google voice??? just sms app? - G Tablet Themes and Apps

I am either blind, an idiot, or both. I want to use my g tablet with Google voice to look @ my SMS inbox and send SMS while on wifi. It would be nice to almost, if possible, send messages n a queue of sorts then once wifi is available have them sent. Bugatti this point it would just be nice to be able to use Google voice for SMS on this.

I already use GV for SMS on mine. Are you having trouble installing, or are your messages just not getting sent?

I am not having any issues with this running Vegan 5.1.
Would using the web version of google voice solve the issue for ya?

I already have google voice installed but it hangs up during the skip setting up voicemail part.. i choose i do not want to use google voice for making calls etc, and also tried all the other options as well so in case there was something weird about it not liking me choose do not use google voice for calls or what not.
do eother oneof you have a link to the GV app you installed where I could try that instead? I also am having a hard time finding in the market other apps as well. nother topic for another day.

I ran into the same thing when I was trying out Vegan. I never solved it myself since I decided to stick with Calkulin's ROM, but they seem to have figured it out in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959310

Check this thread. I used the second DL from the guy's Dropbox/

[Q] VoiceMail notification W/O sprint_core.apk also GoogleVoice QUESTIONS

Is there any way to be notified of voicemails WITHOUT having sprint_core.apk, the visual voicemail app, installed? also, is there any way to retrieve google voice voicemails from my handset without using the google voice app?

For GV, you can go to google.com/voice in your browser, it works the same way
Not sure about the other question
If you have your phone configured to forward to google voice, then its impossible for you to get actual phone voicemails so I dont see your use case. I really wouldn't mess with that voicemail apk either. If anything you can freeze it in Titanium backup if you dont like the fact that it runs in the background, but it will probably break other parts of the system.
ive ran without the vm apk before, it works fine. the only thing that doesnt, is notifications. when im left a vm without the app installed- i am not notified.
if im setup to forward unanswered calls to google voicemail, is there any way to retreive the voice messages on google voice with my handset, without the google voice app?

while i appreciate your efforts, as far as im concerned you keep posting lateral solutions. the google voice site on the browser kinda sucks. im given an option to download the file to the sd card...
ultimately the goal is to remove sprintcore while still being notified of the voicemail that is left. i wouldnt want to remove something just to have to add something to do the job.
thank you thank you
You can always use google voice to send you an email/text when you have a message, and check it the old fashioned way (by dialing in).

forward text to gtab

Would it be possible to forward text messages to the gtab from my phone. Also would like to respond with my grab. Not sure how this would be done but it would be cool. Could be done through Bluetooth or just a good internet connection.

You load the Google voice app from the market. You need to setup a Google voice account also. You enter the phone numbers you want to associate with it. It will also give you a Google phone number. Then you setup Google voice on your device and when it asks for the phone number use one that is associated with your google voice account. People use the google voice phone number to send you texts. And when you send them they show on peoples devices as coming from your Google number. I just had my daughters add my Google number to my contact info in there phones. The last part in the setup about voicemail you can just skip. Only going to send texts from your tablet..
It appears as a big inbox. You get notifications in the top bar when someone sends you something. You can also reply from Gmail. I have an SMS folder I setup in Gmail that I can reply from also.
Sorry to revive an old thread but is there any way to forward incoming sms messages from your cell number (not GV number) to your GV account so you can read them on the Gtab? I don't want all my contacts to have to change the number they send texts to for me. I tried to set it up but none of the sms messages were forwarded to my GV account. I think they are probably in an infinite loop in cyberspace!

I saw that last week but also saw my carrier will charge an ETF if I port my number over to GV. I'm not going to pay $200 just to read my text messages on my Gtab. It was just more of a convenience question as the screen is larger.
What I did and it worked for a couple of hours was create another GMail Account and downloaded an app from the market that forwarded my SMS messages to the Gmail account. It worked until Android killed it. I restarted the app and then I didn't receive any more text messages on my phone or in the Gmail account. I uninstalled the app, restarted the phone, and about 30 SMS messages all came through at once.
In theory this works if you can find a decent SMS forwarding app that can run in the background without being zapped and doesn't screw up your messaging app. I only tried one but may try others tomorrow.
may want to look for "sms forwarder" in the android market. not sure if that does what you want but it sounds like it does.

Yeah, that's the exact one I used and it was hit or miss. I haven't tried any of the paid apps to see if I get better results.

SMS Client

Has anybody tried getting SMS on your nook? I tried getting Google Voice to work but can't remember specifically but I ran into some roadblocks getting it to work. It was looking for local phone services or something. Has anybody got at SMS to work on the nook. I think it would be nice to send and receive text messages.
this would be awesome
I got Google voice am to work but I'm not sure how.
Magically transmitted across the interwebs by my kickass NookColor!
Google voice works great on NC for SMS
Thanks, I have to retry this. It was late when I was installing, could have missed something.
Make sure you have a Google voice number not just the account. I had to pick a gv number in order for texts to work.
Works great here too.

Google voice working here. Yes, make sure you have chosen to get a gv. Number and not just using your cell phone number with gv
Google voice downloaded from the market works on my daughter's nook. She can send and receive texts. Is there a way to get the contacts to show up? When she tries to compose, it seems the only option is to manually type in the number. I can't find a way to access an address book from within google voice. Am I missing something?
Thanks!
How do you get a number for. The nook.
I have gv on my phone already but how do I assign a number to my nook.

Just use the same credentials. You should receive messages on both devices. I have my iPhone 4 and nook set up for that. Unless you want to deal with another number there is no reason to create a new one.

Has anyone tried getting WhatsApp to work? It needs to send a confirmation sms to your specified number, I'm trying to find a way to bypass that portion. Google Voice works great in the mean time, but Whatsapp is great for sending multimedia.
I am sensing a little confusion here...
Remember folks, true SMS messaging requires cellular service, as it uses the cellular radio to send packets of information to the cell towers and through the service providers.
The only way to go about text messaging without a cellular radio on a device is to use a VOIP service (Voice Over IP) that also allows text-messaging. I'm actually not familiar with Skype at all, so I'm not sure if they also use phone-numbers, but with Google Voice, you have to have a phone number, which is one that is provided to you (you get to choice of available numbers).
The only other option for messaging over text, other than using a VOIP service that offers a texting feature, is to use an instant-messaging service (i.e. AIM).
Agreed. I completely understand the sms bit, which is why google voice works. But Whatsapp is also data based, which is why its so great. However it still requires an activation step but sending an sms to your number which obviously cant be done. However I'm curious of anyone knows of a way to bypass the activation portion altogether?

cant you tell it to send a sms to your google voice number?
I can't seem to get this to work. I DLed the google voice app from the market, it walks me through set up, I log in with the same gmail account that my gvoice # is assigned to, but then it only shows my mobile number, not my gvoice #. I select add a # and then the screen just stays put....nothing happens. I have to press n to go back to my home launcher.
Any hints?
Has anyone got a contract list to work with google voice?

what do you guys mean by this? I can't get mine to work. Like the other guy said, i downloaded from market, selected my mobile phone number (when I try to add a phone number it doesn't work). I can send text messages that send from my GV number but I can't receive any messages. I can't receive any messages on my mobile phone either, for that matter.
Any ideas?
I don't have Google Voice installed on my mobile phone, but that shouldn't matter, right?
Thanks!
GTalkSMS / TalkMyPhone
I've been using a neat app called 'GTalkSMS' (available on Market) that allows me to use Google Talk to send and receive SMS from my phone number. GTalkSMS works great when I'm at desktop and is also quite serviceable from the Nook.
You may have to first set up a separate Jabber chat account for the phone (if you're using Google Talk as the chat program). After that step, I've used it for:
- sending & receiving SMSes (after forgetting my phone at home/other side of the house (lol));
- looking up contact info on the phone (includes email & physical addresses as well as phone numbers);
- locating my phone with GPS coordinates and by setting it to ring;
- writing on my phone/sending links or clipboard content...etc.
I don't have Google Voice locally, so I'm not sure how it compares -- let me know!
TextPlus seems to work. (;

I've used GTalkSMS and Google Voice, and I prefer Google Voice, only because I don't have to set up a Jabber chat account to make it work, and it allows me to use the same number for SMS on all my devices. But if you don't have a Google Voice number, GTalkSMS is the way to go!

Google Voice

I'm using google voice for voicemail, but noticed that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting. He's running stock 2.1, and I'm running di11i's v5.6 Stripped (an i9000 ROM). Where his has a compose button to text with, mine has a refresh. Any ideas why? Yes, I'm in the United States and have full Google Voice access.
Have you tried updating it in the market? I'm running a jpy rom and my compose button is to the left of the refresh.
Just uninstalled and reinstalled to make sure, I'm at the newest.

you might have selected your messaging app as your default after installing voice. Normally after you've installed google voice, your first txt message you try to send out via your contacts list. A pop up will appear asking you to choose an app to complete the action. it asks you to choose google voice or messaging, and an option to set whatever app is going to be the default. To get back that option you need to reset the defaults in your messaging app and not the google voice app.
The settings can be found under.
Settings -> applications -> manage applications -> messaging
pick clear defaults then try to send a txt message from your contacts list and you should see the pop up asking which app you want to use to send your txt.
using gv for texting works great, just make sure whoever you are texting has your gv number attatched to your contact because it sends the text from your gv number.
When I started using gv I sent all my most frequent texters my gv number and told them to use that number for me.
This allowed me to drop my text from unlimited to the 200 pack and saved me 10$ a month.

i hope you realize the difference between:
Google voice (for converting messages) and Voice Search by Google (for searching and inputting text into messages by voice like your buddy)
2 different things. and also not to be confused with android voice dialer. which works better as a dialer than google voice search (Which it is supposed to do also but doesnt work properly)
heres the offical youtube vid for what you want.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about Google Voice, the American app & service that us Canadian's don't get to use.
Trusselo, it let's you forward your phone to your GV account and use the Google Vmail service. It opens up a world of options compared to a carrier's vmail services. I have a GV account from when I was working down south this past summer, but you can't add a Canadian number to your account. So, until Google opens up that restriction I can't use my GV account anymore.
GV also let's you, if you choose, have 1 number which rings at any destination(s) you choose. Such as cell, house, work etc and then end up back in your GV vmail. I wish Google would open up the service to Canadians, especially since it was started by Canadians at Grand Central (Calgary company), then bought out by Google and shut down.

I read it as he wants to TEXT from his GOOGLE VOICE account, with the GV app. "that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting". This is a feature of the GV app, if you select it in your GV account.
Ok that is quite possible then, either way, i dont have google voice.
I text by talking.
I use Voice Search by google to do what he wants and cant find.
many people have confused them before.

Text Messaging?

Has there been any way of sending and receiving texts with the TouchPad through bluetooth? I know webOS can do it with the Pre 3 and the Veer but not with any other phone. How about Android? Any apps or anything?

There is also TextPlus. Basically this app uses a fake phone number out in the world. People can text to that number and you will get it in your TP. You can also send texts out using it and take care of attachments.
There are lots of apps that imitate it, but nothing (other than GVoice that I've seen) that can allow you to use your own phone number to do it. Unless your carrier allows a web-access type thing, like Rogers did with their OneNumber that they just started. But again, that's web, not an actual app.
I reco GV, but then again, I'm Canadian, and I like being able to text anywhere from it.
I went ahead and downloaded the app DeskSMS on my phone. I linked it to my google account and text messages are forwarded to google talk on CM9 and the default Messaging app in webOS. I can reply straight from my tablet. On top of that, google chrome has an extension on the desktop version that allows you to do the same thing and send/receive texts from the browser. Its pretty cool. The best part is is that it acts like a normal text message so it doesnt show the people I'm texting a different number or require them to be logged into google talk or anything.
