Thinking about buying a color nook to root for my wife - Nook Color General

Hi, my wife wants to get a tablet and she has 3 requirements. She wants to watch movies and TV shows that are in avi, able to browse flash websites, and view shows on abc.com/hulu/etc.
I read about the xoom bugs and the price is a little outrageous. Not really interested in the Samsung tab. The nook color rooted would be a great value but can it do those things?
Thanks. Calicene.

2 out of 3?
HI
i am using a nook color. with phiremod 5.1 flashed onto the eemc CUSTOM ROM
1. if you are using rockplayer to watch the avi files for tv shows you download it won't be a problem.
2. flash 10.2 the latest version works.
3. me personally i have not been able to get hulu to work reliably. there is a flashplayer hack out there for the viewsonic gtab. i installed it on my nook but it didnt have audio. there is supposed to be a paid app called playon.tv ? but it wasnt reliable for me on trial either..
i purchased my nook color for 200 bucks on the ebay deal, with tax and shipping 216. so i am very happy with it. I use it for digital photo menu at my restaurant. screen is very very clear. it plays games well. also the battery life is good. i think nook color from the store + tax is like 266 dollars.
i also just purchased the viewsonic gtab for 285 shipped from woot.com, its also 307 from tigerdirect (look on the gtab general forums in xda) havent received it yet.
also, i could only get slingbox to work on a nookiefroyo build running off the sd card... if you wanted to have another tv option.
the hardware is very nice for 250 bucks.

Thanks for the input. What about abc.com and nbc.com for stream viewing shows? She visits those sites more than hulu anyways. Also, do you like the viewsonic gtab or nook color better?

I just tried both abc and nbc.com. neither would play on mine. I'm running flashed nookie froyo with flash 10.2 through the dolphin broswer. Nbc saaid not compattible with my device and abc wanted latest version of flash 10.1. Not sure why 10.2 wouldn't work.

nbc and abc both playing on cm7, bluetooth build. albeit - they are both choppy. hulu says not a supported platform... do the gtab and galaxy play this stuff smoothly?
i am not overclocked, and wonder if that would help.

[Q] Nook playing flash content from these site works?

I see most videos on youtube of nook color are playing youtube vids but nothing else.. searching xda forums not going anywhere...
can someone try these sites like
http://sky7anime.net/anime/bleach/watch/bleach-episode-311
www.animecrazy.net
and see if it plays on your froyo nc?
Plan to order the nook color before the $50 expires tomorrow.
thanks!
I am running CM7 and the videos play fine using Dolphin HD with the latest version of flash. Hope that helps.

[Q] CM7 & Nook Kids Books

For those of you running CyanogenMod, do you still have the full B&N Reader experience? I'd love to run CM but my kids have books on the Nook Color. Not regular books but the nook kids books that only run on Nook Color and iPad.
unfortunately you have to stay on auto-nooter (rooted stock eclair rom) to keep the B&N stuff.
Right now the NOOKcolor app that comes with the stock OS and supports newspapers, magazines, and kids books does not work on anything but the stock OS. There is ongoing work to try to get it going under alternative ROMs. Subscribe to this thread for more info:

Unfortunately the best you can do right now is set up dual-boot between CM7 and stock.

Thank you for pointing that thread out to me. I absolutely will subscribe to it. That is exactly the kind of think I wanted to see. I very much appreciate it.
Let me make sure I get this right. Say you abandon B&N stock and run something like NookieFroyo or CM7 then download the B&N app from the market. The downloaded B&N app does not work on NF/CM7 ?!?!!
The Nook app works under CM7 but will not read magazines, newspapers, or books that self-read. This last one leaves out many good kids books.

The videos of CM7 I've seen on Youtube look fantastic, but if I can't read my Economist subscription, then it's a deal breaker.
I just rooted my NC last night with Autonooter and it's a real thrill to suddenly feel like I finally own my Nook Color (an un-rooted Nook feels more like Barnes and Noble is lending you the device). I'd love to go full throttle with something like CM7, but honestly, I primarily bought the NC as an eReader+ so I'm just happy to be able to play the occasional game of Angry Birds. Now, if Popcap will just get off their butts and release Plants v. Zombies for Android all will be awesome in my world.

[Q] Netflix Update anyone?

I haven't seen a posting about Netflix and Xoom in a while. Does anyone have an update on their progress? Has anyone gotten a hacked version working?
Will be a while before we see a HC version. Frameworks are different is the main reason I can see why it's not running on any HC device at the moment.
Bummer too...
Sad that I can stream my Netflix on my hacked Nook but not on my Xoom. Soon, I hope...
can your nook use any tablet specific apps effectively?

Mine can as long as they are compatible with 2.2.x. There are a lot of tablets on the market still (and new ones releasing) with Gingerbread on them and not Honeycomb.

I haven't tried that on my NookColor yet. Cool. It works good on my DX. Would be better on the 10.1 inch screen though! If the Xoom had an HDMI in, I'd be all set. I have RealHDMI on the DX. I still haven't even tried hooking my phone or the Xoom up to my TV yet.

I should have clarified that I had to set the NC so that Netflix sees it as a Nexus S, but this was easy to do with instructions found in another thread.
Best wishes,

I have a Nook too and it plays Netflix perfectly. I consider it my Tablet Lite.
It is depressing that my uber-tablet with 32gb of storage, 1gb of ram, dual for CPU, nvidia CPU, and so on can't play Netflix, where my ebook reader can.
My Netflix account is on hold until they fix this... or I have to cancel it.

I know the feeling but I am hopeful that netflix will be making its way to us, but on the bright side Amazon Video works

Who uses NC as Tablet?

Im kinda curious... how do you guys use your Nook?
Did you ditch retail os for cm? Do you use both?
I did, running on nothing but cm.

CM only, waiting for CM9
I emmc dual boot stock and CM7. Only reason I still have stock at all is for the kids interactive books.
CM only. Been running ICS since the source were first pushed/I learned to compile.
Dual booting BN 1.4.1 on eMMC for subscriptions and Conde Nast pubs, with CM (Mirage) on SD. Probably going back to CM on eMMC soon.
After many variations on my emmc and sd card, I finally settled for MN 1.3 which allows full BN software access (especially "read in store" which I use to offset no ebook discounts or coupons) and relatively unimpeded Market access on the "Zeam" side.
I recently updated it with 5.12.20 which (though designed for 1.4.1) installed with no problems and has not caused any issues.
One major plus with it is that I can now use HBO Go! The image is not quite as good as Netflix but is certainly acceptable.
Use very few apps on the BN side with almost all app usage on the "Zeam" side.
Very pleased with the current setup.
Now, if I could just figure out how to stretch the screen to 8.9 inches all would be right with the world!
Having never set up MN, how do you switch from Zeam to stock when in use?
Comes up as option (which side do you want to use type of thing) when you finish booting or whenever you press the "N" button.
From 12/2010 until around 8/2011 I used my NC as my tablet, but also read quite a bit on it, using CM7 most of that time. I got a Dell Streak 7 in August, and mostly the NC got dusty in the meanwhile.
But now I've been playing with it again quite a bit with ICS on it.

I got my nook yesterday and it's already rid of stock.
I couldn't find any use for it, JUST books. And I can download an Android e-reader so why bother? I love mine on CM, I'm waiting on a second memory stick to convert my mom's as well. She's made because mine is hacked and has so many more functions and hers isn't
CM only on mine. I'm pretty sure most of the other people here are using CM as well.

I purchased a refurbished NC a month ago for $119 (?) and on first boot installed CM7 on emmc.
Use it primarily as a reader with Kindle, Zinio, news via browser and a weekly publication i get in PDF format.

Boy, I use my nook for everything. I have run every rom out there. Currently running MIUI. Read news, Facebook, books, play games, listen/watch podcasts, watch Netflix and TV.com, use it as a personal planner - email, calendar and task list, use educational apps for my kids and grandkids, surf pinterest, and on and on. I have so many apps that i had to expand my data image to 2 GB. My whole life is on my nook! I'm a 53 year old grandma and feel pretty proud that at my age I've hacked nooks for myself and 4 others. They are as hooked on their nooks as I am.

Miui rom with Zeam launcher from SD, but I will install CM or Miui to emmc since we can't use the B&N store in Europe.
My family members are using the Nook as an ereader, checking mail and for Facebook. I use it also as my portfolio for clients showing still photographs and 360° panorama images.

So I have been away from the forums for a few months (maybe more, heh). Where can I find more info on this build?
I've had my Nook for a year, and although it's been rooted, I only used it as an ereader. I just installed CM7 on it today, and I still plan to use only reader apps on the device. I like the freedom of being able to customize the device any way I want. CM7 is great, but my NC will still be used mainly as a reader.
I am dual-booting Nook 1.4.1 and CM7, but I spend most of my time on CM7

[Q] Any way to side load non-B&N apps without rooting

I know this may seem like an odd question, but let me explain. Since getting a 10" tablet (initially a TouchPad running ICS, but my wife bought an iPad3 for me a few weeks ago) I only use the Nook as an eReader. I really like it in that role, but I also still find it kind of unstable in all but stock form. This includes rooted stock 1.4.2, CM7, and CM9. For the most part this instability takes the form of SODs.
Anyway, the other day I reverted to stock 1.4.2 and think that will work well for me given how I use the device now with one exception...over half of the books that I read are for Amazon Kindle Reader, not B&N Nook. Of course, I can read these on my iPad, but I do like the form factor and portability of the Nook for reading. I could root 1.4.2 again and stick with the stock kernel to avoid SODs, but in a perfect world what I'd like to do is just flip the config setting that tells Android to allow external apps to be installed/run and leave everything else stock. Then I'd like to put on just the Amazon Kindle Reader app.
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this without committing to the full rooting approach?
Thanks!
Nope, you would have to root.

If
SOD's come because you've let the unit go into deep sleep with WiFi turned on...
And
You are only using the NC to read Kindle books...
Then
Rooting the NC then turning WiFi off after you've loaded the Kindle app will avoid the SOD's.
Yes?
Why not convert your Kindle mobis into epubs with Calibre. Short learning curve, and good results.
Check out page 4 in this thread. It works

another vote for "download your library using nook for pc, convert to an open format" - works great for me.
I'm not a big fan of reading (or listening music or watching movies) online. I'd rather convert all my paid ebook to pdf, epub, mobi, or whatever the format is then save them on my local eMMC or uSD.
Thanks for the info! I've actually decided to get a Nook Simple Touch Glowlight for my eReader duties and sell the Nook Color. I've really enjoyed the NC while I've owned it, but at this point since I really am just using it as an eReader, I like the digital ink display, battery life, and form factor of the NST for that dedicated purpose.
