No incomming calls while in 3G (UMTS) Network - HTC Incredible S

Hi all together.
I'm interested if someone else can confirm this Problem. Situation:
- HTC Incedible S (brand new )
- Provider: Orange Switzerland
We suddenly recognized, that it's not possible to call this phone . The caller just get's a voice-info that the "The person you have called is temporary not available. Please try later". But the other way round works perfectly, so a call-out FROM the Incredible works fine and everytime.
I did some investigations and discovered the following:
- When forcing to 2G (=GSM) the Problem disappears.
- When forcing to 3G (=UMTS) the Problem reappears - but...
- ... when at the same time "mobile data connection" is active --> Problem away!
So when i'm at my home then the WiFi-Connection automatically get's active and the "mobile data connection" get's offline. And in this situation no calls reach the phone any more. If i manually disable WiFi (and then "mobile data" get's active again): Voila, everything is ok.
Reenabling WiFi - mobile data goes off: No more incomming calls.
Disabling both WiFi and mobile data: Also no incomming calls.
It seems that the incomming-call-signaling is handled in a way that requires an active mobile-data-connection. This seems to be a little bit odd.
Thanks for any ideas or just a confimation that i'm not alone.
Oli
P.S.: Of course i called the providers hotline. But they just said that there is no problem in the net. I should try it a few days later agein. Damn...

Hmm sounds strange....
The only tip I can give currently: goto settings - WiFi & networks - mobile data. And check the mobile data always on.
It's not a real solution, but should fix it for the time being.
But it is strange... Should not happen, maybe there are some problems with there network, so keep trying for the next few days. Otherwise contact them again.

ah! I believe this is something to do with the network provider. Do you live in a place where the network coverage is midiocre? I have the same problem with the iphone 4 (with the bumper )... sometimes even I am not able to make calls... so I have to switch off my 3G! it is indeed odd coz it interupts with the wifi! Did you try doing a master reset?

Thanks for this idea, but this option was already checked. This seems to be the default, so all my tests (as described in the first post) ran under this config (e.g. "mobile-data-always-on" is checked)
Hm. Still hope for any other ideas.

No, it seems to be a pretty good UMTS-coverage. And the mobile-data-download-speed with HSPDA is really fast (1-2 MBit/s). And when i go outdoor the signal-strength (as shown on the phones display) goes up to 4-of-4-bars (100% Signal). And still: incomming calls not working.
So i think the 'physical' Network-Infrastructure is not the problem. It's obviously a netwrok-logic-problem.
Thanks a lot for your help/ideas.

Ok, some new observations.
The problem of "no incomming calls while connected through UMTS" seems to be a local problem of the network-cell/Antenna around my home.
If i'm about 500m away then the problem seems to disappear..
Of course i did not test every Antenna of Orange Switzerland
Another point: I wrote that the problem just occures when i'm booked in in UMTS AND mobile-data is inactive. That's not completly true, as my newest investigations show: The problem is also present if UMTS-mobile-data is enabled.
But it dissapears for some seconds while and shortly after there is mobile-data-traffic.
Example:
- UMTS forced (no GSM), mobile-data enabled, WiFi disabled
- Phone 'idles' some minutes, no background data-transfer
- Here the Phone can not be called
- Now i go into Android-Market, search a 'Big-App' (10-20MB) and start download
- While the download is in Progress the Phone CAN be called
- A few seconds after the download completes, the Phone still CAN be called
- But later - let's say 60 seconds - the Problem re-appears.
So it seems that an active data-transfer is like a 'heartbeat' for the Orange-Cell and the Cell registers the phone as 'online'. But when data-idle the heartbeat is missin.
I will make some more calls to the Orange Hotline

did you solve it. i don't think thats the case certainly not for me as i'm having exactly that issue of no calls while in 3g mode but if i go back to a stock rom its fine. so the reception distance/signal is identical (i.e i haven't moved anywhere) and its fine on one rom and not another so it must be software (in my case)

So, hi together.
As the original poster i can now confirm that the described problem dissapeared.
We had nothing to do - so no change of any settings nor doing any software-updates. It's simply woking again.
So i'm no pretty sure that the problem was just a local one, in exactly out network-cell. No problem of the device.
Nevertheless: Thanks all for yout infos and tipps.

3G connection keeps "stopping".

Hi, the search button has failed me. (Two posts in 2 years isnt too bad is it?)
My issues is.... accessing the internet over 3g works fine (and HPSDA) Internet, push mail everything... however, If I drop out of coverage at any time my internet connection vanishes as to be expected. However once connection is re-established still the Internet fails to work. It shows connected to 3G or HPSDA but all websites time out and Activesync reports waiting for network.
The fix is to go Start>Settings>Connections>Connections>Manage my existing connections.
Then I simply "Next" thru all the settings until I get to the end. Press Finish. The data connection drops and the re-establishes and Im working again!?!! Very Annoying!
Im running. Duttys 6.1 Rom (April) and a few bits a pieces (It happens with nothing installed also and with another ROM I tried in desperation!) T-Mobile UK
Does this sound like a Radio issue to you guys? Should I try another Radio or Ditch Dutys Rom? (Which I love)
Any help gratefully accepted.
If Downgraded to WM6 (T-Mobile stock ROM) and Im still having this issue. Very frustrated.
I've found a few posts from the US who seem to have the same sort of issue. 3g does not recover after dropping out of service.
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/...thread.id=88007&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
Not sure what to do now...
I've had the same sort of thing, I just disconnect (Long press on the red End call key or click on the 3G icon in the top bar and hit disconnect), and let it reconnect.
I have exactly the same issue with mine as well and its only started recently. I too have found the only way to fix it is to go through and 're setup' the connection. Disconnecting and reconnecting, rebooting all seem to do nothing...

Which symbol is most of the time in the top of your screen G/E/3G/H...?! Check this one out also --> my 3G issue
I usually have a H (1 or 2 bars), when walking around my office this can drop to a 3G connection at times.
If I head to the basement, I drop to the Areial symbol or completely disconnect.... When the H or 3G connection starts again my Data connection fails as described above.
(However, I am able to make normal outgoing voice calls, not tried incoming yet)
Ok, I think I have a work around that seems to be working for me.
I set my BAND to GSM only as a test.... and it worked for the whole day, when I dropped into a NO SERVICE area the data connection dropped. When it recovered my data connection was back and working.
Obviously GSM is too slow, so I've now set my BAND settings to;
Network Type - WCDMA
UMTS Band - UMTS(2100+800)
And also diasabled HSDPA.
Currently everything seems ok... Now my connection does not drop from HSDPA>3G>G and back up again it seems to work fine?? Seems the issue may be with switching between the GSM standards??
I realise I wont get coverage in GSM only area's, but consistant data (Push Email) is just as important to me.
I've the same problem, but changing settings to gsm only is no solution. In this case I have to restart my Kaiser to get a new working connection.
I also have many Problems since updating to wm 6.1. Can I downgrade to the original german 6.0 or is there a really stable german 6.1 out there?
I've been getting the same problem as well for the past month or so.
Have been 'fixing' the problem by either putting the phone into airplane mode and back again, or rebooting the phone.
It's getting quite annoying though
Stopping the phone dropping to GSM seems to work for me. Leaving me with HDSPA and 3G.
I'm lucky to be in a good 3G coverage area I guess.
Im not sure who we should log this issue with? Carrier or HTC?
Are we all on T-Mobile having this issue?
i'm on o2 germany and a one day test with t-mobile didn#t show this error
with o2 i have this problem about three times a day
any new ideas since july ?
Sometimes i want to throw my phone away.
I'm still having the problem as well. Has anybody figured out a solution?

Loss to GSM Network

I have a TyTNII phone and after reading extensively through the threads posted, seems to have a unique problem.
My device will show the "E" icon and service provider in the Today screen and everything will be normal.
After connecting to the Active Sync via USB the phone will be normal for a while, but at some stage will disconnect from the GSM network and show no service.
At this stage the "E" icon changed to a "G". I have tried selecting the service provider, finding the network etc, but it keeps telling me to disconnect the data service and try again.
At first I thought it was blue tooth, but it does make no difference. I have loaded all the comm utils I could find and none is showing any active data sessions or connections.
Reset does not work, taking the SIM out and putting it back does not work, not even taking the battery out makes a difference.
All that seems to work is to put the SIM back in another phone and let the phone boot up to get GSM connection. After that I can put the SIM back in the TyTNII and all will be fine - even for days - as long as I do not connect USB to the PC.
Do you have any ideas on what I can do to solve the matter - it is irretating like hell to swap a sim every now and then...
could be wrong but is there a wired connection on your pc/laptop that uses a dial out and not gprs, this could cause it to run a connection on gsm on gprs.
Thank you for the reply - I have checked my pc and have no dialup connections - currently connected to Internet via Ethernet.
I have also checked the phone - during this shutdown period I am able to browse the internet from the phone.
This tells me that I have internet access, just no GSM service - its like the phone is switching the GSM network off, but GPRS and Edge is still working.
Hope that helps
Dunno where you are geographically, but At&t had some major down time last friday or thursday and it seemed again this week on tuesday or so.
Maybe this was effecting you? (boston area) Only time my kaiser does **** like that is when i leave something conflicting open, (mail, or a browser)
good luck

Does anyone know the significance of greyed out network icons?

I upgraded to R3A last week and so far everything's gone smoothly.
The only thing that's bugging me is that the network icon (H) spends most of its time greyed out (see screenshot). I only ever saw it in that state briefly in previous firmware.
It doesn't seem to affect connection or call quality. It's not indicative of a bad signal, as it'll still go back to 2.5G when 3G is lacking. The resulting G will usually be grey as well.
Presumably it means something's less than optimal, but I can't find any info about it anywhere.
Clues anybody?
Are you sure you are able to connect to a data connection, for web browsing etc? Because the last time this happened to me, i was not able to connect, and had to do a hard reset to get it fixed.

Data connection works fine. There appears to be no issue with functionality of anything.
The set of "custom" status icons (colored ones) doesn't contain icon for HSDPA (or something like this, dataconnection available in you location) so it is shown as standard icon (only black&white). I bet if you have only EDGE or GPRS available, there will be the same icon as the others are.
it should mean that data connection is unavailable at the moment (because it can get back in a later time) or something is wrong with your data connection (that is why we have sometimes to reset the phone to make it work back).
Guys,
I have a Xperia for almost one month, and last night it suddenly stopped to be connected with the network. I tried to connect manually, and it worked, but the calls still couldn't be done! One hour later, the same situation started again and my phone can not connect to the network.
I don't know what to do anymore, I have already hard reset the phone, and nothing happened!!
Help me!

I get exactly the same thing, running Jacks latest lite-ROM, based on the R3A. Connection icons are greyed out, but I still have an excellent data connection.
What's more is that after a fairly long call, the phone usually looks like it's in flight mode. However, if I try calling myself from my second phone it works just fine, and I can recieve sms-es. But, I cannot send texts or call out, since the phone thinks it's cell-module is turned off. This always corrects itself after a soft reset, and usually passes by itself after about ten minutes. But the connection icons stay greyed out.
If I try to turn the phone-module back on, nothing happens.
Weird, innit?

[Q] Razr I - Failing to swap to Mobile Data after Wireless Connection out of Range

Hi.
I've recently started having lots of difficulty when moving out of range of my home's wireless signal in the phone picking up and connecting to the Mobile Data network.
Specifically:
1) Run phone for ages at home using wireless
2) Walk out of house, out of range. Wireless connection goes unconneced
3) Wait for Mobile Network to connect, have at least 3 bars of signal - fails, no E/G/H Sign, Network indicator stays white ( So far waited up to 3 hours)
4) Reboot Phone, instant Mobile Network Connection @ H
Things I have tried:
1) Turning Wireless off before leaving range of wi-fi, sometimes this works ( circa 1 in 20)
2) Turning Phone to Airplane Mode & Back - sometimes this works ( circa 1 in 15 ).
Turning Airplane mode on can take about 4 minutes, as though something is waiting for a closure timeout. Normally, this takes about 5 seconds.
3) Phone calls are intermittant during this time - sometimes I can make them, sometimes i can't.
4) While in range, turn phone off/on again so a "clean" boot, then walk out of range. No affect on ability to reconnect.
Check Phone Status under About Phone, the Mobile Network States reports "Not Connected"
It's really annoying, as I want to use the phone to during breakfast to check the latest traffic information and map updates from Google Maps before I leave home, then get in the car and go, not reboot the phone.
Has anyone else suffered a similar problem?
Phone Specifics:
Motorola Razr I XT890
Android 4.1.2 Stock
T-Mobile
Is there some investigative
Thanks!
I've had exactly the same issue on/off for weeks.
Not found a reason/fix for it yet, although I've been loath to do a full wipe with how busy I am atm.

Hmm.
At least we know we are not in the same boat, and a recent forum query on Engagdet highlighted others.
I've tried to capture a bug report to give me some logs to look at, but that's not working at the moment either !
Thinking it might be an "Always On" app related problem such as sykpe or amazon mp3 :S

[Q] My mobile data disappears until I reboot

Hi XDA, I bought a Z3 Compact a few days ago, and yesterday this weird bug occured for the first time. The data is simply turned off suddenly when I check my phone, and nothing I do will turn it back on.. Toggling mobile data back and forth, searching for networks and clicking different ones, downloading internet settings again, airplane mode on/off etc. - nothing works except rebooting the phone, and then the data works again until next time it messes up. It did it again last night.
I googled the issue, and it seems some S4 users have had same problem with Android 4.4.2? Link to the issue is found here http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/70532
Apparently they report that you cant make calls either when this bug occurs, even when the phone says it has bars, however I havent tested regular calling. I will next time my device bugs out.
Has anyone experienced something similar and/or is there any way to fix it?
I had the same issue but only when Stamina mode was enabled. After a few hours I would lose mobile data and only a reboot would restore it. I cleared data for Eco Mode Controller, rebooted and the problem hasn't reoccurred since. Not sure if this helps or not.

I don't have it enabled, but I will definitely try clearing data for eco mode controller.
Also, I figured out that I can still make calls even when the data doesn't work. So it is not the same issue that is described in the link.
I think you have the same issue as described in this link? https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...sappearing-in-Stamina-mode/m-p/845155#U845155
I have had stamina mode on however, so I will try it anyway.
I believe I had the same issue as you: cell signal dying after a while, but more often when cell reception was likely to be cut off (e.g. poor service areas or stamina mode). I'm also on T-Mobile in the US.
You can try the troubleshooting steps I took in this post, but what ultimately ended up working for me was a nano-SIM swap.
If you try all of the above and still haven't managed to fix it, I would suggest a phone swap.
Edit: typo

But if the sim card was the problem, I wouldnt be able to make calls right? I mean, there must be a connection since I can call.
Also, the phone doesn't give me a notification with "No sim card" or something similar..
But then again, weird errors can happen.. I will order a new sim card if the problem persists and I am unable to find a solution

You might be right. My issue was signal, then no signal. I never got a "no SIM card" message, however.
Best of luck!
I am now getting this issue without using Stamina mode. I am currently sat at work with no data, same thing happened yesterday. It worked fine this morning but at some point it has gone and only a reboot will get it back. I am missing important notifications because of this.
It seems to happen when I move around the building and the signal goes weak. The About -> Status page currently shows:
Signal strength: -79 dBm 17 asu
Mobile network type: HSPA
Service state: Voice: In service - Data: In service
Mobile network state: Disconnected
This is so frustrating.
---------- Post added at 12:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:36 PM ----------
Just rebooted, data is back and now I see this in About -> Status:
Signal strength: -75 dBm 20 asu
Mobile network type: HSPA
Service state: Voice: In service - Data: In service
Mobile network state: Connected
Time to seek a refund.
I never got this issue fixed, even after repairing the device using PC Companion so I've sent it back to Clove for a refund. I think Bluetooth may have something to do with it though: I use BT in the car and have a Fitbit connected. I spent a day with BT disabled and the issue did not occur. I then went for a run with BT headphones connected and when I got back I had no mobile data again.
So goodbye Xperia Z3 Compact.
Anyone managed to fix it?
Hi!
I have the same issue. I use BT in my car too, but I think I lose it event without BT sometimes..
Anyone managed to fix it?
Just wanted to pitch in that I have the same problem (Z3 here).
I was going to return the phone but reading that the new lollipop update will arrive next week I think I'll hold out and see if that update won't fix it.

COPIED and PASTED for your ENJOYMENT:
I thought I’d share a quick tweak that applies to most of Sony’s Xperia Android phones. If you’re on the Three network and travel around a fair bit you’ll notice that occasionally you’ll lose the data connection and it won’t always come back until you reboot the phone. Very annoying.
This happens because Three still have some 2G roaming agreements in place for areas they don’t have coverage. That doesn’t include data roaming however and a lot of devices (including the iPhone still) have trouble with this.
The way to fix this is to set the ‘Network Mode’ to ‘4G/WCMA’. Annoyingly you can’t set this in the ‘Mobile Network Settings’ section, you’ll need to go into hidden service menu to get to the setting. From the dialler, type this:
*#*#SERVICE#*#*
'Service' is typed as you would on a T9 predictive text keyboard, so thats one key press per letter.
Once your into the service menu, choose ‘Network Mode’ and then within this menu choose ‘LTE_WCDMA’.
You’ll see the radio stack reboot (so you’ll lose your connection while it does this).
No longer shall you experience the annoying ‘data never comes back’ issue.
It goes without saying that changing this setting is at your own risk.
You should manually set your network to WCDMA/GSM first. Then do as suggested above.
The problem is that the mode will automatically fall back to whatever is set in the UI if you even load the Mobile Networks control (by simply selecting the menu item in settings). If you leave it stock, then going into mobile networks will cause it to "fallback" into the failure mode. But if you manually set it to WCDMA/GSM then going in to Mobile Networks will only cause it to fallback into HSPA+, which isn't bad.
I'm getting this exact same issue but on my galaxy s5 only a reboot will resolve it I wonder if it is also in relation to 2G networks. I am on EE and the just recently sold to BT could be that their infrastructure now includes 2G coverage with no data for some places? Soon as I reboot back on 4G. Looked in settings and annoyingly only auto ones are 2G/3G/4G and 2G/3G there is no 3G/4G auto connection type guess I need to find a Samsung secret menu?

still have the same bug with my Z3 compact, Android 6.0.1 and it is very resistent, even secure mode without 3rd party Apps, new SIM Card and new mobile phone (but with restored Sony Backup) helped. Vodafone germany and Sony Customer Care are idealess.
Last try will bei leaving SD card out and a reset with Sony companion without restoring backup
