Keep in mind this will be my first time. i mainly want to customize & add ROMs to my phone. THANK YOU in advance!

Look at the stickies in this very forum. Search is your friend.

can you give me a specific link?
i found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717416&highlight=Root+Sprint+Hero
But my phone runs 2.32.651.2

Z4Root works from my experience, Also super one click root works. Make sure you install busybox and superuser app from the market otherwise you won't know if you're really rooted and it wont seem you are. After that go and get ROM Manager and flash CWM (you'll know what im talking about when you get there). From there you can snoop around the development forums and grab tons of stuff with step by step guides to tweak and modify your phone to perfection

G1 Problems and ROM Questions...

Hey guys and gals. I'm new here but I did have a few questions.
Right now my G1 is giving me problems. Here is the scenario. I have loaded into my phone the OpenHome with the Aero theme, BetterCut, Font-Games font pack, and the Icon pack for Aero. Once I set OpenHome to only use 3 screens, I get a force close error. Then, if I were to shut off the phone and then restart it, it hangs on the Android screen (the new one since I already have the cupcake loaded into my phone).
Has anyone had this problem? Any work arounds to fix it?
I was also thinking of rooting my phone to see if that would fix my problems.
Which ROM would you recomend for me to use? and what are the pros and cons for each. Not looking to the Rosie or Sense UI rom yet, but the basic Cupcake rom.
Thanks
This post is in the wrong section as this is for development only.
If you do root your mobile, I would currently suggest Cyanogen's ROM as its up to date, stable and has some cutting edge stuff inside. The theme is also sleek and lightweight without any real modifications to make it look like Hero etc.
XDA timeout - double post.
Thanks for you help.
And my bad about the double post. I'll be chillin in the penalty box if anybody needs me.
Don't worry about it, the double post was by me as XDA struggles with the amount of users hitting the forum ^_^ There's a new Q&A section for the Dream so you can post questions and that which are not related to the development of Android. Unless its a specific ROM issue usually the posts go there.
Hope the rooting and the use of the ROM of your choice goes well!
One last question.
Where can I find specific directions on how to root my phone for the very first time?
I've located a few things but keep getting errors when I try to install the ROM?
Thanks for all your help

Indeed, its a decent thread of which I hope still gets updated. I've also had it in my signature too, to help raise the awareness of such an FAQ.
I'm looking around and not seeing anything concerning Non-rooted phones already running cupcake (Build CRB43).
Will I have to downgrade to RC29 in order to begin rooting my phone?
And is that possible even though I'm running the latest version of Android (ver1.5)?
Good question! I didn't see that you had 1.5 OTA running as it wasn't stated in your original post so we assumed you were running on 1.1. I just quickly read that you wanted a basic cupcake ROM...
You would have to downgrade yeah if you want to obtain ROOT and thus enabling you to flash custom ROMs and other goodies.
Yes, you have to downgrade to RC29 and it can be done with the latest version of the phone software. Follow the directions they already posted. It's reasonably straightforward. There's even a video guide on youtube so you can see what the various screens look like.

noob question from iphone user

I have a few noob questions about rooting on cdma hero. these questions also might other people who are totally new to this. Please answer the questions in most basic english, thank you.
1. what can you do after you root the CDMA hero?
2. pertaining to 1st question, since CDMA hero sprint is somewhat different from original hero, after rooting can you do the same things on CDMA hero sprint has the other htc hero?
3. Is there something similar to installous and cydia on the hero/andorid?
4. getting the "free" apps from websites/torrents/or other means, will it work on cdma hero. to clarify the question, since most apps are listed as for dream and other andorid, will it work for CDMA hero?
5. when you dowloand the free apps how do you install it on to your phone (i know this question is prob answered on the forum but if someone wouldn't mind explaining it in a simple way then it would be appreciated.)
6. also the openhome or ahome i think, what is the difference to root and add themes then use one of those programs. assuming you download the program from the web.
7. what is difference between a rom and theme?

1.) all sorts of things! (http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Why_Root)
2.) There are some differences but it's all the same for the most part (the main differences are what ROMs and Recovery Images you can use)
3.) There's no need for Cydia on the hero/android since you can install apps direct from the web or anywhere by default (just checkbox: Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources).
4.) You can download apps direct from the web just fine, see above. Some apps are coded specifically to take advantage of other models but they usually will say so...and if it doesn't work, you can just uninstall it from the app manager.
5.) When you download a free app, you just run it and it installs (If that doesn't work, you may need a file manager, I use Astro file manager from the market)
thanks for info!

6 & 7. Themes change the look of your UI. They are not permanent things and can be removed at any time with no problem or messing with backups etc. Roms are what you need root for. Roms can fully change code inside of the phone and can extend functionality past what you can usually do ie(stock roms cant wifi tether but the custom rom can). Roms are harder to get rid of though and to go back to what it was before you have to restore your phone to a previous state. Its all up to what you think you need.

Recently Rooted moto Droid Question

Hey everyone,
I recently rooted my moto droid and was wondering now that I have done this can I drop 1.5 or any other OS on there that I choose? Also, if that is possible can someone post a link or tell me how to go about doing this. That being said, I was also wondering if there is a way to easily switch between android versions for development.
Thanks for your time and help,
Tommy
Here is a link to droidforums. It has links to most rooted Tom's for Droid.

You can also try other sites like alldroid.org, phandroid. The developers site which is "xda" and "sdx". There are many others so just search around they all have forums for different devices for this information. One of the most helpful I've found for noobs was unlocked.com. give it a try.

Look-up RomManager in the marketplace if you will be moving between versions alot, it handles these changes very well.
As to going to previous versions I can not say for sure. In theory yes but you will ether have to find a pre-made Droid rom or build it yourself.
Thanks!
Thank you both for the replies and information. I will continue my research and see what I can dig up. Hopefully I can find a 1.5 rom as building it myself is a little out of my ability right now.
Yes rom manager would be a good idea forgot to mention it. It works great for switching roms I just have a little problem with mount sdcard in clockworkmod recovery so mine will reboot after entering recovery and rom manager doesn't help some times but it seems to work great for most devices. My problem is I have to reformat sdcard because I came from Eris and I don't want to till I can get a computer to backup info on it.

[Q] Which ROM gives me just a fast phone?

I have a HTC Hero (sprint) and have the latest Android OS on it (latest that sprint provides). The phone as you all know has gotten very slow.
I need to update the ROM to get a faster phone. My only requirement is that when I am doing phone operations this ROM should be fast and not get stuck.
Please let me know what you guys recommend. I really appreciate it.
THanks
I recommend you learn how to read, that will give you the answers (any gingerbread ROM should do). Also I recommend you learn WHERE to post a thread (this should be in q+a, NOT in development).

BOOM... you've been DUCED!!
I truly recommend you RUU back to Android 1.5. The OS truly was a lighterweight Android version back then. You should use set cpu up as well once you root. You can get it free since you registered with xda. Also, setting min and max cpu speed in there can really help save battery. set Min and Max both to 176 Mhz and you will have battery for about a week. My $.02.

Id recommend to get adb devices recognized before you root and then use super one click to actually root it.
Its easy and easy to unroot. And plus you have adb so you can use that great stuff later

how to root phone

My galaxy note kernel version is DXLC2 (malaysia)
Did I need to downgrade my kernel version frist???
I suggest you don't root your phone otherwise it will be too troublesome for you, i.e. do a lot of reading, keep up with development (which also need a lot of reading), fine tuning your custom ROM (which also need a lot of reading), the list will never ends (which unfortunately needs much reading as well!).

Hey danwteik,
Indeed you need to do some further researching before proceed for rooting as I believe you don't want to screw your phone up.
But as long as you're prepared, you're OK. Am too a newbie to Android and after lots of research, I've successfully root & flash my phone to custom rom as well.
Just follow this guide from Ashwin, great step by step guide and you won't need to worry much as you can proceed as per the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJjh6gi0Spw
Just like the firmware from the video, go download it from Dr Ketan's thread:

questions regarding root
hi all xda guys,
I am new to droid and love it thus far...
after having my galaxy note for a few weeks and doing some reading, ive decided i want to root my phone to have the best working phone possible HOWEVER im completely clueless when it comes to being this technologically adept. so i hae a few questions as follow:
1. ive read the root thread and see that there are a few different options for rooting, in everyones opinion which is the best / easiest to perform the most basic root to unlock my phone, root it and be able to install custom items.
2. CWM i assume means clock work mod...what is this mod exactly? and why is it important to install along with the root?
3. my phone settings read that my kernel version is 2.6.35.11..one rooting option i believe requires you finding out which kernel your running and they list kernels as kk## etc. how do i figure out exacty which kernel I am if it only reads the previously listed kernel version?
4. what exactly does it mean when someone told me theyre going to instal custom kernels? ( i have a friend who just bought and rooted a new Samsung GS2 and im curious as to what this means)
5. i've read the rooting directions and watched videos posted and googled my brains out...does anyone know where i can go to find the most basic and simplest explanation and directions for rooting my GN? (if youre reading and got this far and saying the explaination in the root thread IS THE EASIEST it can be....i need something dumbed down to the level a 2 year old can understand....this stuff is mind-boggling confusing for me for some reason i cant wrap my head around the process or the concept)
6. i basically want to root my phone for these reasons
- to figure out and manage to make my phone use less running ram to run faster
- to be able to install or customize the phone to make my battery last longer
- to be able to do whatever it takes to tether my phone without having to pay for it in my data plan
-to be able to install or whatever it is that allows me to customize my phone (themes, fonts, icons, etc)
- to use my phone worldwide on different carriers without having to pay for unlocking, buying other sim cards etc.
- to install or whatever to have my phone do amazingly cool stuff. (this isnt as important as 1-5 but hey who doesnt want a phone that can do everything and then some?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! i've googled it and asked friends and even have contacted someone on craigslist who offers a service for a nominal fee. but im smart and smart enough technologically speaking that i can figure it out.
i just need someone to sit down with me and explain everything step by step and answer my questions. PLEASE i'm willing to do anything and everything possible to learn and re-pay someone for their awesome-ness and sharing their intelligence.
someone something, please help a fellow user out.
*i'd even go so far as to pay-pal someone a few bucks or bake you a cake and ship it to you. im that serious.
please guys,

Hello Friends.
I am very keen on getting started with the Rooting process for my Galaxy Note. I have been reading and trying to comprehend the various methods of achieving root but it seems overwhelming and daunting.
I reiterate what I have stated in another thread, I am an infant in this domain. I feel much too confused presently and thus I humbly request you to please guide me one step at a time.
At the very beginning, I aspire to achieve two motives. They are -
1] Root my device
2] Back up the stock ROM
My device details are :
Model number
GT-N7000
Android version
2.3.6
Baseband version
N7000XXKK5
Kernel version

[email protected] #2
Build number

I thank you in advance for continuing to have patience with me.
