[Q] Nook Color can't run certain apps that shouldn't require cell network, but do? - Nook Color General

I don't know if this is a problem related to the recent patch for ROM Manager, but I upgraded that app and it didn't fix it, so...
Anyway, I have two apps giving me fits right now:
Amazon's new MP3 Cloud player for Android, and "Good (for Enterprise)", which is a corporate email reader.
Both apps complain that my cell network isn't enabled. Both apps should work find over WiFi, and they are communicating with their servers in some capacity, because they are able to tell the difference between a valid login and an invalid one. But once I enter a valid login, they both complain that I need to enable my cell network.
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm on WiFi, and I can connect to Amazon's web page fine. But when I login to the app using my amazon account, it complains about not being connected to a cell network. Why would it care if I'm on wifi?

Do you have the phone.apk telephony.apk and mms.apk renamed or removed by chance? The app could just be looking for those.

Ahhhhh, I see...
You mean like this thread?

I haven't done anything like this on purpose. I'm running the stock ROM with eclair and rooted via autonooter. Can I check for them using a file manager or ADB?

Ran into the same problem when I tried running the Yelp app on my Nook Color. Kept crashing on the install. After passing emails and logs back and forth with Yelp it turns out it crashing when it's looking for a phone, even though I'm on wifi.
He said they'd fix it in the next major release.

[Q] How does one set local country in any ROM?

Hi there.
Question: Custom ROMs not from Canada do not show Canadian only apps such as TD Mobile app (bank app). How does one set the local country so that the Market can detect the proper country?
I recently downloaded Rodrigaz MIUI ROM, and it's really great, except now I can't find my TD Mobile app. I called the bank and said that my phone or phone software is has to be set for Canada. Somehow if I flash my stock ROM it will show Canadian only apps, but some of these ROMs don't.
You're help is appreciated.
-Havoc
I have no problem finding the app using Cyanogen. The Market finds the app based on the fact that I use a Canadian Sim. However the TD app is also protected, which means you won't find it if the fingerprint in your build.prop isn't on Google's white list.
That being said, while you're figuring this out, you can access TD's mobile banking at this URL:
tinyurl.com/tdtouch
Bookmark it

Use Market Access.
Well if I use Cyanogen or the Desire HD port, it not only shows the canadian TD app but also shows the prices in canadian funds with a CA symbol. But any MIUI roms don't. I figured it might be a setting in the build.prop that I could change, but I lack the knowledge of locating such property.

Market Access won't let you see protected apps. TD is a protected app.

Try searching for some of the following protected apps:
Fruit Ninja
A Online Radio
Paperdroid Pro
(not sure if they are still protected but they were the last time I checked)
Do you see any of them? If not, your problem is with protected apps, not with location.
In any case, one simple solution to test: Next time you're trying out Cyanogen, make a backup of the build.prop. Rename your MIUI build.prop to build.bak and paste in the one from CM6. Fix the permissions to what they were before. Then reboot and see what you get in the Market.
Thanks for the reply, I searched for these apps and they're there. About the build.prop, wouldn't mixing from another rom have compatibility issues?

It could be a problem, don't know. There's only one way to find out... I say take a nandroid backup of your status quo before making the changes. If it fails to boot you can do a nandroid restore.
Strange that you see protected apps but not TD. The standard method of identifying your country for the Market is usually based on the SIM. Maybe MIUI overrides this.
I tried using Cyanogen's build.prop file today and it still doesn't show the TD mobile app
I'm at a loss.
Okay well at least there's a workaround: install it from Cyanogen, Titanium Backup, and restore that app to MIUI
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Oh, you mean adb pull it from there? I can try that.
I thought I'd mention that a lot of Google search results seem to point to a "fingerprint" or "footprint" feature of the software to indicate what region/country, which is what them protected apps seem to look for. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
You may not be able to adb pull the TD app from your CM6 or stock installation as it's a protected app. But when you back up a protected app with Titanium, it transforms it into an unprotected .apk file... if you reinstall it using Titanium from MIUI it will go back into protected space; or you can browse to the folder and manually install the apk, which will install it as an unprotected app.

[Q] Issue with Marketplace - Google Talk unable to Authenticate

Hello,
I'm running into an issue with my rooted NookColor. I ran AutoNooter last night, no problems there. Now that I've bound my Google account to YouTube, I can sync GMail with no problems. The issues start when I try to go to the marketplace and download an app. I select the app, and on the downloads screen it hangs at Starting Download. If I go to the Google Talk app, it tries to login, and then after a few minutes I get a notification that Authentication has failed.
Any ideas?
I'm having the same problems with the Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 room... Any ideas?
This worked for me:
Go to settings/applications/manage application (choose all). Scroll to google services framework, press on it and select clear data/force stop. Then go to market and clear cache. Reboot, all should be well.

Talk.apk going offline official froyo

I use google's Talk a lot and I depend on it heavily for communication. But I find it trying to sign in when I turn it on to send a message. This gives me reason to believe that may be when I go to a part of my building where there are not wifi or data connections, Talk goes offline. But it should sign back in when there is data connection, right?
I think, not sure, Talk goes offline after the phone has been in sleep for a while as well.
People are complaining often that they see me offline (not away) in google talk.
Is there anyway I can make Talk stay connected 24/7?
I'm on official UK Froyo. I have uninstalled the stack launcher (replaced with AWD launcher), email and a few insignificant apps I never use.
I do have app2ext workings as well but I do not believe app2ext has anything to do with the Talk issue since it has been going on for a while and in a range of roms including Cronos, CyanogenMod, FroyoMod and MIUI not to mention stock froyo for MM.

Unrooting ICS rom - bad idea?

Hello all,
I am currently running Slim ICS on my captivate and have a question. My new job allows me to install McAfee Mobile to connect to my corporate email server. Only issue is it won't install on a 'rogue' (I.e. rooted) (their words, not mine) device.
My question is, would it adversely effect me to unroot my device? I realize things like root explorer and titanium backup won't work, but are there any deeper implications other than loosing access to those apps?
Lastly, from what I've looked at the one click unrooting apps won't work if busy box is installed, or something lime that. Slim ICS comes with busy box, is that an issue? If so are there other procedures I can follow?
Or perhaps I need to return to stock. I'm wondering if corporate email is worth it...
I know CM9 allows you to disable it through settings. I can't think of any implications whatsoever. I feel like there's a way to trick the app into thinking you're not rooted. Pretty sure it's been done before
Sent from my SGH-I897
I think you will need unrooted stock. Which sucks. Do you travel and need to see your email while off WiFi? Is your laptop too heavy? I use only Calendar syncing - for reminders and dialing up to calls. Emails and Gmails are too painful to view and read.
The primary reason for me wanting to do this is so I can sync my calendar... As events come up at work I would love to just throw them into Outlook and have them show up on my phone, or vice-versa.
I tried to install Google Sync on my work computer but alas it was denied as I was not an administrator. Perhaps I just have to suck it up and try to put things in both my Outlook and Google calendars.... Unless someone has any other suggestions?
If you cannot sync with Google - you are screwed. Still check any portable apps which don't need install.
Stock ROM is not bad. As long as you have "Unknown source" checked and can have any apps...

Have you tried that app, I think it's ota root keeper or something like that. It can disable root temp, and bring it back when you're done

I'll take a look, however my guess would be this app constantly monitors whether or not a device is rooted. I may just go back to stock or give up completely, lol.
Most of these kind of apps just look for the su app. Remove that and they often work, which I think is basically what ota root keeper does

"This item is not compatible with your device."

So I've tried to install a variety of different apps that I know are compatible with my device and all the google play store responds with is "This item is not compatible with your device." The most recent is nVidia TegraZone which should install considering it's a Tegra3 Device. Anybody else having this issue and/or found any fixes?
I've side loaded several apps like that which end up working fine. Basically, I download the app to a rooted phone, use titanium backup to backup the app, then download it to the N7 and enjoy.

Thanks. Worked very nicely.
I would really like it if I could just to some small hack to not have to worry about doing this though...
Anything that requires a camera permission is incompatible, including Grocery King which really annoys me as I use it for all of my shopping. Barcode Scanner, Google Goggles, etc...
Luckily LoseIt, calorie tracker, CAN use a camera but on my N7 it installed just fine just doesn't have the barcode scanning option. This is how apps should be written. For example, Google Goggles can be used on existing photos, or even photos taken with the camera hack from modoco.
In the past I've also have problems with apps that require Send/Read SMS, but I haven't noticed any of those yet.
What apps are you seeing incompatible?
For some reason the good Ameritrade one doesn't even show up in Play, but it side loaded fine for me. Had to side load Firefox as well.

I have App Backup & Restore automatically backing up the APK's from everything I installed on my Sensation. So I downloaded those, uploaded to the Nexus and installed OK. The only one I haven't made work is Dropbox.
They should just say, "App shows as being partially incompatible with your device. Install anyway?"
Hate forced to side load an app just because I'm blocked.

What would be nice if they'd say WHY so you don't have to guess. Also, that way you can email the dev and say "Market says your app won't install because of reason "555: No camera permission" or something.

It didn't for me and it wouldn't open after side-loading either. It's working now but I can't remember what I did to make it work. I think I had to side-load, then go to Accounts and add an account before opening the app for the first time.
