the 720p video hack working which still isn't fully available on froyo ROMs yet. So that's another advantage of using a 2.1 based cyan ROM, in addition to the audio hack it has.
I'm sure this audio hack could be applied to the new cyan ROM if someone could tell us how to do it.
I sent him a PM but no answer. Its frustrating but also apart of the game. I just want volume.

Need input on how G2X functions as a phone

Considering buying the G2X in 3 days although I am having serious misgivings after reading some of these threads which list the serious issues this device seems to be plagued with. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how the device functions as a phone such as call clarity and volume through headset and speaker phone clarity and volume. Also apparent signal strength etc. Any and all help is warmly received.
I had the 2x for a month nov. And i will say that the phone have some problems.but its a great phone, and many people are working on it, so it will be a very good phone. I will recommend it to every body. Sorry the bad english.

Thanks again I probably will
I have the phone since last friday (Vodafone Germany tho) and it looks like I got a good one lol... I also read all those threads here weeks before getting it and actually made sure that I wouldnt have any issues getting a new one from Vodafone if I had lots of problems.. turns out I dont. Had a few forcecloses the first day (even F-Secure crashed but I never ever launched it so far) but since then not a single one. Also no reboots or major laggs or something similar as reported in that other thread.
The sound quality is actually pretty good, way better then the Nexus One, the speaker is way better.
GPS is fast enough, didnt experience any trouble at all.
But I am going to install a Custom Rom as there are a few lagg spikes when launching apps and stuff but nothing really bad. I just want to see how fast this phone can really be
Also, keep in mind that the device we'll get in the US will be different in build and software from the international version. The speaker/mic combo will most likely be similar, but things like GPS and call quality can vary drastically because they're based on software.

Good point! I use GPS a lot every day and most of the day. I have a Vibrant now and the GPS leaves a lot to be desired. Teetering back and forth as to whether to pull the trigger and get it or not. Probably will though. Been waiting for it to come out for awhile.
I had a Nokia N8 at home, it could find satelites really quick. The LG2X can't.
The speakers are really the worst hardware part of the device.. really bad sound it's the biggest negative. Overall it is a great phone , the best phone I've ever had, and enjoyed the most.. just too sad the soundquality + speakers is really bad imo.. but my contacts told me that they can here me very good.. so its just you suffering on that not the callers -_-
I can just recommend it. But with the sidenote you to check those things by yourself first live, if these attributes are really that important to you, so you don't get disappointed after.
Would like to hear your thoughts of it when u use it, i believe they could have improved G2x compared to the LG2x, cause it has other messsurements and vanilla android so i guess they reacted to the feedback which was given by the buyers.
Sorry for this long text xD
PS. Just tested GPS again.. and it found within 30 seconds within the building =) GPS is fine!
Every phones has its problem. Nothing is perfect. The o2x as a phone is good. No major issues about it. And after installing paul's MCR, it became a lot lot better.
GPS works fine for me. It just depends where am i. There are places where i can only get a fix after 30-60 seconds but most of the time i can get a fix for 5-10 secs only.
Hey guys, thx for the opinions.
At this moment I have an HTC HD2 and after having owned a numerous number of HTC's I am fedup with them. It seems they make models that always have some issue either batt wise, speaker wise etc.
As I use my phone mainly for gps is there someone who can upload a video on youtube showing the startup with gps status or something?
Also my HD2 has/had a quick lock but the receiver fails in other departments like having jitter on the output making the gps go in crazy steps or circles.
I would also love to see a video of how the screen looks in sunlight and how the speaker sounds when you are using the device as navigation in the car.

Thanks so much for your kind input. This is just the kind of feedback I need to make a prudent decision. My only phone is a cell phone so I need the phone part to be first class as well as the GPS which I use on a daily basis(also hourly). Still undecided oh well I guess I still have 2 more days to make a decision.

Poor Call Quality

Anyone else here having hissing/crackling in the background on calls with people?
I have checked settings, I'm not roaming, and the phone is stock out of the box.
With the speaker up to highest and 2nd highest setting I can hear hissing and crackling on several calls. People on the other end say they can hear themselves echoing as well.
Tested a Nexus S and iPhone and both don't have the problem.
Wondering if its just a bad device or issue with the quality of the speaker in the phone(which HTC is known for)
To be more specific, the dead air(in between conversation) sounds hissy/crackling.
I can also hear myself in the earpiece when I talk.
Tried same SIM on nexus s and iphone 4(no problems)
erhm.... LOL?
idk where ur livin or what kinda of provider ur using, but im like 100% sure no one in holland or surrounded (since i dont know the state of other country's have this problem)

your very welcome, and most likely its your provider not the phone, forgot to finish my sentence sometimes im busy and forget to add the rest of what i wanted to say.
Turns out, if the volume is turned up anything beyond 50% of the volume rocker, the sound distorts and can hear very low crackling.
With setting 50% and below crackling is not there.
Maybe a blown speaker? Can anyone test this out on their IS so I know whether to swap it out or not.
Thanks
With the higher volume than 70%, i can hear a little crackilng... So, same problem!
Same problem here, but not with all people (60 % problems ; 40 % - OK.), just with some of them (Nokia users in special)

Low volume

Hi,
I have my xperia sp from one week and i'm satisfact except the volume. It's too low in a call and also in my car bluetooth handsfree. Have you got some dissatisfaction? There are some hidden settings which I can use to solve it?
I came from HTC and I was sure that Sony have to be better in terms of sound and camera but I am a little bit disappoint. Overall pls help me with volume issues.

You can change settings for Headset, Phone Speaker and Bluetooth Device.
I'm not sure about the volume in a call. Maybe it won't get affected. Can't test it right now.
But the described things, like the speaker will get affected and there are some possibilities to
gain volume. Maybe there are some easier ways.
But one thing is for sure, your overall sound quality will rise if you use this driver.

Many years ago Sony was one of the first companies to comply with new EU limits on the output of headphone devices, designed to protect the user from over loud sounds. I believe it originated in France. With some makes of music player you could get around this by loading another region's firmware.
It's typical EU "nanny state" legislation. What it unfortunately doesn't take into account is a) not all haedphones have the same sensitivity and b) not all listening environments are equally quiet.
I can't say whether the SPs rather poor maximum headphone output stems from this or has another cause. What does annoy me, and the Sony is not alone in being like it, is how I only seem to have 3 or 4 useable levels all bunched at the top of the control, with large steps between them making fine control impossible, whilst the rest of the volume control seems to do sweet F.A....

After that I put CWM on the phone and burn a non_EU Stock Rom ( I though from Russia)....other bad news...mu mobile data stop working even I put a new APN from Vodafone Romania. Also low volume in call on speaker was the same. The last I revert to a Vodafone stock ROM from Spain and I thing it's working a little bit better but not satisfactory.

I'm sorry I'm just an ordinary user with no technical knowledge. I saw on Sony's support forum that they suggest repairing to resolve many issues so I thought I'd give it a try.
All I did was link up my phone and computer, run repair and follow on-screen instructions entirely. Once finished my phone's internal speaker becomes much louder.

Have you had any weird sound from speakers on notifications?

Just wondering if any of you sometimes have had any weird sound as distorted / cracked or garbled when phone is ringing or in any notification sound?
Problems found by some users and me:
Crack, Garbled or distorted on notification or incoming calls (ringtone) even on some games.
Doesn't matter the volume level, it's not happening because it is at max level and came a distorted sound, that is not the problem.
It fixes the problem turning off and turning on the phone, so this problem comes intermittent and barely..
I'm pretty sure that could be an android os bug or sound driver bug but still I want to confirm with some of you.
We have 2 Nexus 6 at home, my wife and mine and both of us have experienced the same weird sound issue rarely times and not often, so I don't think that is a defective hardware but I am not sure.
1st Nexus 6 phone Lollipop 5.01 , Stock and rooted
2nd Nexus 6 phone Lollipop 5.01, Stock, Not rooted.
Please advise.

At max. The problem is that distortion from notification sound it comes intermittent, it can happen once in a while, it is not always. That is on my end even on my wife phone it does the same. Isn't that weird?

I have noticed this also, it is like a crack just before the actual notification starts to play.
I used to get it all the time on the Twitter app when loading photos (load a photo, go back leave it say 10 secs and load the same photo), it annoyed me so much that I changed my twitter app to just get rid of it.
Obviously is software. Sometimes even it doesn't come out. For example the facebook pop sound when you refresh the news feed. Going to RMA the phone for other issues, I'll let you know if in my new one there is the same problem.
I am having similar problems. I get massive sound distortions all the time. When listening to music, watching videos and playing games. It sounds like a vinyl witch scratches and hurts my ears. I had created another thread but nobody seemed to have the same problem. Is anybody here witnessing something like that as well?
I was having the same problems (at least I don't notice it any more). What I did notice it seemed to always happen when you double clicked on your notification from the lock screen. It was really starting to bother me as I paid a fortune for this phone and it shouldn't have this. Anyway's, I think I found a fix as I don't seem to have the problem any more (it's been 3 to 4 days). I went into sounds and chose other sounds and disabled the screen locking sounds. It seemed to have work. I do have the touch sounds disabled to, but when I only had that on it still did the distorted sound. I'll re-enable it and see if I still get the distortion. I'll post later on.

Are you getting this through the speakers or through a headset. Mine is working great for music or video playback. I also don't blast it either, that could be it.
I'm getting that same issue. Even when I get a call it distorts and it only seems to do that when my ringer is on full blast... It sounded horrible.. It almost made me wanna switch back to my M8 GPE edition.

For me volume does not matter. Also, it is irrelevant if I use speakers or headphones. Same thing happens.
