HTC Sense on Google Nexus One! - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
My dad has just bought a Google Nexus One. He had some HTC phones before and he really likes HTC Sense because it is very clean and simple. He likes the widgets (like HTC Weather, HTC Mail, HTC widget for news, etc.). I checked out the development section here on XDA but now i'm very confused. I would like you to tell me which is the best, stable and with good battery life, Sense ROM for Nexus One.
Thank you very much.

evil's NXsense ROM is pretty sweet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791151
It's a really stable port from the desire HD with all the latest bells and whistles (i.e, flipping clock, themes and whatnot) steps to instal are as follows:
1.) use AmonRa recovery to repartition to 1Gb SD-EXT/0 SWAP
2.)Wipe
3.) Flash the ROM!
4.) Reboot. (takes some time on first boot. be patient)
Any questions, pm me. installed this thing like a million times.

It's not really fit for mortals' daily use yet, but there is a ROM from the Desire S being worked on right now (as in, gingerbread-sense, tchyeah!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995445

best sense rom
evil's 1.26 rom is the best by far. solid, best battery life ...even has some themes you can add.. good luck.

My grandad once had an abacus that he swore by. It was painful to watch as it took a whole day for him to work out his finances on it. He didn't want to use the calculator that i bought for him at first, but after a while he readily agreed that what he was used to wasn't necessarily the best thing!
Allegorical tales are the best
To put it another way, flashing a Sense ROM to a Nexus One is like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa!

Allegories are nice, but there is absolutely nothing that stock Nexus ROM does, even in Gingerbread, that old Desire Froyo didn't do a lot better - and most important (for my wife who receives my Nexus soon) - better looking and easier to understand.
For anyone who's not into tinkering with his gadgets - I'd suggest any Sense ROM over any stock ROM. Nexus isn't different.
To the OP: If WiFi hotspot is necessary - DesireHD ports don't have it, so you're set with Desire port. Otherwise they both work quite well. The only major worthy difference I saw would be the browser - pinch-to-zoom would go out into window mode on Sense 2.0, allowing to choose between open browser windows. Nice feature.

WiFi hotspot is not necessary. I think i will go for Desire port. Maybe i will also try the Desire HD port.
LATER EDIT:
THIS EXPERIENCE WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE. I have followed a tutorial from theunlockr to Root the phone and install Amun Ra Recovery. Everything worked perfectly. After flashing the Desire Port ROM on the Nexus One and rebooted, the phone didn't passed the screen with a lock and the X from nexus logo (boot-loop). I found a ROM on the internet and flashed that (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427) . Now my phone is working, got some com.android.phone force-closing but now it looks ok. I'm really scared to try it again. What have i done wrong? *sorry for my bad english *

you can always just put the wireless tether app on top of SenseHD if you want a hotspot, don't have to use built-in.

Don't be scared... you gotta *rreeallllyy* **** something up to truly brick your phone. As long as you can get to the bootup screen you can generally bring it back. Some ROMS are more stable than others, but they are (usually though not always) older as a result, because they've been tried and tested. Things like the Cyanogen Mod Nightlies are awesome and cutting edge, but not for the average consumer. I've personally don't like how the Sense launcher responds, so I never stuck with any HTC ROMS, but when I was testing it out I had some really good luck with the MoDaCo roms. You can get the prebaked roms on the site or if you pay for membership you get access to the online kitchen as well (where you can customize the rom before downloading it). Give the MoDaCo port a shot if the phone keeps crashing, and if **** goes down.... recovery image ftw!

is there any Sense ROM which doesnt require creating a partition on the SD Card? As in install in the same manner in which I install CM7 or Blandroid. I dont like the idea of having things installed over the SD card.
I have looked and not come across anything so If I've missed something, please point me in the right direction.
thanks

Firstime Android Rom Flasher, Need ROM Advice (Former WinMo Rom Junkie)

Hey guys.
Well, I used to own an HTC Titan, and I would just spend days and days flashing and cooking ROMs like no one's business, but due to cost issues and general irritation with that phone, I switched to a flip phone for a while. Now, I'm back, on Sprint with a CDMA Hero and an unlimited data plan and I want to really see what this thing can do.
Yes, I have the Sprint 2.1 update and I've rooted it successfully. However, for some reason, everything felt a bit sluggish so I factory restored. (Don't know how to explain this, but kinda regretting it when I see all these custom ROMs floating around). Now, I want to get back into ROM flashing.
I wanted to get your guys' opinion on what ROM to use. I do have just one condition though, so hear me out before you tell me which one you love .
Simply put, I love HTC Sense. I've used my friend's Samsung Moment and I could not stand the UI. Sense, to me, has a sort of refinement I've grown to love. (just the way I am, I guess. So yeah, by extension, I don't want or need JiT. I've seen the differences in linpack tests and I'm not impressed enough to ditch Sense for it. Also, does Sense have to be cooked into a ROM by default or can I flash it in as an addon?
So what are your picks? I'd love to have something fast.
Damn another one of these. Go with fresh 2.od with the two updates. or with actually it depends what you like most of the overclocked roms are good but they have one setback when you push menu or the power button to get them to turn on there is a delay. but other than that there good and fast. I like zenexp slide port because it has this thing called mymodes where you can change your themes on the spot. It's hard to describe but it's good

This.
@OP - Fresh 2.1.2. If you want friendstream JsChiSurf has a mod to fresh that makes it work. I am running it now but am having issues with gmail not giving me notifications. Which is a HUGE deal.
Ill throw my rom in there. It has sense and is based off of fresh 2.1.2 but ovetclocked and fully themed. Not for everyone but its there.

I would say give fresh 2.3.3 a try it has the sense ui and lots of cool stuff on it and of course the dancing android bootscreen rocks!!.
Try fresh2.3.3. I've been using it for a week, and it's pretty cool.

since everyone claimed fresh ill put zenexp out there, its light and fast,i run it with darchs uv oc 710 kernal and love the hell out of it
Id put mine out there but no1 likes is recommend fresh or red dawn or blue echo my favorites

Just wanted to say that I used to LOVE Htc Sense as well... I've reverted to AOSP based roms such as PureHero or Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 - reasoning why is that I feel that Sense really bogs down the phone and I feel like my Htc Hero responses a whole lot better and smoother as well.

N00b question

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

get the evo or wait for the galaxy s pro
The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...

Best Nexus One Rom?

Hi guys,
I have a N1 and have moved from Froyo to Sense. My question, are there any Custom roms which have the best of both worlds?
Froyo features I like, Pattern unlock without having to swipe unlock first, shows charge levels when charging.
Sense features I like, Widgets, Music Player.
Is there a custom rom with best of both, or can you load the HTC apps onto Froyo independently?
Thanks in advance.
Plz ask in the q&a forum.
I don't think the Froyo Sense rom is stable yet.
I found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184
It has a black bar and is Froyo. It's pretty much a hacked stock build thats not bloated but rooted and ready for hacking.

If you have an At&t version could you please disable the 3g data and just enable the wifi and test if the wireless keep alive when the phone go to sleep

Many good ROM's to try out. Just start with a ROM, flash it, test it for a few days, if you don't like it, try another.
No ROM is better than the other, is all about personal taste. Many people praise Cyanogen's work, though i admit he does a good job on his work, i prefer a ROM more closer to stock then i just take a little from others and put it in in the one i use for my own personal taste.

Need a Better ROM Than CM

I have had about enough of CyanogenMod. Been using it since 5, and every single version has had significant usability problems. Currently in 7.0.3 photos are bad, GPS is non-functional, it forgets settings like keyboard, and when I first answer the phone no one can hear me.
Terrible. There has got to be something better. If not I'm going to stock.
You can use MIUI ROM
Enomther's
It's not gingerbread but is by far the most stable and the fastest.
There's many ROM on this forum, you are free to use which ever make you happy.
CM7 has been great for me since the first nightly.
Autinhyeu seriously? Like RoDrIgUeZsTyLe, or straight MIUI?
Are most functions stable?
baseballfanz I'm glad you've had such luck. Many of us haven't. I'm looking for feedback of others' experiences on which ROMs seem to work the best. I already know which one I'm not using anymore.

Yes, MIUIMOD from Rod
i had use MIUI Stock 4 months ago, then i use CM 7 nightly build, and now, i comeback MIUI with MIUIMOD ROM, after a week use, with some tutorial, i think its best for my phone at the moment, hehe... some user dont want use MIUI, because it like as iOS but i dont care, it gives me comfort & i use it...
With MIUIMOD, you will have more than free Internal memory and RAM memory...
anyway, i saw dont more difference between the CM7 and MIUI, you can choice
With CM all I had to do was wipe and use Amon Ra to flash zip.
There are no instructions with RoDrIgUeZsTyLe except "MIUIMOD D2SD HowTo", which only seems to do with partitioning. Do partitions actually need to be changed, and if so why?
How to apply the ROM and why aren't there instructions?
Also he says, " (Please Read the D2SD HowTo)", but there's no link and a search doesn't turn it up.
MIUI is pretty good
Which one? I've found four so far, including one that seems to have Chinese buttons.

Goto Rod's thread i will help you, if i can :d
Sent from my MIUIMOD using XDA Premium App
You should definitely go for QND MIUI
Used it from the beginning and I'm loving it. It's stock MIUI with XJ's multilanguage pack, so it's just like MIUI is supposed to be. No junk or ugly themes added
I also get the delayed connection when I answer calls but besides that CM7 is the best there is.Some debate MIUI is better but its a matter of the individuals likes/dislikes. Also the themes and control of customization on CM7 IMO by far surpasses any other rom out there currently so you should prolly stick w/ CM. Hopefully the next stable release fixes the bugs your speaking of
Mouse I've been patient with CM since version 5, and I am fed up.
The good news is I am really digging this MIUIMod. Seems much more modern, smooth, and usable than CM. Have just now gotten things set up so it remains to be seen how well things work, but the camera is sure better and that's a biggie for me.
Takes forever to boot (no big deal) and I am missing my Galaxy wallpaper, but I am:

flash away then and see what one you like the best thats what its all about...i would just use stock miui from either here or miui-dev if you are that finicky about roms
I just have so much to set up that it takes about a day. This is one thing that was so irritating abut CM; in order to correct atrocious usability bugs I'd have to completely reinstall each month and start all over again. I started with Rodriguez today and that's fine so far except for the lack of Galaxy wallpaper. Still have alot to learn about MIUI. Lucky it's Saturday...
You could always to CM6.x if you like CM's features.

So much has been fixed and improved in the latest cyan nightlies over 7.0.3 that you prob should try that out first.
Have you given any of eVilD's sense roms? NXSense and NXSense HD have been working pretty well for me, although nobody can beat MIUI battery life and cuatomuzability
Haven't checked out the Sense ROMs.
MIUI is very nice so far. Desktops rotate like a cube and other nice effects. It's like a 21st century iPhone except without the restrictions, not a 20th century Windows-like CM phone. And I've found the Galaxy wallpaper in the market. My desktops are games|multimedia|default|appts/calendar|utilities. There is no launcher place where all the apps are; all apps are on desktops, but you can put apps inside a folder app which is very handy. Those apps I use are on desktops, those I rarely use are in Apps, Utilities, Multimedia, and Unused folders. No more screenshot app needed; it's Menu:VolDown now.
GPS still has problems, and still some things I haven't figured out. I need to put contacts into folders in the contacts app. With CM I'd put them into one contact and change the label to Custom with their name in it. That is only simulating folders though. Wish there were a better way or an app that could handle folders. Edit: Hey, Contacts has something called Groups, which just may be the ticket! Experimenting.
Does anyone know why DroidWall is no longer in the Market? That is my most valued app to keep out G**gle's prying eyes.

[Q] New Incredible S user needs advice

Hi,
I traded my ZTE blade for an incredible S and boy what an incredible difference,
but i have a problem ..... :/
I don't like SENSE, so i'm looking for an AOSP as possible rom
I tried CM7, but all versions i tried (latest nightly, 7.1, older nightly) have problems with the camera :/ the image freezes, unless you rotate or select an option, then it moves again untill i stop using a setting or it has been rotated, and that is VERY annoying ....
also, when i install a tiamat kernell, the device hangs on the htc logo and does not boot .. I hoped that changing kernels would cure the problem
So I am looking for another rom to use, I want a stable, fully functional as AOSP as possible rom that is rooted and has an unlocked (overclockable) kernel
can someone point me in the right direction?
NB: i've been looking in the forums, but it's a lot of info and hard to find what i want ... I've been on MODACO the whole time i hade my blade, but for Incredible they have no lively community, so i'm putting my hopes on XDA
NB2: No need to tell me about S-off and how to install clockwork recovery, that has already been done
u don't like sense then go for android revolution hd..
it has an option to remove sense via no sense script..
it is most stable rom out there.
afaik, cm7 and miui are the only aosp roms available for our phone. someone correct me if i'm wrong.
one of the downsides of aosp roms for our phone is that the camera quality is not as good as sense roms. i've read that the reason for this is because htc has not released the code. until then, we are stuck with it. having said that, i've read that the miui camera is a bit better than the cm7 camera. you can try the miui rom or download the miui camera and try it with cm7.
Thank you for replying to my question.
I'm gonna go for Android revolution with Sense removed.
Actually I already did it, now all I need is an AOSP dialer to put in there, because the HTC dialer isn't really my thing.
Great phone by the way, i'm utterly impressed with everything so far
NB: the HTC camera app is awesome
You can try to use go launcher, or touchizwiz4 or any other custum launcher of all above doesn't do the job for you.

then wth did u get the incredible s?
htc makes incredible s, htc makes sense.
you're not making any sense if u use aosp on a sense phone

So if we want to use AOSP you're saying we should only buy a Nexus?

Why not wait for that new quad core HTC?
i was doubting between the nexus an the incredible.
but in the shop where i work (and where i get discount) we don't have the nexus
and the 8 MP camera did it for me. i never base my purchase on software, i just look at the hardware for android devices, then i turn to romswapping
now, does anyone know a good dialer from the market?
I want something similar to CM7 dialer, i tried installing it, but it f*** the phone
Oh.
And no offence, but saying that buying htc equals using sense is like saying you cant buy a windows computer and then put linux on it. Same thing

a good dialer would be go dialer. basically go made most of everything.
go keyboard, go contacts,go sms, go dialer, go launcher.. etc etc

ahh, but if u buy a windows pc, u can dual boot windows and linux. that makes it entirely different. a hybird i'd say. even if there's a dual booting program in android, it's still immature and can brick the phone anytime

That was just... stupid, some people actually buy a PC, reformats the HDD and then install a Linux dist, without dualbooting with Windows.
Are they stupid too?
No?
Didn't think so. Your argument sucks.
let's get back to phones..
for me selling point for htc phones is sense..you can argue as long as u want but it's d truth..that's y they r always looking to improve d sense and other's like samsung, motorola
are also trying to put a layer of there software on top of android.

d people u r talking abt are programmers and app devs..not d casual user.
I've been dev'ing roms for the ZTE Blade and i been programming some android as well (not too much, just basic stuff). I'm not really a casual user.
It also wasn't my meaning to go dissin' Sense. I just happen to not like it. So I bought a phone after I checked that it was CM7 compatible, which the Incredible is, but unfortunatly the camera is broken on all non Sense Roms (CM7 and MIUI (tried both))

I was only trying to make a point, which I obviously failed with, so I'll just write my point in clear-text:
His argument is stupid, and he doesn't realize it.

Weird, for me the camera in CM7 (using a nightly, dunno which one though) works pretty good. Sure it lags if it's bad lightning, but I've never had a cellphone with a camera that's good enough so I can use it if it's dark...
But I can't compare with how it's in a Sense ROM, haven't been using a Sense ROM since I realized how unnecessery all the stuff from Sense is for me
@mandeep
thank you for making my point clear.
@splux
implying yourself that you failed to make your point clear, how can you tell my argument is stupid? it is actually you who failed to understand what i am pointing out. well you see, there is no point in getting a phone which runs primarily on sense. htc made phones with sense. and to run aosp on a sense phone is like playing mario on a dual gtx 590 pc computer.
ah, and yes. i agree that people who buys windows pc and run linux without dualbooting are developers, more to the networking sector. they arent stupid, but rather smart. because in linux, 95% of viruses wont affect your work, as they're written for windows only. so your argument is invalid.
by saying my argument is rather stupid, you made a fool out of yourself without realizing it.

I tried Cm7 older nightly, latest nightly and stable 7.1 and MIUI and all of them freeze the preview image of the camera on the screen, unless i rotate it or touch the settings, then the image moves, but it freezes again, the moment i stop touching the settings or when the rotation sequence is done .... strange isn't it ?
Also, when i flash a Tiamat kernel the device hangs on the HBOOT .... I have a 1.13 device, maybe thats it. Anyway, I just spent the last hours customizing the Android revolution zip file to my taste (since i have some ROM knowledge)
I got rid of most of the sense stuff (Hope i did not delete too much, hehe) and replaced some apps, removed bloatware and changed bootanim. Just the dialer is bugging me, but i'll have a look at godialer, i bet i find smth that suits me
Still too bad i cant use CM7 I really love it, but one of the key points of buying this phone was the camera, so if it's useless on CM7, I have to ditch it for another rom ....
