<obsolete now> my opinion about getting XTC Clip JUST ONLY to get S-OFF for IS ASAP
Hi,
I'm writing this, because I get the feeling some of us are considering buying the XTC Clip JUST because they want to get S-OFF asap (like me ).
Fist I must say that I don't want to shed a bad light on this tool.
I really think that it's definitely a great product!
It does support many / all* (*by future updates) HTC phones and provides "hardware" s-off + unlock.
However, for the clip to work with a newer device such as the Incredible S, the XTC Clip needs to first get an update that supports this specific model.
That's another plus for the XTC Clip, since support for it seems to be great.
They release frequent updates for newer phones and HBOOT versions, which come for free and having read a bit in the official forums it seems to me that they really care about their customers in that if there are problems, they help you out and even help you if you got problems with some shops where you bought the item.
BUT, and that's only my point of view, which might prove to be wrong, I really got the feeling by now, that the XTC Clip update for our IS won't be publicly available BEFORE there's another method for getting our device S-OFF.
I came to that conclusion when I read posts with some explanations for why the update hasn't been released yet.
Raskal says it depends on the market situation and also mentions he probably won't release it before someone else (competing products) does.
So these products, the XTC Clip and the "others", are widely used for sim unlocking the phones.
But those competing products are not able to do the same "hardware" S-OFF which only the XTC Clip is capable of.
They can only do it when there's a software hack available.
Also when you take a look at the update history of the XTC Clip for android phones, you'll see that new devices were added only AFTER there was a "software" S-OFF hack released.
For example the HTC Glacier and the Ace were both added at the very end of December, while it was possible to s-off both of them since early November.
The HTC Espresso was able to get s-off since December, while the update for the XTC Clip was released in January.
While it seems that totally NEW models are added only after another method to get S-OFF has been discovered, there are also (later) HBOOT versions of some devices, which are still impossible to S-OFF while the XTC Clip can do it!
An example is the HTC Legend, where the XTC Clip is capable to s-off even hboot 1.1.
I really hope that I'm wrong, but I have cancelled my order and I'll definitely wait and not buy the Clip until an update is released that supports the Incredible S and even then I'll buy it ONLY IF by that time there's still no software s-off hack released.
After all I'm not interested in sim unlocking or selling any services based upon that device. But that's just me.

Nice opinion, But i have a question. If u get a software s-off from some1 like unrevoked, what exactly is the need to buy an xtc clip. Idon need a sim unlock. My fone never had one. So only reason i would buy one is for s-off, which i cant do anyway cuz im only 15.
Btw, a little off topic. If i open my brand new, sealed and untouched IS package box, and i find that is does not have a sim lock, does this mean it might not be s-on ? How can i check?

XTC Clip can do much more than just S-OFF your phone. For example debrand, sim unlock and when there are newer HBOOT versions released which can't be S-OFFed it seems likely XTC Clip will be able to do it.
S-OFF and sim unlock are different things.
If you bought your phone in a retail store and didn't get it from your carrier provider it's not sim locked.
If you got it from your carrier provider I don't know how to check if it's sim locked other than inserting a sim card from another provider and check.
But maybe it's also possible to check somewhere in the bootloader/fastboot, I don't know..

Hmmm... I see ... Do you kno how to open the bootloader ? Something like power button + volume up ... I want to see what it says ... Maybe mine is unlocked like that dude over at the other thread ... I wanna check ...
EDIT : nvr mind ... Saw ur answer on the other thread... Thnx bro ... Ill check now ...

Don`t bother with XTC CLIP guys !!!
I bought it just recently and it WON`T work with INC S !!!!! The reason being the seller does not feel like releasing the unlock yet........ eventhough we paid a fee to purchase it.....
I repeat , I have the INC S and I bought the XTC Clip for unlocking the INC S, but it will NOT work, so don`t waste your money like I did ........
Any can PM me and I can show you the proof why it`s not working !!!!

Can some1 clear somethn up for me? Is s-on what we call nand lock?

I think it's because the cat and mouse game played
mabey raskal won't put his cards to early on the desk
just to prevent htc from taking countermeasure in a early stage.
and I say the clip is a killer so be patient and relax

Where did you read, that the xtc-clip can get you s-off on Incredible S?
Was it promised? No. So dont buy it and complain it cannot do it.
I certainly wont buy a car and complain that it cannot fly ...

Of course it WILL work! It already does, it's just a matter of time.

BTW: when I'm not mistaken the Wildfire can't be software S-OFFed anymore since the new update, but XTC Clip can
So also if it's not the real purpose of this great tool, for people like me who would just use it to S-OFF their phones, it might still prove useful when newer HBOOT versions get released

If you read the forums the owner of XTC CLIP published everywhere his XTC CLIP can succesfully turn Inc S, S-OFF.....since mid March.....
I am fed up with this issue ....anyway
As of yet , XTC CLIP is NOT working, how I know it ? because I own one.
Yes for sure it will work sometime, but when that time comes I will be already using my HTC Sensation or HTC Evo 3D or both .....

How you know it works ? Do you have one ? Nope , so you just assume it works because Raskal tells you guys it works.
Secondly, if it`s really working , it`s a matter of time for you guys because , Raskal asked you guys to PUBLISH and UPLOAD 50 NEW videos of XTC CLIP unlocking otherwise he threated you all he will NOT release the unlock .
Well I am not like some people and will never suck up to somebody especially if I already paid for something, we`re not getting this XTC CLIP for free, we paid for it so why need to suck up and upload 50 new videos ....
As I said, ofcourse XTC CLIP will work sometime , but that time there will be also other methods to S-OFF the Inc S ...

That's simply not true at all!! Where did he ever say that? He just offered to release the update immediately i.e. "sooner" if people worked together and make some videos for the support forum.
He never said that he will only release it if/when there are 50 new videos.
Quite the opposite is true. He promised to release the update (multiple times). And that was regardless if there will be 50 new videos or not.
50 movies sounds a bit much, but it isn't. Just imagine those customers running shops, or at least using the Clip commercially (most of them are). It's easy for them to make some movies as they get a hold of many mobiles + it doesn't take much time.
However he will release the update anyhow.
Now he's talking about 2days to 2 weeks for the update to be released together with a new product launch.

Look my friend , you sound like a young and passionate guy and please learn some facts of life from us, more experinced guys.
1) You should never ever believe what you hear from other people and announce it as REAL without verying it !!!!!! This is one of the biggest mistakes made in the business life.
You are saying: He that, He this, He said, He will, He would have, He might
As you can see those are not CERTAIN because you hear from somebody in this virtual world wide web , but what I am saying is CERTAIN,
because I own one and it`s not working as of yet !!!
So people should not waste this money hoping one day , you guys will publish new 50 videos in Youtube so that he will release the S-OFF for the INC S, ......
The guy is clever as I told you in the other forum link and this link , he knows it`s not easy to upload 50 brand new videos on Youtube and etc because :
On the XTC Clip Users manual it says that.....
The XTC CLIP can NOT be used if :
- that the phone is ROOTED,
- that the phone has a COOKED ROM
- that the phone has NOT it's original RADIO.
- the phone is connected to computer via usb cable
Can you tell me who would have a phone that fits outside of this category , therefore the 50 new videos will never be completed !!! You need Virgin phones for this XTC Clip to work...... Somebody said , if you flash everything back to it`s original state, it will work, OK, who`d spend time to flash back to original of his phone and take a video for the XTC CLIP ?
Ok you`re a snowboarder and you goto your nearest car dealer and buy yourself a brand new 4x4 SUV to drive you to the mountains., when you drive the car to the mountains, you realise that this car is only 4x2 , then goto your dealer and ask him WTF ? What would you do if the seller says , sorry, producer decided to NOT add the 4x4 into this car although this car is a SUV and mentioned 4x4, and the producer will add 4x4 sometime, so just go and post NEW videos of this car in Youtube and if producer get enough videos uploaded then we will add the 4x4 into the car.
Also do not forget that , it`s me who pushed him to release the S-OFF for the INC S, if it wasn`t me, you all would be still asking, "Dear Your Highness, Sir, Master Raskal, when will you release the INC S , S OFF" I am the only reason he is pushed and then he said that he has a new idea , why don`t you guys publish 50 news videos for me.
The seller himself announced in many forums that his XTC CLIP can succesfully S-OFF the Inc S but in reality it does not , ue to seller not releasing the unlock as of yet for an unknon reason to us.....
Same story .....
That`s the reason I am pissed , I don`t want to talk about this subject , this is probably my last message on this topic , unless somebody pushes me to into replying.. People should learn from their mistakes and move on !!!

I will do my best to learn of your wisdom
But in the meanwhile:
Take a look at the Update log for the XTC Clip. It was exactly the same each time a new smartphone was released.
Most of the time a (s-off) hack was discovered FIRST and soon after that, the update was released.
Why do you think it will be different this time and there won't be an update?

a) First and foremost, this really has nothing to do with development, it belongs in the general forum.
b) The XTC clip does not unlock the Incredible S because is not yet supported. It may be supported in a future update.
Arguing about it won't help but using a device to bypass the log certainly doesn't belong in the dev forum.

Do a nandroid, flash with an official rom, use the clip, apply update.zip to get into clockwork, nandroid, done;
However, from your side of view, you wouldn't need the Clip anyway when you already got root

BIG Problem With My DiAAMONDDD!!

Hi im finished here
i bought my diamond from 1 week ago and its locked .. anyway i unlocked it and started to use it .. but after while issues have came up clearly .. the end key light is always on and never turn off .. also its over heated it really burns my hand when i hold it .. and once i open the backside cover and i removed the stylus and stick it near the magnet .. and guess what .. it came off .. all these problems on a new diamond used for only 1WEEK !!
i returned the device to the HTC Service Center .. and they gave me a letter to give it to the shop which i bought the diamond from .. when i went to them they said u lost the warranty cuz u unlocked it .. !! im not even satisfied with this device i hate it !!
i know u cant do somthing here but i love this forum and just wanted to remove this pain from my chest and get some suggestions from u ..
Sorry to ask... but which ROM did you put in after unlocking it? The magnet is fixable with some pasting stuff (be careful not to use something to abrassive, or you might melt the plastic).
Have you Hard Reset the phone after unlocking it?
Once the device works properly, you ain't gonna hate it.
Did you followed ALL THE NECESSARY steps to unlock it safely? Have you let the device near a source of heat and/or moist?
Which RADIO is installed? Which version is you Diamond? AUS, EUR, USA?
Calm down and describe the whole scenario. It's the only way the all-seeing eyes from xda can look properly into your problem.
Needless to say: the fact that you loose your warranty is a well known risk of having the device unlocked.
It took me a long 2 week period to dismiss any possible tech fault, and THEN I started RESEARCHING into unlocking.
As I live in Argentina, mine came already flashed, so that was easy on me to take the risk. But even then, I took all the possible cautions. Of course I'd be mad if something like that happened.

you automatically lose your warranty on ANY phone when you change your unlock your cell phone or tamper with the original software.
Try again but first flash official ROM and SPL.
I'm glad I could help you, a little at least.
Unlocking, HardSPL'ing and such UNofficial stuff are warranty breakers.
It's supposed to be updated with Official ROMs (dwnldd from HTC home)
AFAIK you can't brick your phone without having a large ammount of mistakes.
If you want a new one, re-flash it with the official branded ROM that came with your phone... and try to get the old spl back in... (I dunno if that's possible...)
That way you might be able to pass it as a broken one... the resellers should take it back, because they will have to send it overseas... physical damage to the phone should be repaired nevertheless.
The best luck with this, pal. Hope you don't end up stressed up.

If the warranty is voided as in this case it means the manufacturer can refuse repair wether it be a software fault or any physical damage.

[Q] WHY can't the Nexus One bootloader be re-locked?

I understand that currently it cannot be relocked on it has been unlocked. But I would like to know why if anyone knows?
Would it be possible in the future?
And is there anyone working on this now?
There is no real reason to want to work on figuring it out.
The only reason would be to cheat on your warranty. And HTC is actually honoring all the hardware related warranty cases.
So no good reason to re-lock, and thus no real reason for devs to work hard on figuring it out.
Mine can be
Obviously that doesn't help you much though. To be able to lock it again, you need to know how to set S-OFF, which is something that (as it stands) can't be done.
Just wondering but if HTC honors the warranty on a phone with unlocked bootloader, why do the 2 different guides to rooting say one will void warranty (unlocking bootloader) and one will preserve the warranty (the one-click app)?
By law HTC can refuse to support but they are supporting for some strange reason. The disclaimers are there to warn that HTC could stop supporting at any time if they see unlocked bootloaders.
I think re-locking the bootloader is quite possible... the only problem at this point is... we don't know how... it could be a software or hardware hook, but ATM, no one knows...
And I don't believe anyone is eagerly trying to find this since HTC seems to be honouring hardware warranty even with unlocked bootloaders...
It is the price of doing business
Once the boot-loader is unlocked you can do things to your phone like over-clock the cpu or run the flash at super-bright for hours. In other words, you can do things that could damage your phone that would not be HTC's fault ... therefore they shouldn't be held liable.
So instead of just locking the phone down like most of the phones out there, HTC/Google give you a choice: Stay stock or unlock with one command. If you choose to unlock they they don't have to honour their warranty because you could be doing bad things to your phone.
The fact that they give us the choice is one of the reasons I bought this phone. The fact that they are honouring the warranties even when you unlock is extra nice of them.
Long story short: Unlocking is a sign that you've been messing with your phone and that is all it is. It is irreversible by design and there is no reason to reverse it.
It is not irreversable by design, HTC can do it.
Besides, unlocking the bootloader is not a pre-requiste to any of the things you listed above anymore (aside from FRG33 users, anyway).

My money is on a special hardware device that HTC uses that force-flashes the entire rom on the phone. With out the special hardware, I am betting there is no way to do it.
But like others said, who cares. There is no point in putting effort in to something so irrelevant.
That's what I assumed, 'til I noticed my phone was S-OFF after being repaired.
Looks like something along those lines, just got my device back yesterday from having the power button fixed and its locked again. now that we have one click root i can now load CM6 without unlocking it again.

Yeah thee only reason would be to cheat my warranty. but im glad to here that HTC has been honoring a lot of your guy's warranty's anyways.
To be honest a lot of manufactures dont fix the product, they just give you a new one anyways. so they made not even notice. right now im having a hardware issue with the trackball (i bought it on eBay :[ ) and i want to send it in but idk if i should??

Sorry to hear, for me it never came up as a question. With you, since both are broken they probably assumed it was caused by software and wrote you off.
I would say keep trying they should be at least let you send it in, and then let you know if it truly is out of your warranty and give you a price to fix.
New phone :d
Called HTC and got some of the best customer service of my life. Told them my trackball wasnt working properly anymore and they are sending me a brand new phone with next day shipping. Never asked once about it being unlocked.
So it seems as you guys are right, as long as it isnt an issue that could be caused my unlocking and messing with you phone they will still honor your warranty.
BEST THING THO...I get to keep the battery, and i bought my phone used for 450 and now im getting a brand new phone
Just so you know OP. I unlocked my Boot loader, but my phone had hardware problems. So I called them, they said they would send out a replacement, next day I cancelled it for reasons I am not going to get into detail over. Well they replacement arrived and my card hold was realized, so I got two nexus's Think I am going to call them and still send the bad one back anyways though.
Moral HTC is has superb warranty!

Has anyone heard of or tried an HTC Dongle?

On the website for this product, http://www.htcdongle.com/news.php , it says that the device can be used to flash, unlock and soff the Incredible S. If you go into their forum, you will find that this capability was just added last week for the Vivo. It looks like it can be used to repair IMEI numbers as well. If you find a store that sells it, it costs $119.
If it works as advertised, it seems like a pretty good deal. So does anyone have any first hand experience with one of these?
hmm, i never heared of it, better stick with xtc, also since the payg is comin so much cheaper..
and tbh i dont believe this as well, since i havent seen an video of actually disabling the security aka s-off on an device
and how would you connect it to your phone?
as far as i know you can only s-off an device trough fakin a dev-simcard (when its hardware based)

You don't connect it directly to your phone. It's a dongle. You just plug it into your PC and plug your phone into your PC and the software you install detects the dongle and the phone. At least that's how I understand the instructions posted on their forum.
I find thisproduct interesting because I'm interested in the IMEI repair functionality aspect. As far as I know the XTC Clip doesn't offer that option.
But if HTC unlocks their bootloaders before I actually buy my next phone, it won't matter as I won't need it. I just wanted to put this out here to see if anyone had tried it and to show there are other options available.

"indirect way" means software way.. and software could be/looks like exploit
is it or not?
xtc clip emulates dev sim card with hardware connected.
and btw with xtc payg only 25-30 euros you're way too expensive for the simple user right now..

I should say its 80% hardware nd 20% software.. htc dongle also emulates dev sim card.. unlike xtc the connection between the dongle nd the fon is through the software.. we should connect our fon to the same pc wid the usb plug.. the software helps the fon to connect to the dongle virtually.. rest is same as xtc.. hope this cleared out ur question
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
a dongle cant act as a simcard
why?
because its not in the simcard slot.... so unless theres a actual simcard placed and you call this not a software hack i call it a ghost story

Wow. Following the HXCDongle, formerly the HTCDongle, forum tells me that this works. I don't need to understand how it works. I have decided to not get an Incredible S though and am waiting for them to support the HTC Sensation 4G before buying one. It looks like the price has gone down on the HTC Dongle at ipmart.com, probably because of the name change and trying to get rid of old stock. This just seems like a better deal then the XTC clip so I don't know why it hasn't gotten a better following.
lol, you should search further.... alpharevx is gonna supply software for s-off
Assuming the dongle write some sort of unlock code to the sim card? And when inserted into the phone, the code is read and executed by the bootloader, as the sim card is "trusted" by the bootloader??

XTC Clip: Help - How to use on Incredible S ?

Please, I need help with XTC Clip.
I bought my HTC Incredible S last week, but it is H1.16 boot.
So, I just bought an XTC Clip to unlock my HTC, I'll get it tomorrow, and would like someone to direct me how to use, to turn my HTC S-OFF, and root it.
Help will be very important, thank you for your attention.
Details: be my first experience with XTC Clip, do not understand anything about the topic and I'm afraid of breaking my HTC. Please ask for detailed help.
Thanks.
u bought a xtc clip without even knowing how to use it?
smart
It is easier for me to learn to use, rather than wait 10 days for an order that comes from China, is not it?
And from what I've been reading, it is not difficult to use XTC, he does it all "almost" alone.

here, a simple google of "how to use xtc clip" could've provided you answers

SIM/SD-CARd Board - Can a HTC Desire Boartd be used?

The story is that my SIM/SD-CARD board went due to water damage some 8 months or so ago.
I sent it to a distributor that supports HTC products but they said the N1 was not a product on their list.
I am thinking rather than having this brick that can't read SIM or SD-Cards, I would prefer it working and give it to my child. I know both the mic and phone listening points work.
So I am wondering if I can tell the HTC distributors to replace the SIM/SD-CARD board on my N1 with an HTC Desire one (which they support) at my own risk if it does not work? I know the phones have similarities. But is this board one of them?
In the meanwhile I am getting myself ready for a DIY by looking at ifixit.com.
edit - that must be some of the worst threat title work
