data connection gets stuck - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

hi there
as i mentioned in the thread description, my data connection randomly gets stuck. what means that the "up"-arrow stays lightened, and i cant connect to the internet, no matter what im using (web browser, tapatalk,...).
this seems to be totaly random, since i can not reproduce it.
this always lasts like 2mins and its all fine again, after that.
as far as i can remember this only happens when using the FoyoMod (both 2.5.0 and 2.6.0) not on any cm-rom, well for as far as i can remember ...
using wifi its working without problems
and another question, but this is for sure depending on TheFroyoMod-rom: i cant download attached files with tapatalk.
my device:
[email protected] 2.6.0 (all standart: kernel, vsel, frequencies,...)
Baseband: 3GSMEPU91a_u_91.09.04I
thx in advance for replies

I used to have those problems as well. I've deduced that it might just be a dead spot. When I am at school in a certain classroom, I lose all connection and get the same symptoms that you're describing. It might be a dead spot, in which you can't really do much about that.

thanks for your reply.
but i mostly use my phone at work, and there i stay at the same spot for 8h, even if i dont move my phone it works again after a while. i still can do calls, what means i still have a signal???
there is something i found on the web, its called dns-fix which i tried to apply usind aor, but when i do so, it replies: already applied. so i guess its already integrated in cm7
Sent from my Milestone using Tapatalk

I guess it all depends on your office building as well. A lot of cement and basements make the cell signals hard to pass through, so you might be stuck. Are you able to use wifi?
When you're somewhere else, say, at home, does your 3G work properly?

its at home as well. its no congret there just shacks, but even under free air with nothing around me it happens. and yes wifi works perfectly then, it testet it at home, and also calls are able.
and like i said above the outbound traffic arrow stays lightend, just as it is somehow stuck.
well gues i just have to live with it

hrmm I experience the same thing sometimes.
I don't think this is limited just to Milestone/Droid. I have friends with Defy and Xperia X10 and they also get drop outs.
I think it must depend partially on the software (I seem to get better 3G connection under Gingerbread). Also when I restart the phone/reinstall the OS my connection comes back.
Also it probably depends on location and the cell provider.
I guess 3G is not perfect to rely on yet. Hopefully in the next couple of years it will be as reliable as ADSL! But for browsing basic stuff it works fine.

I know that one of the tricks that I've found works SOMETIMES is to turn the wifi on, then turn it off again. It seems to "wake up" the 3G and sometimes gets it back to normal.

alright then thank you for the advises

didnt worked for me. but my speed is about what they posted without editing anything in the buil.prop.
but following a post by sileshn, i flashed the latest crono rom (1.2). since that i dont get more than 600kbps down, i already tried the tweak i n the build.prop. is this just regular in this rom?
i tested somewhere, i know from previous test what speed i can get. any clue about that?

i finally found its a provider problem. i talked to several people also using o2 germany, they are having the same problems too.

[ROM-FIX] CM 6.xx, Ruby 1.1.1 and Shadowrom Radio and Wifi - Drops and Reboots Fix

Latest Cyanogenmod nightly number 97 (10/3/2010) has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch if you are running it or a newer one.
Back Story
Long story short, the Chinese group Miui mananged to get / build (not really sure) a new Radio Interface Layer for our HTC devices... I pulled this file out of the Nexus one build that they released and it works perfectly. Link to the Nexus1 version
Over in the Nexus one forum a few people have questioned where this Chinese group got some of the files they're using, as they're really bleeding edge (at least thats what they say in the N1 forum). This newer / different RIL file seems to fix the issues we're facing with random phantom reboots while wifi is on. Also included in this is the issue where the signal bars show an "x" for a second or two after connecting to a wifi hotspot. Also fixed are issues where the radio signal drops before / after receiving a call that plagues AOSP builds (ruby and CM for sure).
Cyanogenmod 6.xx
This works on the 6.xx versions as well as the Nightlies.
NOTICE: As of Oct 2nd this has been "committed" so I assume the nightly that comes out this evening will have the fix built in. Check it out
Latest nightly number 97 has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch.
Ruby 1.1.1
This works for Ruby. If you are wanting the BT Media Streaming audio fix as well, please see this thread. They are two separate installs.
Shadowrom
It has been confirmed that this also works for Shadowrom.
Bugs
I honestly don't know of any yet... but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Only a handful of us have been testing this thing out on the inc so far. Figured more people might want to check it out.
Credit
I take no credit for the fix. The Miui group built/got it(not sure which), I simply happened to be playing around with some files and noticed the side effects. Thanks again to Jermaine for letting me know more about the rom (and the fact that they weren't plagued by our reboot issues) in the first place so I could start digging...
Of course thanks go out to the entire ruby and cyanogenmod teams, without them we wouldn't have these fun roms. Lastly, IncredibleDoes for doing the Inc port of miui that opened our eyes to it.
Installation
- Download the file and place it on your SD card.
- Load up Rom Manager and hit "Install rom from SD card," select the file.
- I'd probably make a nandroid backup if you haven't recently just in case... no wipe has been needed.
Disclaimer
If this messes up your phone, not my fault Was tested by about 30 people so far, and no issues that we've seen. Please make a nandoid backup just in case.
THIS IS FOR AOSP roms listed above ONLY. Please do NOT install it on any sense based roms.

Isn't this just cosmetic? Or because the phone is switching from 3G to 1x? I've never dropped a call while toggling WiFi on...

Not that I can tell... so far the mere fact that the wifi isn't causing reboots anymore is the main reason I'm putting this out there...
anything else is just gravy.

Fixing the WiFi reboots would be great. Though, strangely, I'm at 110 hours uptime with the WiFi on... I guess it'll take a while to verify this fix works.

I really dont believe its the wifi. Its when the 3g turns on or off when the issues happen, which is when you leave or enter a wifi area. I turned 3g off and didnt use it for 2 days with wifi on the whole time with no reboots. I've have the lockup with just 3g on as others have noted. Also I believe that the lockups and the reboots are a separate issue. I have yet to see where any dev said it was the wifi directly, and with the known issues of 3g+froyo it points to 3g not wifi.
So, if you turn wifi off and are in a good 3g area then you will unlikely lose 3g much if at all, but if you have signal issues then the reboots still exist.
If we are going to find out what the problem is we need to setup test groups.
1 - no wifi, no 3g
2 - no wifi, 3g on
3 - wifi on, no 3g
4 - wifi on, 3g on
Make sure everyone is using the same rom/radio.

That's a possibility, but I think I'm in a good 3G area, and the majority of my movements are in a pretty small geographic area. I'll get reboots when my phone is just sitting on a table or in my pocket though in an area w/ strong signal.

I think what we'd really need is for the testers to check all 4 combinations. There's too much geographic variance to have a bunch of different people testing these combinations unless some lived very close to each other.

[Q] phone getting hot ?

Everytime i placed my hand on the back cover, it felt really hot. Is this normal ?
I'm currently running HoliRaidier 1.75 rom.
The phone does tend to heat up quite a bit, especially when running CPU intensive tasks.
You should use a task manager to monitor what apps are running, and terminate anything unnecessary.
Thanks - I'll try to do that.

Did you check to be sure the kernel you're using matches your ROM?
When you say 'data connection,' I'm guessing you mean mobile data connection and not wi-fi. If it is wi-fi with the problem, try re-copying the wi-fi module for your kernel over to /system/lib/modules
Yes - I do meant the 'mobile data'. When I used a custom rom, then I got the data just fine. However when I used the ATT based rom - It doesn't appear to get any connection. I don't know why, and if I would know how to set or change the custom APN would be helpful.

Edit: Yes I always flash the kernel before install new ROM from the same dev.
I have also realized that it does get hot, and with the new holliraider 1.7 i realized that the battery dies faster.

.246 First impressions

Hi all,
I upgraded from .2233 with a layover in .905... my first impressions are that the differences between 2233 and 246 are minor at best. All the problems I had before are still present from the previous ICS build and were functional in GB 905.
Problems:
1) Bluetooth audio is broken- I have a Nokia 360 bt speaker which worked perfect when streaming with GB on Bluetooth. However, both ICS builds are non-functional. Oddly the 246 wont even pair while the previous build did that but with no sound streaming.
2) That high pitch whine (in ear buds) is present when no music is playing (it goes on and off) -this was never present in the GB.
3) In-line mic controls don't work and they never worked before, even for GB but its darn annoying. The microphone doesn't work and the volume controls/center action button don't do anything beyond play pause (even though they are 3 buttons).
Its a nice ROM but its ridiculous that these small features are were never fixed.
any other issues you guys found?

One thing I don't like about it is that you can't select between using 3g and 4g like you could before. I frequently set it for 3g to save on the battery life when 4g isn't necessary.
I also had a problem with it scanning my SD card for errors and it wouldn't read it so I had to put a different one in. The funny part is that the card works on other devices but stopped working on the bionic today. It's definitely an annoyance but something I can live with.
The performance is nice though. I do have more network issues now than I had on gingerbread but as far as how fast apps open and the screen slides, its much better.

You can switch between 4G and 3G, just not the same way as before. You need to do it through the programming menu. To do this, you dial *#*#4636#*#* then select phone information, then select CDMA auto (PRL) from the preferred network type menu for 3G, and LTE/CDMA/EvDo to go back to 4G. There are also a few apps on the market that automate that, such as one called LTE On/Off, which is for the Thunderbolt, but also works on the Bionic.
Thanks for the information. I have one other question. Is there anyway to get the desktop Firefox browser onto webtop like gingerbread had?

I haven't had any BT issues, but the headphone whine has been back with the ICS leaks, since 232, at least.
Ive yet to experience any whining
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
Coming from 232, this isn't too different feeling. My phone is running smoother but that may also be due to wiping everything as well. The set up screens were a bit different and I liked it. I haven't used headphones yet so I'm not sure if the whine is still here but I'm assuming it will since, as far as I have heard, it's hardware.

You'll have to search for that. You may be right, but I try not to use one-click roots. I actually do in and perform the steps these utilities do so I know it's done right, and I learn something in the process. However, it is really easy to root either way so don't let that deter you from loading 246. :good:

[Q] loss of network when leave my house

Hello I have recently got a samsung galaxy ace and have installed a couple of custom roms, i saw a thread for one of them to sort out the gps config, i tried to follow the instructions properly but did not find them very clear. I left the house the other day and discovered that as soon as i walk out the door of where i live my network disappears and is very intermittent if on at all. I have since reverted back to stock rom and installed cm7 rc3 democracy custom rom which is working perfectly at home but yet again when i leave the house it does the same thing and the signal just goes. I usually had poor signal in my house before but now this is the only place it works! I have looked on so many different threads but cannot seem to find the solution could someone please help me in the right direction to resolve this thanks

Stranfe Wifi problems

Hello,
I hope someone can help.
I got a Z1, with slow WiFi, but wait! It is not that simple! Everytime I change something in WiFi settings in my Frit.Box, I get one day full speed. Than after everything rebooted. It slows down to around 20Kbs up to 2Mb.
I first thought it is my crappy Fritz Box. So I tried out the Dlink DIR-600. Which, oh wonder, does the same. So root cause: It is the Z1.
After a day off, my WiFi is like in the dark age.
AND NO: Only two or three other Networks
And no: No wall, i can stand 1m behind the box.
Anyone got any tips or know why this might happen?
Edit: I´m thinking to give CM a try if it might fix the WiFi issue?
Well, i have a similar problem like yours. Z1 drops from my router all the time and the connectivity sucks!
Maybe we should use ROMs to fix it
